2016 Chevrolet Traverse Review: Affordable & Comfortable Large SUV With No Major Problems

Alex Showalter
Nov 1, 2022

The 2016 Chevrolet Traverse lasts around 250,000 miles with only some minor stability control and Bluetooth issues. At $13,900 to $19,925, it’s a good value for a full size SUV built to carry a large family.

likeFilled The Good
There’s plenty of passenger room in the cabin, interior materials are nice and the suspension is smoother than other SUVs.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Rear visibility is poor with the small windows, fuel economy is worse than average and the towing capacity is low for a full size SUV.

Is the 2016 Chevrolet Traverse a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 7/10 – 2016 is a decent year for the Chevy Traverse, although it lacks behind some other large SUVs since there’s no V8 engine, giving it an average overall score. Owner reviews praise the comfortable suspension, smooth engine, as well as the stereo system.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 7/10 – Interior materials are similar to other large SUVs, the seats are comfortable for long trips, cargo space is great for its size as well.
  • Reliability 7/10 – There are no widespread problems reported on the 2016 Traverse. Avoid models from 20092014 which have engine issues. Models from 20152022 are much more reliable.

  • Safety 8/10 – The 2016 Traverse earns a perfect 5-star rating in government crash tests. Standard features include a rearview camera. Parking sensors as well as collision & lane departure warning systems are all optional.
  • Gas Mileage 6/10 – Fuel economy is poor at 18 MPG giving 396 miles of range from the 22 gallon tank. Gas costs are $48 higher than average, at $307 per month.
  • Value 7/10 – The 2016 Traverse is cheaper than other large SUVs, although it loses value quickly too, giving it an average value score.

Black lightning during midnight.
It drives really smooth, the breaks are brand new, and it has Bluetooth. After buying the truck it does not consume a lot of gas fast after driving for a long period of time. As you crank up the car you do not even hear I like the third row seat because when we go on family trips it is enough room for family and the luggage.

We researched the safest option for driving in all seasons that could also accommodate a large family and came up with the Chevy Traverse as the option that has made us very happy.
The traverse is a stable vehicle, almost feeling like you are driving a truck. It holds our family of six comfortably and all our stuff. I love the features like back up camera, awd, and safety warnings. There is honestly nothing I dislike about this vehicle.
accountCircle Charlie S
That its a Chevrolet and that its in a lead of its on.
I like the way it handles the road and the fact it gets good gas mileage. It has lots of room to Carry everything me and my wife need.
accountCircle Kim W
It has a really good safety rating. It fits everyone in very well and is nice and roomy.
I really like the crash safety rating. We were in a car accident that would have been much worse if we had been in another car. I really wish it had better trunk space though because I can not fit my double stroller in the back.
accountCircle Rhonda L
It handles well in all weather (I have the AWD). The safety and security of my family is important and this vehicle provides that.
Heated and cooled seats and steering wheel. Safe to drive. Comfortable and plenty of room.
accountCircle Nikki S
It will comfortably fit 7 adults with good amounts of leg room.
I love how much room it has while also still feeling small on the road. I dislike that it doesn't have a sunroof

Great large family size car!
We had looked for months for a car that was going to be able to hold our large family of 7 comfortably. The Chevy traverse is spacious inside and fits all my family. The inside offers easy access to the third row for my younger kids. The backup monitor is great for parking. The hands free options for phone calls are excellent and easy to set up. The traverse has great gas mileage and displays the remaining mileage on the dash. The only problem that I have had is sometimes the screen will get stuck when I am connecting my iPod and I will have to unplug my iPod and turn off the radio screen to reset it. But that only happens sometimes.
accountCircle Lori H
All the safety in the car, when we are in it I feel safe.
Love the back up camera, blind spot and Lane departure. It works great for a family SUV, especially where we need all wheel drive. The one thing we dislike are the horrible blind spots up front especially on the passenger side.

Negative Owner Reviews

I can barely turn in this vehicle.
The turn radius on it is horrible. Parking is a nightmare. In order to pull into a parking place, I have to always overshoot and then correct. If it is a parking spot with a car on either side, I have to overshoot and almost hit one of the cars and then back up and then go forward. While this is not unique to the traverse, it does happen a lot more frequently than when I drove my old car which was a Chevy trailblazer.

