2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Review: Smaller Than the Earlier Models, But Otherwise an Improvement

Gilbert Smith
Feb 22, 2023

The 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee is everything you expect of a Jeep. It’s great at off-roading, and bad at everything else. Powerful and fun to drive, but inefficient, prone to early breakdown and expensive repairs, and rough on the posterior. But, only Jeep makes a Jeep.

Front angle medium view.
likeFilled The Good
It’s a Jeep. It’s fun to drive off-road and it can crawl its way over almost any terrain. With typical listing prices in the $5,000 range, it’s priced to move.
dislikeFilled The Bad
It’s a Jeep. It’s expensive to repair, cumbersome in the city, and chugs fuel like it’s going out of style. The 2005 is a little smaller than the 2004 model.

Is the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee a Good Used Car?

  • Overall Rating 8/10 – It’s an 8/10 if you’re making it your weekend vehicle. If you’re going to use it as a daily driver, it’s a 5/10.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 7/10 – Jeeps have never been the most comfortable vehicles to drive but they’re at least roomy. Except for this one, which comes in a few cubic feet short of the 2004 model, and offers limited headroom for taller drivers.
  • Reliability 6/10 – You’re probably only going to get around 50,000 miles out of a used Grand Cherokee, and you’re going to be paying for a lot of little repairs along the way.
  • Safety 7/10 – Standard safety features like power anti-lock brakes and occupant sensing airbags are generous for 2005, even if they’re hardly cutting edge by modern standards.
  • Gas Mileage 6/10 – With the most efficient models getting just 17/22 miles to the gallon, city/highway, it’s a mid-size SUV that feels like a full-size at the pump.
  • Value 6/10 – Sticker prices are fair, but exorbitant maintenance and refueling costs will make up the savings faster than you can say “what is it THIS time?”

It drives well in the snow.
I really enjoy how i can drive this car well in snow. That was the main reason i purchased this jeep. I dislike the gas usage.

It's good reliable and great in winter weather.
No problems very reliable. Got it 3 yrs. Ago and have had no problems. Had transmission flushed and new struts and shocks about 4 months ago everything is amazingly awesome with my Jeep.

It features safe technology that helps. As far as it, has in dash broad help that tells you when a tire is low and when how many miles till you need gas. And other problems that can occur with it.
I like the ability to change radio setting or channels from steering wheel. I like the space in the vehicle and the technology it has. I dislike the leather seats on a hot day.

Four wheel drive vehicle.
I really like owning a Jeep. We have owned a few. I like having a four wheel drive vehicle. The only problem with this one is that it is an automatic four wheel drive and I do not feel I have as much control with it as I did with previous vehicles where I had the option of putting it in four wheel.

Jeeps are awesome vehicles, roomy powerful and stylish
I love the engine size and power it has. It's roomy interior is also "rugged " enough for my boys. The back hatch is very roomy also and has potential to haul a load or even pull a trailer.

My Jeep has been great. It is a smooth ride, handles great in the snow and heavy rains. I have never had an mechanical issues with my vehicle in the 6 years I've owned it. Not great on gas however.

The Amazing Go-Anywhere, Survive Anything Vehicle.
The beast has four-wheel drive, power steering, a V-eight, and has made 2 long distance trips in the two years we've owned it. We also have heated seats, which for an arthritis sufferer like me is marvelous on cold days. We bought it used, and it has been a mainstay of our lives. It holds my electric mobility device and a month's worth of groceries easily, can go through the deepest snow without getting stuck, and is reasonably showy (for those who like such things.) Having bought it used, we found it had been neglected, yet we were able to continue driving it while making the necessary repairs. On the latest trip home from a long-distance trip, one of the two drive shafts developed a problem, yet we were able to get home safely and drove it about a week before the replacement part came in and we were able to get it fixed. It drives easily and reliably. It's a good vehicle.

