2020 Toyota RAV4 Review: Very Dependable Compact SUV With Affordable Ownership Costs

Alex Showalter
Mar 29, 2023

The 2020 Toyota RAV4 lasts around 300,000 miles with some relatively minor battery drain and brake noise issues. At $25,600 to $37,625, it’s expensive, but worth the price for an extremely reliable small SUV with low ownership costs.

Great features of 2020 rav4.
We love the reliability and great gas mileage of the 2020 rav4. The safety features (blind spot monitoring, lane detection, and radar enforced cruise control) are our favorite features. The heated seats and steering wheel are great for cold mornings. We are thrilled with our purchase!

An interesting detail about the car is how easy it is to drive. It drives well.
I love my car! It is so great as an everyday vehicle because of how it able to carry of all of family and everything I need. Not to mention the money I save with due to the car being a hybrid! I only need to fill up almost only once a month as the fuel range of this car is so great. I love my car and you should consider it too!

The new spacious rav 4. Love the look and it is affordable!
I have only had my new vehicle for 2 weeks but I absolutely love my 2020 rav4. Drives very smooth very durable and reliable vehicle. Lots of room for a small SUV fun to drive. Great for taking my grandchildren places. Looking forward to having my rav 4 for a long time.

Awesome red ride that will not disappoint.
My SUV is awesome with perfect height as I am really short. Great gas mileage, color is my favorite which is red. I love the features with the large screen with options for my phone and music. Multiple USB outlets. Great space for people to travel and ride in the back seat. Nice trunk space, interior is two toned which speaks volumes to me.

Love the ride, it is smooth and glides down the road. Love added remote start.
This SUV rides great! Love the assist hatch opener. No heavy lifting, it raises all the way up. Push button to close. Had remote start added and love it but it seems dumb to have to have both the original key fob plus the new remote or the car will not start. Love the push button start and end.

I recommend this small SUV to all the moms out there.
I absolutely love my car, it is good on gas, it is a gas saver, drives smooth like a real luxury car. It is affordable for me and the room space is perfect for my size family. I will not trade it for nothing else. I might just keep my bestie, that is her name, when my lease is up.

The rave 4 is a good vehicle.
He rav4 is one of the best vehicles I have ever owned. It runs smoothly and has a ton of safety features. It also has some great new features like lane verification and a hold feature when the vehicle is stopped that allows you to remove your foot from the break until it is time to move again. It also will drive itself when using cruise control.

I love my comfy, spacious and safe rav4.
I love my rav4. I love the size of it-it’s not too large but not too small. It has great trunk space and a spacious back seat. I have a toddler to space and safety were my two main concerns when shopping for a car. This car has great safety features. I like the blind spot detectors. We upgraded for the trunk assist and weather features which are so worth it. The interior is really nice. The fabric of the seats is easy to clean (again another plus with a toddler). It is very comfortable. I have had it for a few months now and so far I do not have one single complaint. I cannot say enough good things about my car.

I cant leave the defogger fan on to heat windshield
Ok, I live in Iowa. I got the 2020 rav4 February 12, 2020. Winters are awful here. A lot of snow. Problem is I need the windshield defogger to be on full force so we can get the rav warm and melt snow and ice off the windshield. The fan defaults to another slower setting after we use the remote starter to turn the car on in the morning. This wont work for us. We bought a Viper remote start because our dealer wont put in remotes anymore installed by Ford and Garland Electonics in Des Moines. Another dealer installs remote starters but NOT a Toyota brand. There ought to be a way to reprogram the climate control panel. I dont know who the genius who was that thought this up but its not working out to put the settings on that I need but when I start the car they default to a slow fan setting. The service department at the dealer said sorry that just the way it is. WTH? Customer service at Toyota in Texas says sorry theres no way to reprogram it. This stinks. My wife is a NICU nurse that goes to work at 6:15am then gets home from work at 8pm. We need the fan to work on high. Please toyota help us our. Reengineer it, Please. I've looked today at Fords and Kia's and they dont have this issue. Rav4 is a lemon as it is. Gish. Normal cars dont do this. Our 2003 Saturn Vue didnt do this and thats what we replaced to get the 2020 rav4.

Disliked the car after 30 miles.
I rented a new Rav4 for two weeks. I disliked it after thirty miles. I hated it by day five. Does someone test the cars before they start manufacturing such junk. When you lower the rear windows, right, left or both I hear "whoa whoa whoa" sound. The slightest breeze causes insibility. The thing pulls all over the place. No idea if features can be turned off or not but 4-5 of them need to go away. So glad I'm getting my high mileage car back in a few days.