Electrical Problems
I own 2016 Chevrolet Traverse the instrument panel and radio will turn when the vehicle is in motion. The will also turn off on its own. I have taken my vehicle to Chevrolet and they can not determine why this is happening. The tech told us this vehicle is not safe to drive. The dealership where I purchased it from will not buy the vehicle back. It’s happened three times already. The first time, I lost power when the vehicle was in motion. I was able to coast the vehicle off the roadway and wait. An hour passed and I was able to start the vehicle again. I don’t know what to do.
accountCircle Danielle T
I have OnStar if they need it.
I like the newer year model, I like the Wi-Fi hotspot, I like the space in second row. I dislike the 3rd row access slide. It's very difficult to move chair out of the way.
accountCircle Lory N
Not for me, others may enjoy.
I purchased the vehicle used, after several months of use, I realized it is too large for me. I find it difficult to park and for me, the turning radius is too large. Several of the electronics are not working properly, things like the radio will flip stations randomly. The layout of the seats, and the dashboard are very nice.

Go with a different car! Not a family car at all.
Tons of problem for being such a new vehicle. The ac stopped working shortly after warranty. A lot of the wires came messed up on it. Not the best choice if you have more than 2 kids. Spent thousands of dollars fixing all the problems. The vehicle was not worth it. After warranty expired everything started messing up on it.

Terrible
I bought a used 2016 Traverse LT AWD. Love my first Chevy Traverse. I put 82,000 miles on my other Traverse older year . But this will be my last chevy I will every buy. There was a horrible smell when you turned on the AC. Then it blows hot air. So I stop putting my AC so high. The issues with AC got worse put on high it would stall. That was not the other issue with AC it would overheat the SUV. Then when visiting family the belts broke. The starter was replaced twice since I bought. I started to hear a knocking noise. The suv engine oil was burning. I now have to replace the transmission and the engine. The engine block is cracked. I have only had this Traverse less than a year. The check engine light and oil light stay on.

Getting my car fixed
I keep getting a check engine warning when starting cold. I do like my Traverse, but I think GM needs to recognize there is a problem and fix it.

Chevy traverse for aging mother.
The traverse drives well. I do not feel it is built to last long. The outside is easily dented and the driver seat is falling apart. There is not a lot of legroom in 3rd row seating.

What Do Critics Say About the Chevy Traverse?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2016 Traverse is a nice choice for an 8-seater large SUV with average owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds gives the Traverse a 3.6/5, praising the smooth suspension, but doesn’t like the outdated stereo system.
  • Kelley Blue Book users rate the Traverse at 4.2/5, enjoying the all-wheel-drive in the snow, but owners don’t like the low towing capacity.

What Common Problems Does the 2016 Chevrolet Traverse Have?

Common problems found on the 2016 Chevy Traverse include stabilitrak warning lights, Bluetooth connectivity issues, as well as burning oil. Overall, these problems are average compared to other large SUVs with similar repair costs, too.

Stabilitrak warning lights show up on some Traverse models at around 40,000 miles. Usually when the light turns on there’s a problem with the steering angle sensor. Changing out the sensor for a new one fixes the problem and costs around $400, depending on local labor rates.

Bluetooth connectivity issues are also reported by owners in the first 10,000 miles. There is a software update for the stereo system which helps improve the reliability of the Bluetooth connection. Chevy dealerships can install the software, which usually costs under $100.

Burning oil is another problem mentioned by Traverse owners at around 60,000 miles. Most engines wind up burning some oil, however, in some cases the Traverse’s V6 burns more than normal. Replacing seals costs around $1,200, although usually it’s not necessary if you just check the oil regularly.

There are 4 minor recalls on the 2016 Traverse, which is better than other large SUVs. The most serious recall covers the third row seat frame, which may have some weld issues. Chevy will replace the seat frame for free on affected models. Other recalls cover air bags, which are common on all used SUVs.

How Long Will the 2016 Chevrolet Traverse Last?

