Alex Showalter
Nov 13, 2021

The 2016 Jeep Cherokee is an SUV with a price range of $13,748 to $25,687. It’s a good SUV for the money with more features than its competitors, but maintenance costs are above average.

likeFilled The Good
The 2016 Jeep Cherokee has excellent infotainment technology, an upscale interior for its price, and a powerful optional V6 engine.
dislikeFilled The Bad
It has higher ownership costs than other vehicles in its class and visibility is poor with the wide roof pillars. The transmission shifts roughly between gears, even under normal operation.

2016 Jeep Cherokee: Quick Overview

  • New features for 2016 include an updated infotainment system that improves on technology originally released in 2014.
  • Reliability ratings are average according to J.D. Power. The 2016 model has significantly fewer complaints than 2015.
  • Two engines are available. The four-cylinder is fuel-efficient but feels underpowered. The V6 has a higher-than-average towing capacity.
  • Fuel economy is good for an SUV. The Cherokee ranks 3rd in its class, getting a combined rating of up to 25 miles per gallon.
  • Safety ratings are average, earning a four-star rating in government crash tests.
  • The 2016 Cherokee ranks near the middle of its class based on owner reviews. It’s a good overall value with a comfortable ride and nice interior, but loses out with more mechanical problems than some competitors. Check out the Kelley Blue Book video review as well.

Buy a jeep Cherokee. Have not changed brakes yet.
I have no problems with my jeep Cherokee. The performance of this vehicle is great. It has 145,000 miles on it and I am still on the first set of brakes. I have not had any repairs other than the normal wear and tear on this vehicle. It rides smoothly and the pickup is enough to keep up with traffic.

Great gas mileage and great for road trips.
My car is amazing, it is very spacious, it has lots of storage, and it gets great gas mileage. I have had it from a new car and have had no issues with it at all. I have taken it on many road trips that involved driving in the mountains, and it has been incredible. The only complaint I have is it is not 4 wheel drive.

2016 jeep Cherokee latitude.
Great gas mileage for a SUV. Rides well. My primary driving vehicle. Auto stop/start feature (that turns off car at red lights and stop signs) quit working after 3 years. That was the only annoying feature, although it was supposed to be a positive asset. Thankful that it stopped working.

Amazing car great value love it.
Going from a 2003 to a 2016 is amazing. My car has a sports mode which is amazing. The interior is easy to clean good trunk space, heated seats and heated steering wheel great for the winter. Remote starter is great for the winter the mopar system allows you to start the car with your phone.

Sporty jeep for a busy mom.
I love the way the vehicle drives. It is very smooth and easy to park in tight spaces. The back up camera is my favorite feature. Adds the element of safety I was looking for. I bought this car to use as my travel vehicle for work. I spend a lot of time in the road and the gas mileage is great. My one complaint is lack of space in the front. If I have a passenger in front, then I have nowhere to put my purse.

I love my Jeep Cherokee sunroof
I have zero problems with the Jeep Cherokee it is fully loaded and easy to drive in all types of weather it handles well on turns and off road driving. It has heated leather seats, remote start and Sirius XM radio as well as a covered sunroof that opens with a touch of a button

Has sensors that let you know if somebody is in your blind spot. Very handy on freeway.
Great vehicle. Has amazing features such as back up camera and blind spot sensors. Spacious, but not too big to drive around.

Quality car that you can depend on.
Drives smooth and looks good. I love blasting the radio while driving down the highway. It is a very comfortable and I do not have back pain when going on long road trips. My friends tell me that the back seat is comfortable and there is plenty of room. Trunk space is big and fits everything I need.

Frustrated
I like the look of the vehicle but since I’ve purchased it I’ve had nothing but grief starting with rear window wiper having to be replaced (50) to both head light bulbs burning out at the same time,(minor cost to replace at 800) and the dealer telling me they could not get the vehicle in until the following week ( I guess they figured I didn’t need to drive after 5). Next to go was the battery (400) and the brakes at over 1000 dollars. The brakes actually had to be replaced 4’xs within 6 months. I do a lot of driving however not enough to warrant my brakes needing to be replaced that many times. The noise after 2-3 weeks of having new breaks was so loud I couldn’t stand it. So now I’ve been told my alternated has ceased and needs to be replaced along with a belt at a minor cost of 1400. My vehicle is a 2016 and now has 171000 km on it. Would I buy another Jeep ABSOLUTELY NOT and would not recommend it to anyone.

