Alex Showalter
Mar 21, 2023

The 2020 Toyota Highlander lasts around 300,000 miles with some minor A/C compressor and door seal issues reported. At $29,675 to $44,675, it’s expensive, but worth the cost for one of the most reliable midsize SUVs on the market.

I really enjoy my 2020 highlander! It drives really well gets good gas mileage. Is big enough for my family of 4 and has extra room when I need it. This is my second highlander and I would recommend it to any and everyone! I have never had any issues with my Toyota.

Love my car love the technology it brings. It is also amazing how it has a lot of charging front and in the back. Also the fact that it has a control of heating and getting the cold side in the back seat. I love the sunroof and you could see the sun in the top.

The Toyota highlander is very smooth and comfortable. It is very spacious from the inside and very affordable. Also I do not have to spend a lot on gas, it is an sub but it feels like a small car. Great family car, safety and comfort.
The Toyota highlander has been a great addition to our growing family. I have two children in car seats and there is plenty of room for both boys and all things needed, stroller, diaper bags etc. The safety features were a big reason why we chose to go with Toyota and the comfort level is a bonus.

Love my highlander and the way it looks and rides.
I love the smooth ride. All of the bells and whistles except the sunroof. The lane cross ding can drive you nuts, but keeps you watching the road. It could have less noise from the outside. And if you hit a bump with a window partially open, it sounds like it will come out. Mine is midnight sparkle and I love the color. Love the lock with one finger mode. Love the rear closing with the push of a button. Hard to keep clean underneath the back overhang.

Total Satisfaction
I've been a Toyota owner since 1986 and I have never been so disappointed in the interior features as I am with my 2020 Highlander. After 30+ years of Toyota SUVs I guess I assumed too much and should have scrutinized my purchase more carefully. The sun visors are very short with no extensions, there is no sun tint across the top of the windshield, no option for a CD player, media setup does not recognize AUX plug-ins (the sales manager assured me it did), door bottom design allows road spray to build up on the inside of the doors requiring frequent wiping (poor engineering design). The acceleration is a bit rough but once you've reached your desired speed it's a smooth ride. I can't believe I paid so much money to be unhappy. My hopes are the engine and mechanical reliability stays the same. Good luck!

What Do Critics Say About the Toyota Highlander?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2020 Toyota Highlander is a smart choice for families looking for a do-it-all SUV, with high owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Highlander at 3.9/5, praising the comfortable suspension, but doesn’t like the limited legroom in the third row.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Highlander a 4.2/5, enjoying the advanced safety features, but owners don’t like the small cargo area behind the third row.

What Common Problems Does the 2020 Toyota Highlander Have?

Common problems found on the 2020 Toyota Highlander include the A/C compressor leaking, wind noise from the side mirrors, along with chipping paint on the front bumper. Overall, most of these problems are relatively minor for a midsize SUV, leading to low repair costs as it ages.

The A/C compressor leaking is the most serious complaint on the 2020 Highlander. Owners report the condenser leaking oil at around 6,000 miles. Usually, if it leaks it’s a sign of a failed seal in the compressor, which has to be replaced. Often the compressor is replaced under warranty, although if it’s out of warranty it costs around $650 to change it out.

Wind from the side mirrors is another issue mentioned by Highlander owners in the first 3,000 miles. Some wind noise is normal, although if you have excessive wind noise you will want to check the door and window seals. Usually dealerships will repair the seals for free under warranty if there’s an installation error. Out of warranty, they cost around $150 to swap out.

Chipping paint on the front bumper also shows up on some Highlander models in the first 10,000 miles. If you use your Highlander for highway driving eventually the large front bumper will get hit by small stones, causing chips. The only way to fix chipping paint is by repainting the affected area, at a cost of around $1,000 per panel.

There are two recalls on the 2020 Toyota Highlander, which is better than some other SUVs. The most serious recall is for the ECU software, which Toyota will update for free. There’s also a recall that only affects 3,121 models for incorrect seat trim.

How Long Will the 2020 Toyota Highlander Last?

A well-maintained 2020 Toyota Highlander can last around 300,000 miles, which is around 50,000 miles more than the popular Honda Pilot. Regular annual maintenance costs are much lower than other midsize SUVs, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $408 per year.

As a used 2020 Highlander reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the windshield wiper motor for $350, the transmission oil cooler line costing $200, along with the liftgate support struts which cost $115.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is excellent with a standard 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Optional upgrades include a larger 12.3-inch touchscreen along with more powerful stereo choices.

Standard safety technology is fantastic, offering:

  • Lane trace assist
  • Automatic high beam headlights
  • Forward automatic emergency braking
  • Rearview camera
  • Lane departure warning
  • Forward collision warning
  • Cyclist and pedestrian detection
  • Adaptive cruise control

Optional driver assistance features include:

  • Rain-sensing windshield wipers
  • Head-up display
  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Surround-view parking camera system
  • Traffic sign recognition
  • Adaptive headlights
  • Rear cross traffic alert
  • Front and rear parking sensors

Is the 2020 Toyota Highlander a Good Value?

Yes, the 2020 Toyota Highlander is a good value since it’s an extremely reliable choice with low ownership costs. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $29,675 to $44,675, making it more than a Subaru Ascent or Volkswagen Atlas. When new, the price range was $34,600 to $48,800. Depreciation is better than other SUVs, only losing about 4% of its current value per year.

