Interior materials are better than other cars in the same price range, the infotainment system is easy to use, and fuel economy is better than the competitors.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Expensive engine failures are very common, the back seats are cramped for adults, and there’s more road noise than other compact cars.

2013 Hyundai Elantra: Quick Overview

  • New features for 2013 include coupe and GT hatchback models, upgraded technology, and the addition of the Atlantic Blue exterior color.
  • Reliability ratings are poor, with more owner complaints than any other model year.
  • Only one engine is available, and the motor is underpowered even for a compact car.
  • Fuel economy is good, ranking 7th out of 38 vehicles with a combined rating of up to 32 miles per gallon.
  • Safety ratings are excellent, getting five out of five stars in government crash tests and earning the Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
  • The 2013 Elantra ranks 24th out of 39 compact cars, based on owner reviews. The Elantra’s mechanical problems alone are a reason to choose another compact car.

Drives good and gets good gas mileage
Vehicle is a four door sedan and have had it for 5 years. I like the gas mileage, ample trunk space and the way it drives.

Great bang for the buck. For a compact car, it offers plenty of amenities at an affordable price.
I like the size and the handling. It's been very reliable and offers good fuel economy. Also, it's quite comfy for a compact car.

Bluetooth setup is very interesting characteristic.
Performance is great, good on gas mileage. The order does not sound great all the time but good car. Bad part is my car has cloth fabrics on the seats, not leather. It stains easily and cannot get the stain out quick at all. Great USB cord connection.

Very reliable and gets great gas mileage with lots of great features.
My car is 5 years old and has held up great. I've had no major problems with it as I keep up with regular maintenance. I chose the limited model and love my leather seats, sun/moon roof and power windows and locks! The only thing I wish it had was a backup camera which weren't standard in cars back when I bought mine.

Safe, reliable car. A great vehicle for commuting and running errands
No problems at all with the car, it was the right price and with all the features I needed/wanted when purchasing.

Economical and practical.
My vehicle is the most comfortable, dependable and safest car I have owned. I would recommend this car to anyone in the future. Hyundai has came a long way just in t h e past couple of years. Hyundai looks and feels like a luxury car but it is economical and practical very good on gas and low maintenance.

2013 Hyundai Elantra limited.
I love my car! It drives very smooth and does not feel cheap. I average 35-39 mpg on the highway which is amazing. It is comfortable to ride in and looks sharp too. So far I have not had any major issues with it so all and all, it has been a good car!

The touring lifestyle is efficient.
While this car is small is holds a lot. The gas mileage is amazing. It takes only $30 to fill the tank even when gas prices are running high. The car has good get up and go. It is comfortable for long road trips as well. The radio/stereo is really high quality and the sound is great. I have had almost no problems with this car outside of the general wear and tear.

Pros and Cons on having this vehicle!
My Vehicle has tan interior horrible for children! Not enough trunk space. Half of my charging devices doesn't work in the vehicle. Things that I do like about the vehicle is the gas mileage on top of having an eco button which I leave on at all times.

Does what I need but for how long?
I bought my Hyundai Elantra new used with 60,000 miles approximately, hoping to have a good work car to put mileage on. It gets great gas mileage. Otherwise..It is horrible in any precipitation and I feel unsafe in during those times. It is not very soundproof, sound can easily be heard inside and out. Bumps are felt and make you cringe. I've grown accustomed to rear wiper blades and I miss those. The heated seats are nice as well as the Sirius radio/blue but I am not even a thousand miles after buying I am starting to get a lot warning lights, as well as funny behavior.

Will never buy a Hyundai again
I have had nothing but issues with this car. The hood switch sucks and constantly sets off the car alarm at all hours. I will now have to replace it as I was putting a pad under the hood bumper to stop it, but that does not work anymore. I took it in for an oil change and the idiot at the shop said "Oh your car is burning oil, so you need a new engine." After taking it in for a second opinion, the other guy said that oil burning off is a known thing for this car and i did not have to replace the engine. At times, my car won't start at all, and I have to really bang on the shifter so that the car knows it is in park. I have never had so many stupid little issues with a car in my life. I have also taken it in twice for recall stuff. I just really don't like the car. I will avoid Hyundai models in the future.

