To open Your bonnet on Your Volvo V40, park the vehicle on a level surface and set the parking brake. Pull the hood release handle under the lower-left corner of the dashboard. The hood will pop up slightly. Push the hood latch lever (located under the front edge of the hood to the center) to the side and raise the hood. Once You have raised the hood slightly, You can release the lever. Remove the support rod from the clamp using the grip. Mount the support rod in the hood. When closing, remove the support rod, and stow it in the clamp, then gently lower the hood. Lower the hood to approximately 12 inches (30 cm) and remove Your hands and let the hood close.

What about the second hook ? The one nearest the windscreen that stops the bonnet opening more than six inches ?

My safety hook prevented to bonnet from being opened. The solution is to use a stick to work a thin rope around the hook, lower the bonnet almost closed and pull both ends of the rope from the drivers side (UK). The feature can then be defeated by bending the fixed bracket, but this is clearly an unsafe fix and it should be taken to a dealer.

The bonnet will be removed when the handle in the passenger compartment has been rotated clockwise and the lock on the radiator grille has been shifted to the left. The hat opening handle is usually on the left foot. Switch the handle from 20-25 degrees clockwise. You're going to know as the catch opens.
