2014 Kia Sorento Review: One Of The Worst Midsize SUVs of 2014 With Blown Engines

Alex Showalter
Sep 24, 2022

The 2014 Kia Sorento only lasts around 120,000 miles with serious engine failures and electrical issues. At $14,116 to $15,541, it’s cheaper than average, yet not worth it when there could be engine failures that cost thousands.

VehicleHistory Image
likeFilled The Good
Technology is good for its age, the available V6 engine is strong and the 10 year, 100,000 mile warranty is longer than most other SUVs.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Base 4-cylinder engine is weak, third row is cramped and there are expensive mechanical problems.

Is the 2014 Kia Sorento a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 5/10 – 2014 is a bad year for the Kia Sorento with widespread engine failures making it deserve a low overall rating, even with some nice features. Owner reviews complain about oil consumption, electrical issues, and broken parts.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 7/10 – Interior materials are nicer than other SUVs in the same price range, seats are comfortable, and cargo space is great for a midsize SUV.
  • Reliability 5/10 – The 2014 Sorento has a lot of engine problems. We recommend buyers avoid models from 20112016. We recommend models from 20172020, which are all more reliable.
  • Performance 6/10 – The standard 4-cylinder engine is weaker than other midsize SUVs, while the optional V6 is quicker than average.
  • Safety 8/10 – The Sorento is very safe, earning a perfect 5-star rating in all government crash tests. Standard safety technology includes a rearview camera as well as parking sensors. There’s an optional blind spot monitoring system.
  • Gas Mileage 7/10 – Fuel economy is average at up to 22 MPG giving 382 miles of range out of the 17.4 gallon tank. Gas costs are $16 lower than average, at $220 per month.
  • Value 6/10 – The Sorento is less expensive than other midsize SUVs, although widespread engine problems wind up costing a lot as it ages.

Kia Sorento love it so much. A few setbacks but amazing all around.
I really enjoy my car. I have been using it since my sophomore year of high school and love it. The air conditioner just went out though but I think with a few tweaks I should be able to fix it fairly easily. The lights have gotten more and more foggy throughout the years but still work alright. The brights are more dull too.

It handles well in the pouring rain and allows space if you don't have a third row
I love my truck but dislike the fact that there is barely any trunk space when the third row is up. It handles well in inclement weather and is comfortable!

Kia Sorento is a great vehicle.
Very reliable car. Easy to drive. Nice to ride in. Looks good. Has not needed a lot of car repairs. I have always felt very safe in this vehicle. I feel like we got this car at a fair price. Insurance if fairly priced. It is a good family vehicle. The salesman @ the dealership was knowledgeable.

All of the features you need for less!
I have owned several luxury SUVs over the years and my Kia Sorento is my favorite by far! Not only is it economically priced but it is very reliable, rides comfortably and has all of the features I need including a backup camera, leather seats, and many other extras. I will never own anything but a Kia in the future!

Kia Sorento 4 cylinder is a good vehicle but a little slower that 6 cylinder.
The Kia Sorento is a very good vehicle. It gets good gas mileage and really has never had any issues in terms of mechanical problems. I am still getting used to the 4 cylinder engine. My last Kia Sorento had a 6 cylinder engine. It does get better gas mileage but sacrifice a little in power. Once you reach top speed it performs well. Interstate driving it is fairly equal to the 6 cylinder. It is in the in town traffic where you notice a difference in acceleration.

Kia Sorento; great car for single moms.
I love my Kia Sorento. As a single mother of two children this car is a great size and is good on gas as well. It is pretty low maintenance as well and parts do not cost so much. This car has three rows and the back is easy to fold down for great truck or storage space. Great, safe, efficient car.

It's great, it runs well and it's very comfortable. No problems at all. Up to date service and mostly highway miles

I can fit 7 people if needed in this car.
I just got this car in July, it rides smooth it is very good on gas. I drove up to Philadelphia with a full tank and back to jersey and barely hit the half full mark. It has Bluetooth and I can connect my phone to the radio with a USB cord. I have the drive and passenger seats up front a three setter and a pull up two seats in the back if needed. The associates that work at matt black Kia are very helpful in picking a car for you, they are so friendly.

