Ford is recallinG6,146 Escape SUVs from the 2013 model year. The recall applies to models witH1.6-liter four-cylinder engines that could have an engine coolant leak. The National Highway Traffic Safety AdMINIstration says that if the coolant leaks and evaporates on the engine when it is hot, a fire could start. The cylinder head cup plug (freeze plug) may become dislodged, resulting in significant loss of engine coolant. As the leaking engine coolant evaporates on the hot engine, the glycol may ignite, causing an engine compartment fire. An engine overheating condition could also occur. Dealers will seal the existing plug and add a secondary plug cover to correct this concern. The Ford recall number is 12S39.

I experienced this exact problem in 2018, on my 2013 Ford Escape SEL. I had no idea at the time it was a known and existing problem. Luckily I'd purchased an extended warranty, and it was at the Ford dealership for almost 8 weeks while they did repairs. Fast forward to 2021 and the problem started again. The coolant reservoir leaks into the engine compartment somewhere, and while I await hoped for resolution, I'm being very careful to check the coolant once every 14 days. Very frustrating, to say the least.
I've got one of those 2013 Escapes with the coolant leak issue that was repaired under extended warranty in 2018. The leak issue began to occur again about 4 months ago, and I've written to Ford to plead my case. I hope they are willing to help me with this!
