2020 Toyota Tacoma Review: Very Reliable Small Truck With Low Ownership Costs

Alex Showalter
Mar 24, 2023

The 2020 Toyota Tacoma lasts over 300,000 miles with relatively minor braking and microphone issues reported. At $25,499 to $48,000, it’s expensive, but worth the money for one of the most reliable trucks in the world.

likeFilled The Good
There’s a lot of standard safety technology, it’s excellent off-road and the stereo system offers a lot of features.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The high suspension makes it difficult to climb into, the towing capacity is lower than larger trucks and the rear seats are very cramped.

Is the 2020 Toyota Tacoma a Good Used Truck?

  • Overall Rating 8/10 – 2020 is a great year for the Toyota Tacoma since it’s an extremely reliable truck with great off-road capabilities. Owner reviews praise the towing capacity, smooth suspension, along with the stereo system technology.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 7/10 – Interior materials are more durable than luxurious, the front seats are reasonably comfortable, there are also two bed lengths available.
  • Reliability 10/10 – There are no widespread mechanical problems on the 2020 Tacoma. There were transmission problems on trucks from 20162017, while 20182022 are all extremely reliable choices.
  • Performance 8/10 – The base four-cylinder engine is slow, while the V6 offers good power for a compact truck with a decent towing capacity.
  • Safety 8/10 – The 2020 Tacoma is a safe small truck earning 4 out of 5 stars in government crash tests. Standard features include automatic emergency braking along with a rearview camera. Optional upgrades include blind spot monitoring.
  • Gas Mileage 7/10 – Fuel economy is okay at up to 21 MPG, giving 443 miles of range out of the 21.1 gallon tank. Gas costs are $22 cheaper than average at $224 per month.
  • Value 8/10 – The 2020 Toyota Tacoma is more expensive than other trucks, although slow depreciation paired with low ownership costs gives it a high value score.

Superb deal! The Tacoma is value and comfort all in one.
Drives very smooth, good on gas. All the extras it comes with makes it a superb value. I will only buy Toyota’s they are dependable and last a lifetime! The Tacoma is a nice size truck. It allows it to be used for a work truck and can easily be loaded and unloaded with your equipment.

The rear view camera is so clear. Makes parking so easy.
I have had the car for one month and the only issue I have found is that for the price of the vehicle the back seats are not as roomy as it appears to have, and it also does not have any hookups to charge phones, or any electronic in the back it also does not have vents to control the ac.

2020 Barcelona red 4x4 Toyota Tacoma sr surpassing its expectations!
This is a comfortable, good looking interior/exterior design, 4x4, cruise control with radar (1,2,or 3 car spacing and brakes on its own), touch screen, reliable truck! Parking seems more fun and easier with the back up camera! Sound quality in the truck is 10/10 (jbl), as well as the complimentary outside noise reduction!

The manual 2020 Tacoma is a beast!
I love my 2020 Toyota Tacoma. I bought it because it was a manual transmission and manuals are getting harder and harder to find each year. But the truck is truly flawless! The 4x4 works like a beast, it looks sharp, and it's good on gas mileage what's not to love about it. There is one small problem with the automatic high beams though, mine quit working after the first week of driving the truck home but besides that I haven't had any problems with the truck. Would highly recommend.

My beautiful midnight black 2020 Tacoma.
I love being able to take my Tacoma out to the desert! The interior on my 2020 Tacoma is so beautiful I love it. The outside is a beautiful black midnight color and the features it has on it is just to die for! I test drove it and definitely fell in love instantly! So much room and has parking assist!

My 2020 Tacoma experience.
My Tacoma has never let me down I have taken it everywhere from highways to the trails she’s never let me down. It is a power house that has never got stuck once. I love everything about my truck from the amazing interior that has a great display screen with XM radio, Bluetooth, apple play, and navigation.

This is the third Tacoma that my wife and I have owned.
It is a nice comparison to the trd because it has a decorative rear tailgate rather than the hood scoop that the trd has. It has a nice rear sliding window and the extended bed, which ends up being a breaking point with the standard bed sizes, which can barely fit a normal snowboard much less any lumber or utility use. In short, I feel like the functionality of the Tacoma depends on the bed length on top of a couple of other things. It comes with a very nice factory bedliner which also is hard to use at first because it scratches so easily, but it is a truck bed. Ultimately I do not think that the bilstein shocks are really worth the extra money for the trade.