The first thing you should check is the Safety of a vehicle.
I dislike that there were so many recalls on my vehicle.
accountCircle Monet W
Do not buy a Kia you will live to regret it.
I would never suggest this car for anyone to drive. I have had so many issues with this car and I will never buy another Kia. From engine issues to abs issues to heating and cooling issues. It always has the check engine light on even after replacing the engine and the brake system to head gaskets needing replaced. It is issues after issue.

This vehicle has a high oil consumption every 1,000 miles a 1/4 of oil and it is not good.

We have had to replace motor at 68000 miles due to metal shaving in the oil, and there are a lot of mechanical issues.

Overall on having a Kia Sorento.
It has a lot of recalls and needs constant repair I have had to send it do to recalls and wiring several times. The car itself is spacious and very roomy but the build of it needs work. But it is a great family car and very large trunk space which is useful.
accountCircle Staci J
The only thing I like about my car is the heated seats.
I had a recall that failed. That recall caused my entire engine to fail. It was in the shop for 3 months. On top of that all of the electronics on my steering wheel are not working, including my cruise control. My back hitch is not working so it will not even hold up. And my backup camera does not work.
accountCircle Carol H
So far Kia has stood behind it.
It is an all wheel drive vehicle and has already had to have the axle repaired and is now doing the same thing it did before the repair. They will have to replace it again but I am worried about what will happen when the warranty runs out and it goes out again.
accountCircle Kelly B
It was the only vehicle she could get at the time.
It goes way to slow..It feels like other cars are faster than mine. I don't want no more speeding tickets. It's for a old person who don't like speed. I wish I could get a different vehicle. The color is ugly. It took almost two years to pay off. I wish my mom would have gotten a v-6 or something faster so it don't seem like I am slow.

What Do Critics Say About the Kia Sorento?

  • Consumer Reports says the Sorento handles well in city traffic, but has low owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Sorento 4.1/5 praising the quiet cabin, but doesn’t like the weak 4-cylinder engine.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Sorento a 4.2/5 enjoying the available technology, but owners don’t like the cramped third row.

What Common Problems Does the 2014 Kia Sorento Have?

Common problems found on the 2014 Kia Sorento include engine failures, peeling paint, and broken door locks. Overall, these problems are more severe than other used SUVs from 2014, and repair costs are higher than average as well.

Engine failures are an extremely widespread problem reported by Sorento owners at around 70,000 miles. There are known engine problems which cause them to fail as they age. Changing out the engine costs around $7,000 if it fails. There is a recall for an engine bearing, so if your engine fails because of that bearing the replacement may be free.

Peeling paint is another issue mentioned by owners in the first 75,000 miles. Paint, particularly on the roof and hood, starts to peel as the Sorento gets older. Repainting the affected areas fixes the problem, but costs around $1,200 per panel.

Broken door lock systems also show up on a lot of Sorento models at around 50,000 miles. The door lock controller and actuators both fail over time. Replacing the door lock controller costs around $1,200, while each actuator is around $120.

There are 5 recalls which are more severe than other SUVs from 2014. The most serious recall covers the engine bearings which can cause the motor to fail. Kia will replace engines on affected models for free. Other serious recalls include the right axle failing, and a fuel line which can leak, causing a fire.

How Long Will the 2014 Kia Sorento Last?

A well-maintained 2014 Kia Sorento will last around 120,000 miles, which is nearly 200,000 miles less than the top-rated Toyota Highlander. Regular annual maintenance costs are more expensive than average, according to data from Repair Pal, at $521 per year.

Since nearly all used 2014 Sorento models will have around 100,000 miles buyers should be prepared to replace the oil pump for $1,700, the radiator costing $1,100, and the power steering pump, which costs $560.

