2019 Jeep Cherokee Review: Unreliable SUV With High Ownership Costs As It Ages

Alex Showalter
Dec 20, 2022

The 2019 Jeep Cherokee only lasts around 150,000 miles with some serious engine and transmission problems reported. At $17,325 to $26,375, it’s too expensive for an SUV which is very expensive to keep running out of warranty.

likeFilled The Good
The passenger room is good for its size, the Trailhawk model is great off-road and the Uconnect stereo system offers excellent software.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The suspension is rough on the roads, there are transmission problems and the cabin is very noisy.

Is the 2019 Jeep Cherokee a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 6/10 – 2019 is a bad year for the Jeep Cherokee since there are mechanical problems showing up as they age, giving it a low overall score. Owner reviews complain about steering issues, transmission problems, and road noise.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 7/10 – Interior materials are okay for an SUV in its price range, the seats are supportive on long drives, although there’s not much cargo space.
  • Reliability 5/10 – There are some transmission problems found on the 2019 Cherokee. Avoid models from 20142016, along with 2019. While 20172018 & 20202021 are better choices.
  • Performance 7/10 – Performance is okay from the standard 4-cylinder engine while the V6 or turbocharged motors are reasonably quick.
  • Safety 7/10 – The 2019 Cherokee earns 4 out of 5 stars in government crash tests. There’s a standard rearview camera. Optional upgrades include parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, along with automatic emergency braking.
  • Gas Mileage 7/10 – Fuel economy is okay at up to 26 MPG, giving 410 miles of range from the 15.8 gallon tank. Gas costs are $18 cheaper than average at $215 per month.
  • Value 6/10 – The 2019 Jeep Cherokee is cheaper than many other SUVs, yet there are expensive problems showing up as they age, making them depreciate fast.

Jeep overland 2019 review!
I love my jeep Cherokee 2019 overland. I have only one complaint about it and that is a soft spot in my hood and it flaps going down the freeway. Other than that I have been comfortable driving in it, took long trips and the safety features such as the light up spot in the mirror for my blind spot is so helpful. The back up cam and sensory motion for backing up is helpful as well. I also enjoy the vented seats when it is 105 degrees outside.

Exceptional fit and finish of both interior and exterior
Jeep has done a tremendous job in terms of seat design comfort, electronic options, fit and finish of both the exterior and interior.

It's a great smaller SUV. Good gas mileage and no trouble driving

My vehicle has the best style that I need satisfyingly easy driving experience.
I have had great use of the jeep and it has performed as expected when I bought it. The comfort of driving the jeep has been extraordinary and reliability is out of this world. The features of the jeep have been just what I need to make the ride an easy means of travel and problem free.

Kid friendly vehicle for all seasons
I love my Jeep Cherokee. It features different terrain modes so I can feel safe driving, even in the winter time. It's spacious enough to fit two car seats comfortably in the back seat and the trunk space is not compromised so I can easily fit groceries for a family of four without needing to put the seats down. I can hook up my phone with Bluetooth and talk hands free on my mobile device. There are child locks for the windows and doors which puts me at ease with my three year old. I love the option to have heated seats, especially during Iowa's cold winters.

Strong towing capacity in Cherokee
My Jeep has good towing capacity with better turn radius than a truck making towing our boat simple. The inside storage capacity is good for a small SUV with the seats down. The engine drives well and I enjoy driving it. I really like the paint color options.

Jeep Cherokee with small issue on the radio.
I love the vehicle that I own. I have had one glitch with it that bothers me, which is the radio system. Since it is on the large screen sometimes the screen does not always turn on and you need to reset it and that can take some time of just sitting and letting it reset. Besides that small problem with technology I have no complaints about my vehicle.

Awesome family car. Great gas mileage
I've only had the car for 2 weeks but absolutely love it. Coming from a truck, the gas mileage is great. I average about 23-24 mpg. It has plenty of room for my family but small enough to maneuver and park easily.

