The 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 5.7 uses SAE 5W-30 motor oil and requireS7 quarts of it, including the amount leeched by a new oil filter. Dodge recommends going with a synthetic, as that'll perform slightly better with the included additives and allow You to go over twice as long between oil changes; You'll need to take it in at 3k miles with a conventional, but can wait until 7.5k miles with the synthetic, or even push it to around 10k if You're feeling adventurous. You can also go with a different viscosity on this truck; down to a 0W-30, and if You live in a warmer climate, to a 10W-30, without any ill-effect, and potentially an improvement in performance.