It sucks. My car does not get good gas mileage.
I like my car, but it is followed by a Honda pilot. I do have leather seats & a sunroof, but it is no pilot. It rides really rough. It also does not have an AUX cord. My car is reliable. I can for sure trust that I will have a working vehicle when I go to go somewhere.

If it is not leather seats, be warned as the cloth seats are prone to easily stain...even just from a drip of water.
I like the overall style. I hate it that the seats stain just from a drop of water and I've been told by the dealer this is a flaw that many have complained about. I also dislike the fact that the 4x4 system has excessive play in the transfer case. I will never buy another Jeep or Chrysler product again.

Does not ride well in the back seat.
It is getting old, needs some repairs. Do not like the ride. Seems like it is big but has some wasted space. Like the size.

If the electrical system starts to fail in any way, it affects all kinds of things in the car and it's very difficult and expensive to fix it completely.
It drives okay and is very comfortable. Unfortunately, it has constant minor mechanical and electrical problems that are difficult to diagnose and would be expensive to fully repair.

It's fun to drive, its a pain in the pocket. All in all not worth it
Within the first year of driving it, the A/C compressor blew. It's a gas guzzler, and the glass they use for the windshields are very weak. My car had two windshield replacements. Also, if you think you're safe in a jeep, think again. Someone crashed into me and my car crumpled like a tin can.

My amazing adventure with jeep,
Good mileage, spacious inside, easy to ride, I have had this type of vehicle since 2000 and it has been a pleasure to drive this car, very minimum maintenance and repairs, I would recommend this vehicle to anyone. I have bought two cars like this in the past 5 years, and have not had any problems. I very satisfied with this model.
accountCircle Ashley b
It burns oil somewhere but I have yet to determine the where.
I dislike that the air vent/flow actuators keep failing, repeatedly, as well as the sensors for seat belt and airbag on my passenger seat. I do not like the drivetrain but I do think it's a reasonably comfortable ride.

Seats are comfortable, large amount of storage space in back. Had to have rear axle rebuilt twice, first time at 80,000 miles right after the warranty was up and the second time at 120,000.

What Do Critics Say About the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

Consumer Reports found the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee to be an improvement over earlier models, but still underwhelming, with a V6 engine that doesn’t quite deliver the horsepower you expect at such a low MPG, a wide turning radius, and a low ceiling.

Kelley Blue Book users give the 2005 Grand Cherokee an 88% recommendation. They cite the all-wheel performance as the main attraction, and high cost of ownership as the biggest shortcoming, with loads of mechanical and electrical problems to fix on a near monthly basis.

Edmunds liked the strong engine choices, the best-in-class offroad performance, and the generous standard safety features. They didn’t like the hard plastic interior, and they found the cargo space coming up short.

What Common Problems Does the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Have?

The 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee’s long list of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration complaints is led electrical issues making up 919 of 2,039 total. The main problem here is ignition failure, despite a recall in 2014 to address the SUV shutting down if you bump the key with your knee.

Structural issues make up 405 of the Grand Cherokee’s complaints, with drivers reporting sunroof leaks, broken door handles, busted AC blend doors, and loads of cracks and tears in the interior. In short, the overall build quality of the interior is poor, and it hasn’t stood the test of time.

There are quite a few powertrain and engine complaints on file, at 252 and 130, respectively. One of hte biggest problems being reported sees the vehicle overheating. This is usually linked to a 2005 recall for water entering the transmission, purging the transmission fluid and potentially starting an engine fire.

The 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee has just 5 recalls on file with the NHTSA, which isn’t a lot for a vehicle released roughly twenty years ago. But, considering that there are more than 2,000 user complaints on file, maybe a few more recalls are in order.

How Long Will the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Last?

Drivers have reported total engine and powertrain failure with mileage as low as 130,000. But if you’re fastidious about maintaining your vehicle, and if you can get the recalls taken care of before the overheating problems set in, you should expect a minimum mileage of 200,000.