Poor choice of vehicle!
I bought mine new with 31 miles at the end of October 2019. It has been in repair ever since and has had most of the front end replaced. (Still not fixed) Well over 30 days in repair. Chrysler/Jeep still say it's not a lemon even though I'm paying on a vehicle I have not Been able to drive. DO NOT buy anything Jeep as this is my 2nd one in 2 years that has had issues. The dealer traded me out of my 2018 Jeep Renegade because it kept loosing all power and they couldn't find what was wrong with it!

Engine sucks, should at least be a v6 not a 4 cyl.
Does not have enough power at all! It scares me! The get up and go sucks. I also hate the auto shut off feature as well. I wish there was a way to completely disable that. I like the size and colors of it! If it had a larger engine with more power I’d probably love it.

Its uhh a meh car has some bugs to it.
It kind of stinks because the acceleration is bad, the start-stop doesn't always works it picks and chooses when it wants to work. It stopped on my daughter at a stop sign out of nowhere, it stopped on me and my son on the freeway which was very unsafe. It just has a lot of bugs maybe because I got it the year before so I got a sucky one but if you want to give it a try be my honor.

Unreliable & safety hazard
Would not recommend this vehicle unless Jeep gives a contract that safety issues would be covered regardless of mileage. Either they will pay for mechanical work or pay for a replacement. My 2019 Jeep Latitude has stalled several times while driving & I have to put the vehicle in park & it takes several attempts to restart. The interior lights blink & is more like a disco strobe light(talk about giving you a headache. There is also a terrible noise that the vehicle will make when the ignition is turned off-sounds like something growling. Service mechanical .... Light comes on but doesn't stay on long enough to see what the other wording is. Jeep had 12 miles when I purchased it so it was bought new off the lot & have had issues almost immediately. Doesn't seem safe & I'm constantly having to worry about it stalling & causing a crash.

Very Poor Service Lack of Parts
NO!! I’ve had mine 23 months. I have an alternator problem and the dealership says I have to wait 3 to 5 days just for a diagnosis. They have no idea how long it will take to get the parts.

What Do Critics Say About the Jeep Cherokee?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2019 Jeep Cherokee is a mediocre SUV with little to like and it gets low owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Cherokee at 3.5/5, praising the optional 8.4-inch touchscreen stereo system, but doesn’t like the slow base engine.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Cherokee a 3.9/5, enjoying the nice four-wheel drive system, but owners don’t like the poor fuel economy.

What Common Problems Does the 2019 Jeep Cherokee Have?

Common problems found on the 2019 Jeep Cherokee include the engine shutting down while driving, changing gears poorly, as well as some stereo system issues. Overall, these problems are worse than other SUVs, leading to expensive repair bills in some cases.

The engine shutting down while driving is the most widespread complaint from 2019 Jeep Cherokee owners at around 20,000 miles. There are problems with the powertrain control module software. Jeep issued a recall to cover the issue where they will update the software or replace the entire control module for free.

Changing gears poorly has also been mentioned by many Cherokee owners in the first 45,000 miles. The nine-speed automatic transmission has both hardware and software issues which cause it to shift poorly. Replacing the transmission costs over $3,000, while a software update can be done for under $100.

Stereo system issues with the Uconnect system have also shown up on a lot of Cherokee models in the first 10,000 miles. There are software updates available which improve the reliability of the stereo, which most dealers will install for free. If the head unit fails it’s about $850 to replace.

There are 9 recalls on the 2019 Jeep Cherokee, which is much worse than other SUVs from the same year. There are a lot of serious recalls covering the steering rack gears, transmission calibration, instrument cluster, engine computer, as well as damaged cylinders. Jeep will repair or replace all of the parts on affected models for free.

How Long Will the 2019 Jeep Cherokee Last?

A well-maintained 2019 Jeep Cherokee can last around 150,000 miles before it becomes too expensive to own, which is only half as long as the top-rated Toyota 4Runner. Regular annual maintenance costs are close to average according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $381 per year.

