The officially quoted top speed of the 1966 Ford Mustang is around 138 miles per hour; the instrument panel speedometer tops out at 140 mph. Now, that's the official line. Some modded Mustangs have been reported to get over 150 mph, but unless You've made substantial changes to the suspension and have really good brakes, I wouldn't even attempt going this fast in it. Once You've got it over 125 mph, You'll start to lose braking and steering, as the high speeds start to lift up the front end on this vehicle. Now, as far as getting up to speed, You can hit 60 miles per hour from a standing start in as little aS6.6 seconds. Vroom vroom!

Just sold one I’ve had since 1977. Had 3 motors 289 hi po, 351 Windsor & a stock 289. Always limited by rest of drivetrain. Fastest was the 289 hi po, 4 barrel with headers. 118 mph at the end of 2 mile straight in desert.

I owned a 1966 mudtang gt with the 289 v8. I personally pegged the 140 mph speedometer but only once.

120-138mph...I had a I6, its engine blew after holding it at 70-73mph on the interstate. Even after the engine was rebuilt, it felt like it wouldn't pull more than 70's

Not all 1966 Mustang cars were the same, just as all 2020 Mustang cars are not the same. For the model year 1966 there were 3 body configurations and 5 engine choices (not available in all trim levels) ranging from the economy 6 to the Hi-Po V8. The 1966 Ford GT40 and AC Cobra were not Mustang cars nor were those engines available from the factory in the Mustang chassis that year. For the standing quarter mile run, not one, not even the fastest coupe of the factory Mustang cars was capable of 120mph in the quarter mile. When you enable longer distance and downhill factors to top speed, yes maybe the most powerful 1966 Mustang coupe could reach 120mph eventually.