Yes it is reliable. It is the only car my family has and it is been very dependable. We use it to drive to work, pick up the kids and for all our errands.

accountCircle Jenna M

The only problem it had it that it is a little shaken when driven past 60 miles and hour. I often feel the shaking daily.

accountCircle lakaii s

No problems this far. It's very reliable. A great car to drive I love it so much. It's awesome and have been since I purchased it.

accountCircle Lisa J

Steering wheel electronic controls recently stopped working. Other than that it has been a really reliable and fun vehicle to drive.

accountCircle Casey J

I am the 2nd owner of this vehicle as it came off a 2 year lease. In the 3 years that I have owned it I have had to replace the battery. The original battery lasted 4 years. I have had batteries in other cars last longer than that. It now has 33000 miles on it and it needs front brakes. I will be having that done soon. I think brakes should last longer than this. It has had 2 mfg. recalls and Kia has serviced my vehicle each time for free and without any hassle and corrected the minor issues involved.

accountCircle Kat W

Fairly reliable. It does tend to need repairs more often than a Toyota or Nissan. Things break on it a lot more often.

accountCircle Colleen H

It has been a reliable vehicle. So far we have not had any issues with the vehicle. It has gotten us back and forth to Ohio which is an 9 hour drive for us.

accountCircle Lisa G

In terms of safety, yes, the 2014 Kia Sorento is reliable. It handles nicely in snow, and is a vehicle I would be ok with my son driving when he learns how to drive. The vehicle I bought may have had an undocumented accident. The driver side back door sticks and one of the light bulbs inside the headlight fell out shortly after purchasing. So far issues I've encountered include: the steering wheel buttons do not work properly anymore(the volume up and down send/hang up phone calls and the send and end call buttons do not work), the backup camera no longer works, the headlight and brake lights need changes frequently (about every 6 months), and the starter recently needed repaired.

How Is the Technology?

The entertainment technology is good in the 2014 Sorento with a new, larger touchscreen stereo system available, along with standard Bluetooth connectivity. Safety technology is also good with a standard rearview camera on the EX and SX models. Blind spot monitoring is also standard on the SX.

Is the 2014 Kia Sorento a Good Value?

No, the 2014 Kia Sorento is not a good value since so many repairs are expensive. Blue book prices range from $14,116 to $15,541, making it cheaper than a Honda Pilot or Jeep Grand Cherokee. When new, the price range was $24,100 to $40,100. Depreciation is worse than average, losing about 15% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Kia Sorento?

There are four models of the Kia Sorento offered for 2014 from the base LX all the way up to the well-appointed SX Limited.

LX is the entry-level model with:

  • 17-Inch Alloy Wheels
  • Cloth Seating
  • Power Windows & Locks
  • Split Folding Rear Seats
  • Bluetooth
  • 6-Speaker AM/FM/CD Stereo With 3.5mm & USB

EX is a step up, adding:

  • 18-Inch Alloy Wheels
  • Rear Spoiler
  • Keyless Entry
  • Parking Sensors & Rearview Camera
  • Leather Seating
  • Heated Front Seats

SX is next in the lineup, which adds:

  • 19-Inch Alloy Wheels
  • Power Liftgate
  • Panoramic Sunroof
  • 8-Inch Touchscreen Display
  • 10-Speaker Stereo System

SX Limited is the luxury version which has:

  • Premium Leather
  • Chrome Wheels
  • Xenon Headlights
  • Heated Wood Steering Wheel

What Engines Come In the Kia Sorento?

  • The base engine is an underpowered 2.4L 4-cylinder which makes 191 horsepower while getting up to 22 MPG.
  • A step up is the stronger 3.3L V6 which generates 290 horsepower and gets up to 21 MPG. Performance is better than average, taking 7.4 seconds to go from 0-60 MPH.

What Colors Does the Kia Sorento Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Kia Sorento?

The 2014 Kia Sorento is a comfortable SUV with seating for up to 7 passengers. The seats are supportive and interior materials are more luxurious than a lot of other midsize SUVs available in the same price range.

Passenger space is good in the first two rows, but the third row has limited legroom which is better suited to younger children.

How Much Storage Space Does the Kia Sorento Have?

Cargo space is better than average for a midsize SUV. There’s enough space for 6-7 suitcases behind the second row, and over 12 suitcases fit with the seats folded flat.

VehicleHistory Image

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The second generation of the Kia Sorento was introduced in 2011, and replaced by the third generation in 2016.

2011: Fully redesigned second generation with new engines, styling, and features.

2012: New optional 4-cylinder engine, ventilated drivers seat, and Uvo voice-activated control.

