The kind of oil a 2019 Jeep Compass takes is 0w-20. Your oil needs to be changed out someday. Every 5,000 to 10,000 miles or so is a good rule of thumb. If You don't replace it, there will be problems with the engine. Having high quality oil is essential for the engine to run smoothly. You will run into problems with the oil at some point. A common problem is an awful burning odor. This needs to be viewed closely as soon as possible or the car might explode. Old or bad oil can cause the engine to stop working. Knocking noise may arise from the engine. You could experience poor gas mileage.

0w-20 is a thinner oil which is required with OHC engines with a timing chain. A thicker oil will collect on the timing chain and starve the bearings of oil. If your car has a timing belt then you can use a thicker oil like 5w-30. Timing chains tend to have a paddle wheel effect and rob power and take oil away from other critical components in your engine that needs it.

0w20 just means it’s thinner oil 5w20 just means it’s thicker oil which in my opinion a little thicker oil is always better for a car that has over 20k miles.
