Across the Mk7 model years, the Volkswagen Golf GTI came with a number of different engines in North America. In particular, we'll be looking at the 2017 Golf GTI which came with a 2.0L 4Cylinder turbo engine, the CXCB variant. This requires the use of 6.0 quarts of SAE 5W-30 full synthetic motor oil. In its absence, it's possible to substitute SAE 5W-40, though this is not recommended. The reason You should stay away from SAE 5W-40 is because of its inferior viscosity. Over time, this introduces friction to Your engine, which leads to premature engine wear and tear. This ages Your engine faster, and will eventually cause it to fail at a lower mileage than it otherwise would.

The owners manual literally says 5w40 is one of the two recommended… it’s not going to wreck your engine and might even be better in a warm climate.

The engine oil capacity listed for the Volkswagen Golf GTI mk7 is listed at 5.7 liters.
5.7 litres . In very cold weather I use 100 percent synthetic in 0-20 viscosity.