2013: Leather is standard on EX model, power driver’s seat on LX model.

2014: Minor styling updates, more powerful V6 engine, better steering, new touchscreen.

2015: No major changes.

2016: Completely redesigned third generation launched with new engines and technology.

How Does the Kia Sorento Compare to the Competition?

The Kia Sorento is worse than other midsize SUVs since there are so many widespread mechanical problems, buyers looking for a Sorento should consider a 20172020 which are more reliable.

The Hyundai Santa Fe is another midsize SUV available in the same price range. Both the Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento are built on the same platform, but the Hyundai Santa Fe offers a more upscale interior. We recommend avoiding both the Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento for 2014 since they suffer from the same engine failures.

The Toyota Highlander is another midsize SUV which costs about $7,000 more. Reliability ratings and passenger space are both better in the Toyota Highlander, but the Kia Sorento has nicer leather options available. We recommend the Toyota Highlander since it will last much longer.

Yes, we have had minimal issues and the car has almost 200,000 miles. As long as you keep up with the maintenance it will run well.

Things tend to break on it easily, but it’s an okay vehicle. I prefer Toyota or Nissan. Kia’s feel cheaply made and tend to need more repairs than I was used to when I drove a Toyota.

Good CUV for the money. Expect to maintain it or repair costs will catch up.
My 2014 Sorento LX AWD has been a dependable family vehicle. I purchased it as a 2nd owner with 40,000. It was previously an enterprise rental car. No major issues with the car for the first 80,000 miles. Just oil changes, tires, and servicing the transfer case and rear diff. At about 120,000 miles it developed a couple minor electrical gremlins. One of the LED daytime running lights quit and the drivers side heated seat stopped. I purchased full leather interior from an SX and fixed my seat heater. The first major mechanical issue happened at about 180,000 miles. Spun a rod bearing. Replaced the crank, rod and main bearings, timing chain(s), tensioners, water pump, thermostat, and did a deep cleaning of the valves due to GDI buildup (some preventative maintenance). The only additional expense has been new catalytic converters at about 190,000 miles. I've now got 195,000 miles and its running strong. I expect to get another 100,000 before have to tear into the motor again. All engines eventually fail, but if you learn to repair them yourself you can avoid much of the expense.

I bought it mid January. It shut off on me randomly 5x over the first 2 weeks. I purchased a 1 year warranty on it and will be choosing another vehicle next year when it expires. My previous SUV was on it's last legs. I found a good price for low mileage 7 seater so I got it. I wish I could return it already

The Kia Sorento is a great value for a midsize SUV. It has not given me any problems mechanically, at all. It has an eco drive function which saves money on gas. And it is a four-wheel drive so we do not have to put snow tires on in the winter when we go to Tahoe. It has air conditioner and heater vents in the back so that my children will not get too hot or too cold. It also has three rows of fold down seats that sit up to seven adults. I really like how much I can carry in this vehicle. I have trouble laying the seats down myself but other than that it is great. There is a lot of room for groceries and for several people to ride along with me. It is a great size for our large dogs too!

2014 Kia Sorento. Nice SUV to drive.
This is a very comfortable SUV to drive. Great visibility all the way around. Gas mileage is ok. Had one recall on the engine, but my SUV passed and did not have the problem being checked on. Besides regular maintenance, the only thing I didn't like was that the battery had to be replaced after only 3 years. I have had batteries last up to 8 years.

Why you should or should not consider the Kia Sorento.
I have had my car for about nine months and it's been a battle. It broke down two times within the first month of getting it. My ac went out the day after getting it out of the shop the second time but it was only a hose leaking. Other than that I like to car itself and the features but now the electrical wiring in the steering wheel that connects to the stereo ( volume and changing the station) is messing up.

Check out reviews on the long term reliability of the brand before buying.
I like the size and comfort and f the vehicle. It also has easy access usb ports. For long trips these features have been great. I?Ve had some mechanical issues with the car and do not trust it is long term reliability though.

Nothing to summarize. I don't like the car.
The stereo stopped working shortly after we got it and the cruise control no longer works or any of the other functions on the radio. I can not use my Bluetooth which I need. I have not liked the car since we got it and feel we got scammed on it from the dealership.