Avoid this truck!
I don’t understand why Toyota is selling a car that dealerships don’t know how to repair. The Bluetooth mic went out within three days of me purchasing the truck with only 9 miles on it. I took it into the local dealership in Saint Albans, West Virginia and I knew more about the car than they did. I would suggest avoiding purchasing this car until Toyota has trained people to fix it or they do a overhaul of this new computer system. This car is junk looks beautiful but it stalls, it’s sluggish and hard to handle. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time when you are pulling out because you’re going to need it. I don’t know maybe I got a turd but my, 2015 Toyota sienna minivan had a ton more power and the same v6 engine. I think the transmissions in these things are junk. I’ve only had it three weeks and I am contacting a lawyer in 28 minutes just as soon as their office opens.

Stop vibration and squeaks.
My 2020 Tacoma SX vibrates at low speeds. I have had it in twice. It only has 5,400 miles on it. They said the rear axle flange was out of round & had it for 8 days. It still vibrates under 45. It also squeaks. They power washed the springs and said it was from dust them. ?? It started squeaking again shortly after that. I never had these problems with my 2018 or my Ranger I drove for 14 years. I'm tired of wasting my time at the dealership. I think it may be the tires, but they said it's possibly a characteristic of this truck!!

Frame Rust
When will Toyota fix the problem with the frame rust. You have had may class action cases because of it.1995-2017 and I'm sure 2018 and 2019 will be added soon. Why won't you fix this problem with the frame. I know I will not buy another one till you do.

Quality? Reliability? Dealer service?
I have a 2020 OR DCSB with all the bells and whistles. I traded in a 2017 OR DCSB, for the power seat, and the upgraded cruise control. I'm worried my new truck is a lemon. I'm a big old fat guy, with goofy proportions. I have the torso length of a 6' 4" guy, with the upper arm and upper leg length of a 5' 8" guy. So short arms and legs, but tall from my butt to the top of my head. I could never get comfortable in the 2017 truck. I need to be able to angle the seat bottom up in the front so I can move forward enough to reach the wheel and keep my knees off the dash. Then I recline the seatback to keep my head off of the headliner. It works in the 2020. But the seat itself is not holding up to me being in it very well. I only have a little more than 5K miles so far. I have had the truck in to my dealer twice because the seat is noticeably moving under braking or acceleration. Also, the head rest keeps dropping a notch in it's setting randomly. It happens overnight, once or twice a week. I've tried swapping the driver's and passenger's sides with no luck. I think there is a problem with the spring loaded catch. I also have a loud rattle or bang noise, that sounds like the bed is loose, whenever I hit wash board or square edged bumps. The moving seat and loud banging noise happens EVERY SINGLE TIME I drive my truck. My dealer says they can't duplicate any problems. I was given instructions on how to adjust the height of the headrests, shown the seatbelt retaining clips for the rear belts, and told to pull out the draw bar from my hitch. None of those suggestions had any effect on the truck's problems. They now want me to schedule a third visit, to take a manager out for a ride along. So I will need to take more leave from work. They say no managers could go for a ride on a Saturday. Never mind how unadvisable riding around shoulder to shoulder with a stranger who works with the public goes against the current public health guidance. Would love to love my truck, but I just can't since I'm thinking I got one that just wasn't put together like it should have been.

It has awesome style and allows me to use the bed of the truck.
I believe that this car is awesome and it has a cool paint job and I really buy it again because of the fact that it has a good amount of power and it feels like a sturdy vehicle that I would recommend to everybody else that I know and I would buy it again if I had the chance.

What Do Critics Say About the Toyota Tacoma?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2020 Toyota Tacoma is tough as nails with durable materials and high owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Tacoma at 4.3/5, praising the strong V6 engine, but doesn’t like the high entry height.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Tacoma a 4/5, enjoying the excellent off-road capabilities, but owners don’t like the outdated technology.

What Common Problems Does the 2020 Toyota Tacoma Have?

Common problems found on the 2020 Toyota Tacoma include vibrations while braking, the Bluetooth microphone not working, along with a rare fuel pump failure. Overall, these problems are similar to some other trucks on the market, but repair costs are lower due to the affordable parts.

Vibrations while braking are the most widespread complaint from 2020 Tacoma owners at around 18,000 miles. When the brake pads and rotors get worn out, they will vibrate as you slow down. Replacing the brake pads costs around $450, while a new set of rotors is an additional $700.

The Bluetooth microphone not working is another issue reported by some Tacoma owners in the first 10,000 miles. Usually the problem is caused by a damaged connection at the microphone in the upper front console. Repairing the connection costs around $100, depending on local labor rates.

Rare fuel pump failures have also been reported on the 2020 Tacoma. There’s a large recall for a lot of Toyota and Lexus models for the fuel pump which may fail. Toyota will replace the pump in affected models for free.