A well-maintained 2016 Chevy Traverse should last around 250,000 miles, which is around 100,000 miles less than the highly rated Toyota Sequoia. Regular annual maintenance costs are similar to other large SUVs, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $485 per year.

Since many 2016 Traverse models for sale have over 100,000 miles on them, buyers should be prepared to replace the alternator for $700, exhaust manifold gasket costing $225, as well as the wheel hub which costs $350.

accountCircle C. S

Yes it is reliable. So far, we have not encountered any problems, but like I mentioned earlier, we have only had it for one year.

accountCircle Courtney C

No problems at all, very reliable. Gas mileage could be better, but it's not horrible. Average is 20 mpg.

accountCircle Crystal G

The 2016 Chevrolet traverse ls is a very reliable vehicle. Our vehicle has not given our family any problems as we have used it on the road.

accountCircle Bianca H

Yes with good wheels but is has slid a few times on the freeway with rain. I think this car needs specific wheels tied to it.

accountCircle Jheri b

I have absolutely no problems with the traverse besides oil changes and the routine check up issues. I may have a low pressure tire issue but besides that it has been great to my family.

accountCircle Karen R

I have never had any problems with my traverse. I tend to travel often and reliability is what I need.

accountCircle Ashley M

I haven't had any issues with my 2016 Chevrolet Traverse. I've had it for about a year now and it has never given me a problem, even when driving in difficult situations.

accountCircle Caitlin B

I have had zero problems with my Traverse! I trust it fully to carry around my precious cargo! It can also be linked to OnStar which is an extra cushion for reliability!

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is average in the 2016 Traverse with a standard 6.5-inch touchscreen stereo with Bluetooth connectivity. Safety technology is average with a standard rearview camera. Optional safety equipment includes forward collision alert as well as lane departure warning systems.

Is the 2016 Chevrolet Traverse a Good Value?

Yes, the 2016 Chevy Traverse is a decent value since it’s cheaper than other full size SUVs. Blue book prices range from $13,950 to $20,000, making it less than a GMC Yukon or Ford Expedition. When new, the price range was $28,700 to $44,145. Depreciation is worse than average, losing about 12% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Chevy Traverse?

There are three main models of the 2016 Traverse from the base LS all the way up to the more luxurious LTZ.

LS is the entry-level model with:

  • 17-Inch Steel Wheels
  • Cloth Seating
  • Automatic Headlights
  • Cruise Control
  • Bluetooth Connectivity
  • 5-Inch Touchscreen Display
  • 6-Speaker Stereo System

  • Fog Lights
  • Remote start
  • Power Driver’s Seat
  • Tri-Zone Climate Control

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The first generation of the Chevy Traverse was launched in 2009 and replaced with the second generation in 2018.

2014: More USB ports, LTZ model gets forward collision & lane departure warning systems.

2015: Siri Eyes Free voice control system added.

2016: New base LS model added, 4G LTE WiFi available.

2017: LTZ model has its name changed to Premier.

2018: Fully redesigned for the second generation offering new engines, interior features, and exterior styling.

2019: New 8-inch touchscreen added to the model.

2020: Standard V6 engine across all models, updated navigation system.

How Does the Chevy Traverse Compare to the Competition?

The Chevy Traverse ranks lower than other full size SUVs primarily because it doesn’t have the towing or off-road capabilities of the competition. If you’re looking for a minivan replacement, the Traverse is a good choice.

The Chevy Equinox is a smaller SUV offered by Chevrolet, which costs $1,500 less. Performance is better in the Chevy Equinox while the Chevy Traverse has more passenger room. We recommend the Chevy Traverse for most buyers since there are fewer mechanical problems reported.

The Honda Pilot is another competitor which costs around $5,000 more. Standard technology is better in the Honda Pilot, while the Chevy Traverse offers more room for passengers in the third row. We recommend the Chevy Traverse for 2016 since it has fewer problems, although the Pilot wins in other years.

Transmission problems
I loved my 2016 Traverse until I had to replace the transmission at 100,000 miles. I was surprised by that since I've been very meticulous in with maintenance. Other than that, it's a very comfortable car to drive and has plenty of cargo space.