RepairPal estimate an annual maintenance cost of around $666, with new diesel injection pumps being the most expensive common fix starting at around $946.

accountCircle Mike W

It is reliable. I have had no major problems with my jeep. Just general maintenance that you have with any vehicle.

accountCircle Nikki C

No it does not have any problems and yes it is very reliable. I highly recommend buying one! It has 4 wheel drive as well.

accountCircle Charles P

This car is very reliable, it has never failed to crank and has never left me stranded. The highway mileage is within 1 mpg of what it is rated.

accountCircle Christy D

It is very reliable. I replaced maintenance parts as recommended and have had no surprises due to vehicle malfunction in 15 years.

accountCircle N V

I never have any problems and it is very reliable I have kept up on the fluids and the battery and tire changes so it has been in good condition since day one.

accountCircle Mackayla W

The drivers side window stopped working, so it would never roll down until I got it fixed. Also, the steering wheel shakes a bit when I drive over 40 mph.

accountCircle Crystal D

It's been very reliable so far. I've kept the oil changed and tires changed and just routine maintenance. Only thing wrong is the air has trouble staying on high.

accountCircle Marion H

Yes it is very reliable and no we haven't had any problems outside of normal wear and tear. Our truck is in good condition and still looks it.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology onboard the 2005 Grand Cherokee is pretty basic. You’ve got a CD player in the base Laredo model and a 6-disc changer and MP3 player in the high-end Limited. Remember, iPhones were still a few years off at this point, so phone connectivity wasn’t an option yet.

Safety features are dated, but generous enough for a 2005 SUV. You’ve got power anti-lock brakes and multistage airbags with occupant sensing as standard features. Nothing too cutting-edge, but none of these features were a guarantee in 2005.

Is the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee a Good Value?

The 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a decent value if you’re looking at the sticker price. The Laredo typically lists at around $4,742 with under 160,000 miles on the odometer, and a Limited lists for around $5,243. These are roughly median prices for a 2005 mid-size SUV.

Cost of ownership is where it starts to get pricey. You’re going to be spending around six, seven hundred dollars a year in routine maintenance, and you’ll be lucky if you get 20 miles to the gallon. And, the 2005 Grand Cherokee usually breaks down before 250,000 miles.

What are the Different Models of the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

The 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee is offered in just two trims, being the base Laredo and the high-end Limited.

With the entry-level Laredo you’re getting:

  • Cloth seating 8-way power driver seat
  • Power windows and door locks
  • CD changer with 6 speakers
  • Manual air conditioning
  • Remote keyless entry

The top-of-the-line Limited adds:

  • Leather seating
  • Fog lights
  • Heated mirrors
  • Dual zone automatic air conditioning
  • Leather wrapped steering wheel
  • MP3 player with 6 Boston Acoustics speakers
car
Laredo
210-230 HP 18-18 MPG
car
Limited
230-325 HP 17-17 MPG

What Engines Come In the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

  • The Laredo model is packed with a 3.7L Power Tech V6 engine delivering 230 horsepower and 290 lb.-ft. of torque, averaging 17/22 miles to the gallon, city/highway. The engine is paired to a 5-speed automatic transmission, and configured in rear/four wheel drive. Towing capacity maxes out at 3,500 pounds.
  • In the Limited edition you’ll find a 4.7L V8 delivering 325 horsepower and 370 lb.-ft. of torque at an average MPG of 15/20. This is paired to a 5-speed automatic, configured in rear/all wheel drive, and can tow up to 6,500 pounds.

What Colors Does the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Come In?

How Comfortable Is the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

Interior space in the 2005 Grand Cherokee is decent. You’ve got 60 inches of rear hip room and 40 inches of front head room, which is enough to call it a mid-size SUV, but some drivers find the seating a bit tight.

And then you’ve got the off-road suspension. It works wonders when you’re crawling over rocks, sand, mud, and tree stumps, but it’s a bit stiff for daily driving. On the upside, it’s held up well over the years, with just 22 NHTSA complaints on file for the shocks and struts.

How Much Storage Space Does the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Have?

