2014 Nissan Altima Review: A Cheap Sedan With A High Cost of Ownership

Alex Showalter
Jan 21, 2022

The 2014 Nissan Altima is a midsize sedan with a price range of $11,929 to $16,938. A lot of complaints from owners and expensive transmission failures make the Altima a car buyers should avoid.

likeFilled The Good
The infotainment technology is up-to-date and easy to use, interior materials are nice for the price, and the V6 engine offers good power for a sedan.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Transmission failures are extremely common. There’s not enough passenger room in the back seats, and the suspension is rough.

2014 Nissan Altima: Quick Overview

  • New features for the 2014 model year include an upgraded NissanConnect infotainment system, and better seat materials.
  • Reliability ratings are above average, according to J.D. Power. There are significantly fewer complaints than the 2013 model.
  • Two engines are available. One is a fuel-efficient four-cylinder, and the other is a powerful V6.
  • Fuel economy is good, tying for 3rd place out of 14 midsize cars with a combined rating of up to 31 miles per gallon.
  • Safety ratings are better than other sedans, getting a five-star rating in government crash tests. Also earning the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick award.
  • The 2014 Altima ranks near the bottom of the midsize car class based on owner reviews. Mechanical problems, and an uncomfortable cabin make us recommend other midsize sedans.

That it needs to be taken to the shop every so often for a check up.
I don't like the lights in my Nissan, they are too dim at night. But I do like how sturdy the car is!

My car performance, comfort and luxury is what I have wanted in a vehicle!
I love my car! Although it is a 4 cyl, it has great get up and go. I find that I really have to watch my speed because it does not feel like I am going as fast as I am. This car is a smooth ride and very quiet. The seats are very comfortable and lay all the way back so during my lunch time I have no problem taking a cat nap if I need it.

Best make of the 2014 Nissan Altima.
I really enjoy my 2014 Nissan Altima. It is got very comfortable seats, got a lot of room in the trunk. Drives very smooth. Some have backup cameras my does not but I know if I had the big screen in the middle with a camera I would start with my car. I would purchase another Nissan if I had to upgrade from my car.

2014 Nissan Altima: a comfortable, spacious, and reliable car!
The 2014 Nissan Altima is a wonderful car! It is my first car and I have had it for about 4 years now. Its reliable, comfortable, and sleek. Maintenance is not overly expensive if you keep up with it. It is super easy to clean inside and out. The interior is spacious and sturdy! My only grudge about the car is the headlights. There must be a problem with the lamps inside because I have changed the headlights but they still remains dim. Sometimes I have to drive with my brights on at night. But other than that, it is honestly a wonderful car.

It is a reliable car, made with the highest quality.
It's high quality with many great options, including navigation, bluetooth and a moon/sun roof. I had my last Nissan for over 10 years with relatively no problems so I expect that this Nissan will be the same. I also like the styling and comfort and lots of trunk space.

2014 Nissan Altima is the worst car I have ever owned!
The seat does not go high enough. I can barely see the hood. The interior lights are not bright enough. It is hard to even see the window button with all lights on. The headlights seem to point down. If the rear defrost is on the radio goes out. The Bluetooth has to be reconnected every time.

I do not like the color. It always has problems. The locks malfunction. The gas goes fast. I like that it is push to start.

Nissan Altima.. Probably not.
My Nissan Altima worked great for the first couple of years, until she started needing some work done on it. I experience trouble with the suspension the most. When I approached a red light, and then the light turns, my car sputters before changing gears to accelerate. My car requires mid grade fuel, which adds up quickly compared to unleaded. I have replaced all the tires at least twice in the 4 years I've had this car. Oil changes seem to be required even more often as time goes on, the light pops up before 5000 miles. My check engine light has been on for months and the shops I've taken it to say it's fine. My car is basically a boat it is so big, which is nice until it takes so much gas to get her going.

It is time for a Subaru 2019.
Unfortunately the car I purchased in 2014 it started out with a lot of problems which I had fixed but I am still not happy. I am purchasing another car next year. I am done with Nissan cars. My next auto will be a Subaru legacy. I know a few owners that are happy with this car.