Great features, great vehicle.
The only problem I have had with this vehicle is that it is not obvious what all the buttons do. It is spacious and comfortable. It has decent gas mileage, considering it is an SUV. I really like being able to listen to my Pandora account in the car. It is also great on the snowy roads that my locale experiences regularly.

To be honest, my vehicle has no problems as of now and the comfort and reliability is outstanding. It comes with built in Wi-Fi which is also a plus in book. It also has seat warmers for every seat for personalized comfort for each passenger. In conclusion, I love my 2016 Chevy.

A review of the Chevy traverse.
I love the amount of space the traverse has. The gas mileage is less than ideal, but that is the trade-off for the capacity to move more stuff. I was excited to take a road trip with multiple people comfortably before covid happened. The dash and controls are largely intuitive.
accountCircle Katherine B on June 3, 2021
Traverse not all the bells and whistles work right.
It is a very good vehicle. We got ours used so that is part of the reason I am giving it a low star. It does have problems with the electrical system. The dash light dims anytime. Some of the stuff with the radio doesn't stay on. It's bothersome when you can't read your dash! Things just fall off randomly. Its sturdy but to much plastic. Vents fall off and won't go back in. The seat belt covers come off. The lever for the seat adjustments won't stay on, and you cannot put them back on.

The pros of the Chevy traverse.
The Chevy traverse has been a very reliable car. I love that it has 3rd row seating decent on gas mileage and been mechanically sound. Great family vehicle on a budget.
The cross-over is very spacious for large family and has a big truck space for shopping needs. There is hidden storage for safekeeping. Electric windows with heated seats and light around trim to glow at night on the inside interior. The model was in a great shape with tinted windows for comfort on the eyes.

This is one of the best vehicles I have ever had. Minor problems with this car no issues with the exception of the a/c hoses but that is minor wear and tear with owning a car for this long. Would recommend this car to anyone. Only downfall is I chose the wrong color black because it holds the summer heat would have gotten a different color.

Terrific traverse! Perfect size!
I really like the traverse because it is big enough to fit my entire family if we need to travel together. I have a husband and 4 grown children. It is small enough where I did not feel like I am driving a bus. (I had a Yukon before and it was very big) the only problem I have had so far is that the windows get stuck. I need to replace the switch. It has been reliable and drives great. It is very comfortable and has easy to use features. It has a lot of room in the back for cargo if we travel. Overall a great car!

Outstanding drive with a few cosmetic issues. I would buy it again.
The only issue is part of the lining has come off the back passenger door. I love the car and everything else about it. I think it is super roomy for myself and 2 kids with plenty of room in the back. It is pretty easy to clean as far as kids go. I think it drives well and has many safety features. It does not take off too quickly, I feel like it could do better with a larger engine.

There have been too many issues with this vehicle for my liking. Inside feels cheaply made, things are falling apart! Pieces of the interior broke off! Even the outer dials on the radio are peeling! I really enjoy my traverse. At times, the breaking can seem questionable, but it is probably from where and tear. I really like the stereo controls on the wheel and the heated seats. The only issue is that the trunk space, even when folding down the 3rd row, seems small. I'd like it if the seats folded into the floor instead.

It's' great for taking the kids and their multiple friends on outings as well as carrying them to and from various activities with all their necessary gear!
I love most everything about it. It feels more like driving a car, rather than and SUV. It has 3 rows of seating with a capacity for 8 people. The seat rows are adjustable making it comfortable for those passengers in the back. There are only minor things I miss from my previous vehicle (Trailblazer) like the shelf component in the back to organize items. I also miss the back glass not being separate so that I can open it and grabs stuff quickly rather than open the entire back of the vehicle. I also miss the back side windows that could be opened to vent air in the summer Texas heat! All in all though... I LOVE my Traverse and it has been a wonderful replacement for my beloved Trailblazer!!

Chevy Traverse Accessory Package
My Chevy Traverse has been reliable as a daily driver with many extended trips over 100 miles at a time. However, the car does not get the gas mileage I would expect or feel as the competitors in the SUV market are currently getting. Additionally, the lack of Bluetooth ability in the car for music, where the car can use Bluetooth for phone calls is frustrating. The Chevy provided OnStar is a good feature where the base model can gain GPS assistance, with map display showing the car has the capabilities to be better for the consumer.

