The 1.6L 2011 Kia Soul has a timing chain and the 2.0L 2011 Kia Soul has a timing belt. Both engines are interference.Timing chains are housed within the engine and receive lubrication from engine oil and can last a long time, while timing belts are located outside of the engine and tend to dry out and crack. Normally, timing chains last the lifetime of the car. You should change a timing belt every 60,000 to 100,000 miles. The timing belt is the newer version of the timing chain. Timing belts operate much more quietly than timing chains.