It is unreliable and the gas mileage that was advertised is not accurate
It is very unreliable. I would never consider buying another Hyundai. There is not much I like about this vehicle

None that I can think of. I don't like it.
I don't like it. The body style needs work. It doesn't have the puck up that I desire. To me this car overall is just not a good car and the makers should take the time to make it amazing because it has the potential to be an amazing car if more thought was put into it.

Engine "Tick of death"
My Elantra developed an engine knock at 53k which required engine change. Turns out this is a design fault with Elantras and many develop this "tick of death" due to "piston slap". Stay away from Hyundai.
accountCircle Daniel S
Front 2 wheel drive frequent maintenance.
Has bad maintenance problems, the ac is starting to fail now. The tail lights tend to go out quick. Be ready to have extra on hand. The oil change is a constant. Then be ready to change your tires frequently. The engine light will get stuck and oil light. The axel will cause problems over time after getting new tires.
accountCircle Rachelka O
Eco is a lie, save your money.
Vehicle is not as good on gas as advertised, interior layout is somewhat uncomfortable for anyone over 5'6, the eco function does not save gas. The trunk is okay on space, the rear seats fold down with ease, not great for installing car seats unless they are small. Visibility is adequate. Handling and steering quickly became 'loose' feeling, minor electrical issues audio and Bluetooth controls on steering wheel.

What Problems Does the 2013 Hyundai Elantra Have?

The 2013 Hyundai Elantra is significantly worse than other compact cars, with costly mechanical problems. 2013 is the worst year for the Elantra based on the high number of owner complaints.

Engine problems, including ticking noises in the engine and complete failures are very common. The only solution is to replace the entire engine, and costs over $4,000 depending on the local labor rates in your area.

Premature tire wear is another complaint owners have. Usually, the source of the problem is improper alignment. Replacing the tires and getting the car aligned usually costs about $700.

Grinding noise from the brakes is another common issue. Usually, the brakes will grind when there are worn-out pads or rotors. Replacing the components solves the issue, and costs around $300.

There are three recalls, which is better than other compact cars. The recalls include headliner support brackets, and the brake pedal stopper pad. Most serious is the brake pedal stopper pad, since a failure will leave the brake lights on, and can prevent drivers from shifting out of park.

What are the Prices, Models & Specs?

The 2013 Hyundai Elantra is average-priced for a compact car, with a price range of $8,044 to $12,125, depending on the model and mileage. When new, the price range was $16,965 to $21,115. Depreciation is average, dropping about 40% in value over the first five years.

  • GLS is the entry-level model and comes standard with 16-inch steel wheels, cloth seating, folding rear seats, and a six-speaker stereo system with an AM/FM/CD player, AUX input, and USB connectivity.
  • SE is next in the lineup with 17-inch alloy wheels, sport-tuned suspension, and body-colored trim pieces.
  • Limited is the flagship model with 17-inch alloy wheels, leather seating, a power driver’s seat, heated front, and rear seats, and a seven-inch infotainment system with Bluetooth and app integration.

How Long Will the 2013 Hyundai Elantra Last?

A properly maintained 2013 Hyundai Elantra can last about 200,000 miles, which is average for the class. Shoppers should be aware of engine failures which are common around 60,000 to 100,000 miles. Regular maintenance costs including oil changes, are average for the class. Repair Pal estimates them to be $450 per year.

accountCircle Colette W

I have not had any reliability problems. I have had to replace the battery; it was quite expensive (I have a limited) because it was only carried at the dealership & 1 parts store. Stopped at a quick oil change place and in addition to the oil change, they topped off the fluids. Found out 2 days later that the 'blue' wiper fluid turns to gel in this car. It cost me just under $200 for the dealership to flush out that line. This should have been something told to all customers so this expense could have been avoided.

accountCircle Austin L

It makes a whine and the engine shifts when it wants. Other than this, no issues with the vehicle...

accountCircle Brianna A

Yes it is very reliable. Have had no major problems. Even accidentally left a light on all night and the battery was fine in the morning.