As a used 2019 Jeep Cherokee ages and reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the A/C compressor for $1,000, rear trailing arm costing $825, as well as the camshaft position sensor, which costs $400.

accountCircle Marissa V

It is reliable. No problems so far. Mileage is great the gas is cheap the jeep Cherokee is absolutely amazing.

accountCircle Ellen K

It is reliable. I do not feel there are any problems with this vehicle. The only thing is acceleration is a little weak.

accountCircle Lisa K

I believe it is a reliable vehicle. I have not had any problems with it and I have now had it for 7 months. There have been no problems.

accountCircle Mayra C

I have not experienced any problems so far. I do not like the stop and start engine feature, where the vehicle turns off when on a complete stop without putting it on park.

accountCircle Mikayla C

So far it has been reliable. It gets me back and forth from VT to NC for school. Only problem is the stock tires change in pressure often.

accountCircle Stephanie L

No I have not found any issues yet. I am leasing the car so I will see in the future if there are any issues.

accountCircle Lord Ahmes C

So far, the Cherokee is very reliable. I did not face any problem. I am very satisfied how it handles in the highway and in off road.

accountCircle Kelly S

No my jeep has not had any issues so far. It is very reliable and I prefer it over other models. Very good car.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is very good with a standard 7-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth connectivity along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Optional upgrades include the 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen, which also has a premium stereo system.

Standard safety technology is similar to other SUVs offering a rearview camera. Optional safety tech upgrades include blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, rear parking sensors, front parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, as well as lane departure warning.

Is the 2019 Jeep Cherokee a Good Value?

No, the 2019 Jeep Cherokee is not a good value since there are some transmission problems which are showing up as they get older. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $17,500 to $26,550, making it cheaper than a Honda Pilot or Mazda CX-9. When new, the price range was $25,045 to $38,495. Depreciation is worse than other small SUVs, losing about 12% of its current value per year.

What Engines Come In the Jeep Cherokee?

  • The base engine is an average 2.4L 4-cylinder which makes 180 horsepower at up to 25 MPG. All of the engines come paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission.
  • An available upgrade is the stronger 3.2L V6 which produces 271 horsepower while getting up to 23 MPG. Performance is very good, taking 6.7 seconds to go from 0-60 MPH. This engine also has a towing capacity of up to 4,500 pounds.
  • There’s also an efficient 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder which generates 270 horsepower at up to  26 MPG.

What Colors Does the Jeep Cherokee Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Jeep Cherokee?

The 2019 Jeep Cherokee is a comfortable SUV with seating for up to five passengers. Seating is nice for long drives, yet the entry-level models don’t offer as much cushioning as the upgraded ones.

Passenger room is good in both the front and rear seats, although the Cherokee does not offer a third row which is found in some of the competitors. The sliding rear seat also offers extra legroom for taller adults.

How Much Storage Space Does the Jeep Cherokee Have?

Cargo space is lower than other SUVs, offering enough room for 4-5 suitcases behind the rear seats and 10-12 with the seats folded flat.

VehicleHistory Image

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The fifth generation of the Jeep Cherokee was launched in 2014.

2015: Rearview camera standard on Latitude and Trailhawk models.

2016: Siri Eyes Free added to the Uconnect stereo system.

2017: Standard Xenon headlights on all models aside from Sport, new Overland model introduced.

2018: Latitude Plus model added.

2019: New turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, minor exterior styling changes, upgraded stereo system available.

2020: No major changes.

2021: More safety technology added across all models, Latitude Lux edition available.

How Does the Jeep Cherokee Compare to the Competition?

The 2019 Jeep Cherokee is a bad SUV since there are a lot of mechanical problems which show up as they age, making them one buyers should stay away from.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a larger SUV from Jeep which costs nearly $8,000 more. Passenger room and performance are both better in the Jeep Grand Cherokee, while the Jeep Cherokee fits better down trails with its narrower wheelbase. We recommend the Jeep Grand Cherokee since they are more reliable for the 2019 model year.