Unreliable. No problem fixes from Toyota. Pathetic.
Go to "toyotanation" or "ravworld" and read about battery failures, gas tank issues, suspension... The RAV4 is half baked and totally unreliable.

Cargo Mat/Support under the mat
The folding support under the floor mat is about 1/2 narrower than it should be, so if you put anything in the back that weighs more than 40 lbs the support collapses. This should be a recall, depending on how heavy and how long the ride is, the support under mat will eventually be damaged and the mat will sit on top of the spare tire.
accountCircle ST Balimtas
Mistake in manufacturing - too small or too wide
The only issue I'm having is the support piece under the trunk mat. Someone measured incorrectly and the piece does not fit snug. There is about 1/2" gap, causing the support piece to fall if anything more than 30lbs in placed on top of it. Complained to the dealer, however, nothing they can do since its a manufacturing mistake

What Do Critics Say About the Toyota RAV4?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2020 Toyota RAV4 has drawn cues from their truck line in updating the RAV4, with average owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the RAV4 at 3.4/5, praising the passenger space, but doesn’t like the boring engine.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the RAV4 a 3.6/5, enjoying the spacious interior, but owners don’t like the noise levels in the cabin.

What Common Problems Does the 2020 Toyota RAV4 Have?

Common problems found on the 2020 Toyota RAV4 include excessive battery drain, a rattling driver’s side mirror, along with brake noise. Overall, these problems are similar to other small SUVs on the market, leading to low repair costs as the Toyota RAV4 ages.

Excessive battery drain is the most widespread complaint on the 2020 Toyota RAV4, showing up in the first 5,500 miles. If you notice the battery draining quickly, then it’s usually caused by an electrical accessory that stays on when the vehicle is off. Diagnosing the source of the problem usually costs under $50, and fixing it can cost $50 to $150, depending on the issue.

A rattling driver side mirror is another issue that shows up on some RAV4 models in the first 1,000 miles. The problem is usually caused by damaged clips or an improperly installed mirror. Replacing the mirror glass is usually done under warranty when it shows up in the first 1,000 miles, although out of warranty it’s about a $75 part.

Brake noise also shows up on some 2020 Toyota RAV4 models at around 2,500 miles. In some cases the brake noise is normal, while in others it can be a sign of excessive brake wear. If you regularly brake hard while carrying a lot of weight, it will wear down the pads quickly. Replacing the brake pads costs around $380, while a new set of rotors is roughly $400.

There are five recalls on the 2020 Toyota RAV4, which is average for a small SUV. The most serious recall covers the fuel pump, which may fail and cause the engine to stall. Toyota will replace the fuel pump in affected models for free. Other recalls cover the lower suspension arms, along with electronic power steering assist. Toyota will also fix those issues for free.

How Long Will the 2020 Toyota RAV4 Last?

A well-maintained 2020 Toyota RAV4 can last around 300,000 miles, which is around 50,000 miles more than the popular Honda CR-V. Regular annual maintenance costs are lower than many competitors, according to data provided by Repair Pal at $379 per year.

As a used 2020 RAV4 reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the coolant reservoir for $400, stabilizer bushings costing $220, along with the drive belt idler pulley which costs $150.

HeatedSeats not as hot after first service visit
We purchased a 2020 Rav4 XLE Premium Sept 2020 which worked fine until after I brought it to the dealership at 8K km for first dealer inspection and tire rotation. Two days later, the battery was dead - had to get a jump-start from Toyota roadside service. Brought it to the dealer for testing - no fault found. Note, neither the headlights nor interior lights were not left on to drain the battery. Two weeks later my wife notice that the heated seats which previously worked extremely well are barely warm on both driver and passenger sides (the rear seats are not heated in this model). We have not had a return of the dead battery issue and this August will bring the Rav4 in for its first oil change where we will ask the dealership to check the heating issue, This model does not have ventilated seats. All our problems began after our first scheduled dealer service visit.

Not much room for car seats.
Very reliable car with great gas mileage. However, this car has an issue with the gas tank and there will likely be a recall/ replacement on some parts so it will have to be in the shop for some time to get it repaired even though it is a brand new 2020. Also, the back seat is spacious enough for passengers but two car seats do not fit very well without reducing front seat space.

My vehicle is great for transportation of self and things! Super roomy and has a decent sized trunk, could be larger. The colors are not so cute. Very generic and boring. Having a major issue
I bought this car less than six months ago and have had to replace the windshield going on three times now. I’ve had many cars in my lifetime and I’ve never had to replace a windshield from something clicking on it, the first time it broke it was in the driveway and we have a security camera so someone didn’t break it. I’ve also been doing research online and this is happening to many other people so obviously Toyota needs to do something about their windshields. Otherwise the car is fantastic in every way, shape and form. But I have gotten absolutely no help from Toyota on this windshield issue so I will never buy another one of their cars no matter how amazing the rest of it is if they can help me with one single solitary thing which is the windshield. ?