It's ok does not have power and the brake system isn't great. It's a car so I guess u can say it's helpful
We bought this car used at the worst Kia dealership ever. Kia of garden grove we have had 2 recalls the brakes went the first 30 days of having it among lights bad switches always telling us we need to get things fixed but our mechanic says otherwise. We never received our new tags or plates and now they say we have to deal with it.

Comfortable but needs improvements.
It is comfortable however the frame is not as strong as I’d like. I wouldn’t feel safe enough in a serious accident. The electrical needs improvement. Sometimes the headlights and brake lights go out far too often. I had to learn how to change them on my own so I do not have to pay so much every month or so to get them changed.

The moonroof is my favorite it is like you are outside but no hair blowing.
It drives well, is quiet inside, looks nice and maintenance has been minimal. The moonroof is a nice feature and the heated seats are amazing. I wish it had auto start and a heated steering wheel. I also like the auto hatch and you can hook your garage door to be opened from inside the car. Th auto lights are perfect and means you do not have to remember to turn them on.

Great small SUV but tight on space in the rear.
The a/c has a known problem if freezing up if the compressor freezes over. That is a bummer here in Florida.I enjoy the small SUV shape and size. The back seat is roomy for children, but can be tight for large adults to ride comfortably..My favorite feature is the hatchback and folding seats.

Nice for a midsize suv & well equipped
Nice midsize suv. It is stylish and fun to drive. I like the sporty look of it. Nice interior, very classy.

Great ride, sleek look, great on gas mileage but just stay on top of maintenance.
Love the look and how it drives. However when I just hit the warranty mileage my backup camera went and my heated seats. They want over 1,000.00 to fix. This is not worth it to me. I have had no real problems/maintenance other than the normal wear and tear.

Great for long road trip's.
It has a full length sunroof which I love but there are problems with the tracks which are very costly to fix and they keep reoccurring. There are some blind spots especially on the passenger side that you would have to replace the mirror or put a double mirror on it. I love the back up camera it is so easy to backup and alerts you when anything you might not have seen is there. But all and all it has a very smooth ride and is nice for those long road trips.

Reliable family car I love this car and would recommend it.
As long as you keep up on maintenance this is a great car the only downside is that the air went out as well as the power steering I will also say that the cost of the parts to fix can be a bit expensive but once again if you maintain the car then you should be fine the car runs smooth I have had it for four years and only recently have begun to have maintenance issues but I believe that was once again due to the current driver not keeping up on the regular maintenance. Gas is a bit expensive it takes about fifty bucks to fill and does run a bit quicker than I would like.

We love our 2014 Kia Sorento.
Great car. Reliable, comfortable and good price. This is my 2nd Kia and love it. Seats 8 people and good gas mileage. Safety is important to me. Love all the airbags. Had some problems with passenger airbag not working. Currently need to get new tires, ugh.

The performance of a sorrento.
This is second Kia. I love the Kia vehicles they are safe. The performance it has on the road is amazing. The way it picks up on the interstate. It features heated seats and steering wheel so awesome during those winter months. Also the blind side mirrors for when vehicles come near or to close.

Mom car, Kia Sorento. All around the world.
Nothing, I want to upgrade to the 3 rows. The car is great. The gas is good, it is very good on oil. It is a smooth ride all around. I do not know what else to say. I really love the car a lot though, car payment is low. I love the mom car. I like the seat warmers and I need it to have a steering wheel heater too.

4 wheel drive Kia Sorento with heated seat.
I like Kia because they have been good but the engine did blow. Kia replaced it though. I like the way it runs and looks. Only negative is that these cars always have brakes issues and sensor problems. I like the heated seats. Leather is nice but it does tend to keep smells in though.

This vehicle offers in door window covers which is helpful with small children.
My basic model does not have auto seat adjustment buttons, it instead has the manual lever which is frustrating and does not always lock into place properly which causes the seat to move unexpectedly while the car is in motion. The Bluetooth feature has intermittent issues when trying to connect to play music from my iPhone X. I have to reset my radio and restart my phone multiple times to correct the issue.