There’s only one recall on the 2020 Toyota Tacoma, which is better than many other trucks. The recall is for the fuel pump failure that is an issue on most new Toyota vehicles. Toyota is replacing the fuel pump in all models for free since it covers over 1 million cars, trucks, and SUVs.

How Long Will the 2020 Toyota Tacoma Last?

A well-maintained 2020 Toyota Tacoma can last over 300,000 miles, which is over 50,000 miles longer than other small trucks like the Jeep Gladiator. Regular annual maintenance costs are lower than other trucks, according to data provided by Repair Pal at $438 per year.

As a used 2020 Toyota Tacoma reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the serpentine belt for $120, the thermostat costing $355, along with the A/C compressor which costs $700.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is great with a standard 7-inch touchscreen which has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Optional upgrades include a larger 8-inch touchscreen along with a more powerful stereo system.

Standard safety technology is excellent with:

  • Lane departure warning
  • Pedestrian detection
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Forward collision warning
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Rearview camera

Optional driver assistance features include:

  • Rear parking sensors
  • Surround-view parking camera system
  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Rear cross traffic alert

Is the 2020 Toyota Tacoma a Good Value?

Yes, the 2020 Toyota Tacoma is a great value since it’s one of the most reliable vehicles on the road. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $25,499 to $48,000, making it more than a Nissan Frontier or Chevrolet Colorado. When new, the price range was $26,050 to $46,665. Depreciation is better than other trucks, only losing about 2% of its current value per year.

Great Mid-Size Truck
I've had this truck a 1 1/2 years, its awesome. The v6 engine and automatic transmission work extremely well together delivering good fuel economy for a vehicle this size. The 4wd works great on deep snowy, muddy roads with a twist of a knob. Just a fine truck overall.

Overall a good vehicle, though it has some quirks.
Overall the 2020 Tacoma is a decent vehicle. The gas mileage is decent for a truck, and the power is not bad for a v6. The infotainment system works, but can be a bit finicky at times. The automatic transmission is also a bit odd, with shift points seemingly in weird places. This transmission issue is apparently due to the truck's computer 'learning' your driving style over the first few hundred miles and then adapting if driving style changes.

Workhorse with comfort and style.
The Tacoma is a great mid size truck. It has plenty of interior space and the bed is perfect for light duty work. Tacomas have a trim level and options for every budget. The v6 engine has great power and fuel economy. It has 6800 pounds of towing capacity, which is great if you have a camper, or tow light equipment. Bonus is that there are many aftermarket companies to accessorize your truck anyway you want. Tacomas also have a cult following that helps them hold their value.

No problems with the truck. Super comfortable heated leather. Handles great on city and highway roads. Love the comfort and style of where everything is located in the cab. Double cab with lots of room for four people traveling. Tableau cover locks and easy to use.

The low steering wheel of Toyota tacoma’s.
My Tacoma is great. I love almost everything about it. The only thing I am not a big fan of is that the steering wheel is to low, so when getting in the truck your thighs will be hitting the steering wheel and therefore making it difficult to get in. This goes for all tacoma’s.

2020 Toyota Tacoma PRO Crawl control
Bought a new 2020 toyota tacoma TRD PRO one day ago went to try out the crawl control and its not working uphill by it self cant believe it yet the car is at the dealership waiting to see what is the problem with this truck

Highlight of the Toyota Tacoma trd pro would be its stock off road capability.
Great ride quality on and off road. Slightly obsolete infotainment system, makes a ton of beep sounds. Great because one of the most widely catered to trucks for modifications by aftermarket parts companies. It is on the smaller side of pickups, back seats can be cramped for bigger passengers.

Frame Rust
When will Toyota fix the problem with the frame rust. You have had may class action cases because of it.1995-2017 and I'm sure 2018 and 2019 will be added soon. Why won't you fix this problem with the frame. I know I will not buy another one till you do.

Size has pro’s and con’s. Easy for navigating but not great for functionality.
Cab is a little smaller than I’d like. Cup holders are also too small. Gas mileage is not quite as good as expected. Other than that, it is a great truck. Midsize vehicle makes it a lot easier to navigate especially in tighter spaces like garages and parking. A lot of new features are great, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring and lane departure have been very helpful.

Comfort on long trips and over all reliability.
I would definitely recommend this truck. I just bought a 2020 Barcelona red Tacoma and have put 4000 miles on it in 3 weeks. One trip was about 1500 miles. I found it very comfortable to drive, the seats are perfect for me, the lumbar support is very good. It's beautiful and so far I am very happy with it and have confidence that because it is a Toyota it will be good for many miles to come.

