2019 Toyota Tacoma Review: Extremely Reliable Compact Truck That Holds Up Well Over Time

Alex Showalter
Dec 23, 2022

The 2019 Toyota Tacoma lasts around 350,000 miles with only some minor software and brake pad issues reported. At $23,700 to $39,900, it’s a good value for a nice truck that is capable off-road and is affordable to own long-term.

likeFilled The Good
Off-road performance is excellent, there’s a lot of standard safety technology and ownership costs are lower than other trucks.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The handling feels loose, the suspension is stiffer than the competition and there’s a lot of cabin noise.

The life of Tanya the Tacoma
I love the room in the truck and the 6 foot bed. I used to own a quad and I could load it right into the bed and shut the tailgate and go. I mainly have highway miles on my truck and it's lifted. I've had 2 recalls on the truck which isn't too bad.

Good deal, comfort features and great gas mileage.
Very reliable. Comfortable. Love the dashboard GPS. Bed is adequate. Easy maintenance. Good gas mileage. Easy drive. Like the four wheel drive. Handles the back roads well. Great visibility with the backup window on the dashboard. Can accommodate five people easily.

Toyota Tacoma sr5: perfect truck for me.
My 2019 Toyota Tacoma sr5 has been the perfect truck for me. I did not want something huge, so the four door regular cab was the perfect fit for me. Although it is a smaller truck, it is the perfect size to where I have not needed a bigger one. I do not have 4-wheel drive, but I can still tow my boat, as well as out it in and out of the water. I have had no problems with it, and it is very comfortable. The back seats are kind of small, however, but still fairly comfortable.
accountCircle Nate R
My truck is amazing, buy it now.
It drives very well and has enough room inside. The bed is high duty and can handle a lot. I love my truck. It is amazing. I think it should go and get awards for how good it is. It should be in the hall of fame of epic trucks. I love my truck so much hehehehehe.

Off-road midsize trd-pro king.
My truck has not really seen a lot of dirt as of late but it is my daily driver. Definitely can tell the difference when I drive it around and how it handles on the pavement. Interior of this trim is amazing and it is sound quality is top tier. Overall I am impressed with my purchase.
accountCircle William F
It has the technology package that is makes look more luxurious.
The cabin, even though I have a double cab (four door) the cabin is too small and whoever is in the back do not have a lot of legroom and in general it is not the most comfortable. The back does not have individual chair conditioner vents, they are only in the back, and it does not have USB ports in the back seats neither.
accountCircle Brooke B
Durable, simple but up to date and reliable.
This truck is the perfect truck if you want a reliable truck with some newer bells and whistles. The cruise control aid sometimes messes with the trucks transmission speed. Other than that I haven't noticed anything else slightly irritating. The bed of the truck is perfect for couple car camping. The gas mileage is decent for such a durable truck except when towing a camper!
accountCircle Nick D
I love my sunroof and rear window.
Handles great for a truck. Gas mileage is okay. I have a short bed with a hard folding cover which diminished the cargo space but it suits my needs. I have leather seats and they do not get to hot in the summer. I have seat warmers which help in the winter because they are pretty cold.

I’m in Brand new truck and it’s on fire. We have a major problem.
My 2019 Tacoma limited caught fire after 5300 miles and i happened to be asleep in the driver seat. Carlock Toyota in Tupelo ms sold me this vehicle. I only got to drive it for a month and a half. After it happened i wasn’t even given a rental car while insurance was looking into what happened. It has been 5 months and still nothing has been done.

2019 Tacoma Limited Piece of c**p!
This is my second Tacoma with the new body style. The new 3.5 liter V6 sucks! There a horrible lagging when you accelerate and the new 6 speed transmission is horrible!! Shifts into 6th gear when you’re only going 35mph. I will never buy another Tacoma!!!!! This was the second worst vehicle I’ve ever bought. The first mistake was the 2017 Tacoma

I got this paper weight truck for a week now and so unsatisfied and decided to bring it back and get another kind. It’s so light when you drive in the highway container truck just pushed me hard to control. Don’t think because it’s Toyota it means nothing at all full of c**p.

Check engine light came on after 1000 miles. Transmission is bucking at different speeds, feels like the truck is in to high of a gear for the speed it is going RPMs are around 1100-1200 when it occurs. Very disappointed wish I did not buy it. Would put zero stars but not an option.

