2017 Jeep Wrangler Review: Long-Lasting But Expensive Off-Roader

Alex Showalter
Feb 25, 2022

2017 is a good year for the Wrangler, lasting over 300,000 miles with no widespread mechanical issues. At $31,116 – 45,674 prices are high, but the Jeep is in a class of its own.

likeFilled The Good
Off-road performance is fantastic, the engine has decent power and an extremely strong resale value.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Ownership costs are high, suspension is bouncy on roads and passenger room is limited.

2017 Jeep Wrangler: Key Points

  • Reliability ratings are average, with some transmission problems. Buyers should avoid 20122014 models, and go with 2015 or newer.
  • Power is good from the V6 engine for the SUV’s size.
  • Fuel economy is poor with a combined rating of up to 18 MPG.
  • Safety scores are bad, only getting 3 out of 5 stars in government crash tests.
  • We recommend the 2017 Wrangler. Although it isn’t comfortable, it’s the best choice for buyers looking for a raw off-road experience. The Wrangler ranks 4th out of 17 midsize SUVs based on owner reviews.

It's a car that you must consider looking into and purchasing!
This is the first Jeep Wrangler I own and I don't regret it not one bit. I love how spacious it is and it makes me feel more comfortable when I'm on the road. I will never go back to a smaller vehicle I feel unsafe in a small car. I have the Jeep Wrangler sport and as soon as I bought it I started buying accessories for it to customize it as my own. I bought some bar lights that add a nice touch to the vehicle. The features on this car is by far the best compared to any other car I have owned. You can completely customize the car and make it convertible which is the part I love most about it. You can take off the whole top and doors and take it out off roading. It's a fun car to have. Also a huge plus is that once you purchase a Jeep you feel apart of a family. You will notice fellow jeep wranglers that pass by you on the road always waving at you and it makes you feel special. I would not trade my Jeep Wrangler for any other car. It's definitely a car worth purchasing.

No top, no doors no problem.
My jeep wrangler has to be my favorite vehicle so far. It is spacious and comfortable. It is extremely versatile with customizable parts. The only complaint would be incorrect service lights go off, but that is an easy fix. The gas mileage is fantastic.

There is nothing like a jeep!
This 2017 jeep has been an amazingly reliable vehicle. From being able to help during a hurricane, to every day driving, I have been extremely impressed with the jeep. Of course, I added a winch on the front to make it more 'user friendly'. There is nothing like the jeep family.

Heavy duty and fun to drive.
Built up higher than my previous vehicles so a little harder to get in and out. Fun to drive. Looks cool. Easy to remove hard top for open air driving. Lots of room after rear seat removed. Great sound system. Good traction over rough terrain, but not always a smooth ride.

The all weather vehicle for dependability.
I love that my jeep is versatile. Fun and topless for summer weather and durable and dependable for the snowy winter. This is my second jeep. I would recommended this for all weather driving. The only downside is the back seat in small if you have taller passengers.
accountCircle Gabby S
Fun vehicle on spring, early fall.
I have a jeep, soft top, it can be a little loud on the highway, or when it rains... Gas tank it is a little small only holds like 13 gallons. The back seat does not stay locked when I have it folded. Other than that I love it, fun to ride on spring days.
accountCircle Lisa S
It is very reliable, durable and great in inclement weather.
I haven't experienced many problems, only one with the speaker system in the dashboard. It was not attached properly, but was promptly fixed by the service team.

Best purchase ever made!
One of the best purchases I have made! I have wanted a jeep since I could drive. It handles great. The interior is high quality. Gas mileage is about 22 mpg. Which is great for me. I have had this vehicle for 2.5 years now and have had no troubles. Love it!

It makes you feel safe. Plenty of space.
I like everything. There's nothing I don't like.

It is sporty, but is not a smooth ride.
While it is a reliable vehicle, it is not the most comfortable ride - especially the passenger . It has a short wheel base and does not ride smoothly - so if you want comfort, this is not the vehicle for you. We have had problems with the brakes, and the engine stopping, no fuel to the engine as well.

It will be in the shop a lot.
Leaky roof. Took it in 4 times. Waiting for the roof to leak again so I can do a buy back. Not as many features as lower priced cars. No cameras or CarPlay. Bluetooth connection is horrible.

2017 Wrangler wiring issues
Yesterday my Wrangler was towed in to the local dealership. The trip to the service department will be I believe my 11 th ( eleventh) trip to the service department for wiring issues in last year. Dashboard lights most all of them including radio, went off and on various times of the day. Stopped the car to get out a minute and it wouldn’t even turn over. Gonna request a new wiring harness this time or get me an attorney. I bought the factory warranty and hopefully no trouble using it. This has been a huge pain for me. I need vehicle for my job. Wonder if anyone else having wiring issues or what type issues you having.