Didn't think i'd like the factory tonneau cover, but its become extremely useful on rainy days when needing to carry larger items in the bed.
Can't say enough about my 2020 tacoma sr5 v6 auto access cab.....its been perfect.

Does great offroad, not quite a jeep but does just about everything you need.
Fuel economy is really poor on this vehicle, I average 16-17 city even when keeping the rpm' under 2500. I wish it would do better in city. Highway it does pretty good though. And I do not tow anything. I also do not have a tonneau cover. I run 85 octane in it normally.

Blackout 2020 Toyota Tacoma.
The 2020 Toyota Tacoma sr5 blackout edition was reasonable priced for a pickup truck these days. Coming in at the mid to high 30’s it is fairly affordable... Toyota also provides financing at 0% with accepted credit. As for the truck itself it is roomy which makes it very comfortable and everyone knows that Toyota is a very reliable vehicle on the market today. This particular Tacoma has a nice set of black rims with bf Goodrich all terrain tires.

Third Tacoma, and overall, I have been very happy with every truck.
I am happy with my Tacoma except it does not have the power I am used to driving. It is a four cylinder, which is great on mileage, but limits my load capacity. Overall, I am very pleased with its performance and construction. This is my third Tacoma and they have never left me down.

Matte black interior is sharp.
Great truck, comfortable, does everything I need. Trim levels are perfect and nothing superfluous. New features are really nice, ie adaptive cruise, etc. Bed space is plenty for sleeping in, hauling gear, work material. I upgraded from 2013 Tacoma and have really enjoyed the new model.

2020 Toyota Tacoma off-road.
The off-road package is great. Crawl control really makes off road travel un-intimidating. The interior is not super spacious but it not to be expected with this size truck. Overall leg room is exceptional. Only issue so far that phone has to be plugged in to use the apple carplay features.

I love the color It's white and I think it looks amazing when it's clean.
There is no problems. I love the vehicle and if you are thinking of buying one. Do it.It's a nice car. My family and I love it. The back is spacious. The radio is amazing. It has Wi-Fi. The interior color is amazing. The a/c works great. The entire truck is a beauty inside and out. I would recommend buy one. It's the best decision you will make for sure.

Reliability
I purchased my truck mid June and I only have 1500 miles and its already in the shop. The ignition was faulty it froze up and produced a loud screeching sound while unable to disengage. They had to order a new ignition for a 4 month old truck and I had to ask for a loner since they didn't have the parts in stock.

The best vehicle you could ever purchase!
My 2020 Toyota Tacoma is the best vehicle I have ever owned. There is so many safety features on this vehicle that I absolutely love! It has 2 gigs of Wi-Fi every month, it reads your messages to you so you don't have to look at your phone while driving, it asks you if you want to respond and sends the message for you, it has the same sensor system as a tesla so it tells you when something so close to your vehicle or when you are going out of your lines, it also tells you when to break if it senses you are not slowing down fast enough. It will even help you slow down faster. It comes with google so all you have to do it push the button on the steering wheel and say 'ok google call (whoever you want to call). The ride itself is so smooth.

Bushing repair unit the first 3000 miles
Great truck so far, but I had a squeaking in the first 3000 miles and they had to replace a bushing. If I have any other issues I will post here, also will check in at 100,000 miles.

Toyota Tacoma 2020 review.
No problems reported or detected so far. The car performs as expected; very nice. Very reliable and secure. 100% comfortable. Specifically my car has a lot of features such as, sunroof, seat heater, GPS, airplay, and emergency bottom that works 24 hours.

Sturdy, reliable, good-looking!
Smoothest ride! No problems yet! I have had it for 5 months now and it has come in handy with moving and driving off-road. It is sturdy, good-looking, and reliable. I have had no problems with this vehicle yet and do not expect to have problems for some time. Toyota’s are made to last forever!

A cement gray Toyota Tacoma, four doors, short cab.
I have been leasing my Toyota Tacoma for nearly a year and have already decided to keep it forever when the three year lease is up. It is so fun to drive on freeways and roads that maybe are not quite roads. It is reliable and has had no problems thus far. Oil changes are easy. A recent 20 hour drive proved just how comfortable the Tacoma is. Over 10 hours a day, and you'd hardly be able to tell. Apple carplay is a wonderful feature for iPhone users. It connects painlessly and provides easy, hands free driving.

Voodoo blue Toyota Tacoma is a must have!
4x4 works great, even with 4 doors, the bed can still fit a lot. It is a little tight in the cabin depending where the front seats are. Bought new, and when I picked it up, it sounded like I had an exhaust leak but upon further inspection, that was just the sound of the motor. I didn't think it was a truck person but this Tacoma changed my mind!