Not at all impressed. Dull.
Ran it through the car wash 1st week. Whatever the rubber strip on both sides of the roof accomplish blew out. Was told by customer rep that if you take it through a car wash it voids your warranty???. Gearing ratio is a mess. 0 to 30 is a slug. (Scary slow) 30 to 70 is a rocket. Very loud in idle. Cheap tires. 15000 and already need replaced.was told by many it will be the last truck ill ever own. Ill go back to Ford if this thing continues its ways.

What Do Critics Say About the Toyota Tacoma?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2019 Tacoma is tough as nails with excellent reliability while also having high owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Tacoma at 3.6/5, praising the powerful V6 engine, but doesn’t like climbing into the tall cabin.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the 2019 Tacoma a 3.7/5, enjoying the off-road capabilities, but owners don’t like the low fuel economy.

What Common Problems Does the 2019 Toyota Tacoma Have?

Common problems found on the 2019 Toyota Tacoma include low speed vibrations, brake pedal fade while slowing down, as well as a failed EVAP canister. Overall, these problems are relatively minor compared to other trucks, leading to low repair bills as a Tacoma ages.

Low speed vibrations, primarily wile slowing down, are the most common complaint on the 2019 Toyota Tacoma. The transmission downshifting is the source of the problem. There are software updates available for the transmission which fix the issue. Most dealerships will install the software for free, while some may charge up to $100.

Brake pedal fade has also been mentioned by Tacoma owners at around 40,000 miles. If you tow or haul a lot of weight, the brakes will wear out faster. Replacing a set of brake pads costs around $350, while a new set of rotors is an additional $600.

A failed EVAP canister has also shown up on some 2019 Tacoma models in the first 25,000 miles. When the EVAP canister fails with so few miles, it’s usually covered under warranty and replaced for free. If your EVAP canister fails outside the factory warranty, then it’s about $550 to change it out.

There are four recalls on the 2019 Toyota Tacoma, which is similar to other small trucks from the same year. The most serious recalls both cover the fuel pump, which may fail as the truck ages. Toyota will replace the fuel pump for free on affected models. Other recalls cover the brake master cylinder seal, as well as some load capacity label issues.

How Long Will the 2019 Toyota Tacoma Last?

A well-maintained 2019 Toyota Tacoma can last around 350,000 miles, which is around 150,000 miles more than the Chevy Colorado. Regular annual maintenance costs are much lower than other trucks, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $355 per year.

As a used 2019 Toyota Tacoma reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the mass airflow sensor for $325, throttle position sensor costing $175, as well as the stabilizer bar links which cost around $200.

accountCircle Matthew Z

It is very reliable. It does not have any problems. It is easy to work on. In the past few months it has almost ten thousand miles and not one problem. It is been on long road trips. I would drive this truck cross country and not think anything of it.

accountCircle Matt W

It has 11,000 miles and so far there has been no mechanical issues. This car is still under warranty and only 7 months old.

accountCircle Steven F

As I stated before I have had no problems or issues with vehicle. Minus the necessary oil change and rotation of tires I have had no problems with the vehicle.

accountCircle Blake B

Hard to tell when to put into different gears and two many recalls already. Sometimes in driving the brakes seem off. And cannot get messages set up even though I went through all the commands

accountCircle Cynthia D

I haven't had any issue with this vehicle it is very reliable. This is one of the main reasons I purchased this vehicle. It is a solid dependable daily driver.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is nice in the 2019 Toyota Tacoma with a standard 6.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system. A larger 7-inch touchscreen is available as an optional upgrade. Unfortunately, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are still not offered on the 2019 Tacoma.

Safety technology is excellent for a truck since the Tacoma has Toyota Safety Sense. Standard features include a rearview camera, automatic high-beam headlights, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, along with adaptive cruise control. Optional advanced safety features include rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic alert.

Is the 2019 Toyota Tacoma a Good Value?

Yes, the 2019 Toyota Tacoma is a great value since it’s the most reliable compact truck on the market. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $23,700 to $39,900, making it more expensive than a Ford Ranger or GMC Canyon. When new, the price range was $25,850 to $45,665. Depreciation is better than other trucks, only losing about 4% of its current value per year.

What Engines Come In the Toyota Tacoma?

  • The base engine is a relatively weak 2.7L 4-cylinder which makes 159 horsepower while getting up to 21 MPG. It comes with a six-speed automatic transmission.
  • An available upgrade is the stronger 3.5L V6, which generates 278 horsepower at up to 21 MPG as well. This engine comes with either a six-speed automatic transmission or a six-speed manual transmission. Performance is good, taking 6.2 seconds to go from 0-60 MPH, and it can tow up to 6,800 pounds.

What Colors Does the Toyota Tacoma Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Toyota Tacoma?