The 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee offers adequate cargo space. You’ve got 34.53 cubic feet in the back, or 67.4 cubic feet with the seats down. This is a few cubes short of the 2004 model, and weighs in on the smaller end of mid-size SUVs for this model year.

You’ll have enough space for the cooler, the charcoal grill, and whatever camping and fishing equipment you’re bringing for a weekend excursion, but you’re going to need to borrow a truck if you plan on moving any furniture.

Centered wide dash shot

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee was the first model year in the 3rd Generation, or the WK Grand Cherokee, retired for the WK2 with the 2011 model year..

2002: Jeep launched the Overland model in 2002, with leather seating, wood trim setting, and premium audio features.

2003: GPS navigation was added for 2003.

2004: No major changes for 2004, but the SUV did get some new fascias and neat Trail Rated 4×4 badges on the four wheel drive models.

2005: Rather than a total overhaul, the 3rd Gen Grand Cherokee was given a subtle redesign with sleeker edges, active suspension, electronic differentials, and smaller body dimensions overall.

2006: The 425 horsepower SRT8 model was introduced for 2006, boasting a massive 6.1L V8 engine.

2007: Diesel engines and flex-fuel V8s made their debut in 2007.

How Does the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Compare to the Competition?

Jeeps are sorta their own thing. They’re terrible daily-drivers because they’re not trying to be anything but adventure vehicles. So you’re not going to find a better off-roader, but there are more versatile vehicles that are just as capable on the dirt as they are on the tarmac.

The 2005 Toyota 4Runner is a great alternative if you want to do a lot of off-roading, but with a more comfortable ride and better fuel economy than you get with a Grand Cherokee. It typically lists for as much as twice the cost of a Grand Cherokee, but it’s cheaper to refuel and maintain, and it’ll last longer.

A 2005 Ford Explorer is limited to light off-roading, but can be had for under three grand and has proven to be arguably the most reliable American SUV from this era.

There’s really no runner-up to a Jeep. If you’re after a Jeep, you’re after a Jeep. But, it’s not the only way to go off-road.

Reliability
Would I recommend a GrandGherokee? Well, my first 'rokee was a 76 S model, then a 94 LTD, 95 LTD, 98 LTD, and now a 2005 LTD Hemi. I also have a 2006 custom Wrangler built up for off-roading. Needless to say, my wife "owns" my GC... My review is more of a correction of misconceptions in other peoples reviews, being an "old hand" at owning AND working on these workhorses in tuxedos. Yes the 8 cylinder engine versions do drink more than the 6's do there is a reason for that. They put out more torque, essentially for heavier towing than the 6 cylinders. Increasing the octane of the fuel does help, despite what the so-called eperts claim. I've spent years and hundreds of thousands of miles proving this, not only in Grand Cherokees but in High-Performance Street Rods as well. In the Hemi, the owner manual specifies midgrade (silver) gasoline. Use regular and MPG drops by 3 to 4 miles per gallon (driving by tac). The next issue is the shimmy at highway speeds. This is commonly called "the death wobble" and it happens on all 4wd vehicles that do NOT have independent front suspensions. Jeeps that are susceptible to this are those that are the ones built for brute strength. It is a symptom of a bad front end alignment. Nothing more. Take care of it before it messes up your front tires that's it for that shimmy. The next point is leaking sun roofs. Go to your local home improvement store and buy a generic roll of star-shaped nylon weed wacker replacement line. Open your sun roof all the way and clean out the gutter all around the frame in the roof. While cleaning it you will find 4 holes meant to drain water out of the gutter. Check the weed wacker string to make sure it fits into these holes without knocking the drain hose off the other side if its too big exchange it (I've found the "standard size" to work fine). Cut an 8 foot piece off the roll and feed this down the drain hole, turning it all the way around as you"snake" out this drain. IF you see the end of it under the car by all means, pull it through! If not, push a fresh piece (uncut) through until it hits the ground, and then cut it about 2 ft above the roof. The reason for 2 pieces is the short piece can be cut to a sharpened if needed if the drain becomes hard-packed and even turned by a rechargeable drill if you need to.( I only had to do this once) On to the heated seats. First, check the power connector under the seat, (google it's location) and check with a METER, (put the probe tips into the back of the connector first on the seat side and a second time on the switch side) to see if it is getting voltage when you turn the switch for it on. If you are reading power (12V) on both sides of the connector the warming element in the seat is broken and is extremely difficult to replace. Ive seen people buy heated seat pads, cut the cales for them off, and then cut the seat side of the connector for the seat heater off and wire that to the seat pad and plug that back in under the seat, running it under the seat adjuster rail so they don't cut the wire with the electric seat. This puts the control and timer right on the dashboard next to the other control. These are the issues Ive dealt with and how I fixed them and how I helped others.I'm 62 years old and enjoy working on cars, Ive worked on my Grand Cherokees LESS than any other vehicles have ever owned, with the exception of doing custom sound and communications installations (I'm a ham radio operator) I cant recommend a Grand Cherokee enough to anyone Especially living on the shore of Lake Michigan!