There is a lot of space for passengers in the back.
The car keeps having issues. The headlights had to be replaced after 3 years. The AC needed repair after 3 years. The drivers side handle broke on the inside. I do like the seats they are very comfortable. There is a lot of space of the passengers. When the AC works it does get cold very quickly.

CVT
Nissan 2014 is the worst vehicle I have ever owned. Cvt failed completely at 109 thousand miles leaving me stranded 250 miles from home. The dealership I had to crawl into says it was because the car had high miles. Most transmissions don't even need servicing for the first time until 50 to 100. The CVT TECHNOLOGY SUCKS. When I got it back from the dealership after dropping 4k on a new transmission..the AC compressor failed...mind you..I live in texas...it failed in June. Was he'll on Earth. I bought the vehicle pre owned...it had noisy suspension from day one...the front strut has been clicking as of late and I just can't keep pouring money into this sh$! Dog of a vehicle. Buyer beware. Nissan will NEVER ADMITT to its SUBSTANDARD CVT TECHNOLOGY.

accountCircle Leona E

Yes the vehicle is very reliable. I travel back and forth constantly from Rhode to New York back and forth every weekend. The car is very good on gas and the fixing prices for parts are at an affordable rate.

accountCircle Sheena R

I bought my 2014 used almost 2 years ago. I put new tires and a package from ntb for unlimited alignments for 3 years. Mainly because in my experience with previous cars that package is more beneficial to me. Aside from that I do my routine oil changes and I had both front and rear brakes changed.

accountCircle Shannon J

The only problem I have had so far is on the hood release latch inside the cab of car when it was pulled it came off so got to fix that or you cannot get the hood open.

accountCircle kasaundra a

This car is very reliable runs really good and does not have any problems and what I love is if it does have any problems they are an easy and inexpensive fix.

By far the best car I’ve ever owned!
I bought my 2014 Nissan Altima S brand new! It gets terrific gas mileage! I found the sweet spot for gas mileage is to set the cruise control at 71 mph and I get 45 mpg! The only problem I’ve had is the dim headlights and Nissan put out a recall and replaced both headlight assemblies free of charge! My Altima has 200,000 miles now and runs perfectly! I’ve always kept It garaged and the oil changed as needed! It’s been a great car! My next car will be another Nissan Altima!

I have had issues with my radio cutting off randomly. I have had battery problems and hood latch problems. And my compressor has gone out twice in a year. Other than that nothing else has really happened but I haven't had it that long and it was used so things happen when you get a used vehicle.

The car has been very reliable. No major issues. Seat warmers, Bluetooth radio, and sport mode are great addition to the car. GPS could be better, as it does not give the most accurate or understandable directions. Radio has a glitch were sometimes the screen will go out for new reasons.

My 2014 Nissan Altima is very reliable. I am the first owner got it with 0 miles. It has 120,000 and running smooth, no transmission problems, no engine problems, no electrical or mechanical problems, no leaks. Steering wheel all good no problems. No check engine lights on at all. Is a daily driver 60 to 80 miles a day on average. Is great on gas 30 mpg on average if driving fast. And if driving with caution I get 34 - 36 mpg.

Just a good dependable car that is surprisingly roomy.
Generally, the car is very dependable. The gas mileage is a big step up from the last vehicle we had, which is a big plus. My only personal issue is the CVT-it works great, it just takes some getting used to for me, as I have driven manual vehicles most of my life. I am sure it is better for the engine, but not feeling the rpms through my foot the same way on a 5 or 6 speed is strange to me.

Well it tends to not start up right away when it gets too cold do you let your windows do not work when it rains you also have to somehow someway try and find a battery for your car so you can turn on the alarm if you cannot find a battery then the alarm will not go off or you cannot put the alarm on anyone when you do have the alarm on it does not go off for some reason sometimes.

Good car, mostly trouble free.
Bought secondhand from a car rental agency in 2016 for $11k and still under warranty with 37k miles. Engine went after 6 months due to a scored piston, but was completely covered by the dealership. No other problems, paint still great, interior is still in great shape with very little to no cosmetic issues which is a surprise - especially since we live in the tropics and it is parked outside and uncovered 24/7. Mileage is fine 22-26mpg on an island (where are you actually going to go?) and 95% of the miles are non-highway miles. Minus a star for no backup camera, but it was a rental car, so you get the basic trim and we are fine with that.