The Ford Escape is another compact SUV which is available for $500 less. Standard safety technology is better in the Ford Escape, while the Jeep Cherokee has nicer interior materials. We recommend the Ford Escape since there are fewer mechanical problems reported by owners.

Completely Unreliable
The Jeep has been in the shop now for over a month - it simply stopped running. So far they discovered that the PTU needs to be replaced. That's on a Jeep that only has 40,000 KM (12,000 miles). This is complete unacceptable from Jeep. This was supposed to be a long term car - but as it turns out - I cannot rely on the Jeep to get me from Point A. To Point B.

Lots of options/packages to pick from.
Heated steering wheel is very nice in winter, cooled seats are very nice in summer, especially on leather seats. I'd prefer if the gas tank was on the driver's side instead of the passenger side. Random wiring issues with touch screen. I wish there was a CD player but the USB ports and the 2 pronged outlet is nice.

The 2019 jeep Cherokee is an very reliable and economic-friendly vehicle. I have taken a couple of long road trips and I am very impressed with the miles per gallon the car uses and how inexpensive it is to fill-up the vehicle. Great vehicle with minimal concerns.
Love it except the backing camera seems incorrectly calibrated to the surroundings or incorrectly lined up relative to the vehicle and also the auto start/stop feature randomly disables. While backing into a parking space the camera will display that I am too far to the right when really I am in the middle of the parking space. I do not use the auto start/stop feature so that does not particularly affect me.

I have one question for all you Jeep owners, I bought a Cherokee Trailhawk, love it myself but am having a problem with the hood, its normal when driving but as soon as a semi truck drives past the wind caused from it passing going the opposite way, causes my hood to raise up from that wind. I love my new vehicle. The comfort and ride make it feel more like a car than a jeep or truck. Smooth ride. However I have had some problem with it ever since I got it in terms of the engine and the oil consumption. I have taken it to the jeep dealerships several times this year and they have not given me an option for trading it in or getting a new engine.

I absolutely love my 2019 jeep Cherokee latitude plus!
Love how smooth of a ride it is, the interior on the plus model is definitely worth the cost. Wish it was a little bit bigger. Only downside so far is that it is on the louder side. Also the extra compartment in the dashboard is fantastic for little niknaks like my keys while I am driving, gum, pens, my ipass and more.

2019 Cherokee-very reliable!
I absolutely love my car. The technology is very up to date. Heated seats, electronically moving seats, apple car play...I love the quality of the speakers. Great for listening to music and making Bluetooth calls. The car rides very smoothly. After a year and a half, have had no problems.

I love the four wheel drive. Is amazing in the winter time.
As of right now I have not had any problems with my jeep Cherokee. Definitely is a reliable vehicle. I have used it to take road trips across the country and have not had any problems with it. Its is great if you live in an area like me in Chicago in the wintertime to use the four wheel drive.

Love this for a small SUV.
It is really comfortable to drive and I love the stereo and Panasonic sunroof. The seats are comfortable and the back seats are roomy enough for my 3 kids. The drive is smooth and the vehicle info features are really helpful to keep up with the vehicles maintenance.

Never buying anything but jeep.
I have had no problems with my vehicle at all. It has done great in the winter and the gas mileage is awesome for when we take road trips. I really like the different features it has like snow mode, because winters in the Midwest can be brutal. Overall, very satisfied!

Heated seats, power recliner. 4x4 good in snow. Sunroof!
Nothing wrong with my jeep I love it! Leather and suede seats not to mention they are heated seats! It is even good on gas. All black, with red calipers is the way to go! It is also even good in the snow. I totally recommend this jeep. You can never go wrong.

A great car that will take you on an adventure in every climate.
This is a great car for people who need a reliable vehicle. Great on sand or snow and is very reliable. The gas mileage is great and the interior is sleek and easily cleanable. My favorite feature is the detectable land changes. It will switch from snow to rain to sand and is great for changing weather.

I like the safety features.
The battery died after 2 years and I needed to purchase a new one. Otherwise there have been no other issues surf the car. I like all the features that the car comes with. The car does well on gas and mileage. I would highly recommend this car to a buyer.