It is best when I drive highway miles.

The car is great! Very comfortable, fun to drive and it does very well in the snow. It is extremely reliable. The front seats have warmers, the A/C works a little to well, for me anyway. The windows have a slight tint which keeps the interior from fading. The rear seats fold down for loading bigger items, there is also a roof rack. This model has a towing system, I've only towed once but it was a breeze. There is traction control which is great for wet roads. And also, a back up alert system (this is before backup cameras). The car came with a stock stereo system and the sound is great! There is also a phone answering device, this is pre-Bluetooth but it works well and informs when you have an incoming call.

Comfortable and reliable vehicle
It's very comfortable to drive. It has a dim setting on the rearview mirror to enhance visibility from the headlights on the car behind you. It has heated side view mirrors. The water pump and belt did need to be replaced, which is apparently common. Another common problem is that the interior door handles and sunglasses holder are not very sturdy, they cracked and broke pretty easily after a few years. I wish it had an auxiliary port for the radio, but the setup of the console is nice. Gas mileage isn't great.

This is a good midsize SUV for general purposes. I have never tried any real off reading with it, but it handles just fine in everyday use. The back seats fold down and the front seats recline all the way back, so it would be great for camping or a road trip. It does have rather low gas mileage, being a V8, though. The windshield is also somewhat small and the space between the windshield and the front side windows is a bit thick, making a blindspot that is larger than I'd like. It takes some getting used to, but overall I have no other complaints.

It has lasted for several years and is a good all around family suv.
I like the 4wd but wish I had a newer model with latest tech..

That even though it is big it is very practical. Really comfortable
I love the space . It is hard to get stuck on loose dirt . The only thing i dislike is the interior color gets d***y right away.

It's a great family car and is very sturdy.
I like how spacious my Jeep is. I also like how sturdy it is. On the other hand, I wish it got better gas mileage and didn't use as much oil.

It's a Jeep so its reliable and will last for a while.
Its decent I am not a huge fan of the all wheel drive system I like having an actual 4 by 4 system I feel it works better for hazardous conditions such as 2 feet of snow on the ground it has a nice interior it's comfy. Lots of room in the cargo area. Powerful engine the mpg is ok but its an SUV from the early 2000s what do you expect.

Jeep-2005 grand Cherokee or things gone bad.
We had a problem with our 2005 Jeep that cost $2000 to repair. The whole underside needed repair. The mechanic said it wasn't safe to be on the road. We have also recently replaced the battery and had a new starter put in. The sun roof also had to be fixed for a leak. It seems like it is starting to fall apart.

Jeep Grand Cherokee Lacks in Headspace
I love the amount of storage space I have, but the ceiling of the car is very low, so if I have my hair up on top of my head it will hit the ceiling even though I am not a tall person. Other than the lack of headspace, the car is very comfortable. I haven't had many issues with the vehicle since I've owned it, but I have had several issues with the battery, and every time I get it checked out, I hear similar responses from the mechanic that Jeeps often have battery issues and need attention for that specific issue. I wish it had better gas mileage as well.