Nissan Altima headlight issue.
Passenger headlight has diminished luminosity. Having gone online to check this out, this seems to be a common issue with the Altima. The cost to repair/replace the headlight was quoted at around $1000 which is absurd. There is some speculation of a class action lawsuit over this issue as it is a significant safety issue because it is very difficult to see while driving at night. Gets quite good gas mileage.

2014 Nissan Altima review.
I have driven this vehicle for about 2 years. My Nissan Altima has 81,000 miles on it and I haven’t had any mechanical or electronic issues with the vehicle. I drove a jeep wrangler in the past and had tons of electronics go bad inside so I was worried I might have the same issues with this car since it has even more electronics inside. My only issue has been with the paint and it is starting to chip a tiny bit in a few places.

My Nissan Altima experience, a great ride.
My Nissan Altima has been extremely enjoyable to drive. It is a very smooth ride overall with fast pickup and great turning control. I have driven my vehicle for about 12000 miles and have had no problems with the vehicle. I have only taken it in for regular oil changes and fluid top offs. There has been one recall on the vehicle, but it was only to prevent the underside of the car from getting damaged from salt on the road in the winter. Besides those things, the vehicle is very comfortable, has lots of room at all seats, has quite a large trunk for a car, which to me is a good thing, and has great gas mileage.
accountCircle James H on April 26, 2021
It is the little things that count.
It runs well, but I have had some aggravating issues with the interior. It gets great gas mileage, and has a terrific sound system. My issues were a window that was stuck, a broken sun visor and air conditioning problems. It is a nice looking vehicle but Nissan went cheap on the interior.

Love the look of it from the interior and exterior. Also super good on gas.
I really love my car because it is dependable and overall a pretty car. The color is gray and the interior is black, a black cloth. I just wish it had a sunroof with a screen on the front where the radio is it to give it a more modern look. It is only broken down on me once but that was because something was leaking and was fixed the same week. Another time was when my battery was dead but that happens to every car. I tried to turn on my car but it wouldn't start and I was scared. Also, it is a very comfortable car. The seats are not too bulky or uncomfortable. Especially sitting in the backseat, I have never had a problem and it is easy to go to sleep.

My car is great on gas and drives very smooth.
I love my car. It is great on gas (I rarely have to fill it up), I haven't needed any major repairs, it drives smooth, and it is very comfortable. It does not have bad blind spots and I love how it has sensors on the mirrors to let you know if someone is in your blind spot. The backup camera is extremely helpful. The only issue I have is it will not change gears sometimes so it gets stuck and will not accelerate automatically and the overdrive symbol lights up on the dash. I have to then shift into neutral and then back into drive and it is fine. It does not happen often.

It's a very comfortable car to drive long distance in. It gets great gas mileage. It handles well in the snow. Great trunk space for a car that size. It has basic features like Bluetooth and XM radio which is a nice feature to have. It has a single disc CD drive which is still nice to have as some of today's cars are getting rid of CD drives. It has a lockable glove box and a two tiered center console, the car does have USB plugs.

It is really good on gas, has a smooth ride. The interior is roomy enough for 5 adults. I also have leather interior, so taking the dog does not leave a lot of dirt trapped in the upholstery. The trunk is very roomy. The added feature of hands free phone use is very convenient and easy to use. The only trouble I have had with it so far is the headlights. The lenses are glazed over, so it is hard to see at night. I am going to be replacing them.

I have had this car for six years and it is been the best car. Low maintenance and high gas mileage. With regular maintenance it is still running like new after 6 years. Drives great in big city traffic but roomy enough for long car rides. Largest trunk in any sedan I have tried.

I enjoy this vehicle. It is perfect size and is very easy to drive and operate.
The vehicle is quiet and drives smoothly. Push to start engine. Acceleration is fast and able to keep up with traffic. Love the interior and exterior design of the model. Spacious inside and trunk area for storage. Great for a road trip and getting around to where you need to go.

The best car ever. Especially if you are looking.
My car is extremely reliable. It gives me peace of mind knowing I do not have to worry about car problems. The electric system is a headache at times. Also the gas mileage is great I drive 40 miles one way a day. But I only fill up once a week. In closing in love this car.