The 2019 Toyota Tacoma is a reasonably comfortable compact truck with room for up to five passengers. It’s offered with either a two-door regular cab, or a four-door crew cab. Seating is comfortable, although some owners say the seats-backs are a bit firm.

Passenger room is good in the front seats, although the rear seats on the crew cab model still don’t have as much legroom as some other trucks on the market.

How Much Storage Space Does the Toyota Tacoma Have?

There are two bed lengths offered on the 2019 Toyota Tacoma including a 5-foot short bed, or the 6.1-foot standard bed.

VehicleHistory Image

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The third generation of the Toyota Tacoma was launched in 2016.

2015: New TRD Pro package added, regular two-door model discontinued.

2016: Fully redesigned for the third generation with a new interior, exterior, and technology.

2017: New TRD Pro model added to the lineup, power sliding rear window.

2018: Manual transmission removed from 4-cylinder engine, Toyota Safety Sense standard on all models.

2019: More USB ports added to all models, TRD Pro model upgraded.

2020: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto added to all models, improved driver’s seat, surround-view camera with underbody features.

2021: Upgraded stereo offered in TRD Sport and TRD Off-Road models, Trail and Nightshade models introduced.

How Does the Toyota Tacoma Compare to the Competition?

The 2019 Toyota Tacoma is the best compact truck on the market since it pairs excellent long-term reliability with some great off-road capabilities.

The Chevy Colorado is another small truck which costs around $3,000 less. Passenger room is better in the Chevy Colorado, while the Toyota Tacoma has fewer mechanical problems reported. We recommend the Toyota Tacoma since ownership costs are much lower as they age.

The Honda Ridgeline is a competitor which is available for around $2,000 more. Interior materials are nicer in the Honda Ridgeline, while the Toyota Tacoma is more capable off-road. We recommend the Toyota Tacoma if you want a more authentic truck experience since the Honda Ridgeline drives like an SUV with a bed.

Yes. It is the best vehicle I have ever owned. The motor and transmission are really good. It is gets really good miles to the gallon. It is really roomy inside. It you all the bells and whistles. The regular sized bed it perfect size and it has movable tie down hooks in the bed rail system.

Yes. It has the highest resale value and is rated very high in dependability and reliability. Also the maintenance is low and inexpensive.

After having the vehicle for a year I would highly suggest a Tacoma. I have had very little to no problems with the vehicle itself. I was involved in a small collision and get secure in the vehicle. It is a great midsize truck with average gas rate. I have had little maintenance to do and knowing it keeps its value is key for wanting to trade in for a later time.

No, not enough room and needs more convenient features, short beds are two small and the compartments in the bed storage can be stolen. No explanation on how the plug in works in the back of the bed

Best Truck Around
I purchased my 2019 TRD Off Road used with 48,000 miles in 2022. I have had it for two years now and it is at 112,000 miles. I do a ton of rough driving, both highway and off road for work, and this truck takes it like a champ! The only maintenance I’ve had to do is routine stuff (brakes and oil) and I had to replace the clutch at approximately 90k miles. I think the clutch would last much longer if I didn’t have to ask so much of it turning around on crazy hills for work and if the prior owner wasn’t using it to tow. The gas mileage leaves something to be desired, but I typically average around 19 mpg with E rated tires. I’m going to drive this truck until the wheels fall off or it spontaneously combusts and then I’ll buy another taco! Highly recommend even though they are $$$.

My 2019 Toyota Tacoma trd pro review.
My trd pro Tacoma is one of if not my favorite vehicle I have ever owned. Runs great, rides great, plenty of power for what I need. Interior fit and finish is really good, the quality of the materials is the best in the industry. My only small complaint is that Toyota has not quite figured out how to deliver performance and great gas mileage. My Tacoma only gets about 18-20 mpg while other competitors do better. I do not mind spending an extra few $ at the pump vs a ford or Chevy because my Tacoma's resale value will be 30% more than those other brands when I go to sell it.

This vehicle drives very smoothly and have not come across any issues since purchased a year ago. It is very reliable and comfortable. The truck does what you want it do with zero drama.
The truck is great, it had zero issues does the job very well, the engine (v6) has enough power to get up to speed on freeways or pulling away from others through to get the power its mostly in the high rpm. Its quite comfortable and has the needed features for its price point even though the technology is outdated for 2019 especially when it comes in the infotainment area. But overall solid truck.