Too small, four wheel drive is hard to turn on does not turn well. Hate it.
Hard to get into. Hard to clean the inside. Not big enough tall people have a hard time getting in. Grown to hate it, love it when I first bought it.
accountCircle Flor R
It is not that fast, it is slow on turns and the blind spots.
This is not a bad car, it is great to go out with friends but it consumes a lot of gas hay adds up on the day to day commute to work. I do not like the trim of the car as I feel it is very rough and rustic for this model. Overall the vehicle is a little rough and not a super smooth ride. If you have kids and go to soccer games and other activities I think this will be a good fit because it has good storage in my opinion. Lots of room for passengers. For someone with no kids I recommend to stay away because there really is not a point in having such a big car that wastes so much. If I could change one thing I would make it more compact, less bulky and better on gas. More color variety would be nice as well.

4WD
Hell no. Bought it for the 4WD. After going to 2 trailheads in one month the Service 4WD light came on and said it was unavailable. Haven't been able to afford to get it in due to layoff from COVID. Light goes off and on, usually a couple months between. Bought it in July. No warranty ( how convenient for the dealership). Light has gone off and on twice...on now that winter is here of course. A week ago was traveling and washer fluid sprayer wasn't working (slushy, icy roads). Had to replace the sprayer because the cheap plastic part attached to it busted clean off. This car is a lemon! The shifting is also c**p. Never again.

2016 jeep Cherokee sport.
My 2016 jeep Cherokee sport burns oil and has issues with shifting it also has an issue with the shifter where it will light up and flash service shifter on the dash. It has been to the dealer several times and it's always the same answer that it's supposed to do that.

Rip Off Dealer Service
4 Wheel drive check engine light came on - Illinois dealer charged $1,937 to replace Power take off unit because it was too labor intensive to check out reason for light coming on intermittently. Overcharged $354 for parts (Mopar parts Giant.com) and $450 over estimated Labor costs! Great car, worst rip-off dealer service I have ever encountered. -- Joe O

Jeep Cherokee Latitude, bad purchase
I financed this vehicle thinking it would be highly dependable, however I was mistaken as it had several electrical issues related to its manufacturing. Jeep made it right by correcting the problem, however I don't understand how a company could leave it without necessary testing. I think this brand is too costly and fell away from dependable from the 80's and 90's vehicles. I would not purchase another jeep.

What Problems Does the 2016 Jeep Cherokee have?

The 2016 Jeep Cherokee has fewer problems than the 2014  and 2015 models, but still has some mechanical issues. The 2016 Cherokee problems cover bad brakes, defective cruise control, axel failure, and even potential fires.

Transmission problems, including irregular and difficult shifting, are the most common issues reported. The most common source of the problem is software issues, a bad wiring harness, or a failed transmission.

Engines stalling and dying while driving are also mentioned by owners. In some cases, it’s caused by low oil pressure, and there’s a technical service bulletin to update the software to prevent the problem. Some owners have also required engine replacements, but it’s very rare.

Trouble starting is another problem found in the Cherokee and is frequently caused by computer issues or a failed alternator.

There are seven recalls affecting the 2016 Jeep Cherokee, which is more than average for an SUV its age. Recalls include the liftgate, front half shaft, torque on seat fasteners, fire extinguisher, cruise control, and power transfer unit. Most serious are the front half shafts, if one breaks it increases the risk of an accident.

What are the Prices, Models & Specs?

Repair Pal estimates the maintenance costs to be around $515 per year.

accountCircle Becky L

I have not had any difficulties at this time. The only Bad part is that I bought it used and it needs an oil change.

accountCircle Brianna W

Yes, I haven't had any problems since purchasing it. I utilize both the keyless remote feature and everything else with no problems.

accountCircle Jennifer B

No, they are quite reliable. They do not overheat or break down a lot. The car is very smooth to ride in.

accountCircle Dino C

No problems runs great. Just the normal service. Oil changes. So far it was a good purchase. No problem with pick up runs great.

accountCircle Jose M

In my opinion I would say the jeep latitude is a really reliable car and efficient. Only problem I have noticed is that it burns through oil pretty quick so you got to keep adding more.

accountCircle Cynthia J

It is very reliable and I have no problems. Once it started stopping on me, but I found out that was my fault because I left the gas cap loose. They just screwed the gas cap back on and I was on my way.

accountCircle Vee M

No problems just your normal basic wear and tear, depending on your driving schedule it could last you more than three years and every six months an oil change.

accountCircle Luis L

Only issue with the car is the engine oil reader sometimes reads no oil. The car will shut down engine whether your driving or where you are at. Only fix is to keep oil topped off at all times.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

Technology in the 2016 Cherokee is excellent for its class and price. The infotainment technology was initially introduced for the 2014 model year, and was updated in 2016.