accountCircle Michael C

It has a loose steering column which is kind of scary and very annoying with a knocking noise everytime the steering wheel centers, I am also not a fan of the deceleration of the car.

accountCircle Sarah H

Yes, it is very reliable. The only problem I would say it has is the lack of 4 wheel drive. I have found that the car skids quite a bit, but that is no fault of the car necessarily, just the poor condition of the roads.

accountCircle Victor N

For the most part the vehicle has been pretty reliable, the only things that needed to be done where minor maintenance.

accountCircle Allison B

The Hyundai Elantra is reliable. I had an electrical problem in the beginning, but this only caused a vanity light to go out.

accountCircle Sue W

Yes it is reliable, can be difficult to drive in snow, back end tends to fishtail. Need to drive in lower gear to control vehicle,

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

Technology features are very basic for the price on the entry-level models, but improve with the technology package on the limited version.

  • Base technology includes a simple AM/FM/CD player with AUX and USB connectivity, as well as six speakers.
  • Upgrades include a more powerful stereo system, a seven-inch infotainment system, navigation, Bluetooth, and app connectivity.
  • Standard safety features include anti-lock brakes, traction and stability control, and airbags. There’s a rearview camera included with the upgraded infotainment system.

How Big is the Elantra?

The 2013 Hyundai Elantra is offered in three body styles; a sedan, a GT four-door hatchback, and a coupe. How Does the 2013 Hyundai Elantra Compare to Other Cars?

Ranking 24th out of 39 compact cars based on owner reviews, the 2013 Hyundai Elantra is in the lower half of the class.

Higher up in the lineup is the Honda Civic, which is in the same price range. The Civic has significantly better reliability ratings, more passenger room, and offers a sportier driving experience. Interior materials are better in the Elantra, and the suspension is also smoother. Overall, the Civic is a better choice since they do not have as many mechanical issues.

Another close competitor is the more expensive Toyota Corolla. The Corolla wins out with significantly fewer owner complaints, a more reliable engine, and roomier back seats. The upgraded technology is better in the Elantra. The Toyota is less of a headache to own, and has lower ownership costs.

Do not be fooled by the specs!
I have a 2013 Elantra GT. I thought it was a great car at first...Eco-mode will destroy your engine. If you don't know much about it, it can cause increased carbon buildup. The carbon built up so bad in my car that it ended up misfiring for 6+ months because when taken to the dealer due to power surges, loss of acceleration, & rough idling, their head mechanic didn't notice this. And when I called to complain after the issue was discovered & the fact that they put in the notes that both my tail lights worked on the assessment since it was part of a recall (1 was out when I brought it in & still out when I got home). I was told it was IMPOSSIBLE for my car to be misfiring since there was no trouble codes/no check engine light on. I inquired about an issue with the ECM (computer) & was told it was impossible. Literally issue after issue after issue since then. The carbon buildup was so bad that I can't use ecomode anymore & am told it is best to use premium gas only to prevent further buildup. I got this car because I commute & the hatchback was great for my pets. Costs way too much to fill up & the miles per gallon has gone way down. Literally considering selling it before it explodes on me....DEFINITELY NOT WORTH IT.

Not a 'hot hatch' but a great hatch!
On the smaller size but because of the hatchback, cargo capacity it great. Very reliable and sturdy sedan. Good pick up and enough comfortable space for up to 5 passengers. Sporty looking, good visibility and handles well in all terrains. Not a lot of horsepower or ground clearance due to it being a small sedan.

It is a nice car overall, never had any issues.
Ok for 2 door car if it is just you, not good when you have a baby hard to get a car seat in and out from the back seat. Drives smooth, it is great on gas. I have had the car for almost 6 years and haven't had to do any major work to it. Just kept regular maintenance.

Great starter car for teens.
My car runs super well. I bought it used, but I learned to drive in my mom’s Elantra. We both have one and it has not had any issues. The space is perfect for us and it is affordable too. Gas mileage is nice and it is not too big or too small. It is more spacious up front so perfect for couples or people that do not have kids, but if you are still looking for a sedan I think it’d be a good fit.