Great truck for first time truck owners.
My 2019 Toyota Tacoma is great. It is a perfect size for those who like pickups but do not want a giant vehicle. I have used it to haul furniture, trash, wood, and other items with no issues whatsoever. The safety features (collision sensing, lane sensing, automatic braking) are top notch. It also gets really good gas mileage for a pick up truck. The only complaint I have is the passenger door can be a little hard to close sometimes and I wish the base model came with a key fob.

If you have kids the highlander is for you!
If you have kids the highlander is the perfect car for you! The highlander has tons of leg room! Seats 7-8 depending on if you get a bench or captain seats. The gas mileage is not the best but it is a v6 so it definitely has some power. The space in the truck is minimal when the 3rd row is up. But when it is down there is so much space. My favorite part is that there is an option for the driver to turn on a speaker that makes it loud in the back for the kids to hear!

Cruise control feature is top of the line.
Nothing. I love my truck. Especially the cruise control and crawl option. It is great for four wheel drive so we can go camping where most vehicles cannot. It runs smoothed. I like the color of mines which is cement gray. Being that it is a four door truck I can take my whole family with me wherever I go.

Just an ok truck. Maybe newer models will have better features.
The Tacoma truck is very sporty looking. The stereo system is junk. Connecting your Bluetooth to the system can be spotty. The low beams on the truck are safety issues in my opinion. When driving at night on a curvy road, you cannot see that far ahead with your low beams. The truck itself is spacey in the front seats, but very limited in the back seats.

The size is just right, not too big.
The Toyota Tacoma is one of the highest resale values in the car industry. So far after 14,000 miles, there have been no issues. The transmission could be smoother, perhaps an 8 speed transmission and the v6 is a little weak. It is very stylish compared to other trucks.

This vehicle is very comfortable to drive. The gas mileage is anywhere between 20-24 mpg depending on how you drive. If you hit anywhere above 100 mph then you do begin to sway a little but overall nice vehicle. Also somewhat pricey so be warned that payments can be around 500 a month.

2019 Toyota Tacoma sr, the look good, feel good, do good of all vehicles.
As far as problems I have no complaints yet. It drives very smooth and handles well in all terrains I have taken it so far. Very reliable, I feel like you cannot go wrong with Toyota’s, they usually have a long life span. Very spacious and comfortable, enough leg room to stretch out, seats are very comfortable and the a/c gets cold enough to freeze you. One of the features I love is the self lowering tailgate, it is simple but so handy and effective. The back up cam is also a favorite.

Great gas mileage (16 city, 20 highway) really depends on your driving habits.
It is small for my liking like bed size (5 foot bed) and cargo weight (800 lbs approximately), current options are limited such as ability to add XM radio, diff lock, heated seats, auto dim mirrors, and it only had two wiper speeds, slow and fast. Gas mileage is great (16 city, 20 highway). Recommend getting the automatic transmission as the manual transmission seems like it takes too much time to go through the gears.

My Tacoma has been nothing but reliable for me. I have not had any issues whatsoever! The ride is comfortable and quiet. Even though it is a quiet ride the truck certainly does not lack any power. Nothing is more reliable than a Tacoma.
Awesome light to medium duty truck. Reliability is solid. Only pitfalls are the brakes being sensitive (one toe worth of pressure will jerk the vehicle) and the electronic suite requiring some time to get used to. Best features are an outstanding off-road control system, spacious rear seat for a light truck (4-door model), and plenty of aftermarket add on options.

Great reliable truck, that could have better transmission characteristics.
The truck has had fantastic reliability. It is pretty spacious for a midsize truck. The transmission could respond much better on the highway. The power is okay, it gets the job done. I really wish Toyota would have used an engine that made power in the lower rpms. It would help significantly when towing. I notice my small trailer and zero turn when towing.

Lack of power when accelerating to highway speeds. It tends to be a rough ride. The bed lining is slick. On the positive side since I am a die-hard Toyota lover it does have the reliability to come true expected love from a Japanese vehicle. Also the gas mileage is pretty good for a smaller size truck with only a 4 cylinder engine.

2019 Toyota Tacoma review from owner.
It is smaller to easily maneuver while parking and turning and backing up but also strong enough to pull a boat or bushes in the yard. Easy touch screen for most features, runs well, built to last. Comfortable seats, cloth not leather so not unbearable in the heat.

2019 Tacoma trd sport review.
Love the ride, performance and technology. Only issue is a recall for the fuel pump which is a no hassle fix! This has been by far my favorite vehicle i've ever owned and only being 27 years old iv had 12 vehicles all different brands and models. Never looked back after buying my Tacoma and will never get rid of it.