  • Base technology includes a five-inch infotainment screen with USB and Bluetooth connectivity.
  • Upgrades include a larger 8.4-inch infotainment screen, a nine-speaker Alpine stereo system, and wireless Qi charging.

  • The base, and most efficient, engine is a 2.4L four-cylinder with 184 horsepower.
  • An upgraded 3.2L V6 is available, producing 271 horsepower.

What Colors Options are Available?

How Big is the Cherokee?

The 2016 Cherokee has exterior dimensions similar to a compact SUV, but passenger room is much closer to a midsize. Rear seats in the Cherokee slide and recline, making it more comfortable for adults compared to other choices. Cargo space is below average with only 24.6 cu. ft. of room with the seats up. It’s enough room for four suitcases, but it will be tight. The space increases to 54.9 cu. ft. with the seats folded flat.

How Does the 2016 Jeep Cherokee Compare to Other SUVs?

The 2016 Jeep Cherokee ranks 10th out of 17 midsize SUVs based on owner reviews. At the top of the lineup is the Toyota 4Runner, which is much more expensive than the Cherokee. The Toyota is built with a classic body-on-frame design making it better off-road. The Cherokee has better technology and a more luxurious interior. Where Toyota wins out is with a longer-lasting engine and lower cost of ownership. Ultimately, the price difference is significant here, targeting different car buyers.

Another rival is the Nissan Murano. Prices are similar between the two, but the base Cherokee is slightly more affordable. Reliability is similar, but the Murano does have more transmission problems. The Jeep features a more refined and quieter interior than the Nissan. Overall, the Jeep is the better choice since it has higher-end technology for the money.

Not happy
I bought this jeep 1 yrs ago, with 28,600 miles on it. Its been good on gas, but several things make me unhappy with it.: The headrest pushes my head too forward, and the sides of the seat push my shoulders forward. It has affected my posture. I feel the radio controls on the back of the steering wheel are stupid. The climate controls would be better. It is dangerous trying switch to defrost while driving, using that touch screen. The front pillar makes a blind spot when turning left and i have to guess if im in a lane or going to hit a median curb( and i did) The headlights are way too dim, even on high. I dont feel its safe to drive at night. I have read others feel this way, also. I received a recall notice to update the computer, having to due with the tranny. Since i had it updated, it feels like it slips. There is also about a 4 second lag from when put in gear until it actually goes into gear. There is also a delay when switching between screens (the screen on the dash that controls everything)of about 5 seconds or when switching cruise on or off. Its very annoying. The radio is always on and can only mute it. It came with no spare tire, just a compressor with some slime stuff. The rear cargo area is rather small and doesnt fit my needs. I bought cross bars for the roof rack. I didnt know, at the time, that there are no tie down points on the front or rear, so that was useless. And finally, the shape and curve of the back doors make it hard for my dog to get in or out. Overall, if i had known all of this, i would NOT have bought this vehicle. Cruise is put on or off

Great ride, not great gas mileage.
This 2016 jeep Cherokee is very reliable, and fun to drive. I love the sport function as it makes for a zippy drive. I am not crazy about the gas mileage, it does not get very good mileage, about 20 mpg in my experience. I am a big fan of the 4 wheel drive, gets me through snowy conditions well.

Backup camera, large screen for the radio and heater and air conditioner.
I really like it but it is to small for my three kids car seats in the back. Also, I do not care for the transmission. I feel like it is not shifting when it should. Especially when pulling hills. I like the comfortable seats and the interior is really nice as well.

The 2016 jeep Cherokee with panoramic sunroof, heated seats and steering wheel.
I need a bigger car with third row because I have three kids who barely fit in the back of my jeep. I also need new tires and a couple small dent removals with paint. I love my heated seats and steering wheel as well as my panoramic sunroof. I like that my car has the big screen for my radio as well.