My 2013 Hyundai Elantra highlights v.
I like most things about this car. It is comfortable and it has lots of trunk space. The thing I really dislike is the “spoiler” on the back. It really interferes with my visibility. This car also has a look amount of legroom for the driver which is important since I have long legs.

No problems, good performance, good gas mileage, comfortable.Have owned Hyundai in the past and would definitely recommend to anyone in the future. The automobile has very nice looks and is quite roomy with plenty of room in the trunk. It also has a back seat that folds down to allow for more trunk room.

Tinted for Las Vegas lights.
2013 Hyundai Elantra has cruise control and comfortable ride. A/c can be a little “too cold,” so I learned it is idiosyncratic! The trunk space was roomier than I expected. The tires were standard so I did have them changed with upgraded rims. The auto tinting was one of the best to my personal opinion.

My vehicle is very nice I like it a lot.
Good reliable car. Very spacey with good gas mileage and very comfortable. It is a smooth ride and the stock audio sounds amazing. Overall I have never had an issue and would recommend for either single people or people with small family’s as I never have an issue traveling with my nephews in the back seat. Truck space is medium but good enough. Car is not fast by any means but it does not feel slow either.

I call it my little turtle.
It is a small vehicle and decent on gas. You have all the daily necessities a vehicle should have. It is not good on bad weather whatsoever. The vehicle is light so it’ll get stuck in any height of snow or hydroplane through even an inch of water. The maintenance is not too expensive on it and they’re oddly durable so you have to take your good with the bad when it comes to this car.

4dr automatic 2013 Hyundai.
It's a 4dr sedan automatic, perfect for those long car rides the seats cradle your body. Handles very smoothly. It's ok in the snow it's a very light car I don't have snow tires but I think it would handle driving in the snow better with them. It's a very roomy car. My model personally does not have fog lights but next time would. Like it to.

Great space for such a small car - very smooth driving. Overall love it!
I recently purchased my vehicle from a previous owner that did not use it often so the mileage was low. I really enjoy the smooth riding compared to the powerful car I previously used. It is an easy car to drive and I do not have many problems with the brakes or gas. The inside is very comfortable. I would say one of the best things is the amount of space provided for such a small car. I moved into a college apartment with just one trip shoving all my stuff in the car. The only issue I have is the inability to connect an iPhone through a chord for mp3 - though it is not a dire issue. Bluetooth works just fine and phones are still able to be charged.

Hyundai Elantra 7 year review.
This car is very small and has had some problems with it. The biggest is the that the tires will get holes from the inside because the rims and the car are so low. On top of that I have had to replace the breaks a couple times and had a lot of issues with the batteries. I do really like the gas mileage it gets because I travel a lot so that has been a big help.

Some bad but mostly goods.
Bads. 1. Windshield fogs up pretty easy. 2. Sound when using a phone for music is quiet. Performance. It performs pretty well, gets good mileage and gets up to speed pretty quick. It only has 2 doors so it looks pretty sporty, it is a great semi sports car for a high school to college student.

Excellent Elantra that zips around the streets and freeway.
Tire pressure issues every now and again. The car is a 4 cylinder but it drives like it has more horsepower. The handling is really good and the ride inside is smooth. I have an eco boost option which is good while driving on the freeway. The boost option improves fuel performance which saves money on the monthly gas bill.

Reliable. Tough little car.
It is common for the battery in the tire sensor to die at higher mileage. The tire light comes on and stays on. It does not impact anything. Just check your air pressure in your tires like you should. Be doing anyway. I have read this is common on the internet.

Review of Hyundai Elantra good gas, comfortable, good starter car.
I really enjoy this vehicle. I get very good miles to the gallon. It is very comfortable to ride. It gets me to one place to another just fine. It is a really good starter car. It has barely any miles on it for being that old. I plan on using this car until it runs out. I wish I had leather seats but that is something I can get later on in a different car. Adequate small sedan with nice finishes.
Good value. The finishes are nice, but it is disappointing that there's no backup camera (they were mandated in 2014). The wheel base/ weight ratio is terrible. I have had expensive and cheap tires, but, no matter what, I get at least 2 flat tires a year. I have spent thousands on tires. I got a flat tire the first week I had the car running over a pothole that I had run over hundreds of time in my previous car.