2017 Jeep Wrangler- Leaking roof
In addition to my wiring issues I almost forgot I had a leaking roof on more than one occasion and a co worker has a Wrangler a 2016 and his roof leaked as well

Lifted jeep wrangler Sahara.
I personally found the jeep challenging to drive. I lifted mine and it is hard to drive on thruways and over potholes without feeling like you are going to lose control over the vehicle. I like the way the jeep does look however. It is very spacious inside and has a pretty large trunk. It takes some time to accelerate, but easy to keep it moving when it gets there.

Jeep wrangler honest reviews. Read before buying.
The jeep wrangler is a very expensive model of car for the performance. The interior is very simple and the cost of adding value to the car is very high. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. The only reason my husband has the car is for our 3 year old kid, so he is more comfortable in the backseat and so that he feels safe.
accountCircle Ryan H
Fun to drive and whimsical.
The look is nice, but it drives very uncomfortable. It also does not contain safety features for new drivers and teens. The speakers are far too bass boosted. The ability to take off the roof and doors is very unique, but not the most practical in a temperate weather area.

Top Critics Reviews

  • Consumer Reports finds the Wrangler to be rugged with an updated powertrain and average owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds gives the Wrangler a 4.3 out of 5 with good trail performance, but weak safety scores.
  • Kelley Blue Book gives the SUV a rating of 3.8 out of 5, enjoying the fun driving experience, but finding no luxury whatsoever.

What Problems Does the 2017 Jeep Wrangler Have?

Problems with the Wrangler include transmission failures, oil leaks, and some computer issues. The number of complaints is low on Wranglers from 2016 through 2021.

Transmission failures are a problem reported by some owners at around 55,000 miles. There are issues with the reverse gear, and other components in the transmission. Replacing the transmission costs about $3,500, depending on labor rates.

Leaking oil from the filter assembly is another complaint at 90,000 miles. There’s a design flaw with the way the filter attaches to the engine, causing leaks as it ages. Replacing the assembly costs about $250.

Computer problems are a rare issue in bad weather on Wranglers around 74,000 miles. An owner reported the wiper motor burnt out a relay in the computer, which cost over $1,000 to replace.

There are 5 recalls, average for a midsize SUV. Recalls include the front impact sensor, fuel tank control valve, brake switch, voltage regulator, and seat belt buckle. The most serious recall is the fuel tank crack, which can lead to leaks and a fire.

How Much is the 2017 Jeep Wrangler Worth?

Blue book prices range from $31,116 – 45,674 making the Wrangler expensive compared to the Highlander and Pathfinder. When new, the price range was $23,995 to $37,445. The Wrangler is a rare vehicle which has appreciated in value due to current market conditions.

How Long Will the 2017 Jeep Wrangler Last?

A properly cared for Wrangler should be able to last over 300,000 miles, which is 100,000 miles longer than a Grand Cherokee or Edge. Regular annual maintenance costs are expensive, according to Repair Pal at $774 per year.

As a Wrangler reaches over 100,000 miles, there are some services owners should prepare for including oil pressure sensors for $200, coolant temperature sensors costing $350, and radiator fans which cost $650.

Yes it is reliable. When I first pitched the jeep brand new, I began to have engine troubles. The jeep would idle down and stall out. After over a month of taking it into the shop multiple times it was finally found the jeep had a cracked cam rod.

accountCircle Joy H

It is reliable and I have not had any issues with mine. I drive mine to and from work every day with no issues.

accountCircle Monica B

Yes, very reliable. I always feel safe driving it and it is rare you run into any issues with the wrangler.

accountCircle Tricia S

I have had my jeep wrangler for 3 years without any issues. The only issue I have with it, is when I do not have heavy stuff in my jeep it is easy for the wind to blow it a little.

accountCircle Julia C

No problems at all, very reliable. But also only two years old so no issues yet. Again slippery in snow which I do not like.

accountCircle Caitlin S

The only issue I have had in the past few years has been with the radio consul but the dealership fixed it pretty fast. Other than that the car is very reliable.

accountCircle Jessica G

My jeep is very reliable. I have not had any problems thus far with it. The only 'problem' with it is that it does not come with a good sound system/speakers and the mpg is terrible!

accountCircle Brandy R

I have not had any problems w/ my jeep. We did buy it single owner used but it was very well maintained, and I am very particular about its upkeep and routine maintenance myself.

What Color Options are Available?

How Big is the Wrangler?