Slow car, it rides nice. It's pretty, good gas mileage, it doesn't have a sunroof wish it did, I have had some problems with the wire harness that a lot of others have issues with too, as well as the shifter. Very spacious! Used as daily commute and very reliable in all weather conditions, also been used to go camping and it's great for the outdoors. Very good on gas for long drives, has all the bells and whistles, love the back up camera and the car can take curvy roads and holds well to the ground, not very heavy and gets up quick.

Fun, comfortable, & luxurious.
I love that it combines my multiple needs. It gets great gas mileage, while being 4wd. It has a great traction feature that has never failed me & I live in a rural area with dirt roads & mud & mountains. I also love that it looks sporty on the outside but feels luxurious on the inside, with the leather seats, heated steering wheel, back up camera, huge cargo space, & detailed stitching in the leather. As if that is not enough, it has an awesome sound system too. I have had mine for six months & love it!

I love my jeep and I plan on having it for as long as possible. The only problem I have had is the vehicle shuts off if your oil gets too low which is scary. I added more oil and it was fine. I have had a wonderful experience with my jeep Cherokee. I have had it since 2016 and I have had no issues. The only thing I would have changed was getting leather seats instead of cloth. Just because I have a toddler and he spills everything. Other than that it is been wonderful!

Good vehicle for getting back and forth to work.
Visibility is not that great, large blind spots. I miss having automatic lights, keyless start and entry. The backup camera is annoying. I prefer to use mirrors and to just look over my shoulder. The rear bumper feels very cheap and my dog often slips on it when she jumps out. It is just awkward and plasticky. The vehicle is a large step down from the grand Cherokee in quality and value.

My jeep cherokee has all the features I could want. From heated seats to panoramic sunroof, I am happy with my vehicle and will buy another cherokee in the future. Although the 4 cylinder is a little small for this vehicle it gets good gas mileage, about 27 mpg on average. I have not had any problems with my vehicle. I also have it in a garage and regularly get the oil changed and keep it clean. I have never had the engine light come on. It is definitely the most comfortable vehicles I have ever driven and is very reliable. The only complaint I have is that it lacks on power. Jeep has always been a great brand, the newer models are even better. A keyless start, back up camera, and screen for everything from radio to media to climate. The one frustration is that my phone connects to the Bluetooth media player, however, it tends to skip, it sounds almost like a CD skipping... It does t always do this, but when it does, there is no way to fix it until you have turned the car off, turned Bluetooth off on your phone, and hope it works..

My Cherokee latitude is the fifth jeep I have purchased.
My Cherokee latitude is very roomy I love the large screen for navigation and the back up camera. I have had very little mechanical issues, the dealership I bought from was less than helpful, my engine heat was running low, even though I paid over 2k for the extended warranty I was informed this was not covered and would cost 600.00. I have not used the dealership since. This is my fourth jeep. The back seats are less than comfortable but otherwise I love the room and being able to lay seats down. The one complaint I have on buying brand new is they now do not include a spare tire just an inflator with slime to stop up hole. I love the way the jeep looks. I bought a silver color and am super happy with it. I have driven across the country with three people and two dogs. I feel this is a very reliable car, easy to drive and low upkeep. I also get thirty miles to the gallon combined.

It is fun, sporty, mpg is great for an SUV and it is roomy enough for four people. Probably not larger people but fits my family fine! Great gas mileage, comfy ride.
The only issue that I have had is when the battery died suddenly and I was stuck in traffic- due to everything being electric, I couldn't even put the car in neutral to get out of the way. Had to have a jump. The interior is nice, the gas mileage is amazing. I get about 25 mpg city and usually 30+ mpg highway. I do a lot of highway traveling and putting cruise control on helps increase the gas mileage. Love this jeep.

Comfortable riding vehicle.
The jeep Cherokee is a comfortable riding vehicle. It is good on gas. It is very roomy and comfortable for long trips there back area is roomy for storage and the back seats fold down flat. The back seats recline some, so this makes it nice for back seat passengers. The four cylinder does seem to struggle when going up hills.

Jeep Cherokee: roadtrippers dream.
This car is incredibly reliable. It has a good amount of cargo space, enough to pack everything in my dorm in one trip. It drives very smoothly and has great features like a backup camera with object alerts. The motorized bucket seats are very comfortable and it is a great car for long drives.