Very roomy. Decent guess mileage. Family feel safe.
My wife and I really love our 2016 Chevy traverse. We love the captains chairs because we have two young children and putting the car seats in at those captains chairs is much more convenient for us than have there been a bench seat. The backseat still allows us to travel with other family members yet when we for them down we have room to transport items. My wife has specific things that she looks for in a vehicle and loves the traverse enough where she is stated that she would not hesitate to get another one.

The Traverse rides smooth and is roomy allowing plenty of space on road trips. The trunk space is a little small but the hidden compartment allows for extra storage.

Drives really good in winter and has great quality navigation system
I really like the wifi that's in it don't really like the how the seats are they are very uncomfortable to ride long distance

Space. Drive. Family oriented.
Great vehicle a little too low for adventures but I love my traverse. The transverse is very roomy fits the whole family and then some no elbow bumping here great for trips with family. Smooth ride that is very appealing to the eye sporty and with a lot of space.

That it is a good solid car with room for the family.
I like this car because it is all wheel drive and has lots of room. I also like that it rides nice. I don't like that it uses oil.

Best vehicle I have owned.
I love my Chevrolet traverse. It is really reliable and I haven't had any issues. Only thing that the traverse had needed is standard maintenance and new tires. The only problem that I have with my traverse is that it is a ls. Because of that, the Bluetooth does not play my music, but it does connect for phone calls. It also does not have a power liftgate which would be useful. If those are must have features for you, I suggest moving up on the trim.

Such an amazing family vehicle.
Runs great! I am absolutely in love with the traverse! Amazing family car and plenty of storage and space for my family! It is the best car I have ever owned. I am extremely satisfied with the over outlook on the vehicle. My kids can get in and out so easily without any issues.

Bucket seats is our favorite part in the middle.
I love it. Nice size. We have two kids so nice there are two bucket seats for them vs one long seat. Easy up and down back seats for extra trunk space. We updated from the equinox for the space. Decent gas mileage and rides smooth. We like the heated seats and XM radio.

This vehicle is very spacious and comfortable.
The Chevy Traverse is a perfect vehicle for large families. I have three children and was looking for third row seating that was not a minivan but was still as spacious. This car is very spacious and comfortable.

Chevy Traverse is one of the best cars I've owned
So far had only a few problems with car. One is with the air conditioner where the air stopped working and second problem was the back hatch would not open but was able to get fixed. Overall the car drives nicely and has ample room for a growing family. Inside is very comfortable with a lot of room and comfortable seating for those long car trips. My favorite part is the features that lets me know of cars driving beside me that may be in my blind spots and also the sound that alerts when I go outside the lines of the road. I strongly recommend this vehicle especially to families and would definitely buy another one

Chevrolet traverse benefits and issues.
Very roomy vehicle for a relatively small size SUV. Low maintenance costs. Not the best gas mileage for the vehicle type. Have had problems with oxygen sensors going out. Luckily they were under warranty at the time (2 of them). Check engine light comes on now and again, but goes off after some time (usually within 48 hours).

The car offers lots of features for a reasonable price.
I love all the features the car offers. It is so easy to drive and handle. It is a great car for a large family.

Traverse review: good car some issues!
I really do enjoy my traverse. Though there are some things that I couldn’t like about this car. The first thing is how low the seats are in the car. Although they do have the opportunity to be raised I feel as though it should be higher. Keep in mind I am 5’4, therefore I think this car is better for taller people. The air conditioning unit always breaks and costs a fortune to replace.

2016 year Chevrolet traverse.
It is a good car. It does its job. It is roomy enough and if I put the seat down the trunk space holds all of my kids sports gear. The pickup is not amazing but it works well. It is large enough without being a huge car that takes up all the space wherever I go.

Spacious and roomy and comfortable.
I love my traverse. My favorite feature is the heated seats. It is very spacious and comfortable for long trips. We use it often for camping trips and it fits a lot of stuff. We also have a hitch that allows us to transport bigger items when needed.