You should buy this truck.
The Toyota Tacoma is safe and comfortable to drive. The longer I own in the better gas mileage it gets. I would like to see charging capabilities in the back seat along with better cup holders. Heated seats would be nice too. I am very pleased with this vehicle and feel safe with my daughter in it.

The Tacoma is built well, but the media technology could use some sprucing up.
I have had my truck for just over a year now, and I absolutely love it! My only complaint is that I think Toyota should move on or upgrade from the iTunes software. Besides that, it drives great and handles well with any task I have put it up against. The rail system in the truck bed is handy.

Fun, and full of adventure
I love the sporty look and feel of the Tacoma. Just a bit disappointed with the horsepower it delivers. The off-road features are beyond great and it is great to take it out on the weekends off-roading or out camping. My average gas mileage is 15 miles to the gallon so I believe that can be slightly improved.

Toyota Tacoma made to be driven in comfort.
Very reliable, easy to drive and comes with a lot of features. With the cost of fuel it is very economical and easy to maintain. Toyota's offer an array of styles and super comfortable both inside and super stable feeling on the road. Solid ride and nice and quiet inside.

Great truck! Lots of features.
It is very comfortable and it drives smoothly. I really enjoy the sunroof and the heated seats. Having dual temperature control is great for couples. The onboard GPS is very helpful during long trips to unknown destinations. The touch screen is an easy way to navigate through all the different features of the truck.

Calvary blue Toyota Tacoma.
I absolutely love my Toyota Tacoma. It is extremely reliable. I have taken it on many longer trips and it gets great gas mileage. Overall, it is really comfortable and has a great amount of storage. The bed is just big enough to fit my kayak and bike.

Tacoma trd off-road review.
Amazing longevity, comfort, and off road. Most versatile vehicle for an outdoor lifestyle. It is also a 6 speed manual transmission that is a blast to drive. So much aftermarket support like bumpers, suspension and Billie bars bed rack system. I wouldn't change anything about it, other than removable top.

Tacoma great overall truck.
The comfort level is great, while the features could be better in the interior. As well as possibly adding a pull up bar for the driver like previous year model. The truck runs smooth and is perfect size for an everyday usage truck. The screen is a decent size and the backup camera works like a charm.

Toyota Tacoma: a very reliable vehicle.
I have owned my 2019 Toyota Tacoma for 2.5 years thus far and have not encountered a single problem with performance, reliability, comfort, or any features. It is a reliable vehicle that holds value in ownership. I would recommend that anyone searching for a new vehicle look into buying a Toyota Tacoma.

The truck has a great ride comfort unlike any other truck on market.
This truck is perfect for someone who needs some sort of pickup bed but does not want to deal with a full size truck. I drive into the city everyday so this truck was perfect being that it was compact but still does everything I need it to. The aftermarket options for upgrades if your interested is a very wide variety of parts that can be changed/upgraded. Overall an enjoyable truck to drive, the only downside is the back seats may be a little harder to fit car seats if you have kids that need that. Other than that this truck is super reliable and super safe.

Sporty looking truck with several amenities not typically found in most trucks.
The truck handles great. We have had no issues. Gas mileage is good around town and on the freeway. The cab is spacious and comfortable. The sound system is very good both in the front and back seats. Love the camera for going in reverse. The maintenance plan saves us money for the first 3 years of ownership.

The sr5 is a dependable model with only a few shortcomings.
While the sr5 does not come standard with 4 wheel drive, it still has enough power to handle easier off road terrains. For a truck, it has decent gas mileage, and has a sleek interior. The only issue I have had so far is that there is very little leg room for those sitting in the back seats.

Reliable and worth the investment
Been the original owner since 2006 and have had no major issues. Doesn't leak any oil anywhere, and has been a solid performer. Toyota took care of me with a frame recall, and I expect to have the truck for another 10 years. Routine maintenance along with replacing very minor parts has kept this truck looking great.

Always reliable and great looking truck!
Love this vehicle, always reliable and great looking. No issues to report at all. Does not have the luxury aspect of a lot of cars but most trucks are not for their amenities. I have noticed in the past with Toyota’s that the good jiggles while driving but this is not an issue for me.

Toyota Tacoma: a reliable choice.
I love the comfort, reliability, and performance of my truck. The long bed helps with home improvement projects. I regularly go camping and off-roading, and it is so much fun to drive. Gets great gas mileage. I also love that it is one of the safest vehicles for my family.

Color of my truck Calvary Blue is the best
Truck is great, no issues at all. Resale value is the best for these trucks. I love and get more compliments for the color of my truck. The color is called Calvary Blue. I wish my truck got better gas mileage. I also wish my truck had more leg room in it.