Hint of luxury and a whole lot of adventure.
I love my jeep Cherokee. It is a great vehicle for my adventures in nature, but also has a hint of luxury on the interior. The trunk is spacious, especially when I fold the back row of seats. I rarely have back seat passengers, so I cannot attest to the spaciousness of the back seat. I selected the all black exterior, including the black rims. I think it gives the car very sleek look, and I am very pleased with it. I have found it very helpful that the dashboard can display the current status of the jeep via controls on the steering wheel. For example, the current psi on all four tires, % of oil, etc... I also really like the touch screen that controls the radio/Bluetooth/temperature display etc. Lastly, I love the continental tires that my car came with. I have found them to be very reliable when driving in a variety of weather conditions and such. I have not had any serious issues with the car thus far, and I have owned it for about 4 years now.

Ok vehicle, decent and reliable.
The car is ok. It is reliable and have not had any problems with it. The only issue came with the passenger side door handle. It has come off twice and had to be put back on. It is been pretty annoying. Another issue I have is that it is hard to see your blind spot in the vehicle as well.

Unexpected issues but overall satisfied. Feeling elite while driving.
My charging port (cigarette lighter) does not work and you would think a car this new wouldn't have an issue like that. Also the trunk does not stay open without me holding it up. I can fix it but again, a car this new shouldn't have this issue. Interior is very nice. Good sound system. Comfortable and spacious.

Love that you cannot lock keys in car.
Would like more room considering most jeeps are roomy. Does not have a lot of pick me up when applying on the gas. However, is a 6 cylinder. Love the leather seats easy to clean. Would like more room in the back as well with more leg room. Hatchback that unlocks when keys are close to car which is helpful. Cannot lock your keys in the car which is also helpful.

It is very dependable. Other than regular services, I have had no problems.
It is very reliable. However, I bought a basic model and wish I had more options. I was looking at price, but perhaps didn't do a cost/benefit analysis it is comfortable, but feels basic now. I would seriously consider another jeep when I next make an auto purchase.

I like most of the features; specifically the sun/moon roof of the car.
My vehicle is one that I have wanted for a while. It performs well however, I recently had an issue with my seat. The seat lost power only on one feature. The unfortunate part is that my warranty just expired in October and I have been told that it would not have covered the cost to repair it.

My jeep ? Best SUV ever.
I have only had a thermostat issue and gear shift issue both covered under warranty. My jeep feels like the seat hugs you but still room enough for 5 people. It drives great in the snow. She drives comfortably and is easy to drive even if your short. It also has features such as mud and sand for different road conditions.

Jeep life is the best life.
Only had it a couple months. I love it. A passenger was bummed it did not have lumbar support and ended up with some lower back pain. Love the navigation package. The Jeep is wide and allows a lot more room on the interior which works perfect for all my long road trips.

It drives well in the snow
The only thing I don't like is that it doesn't have dual temperature controls. I love the heated seats and steering wheel. It handles good in the snow.

Great car for long travels.
Battery and alternator is bad already so I already had to have the battery do which is was on the dealership and now I need to get my alternator fixed and replaced which I have to buy that. Other than that it's great I love it good on gas and driving long distances.

Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk: good performance & all terrain.
Has problems with engine start up and tread at times but overall works efficiently. Needs work, as most jeeps demand. But good in all terrain, weather conditions, etc. Overall a very good “first vehicle” option. Highly recommend for first time jeep users trying to get comfortable.

Jeep Cherokee sports edition.
Stylish body. Very comfortable and spacious. Seats offer good support and come in cloth or leather. Back rows adjust down for more trunk space 8. 4 inch Uconnect touchscreen is nice and easy to use. Camera grabs a very wide range and is very clear. Have not had any issues with it.

2016 jeep Cherokee with a black exterior and black interior.
It is too big. It does no have four wheel drive. The interior is very modest. It has a backup camera. It does not meet my current needs. The exterior is black in color. The interior is black in color. I bought it for reasons that are no longer relevant.

My jeep is good and bad but still enjoyable.
Tire pressure goes up and down constantly. The pick up is great though. The color has faded a bit but all in all a very good performance car. We made the stains on are own. Battery also dies constantly. But it is all in working condition. I do enjoy driving this car.