Heated seats, heated steering wheel and the great back up camera.
Drives awesome great in snow and slush. Heated seats and steering wheel just an absolutely wonderful. Car suv. Drives as good of any car that I have ever owned and takes me anywhere. Four wheel drive works great abs help me get where I need to go. This is the third keep that I have owned and I really love it.

2019 jeep Cherokee honest review.
I enjoy my vehicle, but I never should have gotten the 4 cylinder. I should have paid more for the v6. And for the price, although I have a backup camera and nice leather seats, a sunroof would have been nice. Or, heated seats. There is plenty of room which I do love. I also love the storage compartment in the trunk so I can hide bags or anything valuable from any peering eyes. I also enjoy uconnect feature with my phone. It runs great so I have no problems with that either, just wish the engine power was better.

The hidden gem that each jeep contains. There is a surprise hidden in every jeep.
I have had this care for over a year and I have not had any problems with it at all. As a matter of fact, I have had multiple jeeps and they have all been great cars. I only have to get normal service oil changes and tire checks. Would recommend this car and would buy again.

My little red jeep Cherokee.
I have never had any problems so far with my vehicle. I purchased it brand new with 17 miles on it. I love my jeep. It is roomy for my little family and I. It sits high enough in case it floods a little. I do wish it was keyless. I had gotten so use to that with my charger.

Great distance gas mileage on distance trips.
Seats are very comfortable. Has good power and 4x4 is good. Sometimes the transmission seems to slip. Air cabin filter may not last as long as it should. Overall so far, good vehicle, comfortable to travel several hours to a destination. We have gotten over 30 mpg on the gas mileage. Nice dual control for air conditioner or heat. Is fairly easy to see out of while driving. Nice beep, when changing lanes and car is in your blind spot, as well as, beeps when backing up, if person is walking or car is within range of you possibly hitting them.

Great vehicle... To small!
It is to small. I am a bigger guy and I went from having a ram to this. It is a great vehicle but comfort wise it is not for me. Gas mileage is great. Love the screen and how it works with my phone. All around great vehicle but as for the size, it is not for me.

The most eco friendly jeep I have driven.
This vehicle has remote start, heated seats, and a heated wheel. Another great thing about it, is that it is great on gas! Rides smooth, with a great sound system. Plenty of space with more than enough cup holders. Hooks up to my android and you can pull up apps on the screen. Great car!

My jeep is beautiful and practical!
I love my latitude! It is comfortable and roomy but very easy to drive. There is plenty of room for my family and a lot of cargo. It is also luxurious, with leather seats, seat warmers and excellent air conditioning. It has a large touch screen for all the controls, a back up camera and uconnect for my phone. I picked sandstone pearl and it is so sparkly and beautiful. I love that car so much.

2019 jeep Cherokee, a pretty good buy.
The 2019 jeep Cherokee is overall a nice vehicle. I have never had any technical or mechanical problems with it. A few things I do not like are the fact that you cannot upsize in tires very much, they also extended the length of the nose so it looks a little less, jeep, but they are spacious and they save gas due to the 4 cylinder engines.

2019 jeep Cherokee limited.
It a nice enough automobile but I am not a fan of the uconnect system. It often unsyncs from my phone while using GPS. Another problem is that the air conditioning and heating blower is extremely loud when in use above level 5. Again, it is a nice vehicle it is just nothing special for a new car.

Love our jeep and will buy another one!
Very reliable. Smooth, comfortable ride. Every feature is wonderful. The alarm when changing lanes scares you at first because it is so loud, but the concept is wonderful. It has so much storage and room yet doesn't look from the outside that it does. Great vehicle all the way around.

The space and the media system are great!
I really like the sound system in my jeep Cherokee. I also like that I have a touch screen media system which was a big upgrade from my last car because I can just Bluetooth my phone instead of using an aux cord. I also like how much space I have. Being a new mom it was important that I have enough space for the car seat as well as the diaper bags, stroller, etc.