The Wrangler is classified as a midsize SUV, but is smaller than other choices including the Pilot and Highlander. There are 2-door and 4-door-models available, but neither offer much passenger room in the backseats.

Cargo space is limited with only 12.8 cubic feet of room in the 2-door, and 31.5 cubic feet in the 4-door.

How Does the 2017 Jeep Wrangler Compare to Other SUVs?

The highest-rated midsize SUV from 2017 is the more expensive Toyota 4Runner. The 4Runner offers more passenger room, but the Wrangler is better off-road. The decision comes down to your goals, the 4Runner is a better daily driver, but the Wrangler is more fun off-road.

Another competitor is the more affordable Jeep Grand Cherokee. Technology is better in the Grand Cherokee, but the Wrangler wins out when you hit the trails. If  you want a daily driver go with a Grand Cherokee, otherwise a Wrangler is more exciting.

Final Verdict: Is the 2017 Jeep Wrangler a Good SUV?

Yes, there are a lot of positive owner reviews on the Wrangler mentioning easy-to-use technology, a fun driving experience, and no widespread issues.

The Wrangler exists in a class of its own with an extreme focus on off-road performance. If you want a daily driver, the Wrangler is not the best SUV. However, if you’re looking to go on adventures, then the 2016 through 2021 Wranglers are great choices.

Reliable and fun
I bought my 2017 JKU brand new. It has just shy of 70,000 miles on it. I’ve had no problems with it at all until last week when I needed to replace the tie rod, track bar, and drag links. That’s on me though for doing too much of what it’s designed for. I always joke with people that I want to be buried in it, but seriously though. I do plan on driving this thing until the wheels fall off. Then I’ll pay to put it back together and keep on driving it.

Worth every penny but gas mileage could be better.
I have always wanted a jeep. Getting a newer one was one of the best decisions I have made. Drives a lot smoother even lifted. The gas mileage on a jeep is not the greatest but if it is something you love, then who cares! I highly recommend getting one if you are an outdoorsman. Not something to us as a daily unless I s for a short distance.

No mechanical problems. The keep rides well and is reliable. You can take the top off easily and it is quiet and safe. I love the color but the radio is outdated. It is lifted and is purple. The jeep does well on gas and gets about 20 miles to the gallon.

I never thought I would love the jeep wrangler Smoky Mountain as much as I do but its my favorite vehicle! I have both a hard and soft top for it. I am going to lift it 3' and put 35' tires on it. So many cool accessories are available for jeeps! I can't wait to make it even better!

Jeep wrangler: adventure awaits.
I love the versatility of the jeep wrangler. Whether you are traveling the dirt roads of New England or navigating the concrete jungle. It is reliable, rugged, and fun to drive. The four door trim makes it fun for the whole family. Nothing beats a top down and doors off coastal cruise in the heat of the summer. The four wheel drive capabilities also make winter a safe experience.

2017 jeep wrangler sport good vs bad.
The only problem with my vehicle is that is slow. Great performance very reliable and comfortable. The features of being able to take my doors off and also take my top off make it great for spring, summer and fall time of the year. I can also do a lot changes to my jeep by changing tires door lights and a lot of accessories.

I have a white jeep wrangler. You can remove the doors and the top.
I recently purchased this car as my first car. Previously, I was driving a 2013 jeep wrangler. I chose this car because wranglers last a very long time. It is a very convenient car as a young college student and will have a high trade in value. My previous jeep was not that comfortable but the newer jeep is much more comfortable. It is a very reliable car because of the high trade in value of them.

It is lifted running 35s perfectly looking at getting a supercharger next.
Great performance, extremely reliable except on gas. Cloth seats are the best for wranglers because it makes it easier to not see the stains from mud and dirt. It is a pretty basic wrangler but 4 wheel drive is great and had amazing torque for the 3.6 liter.

Smooth ride great turning radius great for on and off-road driving. The off-road tires are a little noisy while driving on highways. Part of the fun with a jeep are the options to remove doors and roof panels to really let the wind in your hair. Great for your next adventure.

Rudimentary summary of my feelings on the jeep wrangler.
Not an optimal vehicle for my use. Jeep wrangler gets poor gas mileage and does not drive smoothly on pavement. The default speaker system is poor and does not produce a full body of sound. Turning is very sensitive, not a strong engine, and feels top heavy, feeble, and rackety in strong winds.

Jeep is the best brand out there. I love my car more than anything in the world. Jeep is the most versatile company in the world as the brand can support offroading and daily driving. Jeep also has the most upgrades available for every option. It is the best car hands down. I think that anyone who does not have a jeep needs to get one as soon as possible. They are cheap cars and are the most valuable for their price. I love the jeep over my other cars. If you are considering a car then you need to get a jeep.

