To attach jumper cables to a Ford Escape, the first thing You want to do is locate the hood release lever on the left side of the cabin below the steering wheel. Then slide the yellow hood release latch under the left side of the hood to the right, use the prop rod too hold the hood up. Remove the battery cover, it's up against the firewall almost under the window. Connect the red lead of a jumper cable to the positive battery terminal, and then connect the black lead to the nut on the end of the black cable to the right of the battery. Make sure the cables are secure and are making good contact.

To jump start a ford escape connect the positive and negative red and black cables to the positive and negative red and black terminals on the vehicle that is going to jump you while running. Then connect the red cable to the red terminal on the stalled vehicle battery and the black cable to an unpainted surface not the black terminal on the battery then start the car that is stalled.

As with all vehicles on the vehicle being jumped the cables go directly onto the battery posts and on the vehicle being used to jump place the red clamp on the battery positive post and the black clamp on the frame or other grounded metal surface. When the vehicle being jumped starts it can backfeed a large amount of current to the jumping vehicle and can fry the alternator if the black clamp is connected to the battery post on the jumping vehicle. The vehicle being jumped cannot be harmed either way.

For the 2011 Escape, you need to take the plastic cover off the battery, located under the hood, driver's side. The two terminals are on the battery, attach positive (red) and negative (black). IMPORTANT: Don't mix those up!