Brand new 2020 Toyota Rav 4 with brake issues
I haven't used this new vehicle for more than 1 month and I'm receiving brake light warning while driving. Contacted the dealership to diagnose the problem and I was told they will get back to me. It's been two days already, nobody has gotten back to me. This is obviously a lemon.

You can choose what to see on your odometer which I thought was pretty neat.
It is kid friendly, I feel safe inside and on the rode, has apple CarPlay, speakers are great, it is all terrain which is great, has blind spot lights on the mirrors, has the back facing camera at the rear end, a full tank of gas gives you at least 400 miles.

Good but not great. Like but not loving it.
Great comfortable easy to drive. Great safety features. Gas mileage is great. Love all safety features the offer on vehicle. Wish they had a better color choice but settle with blue. Not many colts to choice from. Lots room for traveling. I like it but do not love it. But will get used to driving a bigger vehicle.

Great good looking car, drivers extremely smoothly and so beautiful. I love car!
I love everything about my car however the XLE does not have the automatic back door lifter. It is manual and I was told that only XLE premium have that function. The other complaint is that when you stopped and hold the break completely down it turns off your car, it takes a bit getting used to. Overall love the car.
accountCircle Jennifer M on March 16, 2021
I do not have to use my key to unlock the car.
I got XLE but does not even have any extra features or a sunroof or a button to open my trunk for me at the very minimum. If a car is going to be XLE then it should come with all the cool features not just have them as optional or listed as “if equipped”. Does not make sense.

Comfortable, dynamic, elegant, affordable deal.
Toyota rav4 2020 great car, comfortable, space, dynamics, top of the line useful features, great nav system, very economic even with the sport move on. Great camera view open wide to have a clean view when r, mirror feature for other cars approaching, different view for control panel.

Good price, comfortable driving, comfortable seats.
I have not face any problem. Its so comfortable, it could have charger pad, but it doesn't. And android app does not work as good as apple app for navigation. Current model does not have navigation on the monitor. Doesn't have sunroof, and only driver seat has electric control setting.

I do appreciate the large screen radio/rear camera view.
The vehicle is slightly less spacious in the back seat compared to a previously older model that we had. It has also been a little difficult trying to figure out how to get the bright headlights on. At times the autocorrect steering is a nuisance as well when trying to steer away from another swerving vehicle.

I enjoy driving the vehicle and hope to continue to be.
The vehicle is new so there are no long term issues that affect my ability to drive the vehicle or my overall displeasure with the vehicle. Drives well and has modern features, apple carplay, drive assist, etcetera. I am happy with the performance of the vehicle and hope to continue to be.

The car. Controlled cruise. Control is my favorite aspect of the car.
Reliable. Good gas mileage. Good in the winter. Is all wheel drive and runs smoothly both in town and on the highway. Nice touch screen for radio and navigation. Backup camera is a nice feature as well as the sun roof. I drive mostly highway and the cruise. Control setting is awesome. It slows. You down automatically as you get close to another car.

The rav4 upgraded audio package is awesome!
My rav4 XLE premium is awesome. I love the leather seats and upgraded jbl audio performance package. If I could improve one thing it would be that heated seats come standard on the model. Additionally, the vast variety of colors for both the interior and exterior helped me find one that was right for me.

Affordable luxury and comfort.
Very reliable and comfortable. Great on gas. Sounds system works very well. Incredibly affordable. Great to have a backup camera age for children in back seat. Room for luggage too. Functioning air bags. Good mirror placement and control. Good 4 wheel drive.

2020 rav4 on the beach - a++.
This is my first SUV and I love it. It is so easy to load things in and out of and has plenty of room for us to go for a weeks vacation or an extended camping trip. We take the rav out on the beaches of martha’s vineyard and it handles deep soft sand like a dream. I have driven on those beaches for 15 years and I wasn't worried taking the rav out. Nothing it couldn’t handle. The auto-stop and brake hold make traffic & commuting easier, and more fuel efficient.

It is just perfect. Grey is a very nice color if you are thinking about buying it.
It is perfect if you like bigger cars. When you drive, it makes no sound, it is super comfortable. There’s ac and heating. There’s also chargers everywhere where you can plug in your charger and it’ll charge right there for you. It is also spacious. The music speakers are amazing b.