Jeep wrangler Sahara unlimited pros and cons.
I love my car, the best part is being able to take the roof off on nice days. There are a few downfalls thought. The miles per gallon are awful. I usually get 13 mpg and have to fill my tank weekly and it is pricey. Another downfall is it is loud on highways because the roof comes off. It also takes a long time to heat up or cool down since it lacks insulation. If you can get past that it is an awesome car. My favorite part is how you can make it your own, you can customize every aspect of it.

The jeep is definitely a fun car to drive but it is not a luxury vehicle.
Drives like a truck - very bouncy. Call while I expected the vehicle to not be a very smooth ride, it rides very much like a mail truck. This is especially helpful for off roading but not for everyday driving. The rear wheel drive is also sometimes an issue. It is not good in inclement weather unless you put it into four-wheel-drive.

Convertible top. Easy to remove and replace hard top.
So reliable. I have had my car for just over two years, and I could not be more happy with my purchase. My intention was to make this a long term / forever car. The comfort inside the vehicle is unmatched. A major concern people have is the gas consumption, as a commuter I am surprised with how it consumes slowly on the highway. Now city miles will consume a lot of gas. All in all, I feel like you know exactly what you are getting when you purchase a wrangler.

Interesting detail is there are little hidden logos or pictures in or on the car.
Seats are very comfortable and good for long road trips. It has decent pick up and is easy to drive. It is an amazing car for warmer weather, being able to take the top off and go off roading! Good for areas with lots of flooding because it is high up on the ground.

It is exactly what you think. A big fun toy!
The wrangler is like a big lego. You can customize parts. Take off the top of the doors. Install anything yourself with ease and it is amazing for outdoor adventures! Perfect for a single person who’s active and on the go or a family who enjoys camping and recreation.

Jeeps - rugged yet comfortable and stylish.
I love my Jeep. It is a rugged yet comfortable well performing vehicle that is different than most vehicles out there. I also love the square shape where most vehicles are crossovers. It is great to be able to remove the tops when it is nice out and they are very easy to customize to make each Jeep unique and your own.

My jeep is primarily stock but highlight is the 4 wheel capability.
I really love my jeep. I love the off road durability as well as the handle and power that I get out of the car. The interior s comfy and spacious and has plenty of trunk room for all of my gear, and spacious enough to hold a full third row. I also love the ability to make this car my own. To take off the doors or the roof, or any combination is a unique and amazing feature that should be taken into consideration if you want to have your own vehicle.

Jeep wrangler is a good car, and very cool.
Spend a lot of gas, have not too much space. Is comfortable, and beautiful, you can convert your car and add a lot of pieces. Is an adventure car, trending, have a lot of power, is able to go everywhere. Is a beautiful model always you’ll feel happy inside.

My spare stays on the back.
I got my jeep when I was fifteen, October 31, 2017, the day of Halloween. Up to this point (December 16, 2020) I have only ever had one problem with this jeep and it was when me and my friends went to off the wall in canton. My battery died but luckily one of my good friends was with us and able to jumpstart it and I got a new battery the next day. It is very reliable and I love driving it. The features are great but I wish the radio was more technologically advanced because right now it reminds me of one that would be in an earlier model. Overall it is a great car and a great purchase.

Jeep wrangler 2017, basic model.
Have had no major issues when it comes to reliability. Car is very basic (crank windows, no power locks) so there is not much that can go wrong on a technical level. Decent mileage, looks good. Post-factory add-ons enhance the look and performance a lot, not nearly as expensive as factory-made parts.

Comfortable for a family yet sporty.
I love my Jeep wrangler! It is sporty yet fits my family comfortably. To take the top down you need at least two people so I wish there was a button to press to make that easier but overall I would definitely keep buying wranglers. I have the four door so I can fit the kids and groceries in the back with no problem!

The most obvious one being off-road performance.
The jeep wrangler was the 2017. Of the year, so it has to be pretty good to beat out all the competition. As with everything though, whether the jeep wrangler will be a good car for you is subjective and dependent on your needs. Those who want a comfortable vehicle to drive to work every day might be disappointed with the wrangler. Although the newer models certainly have more creature comforts, they still lack the smooth handling of other vehicles built just for on-road use.

My jeep wrangler runs amazing and has great quality everything.
My vehicle performs great. There is some shaking and bumping around but overall it runs really smooth and is fun to ride in. Taking the doors and top off adds to some fun rides around town or out in the country. Soft and hard tops are available, however I prefer hard top.