How Does the Toyota Highlander Compare to the Competition?

The 2020 Toyota Highlander is an excellent midsize SUV, offering a lot of room for passengers while still having better reliability ratings than other choices on the market, helping it earn our recommendation.

The Honda Pilot is another midsize SUV on the market which is around $2,000 cheaper. Passenger room is a bit better in the Honda Pilot, while the Toyota Highlander offers lower ownership costs. We recommend the Toyota Highlander since it’s more reliable, although both are worth taking a look at since they’re great SUVs.

The Ford Explorer is a slightly larger SUV which is available for $3,500 less. Cargo and passenger space are both better in the Ford Explorer, while the Toyota Highlander has higher long-term reliability ratings. We recommend the Toyota Highlander since it lasts longer with fewer owner complaints.

Very comfortable and reliable vehicle.
The highlander rides really smooth and gentle. It has a lot of safety features that allows my to truly feel comfortable inside and driving the vehicle. The space is really open with the captain's chair middle row. With the third row seat up you still have plenty of trunk room. The third row is easy to put up and take down and as well there is plenty of room.

A couple issues with 2020 highlander compared to others in this class.
Performance is good. No reliability issues. The touch screen can be a little problematic. Sometimes you have to press multiple times to select what you want. I wish it had automatic door locks when you walk away and memory seating for multiple drivers.

2020 Toyota highlander XLE.
So far so good. Assisted driving takes some getting used too but makes a long drive so much nicer. The car will keep a certain distance from the vehicle in front of you when cruise is set. Cruise will also slow you down going down hill. Your able to start your car with your phone from anywhere and track your driving habits with the app. 2nd row seating is just as comfortable as the front on long family trips. The ability to choose the surface your driving on really works going from paved to gravel. Would recommend to anyone.

Toyota 2020 highlander car review.
Some of the problems that I have with my highlander is that it is very sensitive with the brake and drive pedals, but other than that I really love it. Unreliable Heads Up Display
Just got a 2020 Platinum a month ago. The Road Sign Assist on the Heads Up Display is very unreliable. It will not see half of the speed limit signs, and if you have the over speed alarm turned on, it can go off when it isn’t supposed to...like if you were in a 55 and the camera didn’t maybe a 70 sign, when you speed up the alarm goes off. I have had to turn mine off. Don’t know how much extra that added to the cost, but I consider it a toy, and one that can be dangerous at that if you depend on it. You aren’t to.d of it’s shortfall until you have purchased the car and read the owners manual and see a huge list of disclaimers.

The Toyota highlander is a reliable, smooth riding vehicle. It has really nice interior and exterior. I enjoy cameras, all “smart” buttons and whistles. I feel very safe in Toyota highlander. It is spacious as well for a road trip with the family of four including two kids under 18.

Nice ride
I love everything about this SUV except the interactive cruise control. That still needs some work! Overall the vehicle deserves a five star rating!

The front seats have a built in a/c and conditioner which is greater.
The spacing in the back is an issue. People in the third row have no room for their legs. I feel as though the car has a lot of room but it is poorly constructed. Also the sound is great but it just does not seem loud or clear enough unless you are in the front row, even after moving the center of the music to the middle.

My shiny white baby has tinted windows.
This vehicle has been nothing but amazing! It made like the most perfect birthday gift I am telling you. It has a lot of space and even three throws of seats! Perfect for a mama with kids. Sometimes my mom even tries to borrow the car haha. Mine is in the white color and I absolutely love my baby. So comfortable to drive around in when heading somewhere far.

Highlights of the highlander.
We've had zero problems with this vehicle! It rides and drives smoothly. We love the size-it’s perfect for moving things by folding the seats down, but we can also fit a lot of passengers because of the third row seating. It handles well and we feel safe due to the safety features that Toyota automatically includes in their vehicles.

Great features and a completely reliable and durable vehicle.
This vehicle is extremely reliable and durable. I love that it has a lot of cargo space but also can seat many people. It is a great car if you like being out and about or if you need a family car. The features are great as well. There are many small details that just really make it an even more excellent car. I also trust Toyota’s completely.

Loved highlander highlight.
No issues with the vehicle. I love everything about it. Great navigation system, sound system, and ac. It has great rear ceiling ac for kids in the hot summer day, and sun screens on the back windows. I love the sound system it surrounds you with your favorite music, and has Wi-Fi in your vehicle.

It has a wine color, very sparkly and pretty.
It is really nice and comfortable to ride in. It has XM radio so I can flip through stations and stuff. Comfortable seats and I can warm them when it is cold. I do not know what else to say but the car is nice and I like riding in it. One time I slept in it, and it was comfortable enough to stay sleep for hours in the parking lot.

Great car for the comfort and for the price.
No problems, drives smooth and quiet. Lots of room. Controls a little confusing. Sales people at Toyota very helpful. Service dept is great, will take you at least minute if necessary.. Car is great for driving on long trips. With back seat down storage is great.

It is very secure and safe to use on the highway.
I love the fact on how it helps me see the back when the car is in reverse. Also the audio quality when I connect my phone through via Bluetooth. It helps me to get rid of the fear that I'll bump into a another car since it would beep if something is on the way like the blind sides of the car.