I like the features of the car. It is roomy, sunglass holder, nice middle console, child locks for windows, dash has tire lights when tires need checked, more than one plug to charge phones, eco friendly, hands free buttons for radio on steering wheel. Only a couple negatives; car does not like gravel roads, I have to get tires checked every time I travel on them. Back seats do not fold down if I need more room in trunk.

This car does not really have any issues. Regular maintenance keeps the car in good shape and running well. My super cool little car, that is not too small but it is also not very big.
It is relatively small and compared to other bigger cars it takes quite a bit of pressure to get it going on the pedal. It is not great for big families or long trips but other than that it gets the job done. It is great for just me and one other person though. If I was going to travel long distance I would rather just rent a different car. The ac works surprisingly well after all this time so that's nice too I guess.

Hyundai 2013 white Elantra.
I love my car, it's super easy to drive. Feels very light, not heavy at all. I've had it for quite a few years now and has not given me any issues... Very durable car in deed. I also feel very safe in it as it's never failed me, or left me stranded. I would definitely recommend it!

Reliable car average driving experience.
The brakes have been bad since the beginning. It is not very sound or temperature proof. Very loud drive on highways. Gas mileage is pretty good. Reliable car in general. No real problems so far. Temperature control can be sporadic instead of continuous. Relatively comfortable drive.

Hyundai Elantra is definitely a great vehicle.
My Elantra is great from the sound system to front and back heated seats this car is amazing and reliable I worked 45 minutes away from my job and still have not had any issues with this car I also love the Bluetooth audio connection it makes listening to my favorite music more enjoyable it also offers series XM but that tend to be a little more expensive gas is also cheaper usually cost about 20-23$ to fill up my gas tank the limited also offers tinted windows which is great to avoid direct sunlight it is truly a stylish and reliable car.

Long lasting hyundai elantra.
I absolutely love my hyundai elantra. I have put almost 120,000 miles on it, but it still drives so smooth. It has a nice get up and go, and is very comfortable to drive in. I do wish that there was bluetooth in my car - that is the one thing that is really a drawback. But other than that, the speaker quality is great and I love it all! It is done really well for me in the past four and a half years.

Hyundai one of the best cars to ever own.
I have had my Elantra for 8 years now her name is ruby and she has gotten me from point a to point b and she is perfect. I have never had any major issues with her. Hyundai are really good cars and they’re so reliable that I never had to have her in the shop for a long period of time. Even though she has had no major issues I want to replace her and get a newer Hyundai because they are really good cars and they last for a very long time.

It drives more like a short box race car that anything. The handling is great.
No real issues. Sometimes it takes a while to warm up and it hates prolonged cold weather. But it has great mpg and we haven't had any major issues with the engine or transmission. Its reliable and gets us to work on time. It's also great for our animals to ride in safely.

A classic silver beauty car.
I love how sleek the outside of this car is to the comfortable clean fit of the inside. I have owned this car for 10 months and never had an issue! I was worried buying a used car 7 years old but it is been aging well and will continue to do so! I love it has Bluetooth to automatically connect to my phone for jams and handless controls, as well as heated seats for the chilly winter! I only wish it had a rear view camera but overall I love my Hyundai!

Great reliable and spacious Hyundai.
I have had my car for about 5 years and have had minimal to no maintenance needed. I keep up with my tires and change my oil on a regular basis and I have never had any other issues. The car is great on gas and in my state I normally go 1 week without filling up my tank. It's always done great on long distance trips and has been very reliable. There is so Bluetooth system in the car but they do have USB and regular aux ports for phone usage. The car is very spacey in the back seat a lot with a large trunk space.

My vehicle is a Hyundai Elantra 2013 with around 190000 miles.
The vehicle runs very smoothly for having a lot of miles on it. The only issue I have is that the accessories for the car were made cheap and things are falling apart. For example the hangers and mirrors have broken off and the buttons on the steering wheel do not work anymore. My cruise control has also stopped working.
