Nov 16, 2021

The 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 is a full-size truck with a price range of $30,492 to $45,205. It’s more expensive than other trucks in its class, but offers more luxury and technology. The Sierra is targeted at buyers looking for something to help them stand out from the crowd.

The 2016 Sierra 1500 series offers good technology, comfortable seating with a quiet cabin, and long-lasting engine choices.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The suspension is rougher than some of its competitors. The base V6 engine is weak for its size, and the transmission doesn’t shift smoothly.

2016 GMC Sierra 1500: Quick Overview

  • New features for the 2016 model year include an updated infotainment system, a redesigned front bumper with LED lighting, and an upgraded 8-speed transmission paired with the 5.3L engine.
  • Reliability ratings are average according to J.D. Power, with improvements in quality over the 2015 model.
  • Three engines are available. The V6 is the most fuel-efficient option, and the 6.2L V8 tows the most weight.
  • Fuel efficiency is average for its class. Tying for 2nd out of five full-size trucks with a combined rating of up to 20 miles per gallon.
  • Safety is a strong suit for the 2016 Sierra 1500 series compared to other trucks, earning five stars in government crash tests.
  • The 2016 GMC Sierra ranks near the bottom of the full-size truck class based on owner reviews. Ranking low does not mean it’s a bad truck, though, considering it’s competing against much larger and more capable trucks. Overall, it’s a truck built for luxury, making it more expensive than competitors, but aside from the costs, there are no serious downsides.

2016 GMC Sierra the best purchase I have made.
Best vehicle at a great price wouldn't think of any other vehicle. Has the trailer package. With navigation. Rear view camera. Dual climate control and even remote start. The drive is always smooth. And it even is good on gas mileage averaging 20 in the city and 23 on the highway.

It's been perfect from day one. Just cause It's american truck doesn't mean it is not built to a high quality.
I like the appearance, how it drives. I also like the interior with all the comfy amenities. What I don't like is the power. Needs more horsepower.

Like the vehicle but problem.
The big problem is the gas mileage and also the electronic transmission keeps jerking going into 1st gear. I tried to get the dealership to get it done properly and still does not work properly. The computers making it hard sometimes also making me have to reboot the computer by shutting down and sitting for about 5 minutes.

Beautiful 4 door Silver GMC Sierra
I would like to start off with the comfort of my vehicle. My family took it to the beach and it was a dream all the way down to Florida! The driver and passenger can control their own air settings, which is my favorite feature of the truck! It is also extremely spacious with comfy seats. Great stereo system as well! We bought it used and we have had no issues and we are very pleased with the trucks reliability! If buying a truck, I highly recommend the GMC 4 door Sierra! We love ours!

2016 GMC sierra with 8 speed 8L90 transmission problems.
It is a great truck other than the problem with the 8L90 transmission. The torque Converter slips and makes the entire truck shutter while the rpms fluctuate up and down. The truck only has 55 thousand miles on it and the transmission is full of problems that GM doesn't seem to want to fix.

I bought a 2016 GMC SLT crew cab 4wd brand new. At 30k miles i had to replace the cat luckily it was under warranty and now at 79K miles the transmission went out and is not under warranty which is going to cost me 5k to replace.this truck is not used to tow anythink and is used to travel for work. The only off road this truck has seen is a dirt road. I have been reading some blogs and found out GM knows they have a problem with the trans. After i reached out to GM they are giving me the run around. The truck is in the shop now getting the trans replaced. Buyers beware