Drove well, but problems outweigh that.
I've had mine for 7 years now - I've had all the same problems as "dissastified owner" below: PLUS the gas mileage has never been close to what they state for highway (gas mileage was the reason I got the 2.5 liter new). The reason I bought this vehicle in 2014 was that it drove very responsively when I rented the car for a vacation. In less than 2 years both sun visors failed with the springs inside malfunctioning ( failing to lock in place) it cost over $350 to replace them both. The driver door handle also cracked within 12 months. The black trim around the windows cracked off in multiple spots making it look like s**t. The car also runs noisy inside the cabin (as if there is no muffler). VERY DISAPPOINTED in Nissan quality. I am also considering transitioning to a Subaru - based on their failure to take responsibility for the gas mileage problem and the thousands it would cost to get it back up to "average" condition, for sure I won’t ever go back to Nissan.

2014 Nissan Altima- love my car.
I do not have any problems. The performance is amazing. I am a horrible driver and my car is still running with no problems. Pretty good with gas. My car is 6 years old and you wouldn't even know it. Perfect size trunk and fits everything that I need it to. I have no complaints regarding this car.

Key fob to Altima is not an easy replacement.
The key fob is a pain. Once antenna is broken it takes a while for it to start up. I literally have to hit the fob hard for it to start the car. And to replace it cost $400+ so it is not an easy fix. I wish it still had the option for regular key. Other than that, great car.

Blue four door Nissan, with silver rim tires and air conditioning works .
The Nissan Altima 2014 that I have is blue and it is a 4 door car and sometimes I do have problems with the engine I have had to get it jump started before and my car have broken down before it is comfortable the air conditioning works the heat works, the seat belts work, car is suitable for adults and children’s and even for animals as far as cats, dogs or whatever pets someone owns for them to enjoy a ride in the mobile vehicle.

Nissan is a great product.
My car gets great gas mileage. It is very reliable. The ride seems a little rough but not enough to keep me from loving it. I do not have a backup camera on my current car but I will have one on my next car. I would also like to have lumbar support on my next one.

Great vehicle, 10/10 highly recommend.
Great vehicle. Wonderful to drive. Did have transmission issues tho. Whole thing had to be replaced. Still a good vehicle to. Daily driver and great on long distances as well. Big back seat, and trunk. Great gas mileage. 10/10 would recommend. Seriously tho, but it.

My baby, my love, my favorite car ever.
My car does not have any performance issues. It could be slightly roomier but that could also be because I was used to my husbands car which is considered 'luxury' I wish I had a sunroof but other than that. I absolutely love my car. It's definitely my baby!

Gas mileage, the gas mileage is sufficient enough for what I do
It's fantastic, I enjoy driving it and have no complaints with it

Nissan! Great car with awesome features.
Nissans are excellent. Great gas mileage and very easy to drive. Will continue to buy Nissan as price is favorable for value. The newer Nissans have all the bells and whistles and so many to choose from. I recommend Nissan to anyone looking. Great cars!!

Quality car for reasonable price.
I have not had any problems with my Nissan Altima and this is my second one. The leather interior is very comfortable, the heated seats and steering wheel are great when it is cold here in the north in the winter. It gets excellent gas mileage on both the highway and in the city. It handles well in bad weather, and there are several safety features that really are a comfort just knowing I have them. The ride is smooth and quiet. It was relatively inexpensive for all the features that it has, compared to other cars of the same quality (I got the sl version). I get a lot of compliments on it and it is a very reliable car for a reasonable price.

Worst car I’ve ever owned.
I currently own a 2014 Nissan Altima 2.5. I purchased the car after owning 2 previous Altimas (2006 & 2010). The vehicle was purchased new. After owning the vehicle for 6 years it has lost its glazing in the trunk area. The glaze started bubbling and has now spread out the length of the trunk. Both sun visors are malfunctioning ( failing to lock in place) and permanently now in the down position. The driver door handle has also broken. The trunk rubber strip that’s pressed to open is falling apart. The car also runs Noisy inside the cabin. I can’t ever remember this many problems on any vehicle I have ever owned and I’m 66 years old. VERY DISAPPOINTED in Nissan quality. I am transitioning to Subaru and won’t ever go backup Nissan.
