The most common VW Golf Mk7 boot lock problems are usually caused by a bad actuator on the lock. A failed or failing trunk lid release actuator is likely to make a grinding noise, open the trunk intermittently or not at all, and require a key to be physically inserted to open the trunk lid. In some instances, the trunk lid may fail to latch as well, but this is not always the case. The trunk lock actuator is the electric motor that can be remotely triggered via the fob device or is activated by pressing a button inside the vehicle. The trunk lock actuator then releases the trunk latch so the trunk can be opened.

Piece of cake to strip & repair, you can get the broken Plastic Gear /Shaft from Ebay for approx £ 8 UK sterling. Once you remove the lock (No need to remove the plastic casing, just pull it to one side of each of the bolts) the lock then comes out easy. Remove the electrical connection with the clip being released (easy), The pull the lock from the plastic covers. Prise open the two large securing clips, then remove the lock assy. Gently prise the electric motor out of its seating, then you can remove & replace the broken gear/shaft assy. Honestly it may sound hard, but if I can do it you can surely do it & save yourself Money. Replace in reverse order. Once you remove & strip the lock it will come easy to you all.