Great handling, plenty of room for stuff, good V8 power, but still mostly economical.
Jeep makes it difficult to work on, too many electronic systems that could be handled much more reliably with mechanical systems... Transfer cases, etc. I do love it's off road capability, especially with a simple lift system installed.

It's good reliable and great in winter weather.
No problems very reliable. Got it 3 yrs. Ago and have had no problems. Had transmission flushed and new struts and shocks about 4 months ago everything is amazingly awesome with my Jeep.

I love being above other vehicles. How it handles in snow. And the heated leather seats.
Reliable in any weather, 4x4 wheel drive and smooth ride.

Decent Vehicle For everyday life
At 170,000 miles its a still running though it has had some sort of problem every year. Overall Jeeps run smoothly and easily as an SUV can run. I have a Semi edition so gas is not that great and on top of that a V8 engine. I truthfully would like to buy another car soon but paying for school is coming first.

My year model is suppose to have a recall on computer software causing it to throw check engine light
Overall i love my vehicle it rides smooth and has a really good look to it.i don't like the gas mileage it gets at all.i don't really have any complaints

Stick with the 2004 or earlier, or a newer model. The 2005 is the weakest of the Grand Cherokees overall.
The 2005 is not as good in any way as the 2004 model that I owned before. Every detail of the vehicle was changed, but not for the better. But spacious and convenient mode of transportation. Transmission is no good.

It might be an oldie, but it is a goodie.
For a vehicle that is 14 years old, my jeep runs quite well. It gets pretty decent gas mileage-I'd say about 20-25 mpg. The back seat folds down in sections, so it is good for hauling stuff and still being able to take passengers. It does have some performance issues when it gets hot out. It idles very roughly, and is absolutely unable to run smoothly on speedway gasoline. My fiance does pretty much all maintenance work himself, and finds it relatively easy to do so. It does seem to go through spark plug replacements a little faster than one would hope. It is seen a lot of miles, and overall is a very comfortable long-haul vehicle.

Grand Cherokee limited 5.7l.
I love all the features like the sunroof, navigation and heated seats. It is a smooth ride with no real issues for the mileage. The hemi has great power and is fun to drive.

It is a reliable vehicle, it I were to recommend a vehicle to a friend, I would recommend to get a jeep.
I like that it is reliable. I like that it helps me get to my destination. I also like that it helps me save gas.
accountCircle Tia J on August 24, 2020
It is dependable and has lots of room.
I live in Colorado where sometimes the roads are really bad from the snow so this car has great traction and helps me get through the snow very easily. I also like that it has really great bass in the sound system. One thing I do not like is the leather seats.

This is a fun car for a young adult and is spacious enough to pack all your things in for frequent movers. I don't think it would make a great family vehicle.
I like how spacious my Jeep is. It's a very fun vehicle to drive, and it makes me feel adventurous. I wish the gas mileage were better. It would be nice if it weren't so top-heavy.

Great all around family vehicle
Great vehicle. Poor gas mileage. 5.7 liter engine with plenty of power. Very comfortable with lots of great features
accountCircle Antonio C on August 12, 2020
It is nice apparently it is kind of fast and sounds awesome.
It is kind of fast, to be honest I expected more but then again it is a 2005 model. A lot of people like it but it lacks space and maneuvering is pretty bad. Power is good but expected more from the hemi engine, faster. And I give it a 7. 3. But overall it is a nice. Vehicle it is a little sensitive but tough.

2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Best car I have owned
Performance is really great. Some problems I have noticed is something it has a hard time getting up to speed. Comfort if you are bigger you probably won't be comfortable with the seat belt because it only goes so far. So if you are bigger it is really tight on you

Reliable and comfortable riding
I like the all wheel drive and dislike the gas mileage and no complaints