Transmission problems
Can you say Lemon? I have a 2016 sierra Denali 4WD short bed with the 8 speed trans and 6.2 liter engine. I am a middle aged male that takes care of his truck. I bought this vehicle new. I had the truck probably two-three months. Lane departure camera went out, had to be replaced. Then, at about the one year mark, the truck developed a water leak in the cab break light. I didn't notice until extensive damage had been done. A new headliner down to the carpet had to be replaced, two weeks in the shop. Then the transmission started to shudder (it has never shifted appropriately). Another week-10 days in the shop. Not sure why it takes so long to flush the transmission fluid but the dealer did give me a loaner. Next, I cranked my truck one morning and a lifter was knocking. Another week in the shop and the left bank of lifters replaced. Then not long after the lifters replaced, check engine light comes on. The dealer says that a fuel injector isn't working. Needs replaced and maybe all of them need replacing. Then informs me that fuel injectors AREN'T part of the powertrain (what?? Not part of the powertrain?). Vehicle was just out of basic warranty. The dealer went to bat for me and got the left bank of fuel injectors replaced by GM. My truck is 4 years old with 36,000 miles. I really like the truck but not sure I want to keep it. The dealer has been great. They have given me loaners and always been super helpful. But I am waiting for the wheels to fall off --literally. I definitely wouldn't buy a GM product with the 8 speed transmission. Apparently GM has no plans to rectify the problems with this transmission. Not sure I will buy another GM product, period. Stand behind your mistakes GM.

It stays in the shop for numerous problems. Replaced transmission after having it for only a year. The truck rides very shaky. Gas mileage is awful. I have constant brake and acceleration issues. The truck is not big enough for my family to travel in comfort.

Good flexible pickup. Ride could Be smoother.
Transmission is jerky and finicky. Otherwise a great flexible vehicle. It's a pickup truck. Will get you anywhere and transport almost anything you might need. Can fit 4 people comfortably. I wish it was available with a 10 speed transmission. Good towing capability.

What Problems Does the 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 Have?

The 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 series has fewer complaints compared to previous years. The top problems include nine recalls and rare but severe brake failure, rough shifting.

Transmission problems are the most frequently reported issue, including rough shifts between gears. Dealerships suggest updating the transmission software, but owners have mixed results where the software updates do not fix the shifting issues.

A/C and heater problems are also mentioned by owners. Most common is the A/C system blowing hot air. Usually, it’s caused by a loss of refrigerant in the system, and can indicate a leak that will need to be tracked down.

Engine problems, including a rough idle, are rarely reported. Rough engine idling is frequently caused by misfires, sensor problems, or piston rings. It will take an inspection to diagnose the issues if they happen on your truck.

There are nine recalls affecting the 2016 Sierra 1500, more than average for a truck its age. Recalls include airbags, the audio warning system, upper control arms, vacuum pump brake assist, and software problems with the braking system. The most serious are brake problems since it can increase the risk of an accident.

What are the Prices, Models & Specs?

The 2016 GMC Sierra 1500’s four trims run from tough work truck to luxurious, tricked-out Denali. The 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 series is more expensive than other half-ton trucks, primarily because it’s more luxurious. It’s available used from $30,492 to $45,205, depending on the model and mileage. When new, it had a retail price of $27,815 to $54,640. It’s a truck that has increased in value due to a shortage of full-size trucks in the current market.

  • Base is the entry-level model with keyless entry, AM/FM stereo system with a 4.2-inch screen, cloth bench seating, and a 4.3L V6 engine.
  • SLE is above it in the lineup with power windows & locks, a CD player,17-inch wheels, and USB connectivity.
  • SLT is next in the lineup and comes with the 5.3L V8 engine, leather seating, heated and ventilated front seats, and an upgraded seven-inch infotainment screen.
  • Denali is the flagship model with upgraded leather, front bucket seats, 20-inch chrome wheels, an 8-inch infotainment screen, a magnetic suspension, and additional sound insulation for a more luxurious ride.

What Engine Options are Available?

The 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 engine options include a capable V6, two potent V8s, and a hybrid powertrain. Performance is good in the 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 series. With the 6.2L V8 engine, it’s a quick truck, reaching 60 miles per hour in 5.8 seconds. Towing ratings are good as well, with a maximum capacity of 12,000 pounds depending on cabin configuration.

  • The base engine is a 4.3L V6 with 285 horsepower and 305 lb.-ft. of torque.
  • Above that is the 5.3L V8 engine making 355 horsepower and 383 lb.-ft. of torque.
  • The flagship engine is the 6.2L V8 engine producing 420 horsepower and 460 lb.-ft. of torque.

What Colors Options are Available?

How Big is the Sierra 1500?

The 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 series is a full-size truck. It’s similar in size to other half-ton trucks including the Ford F-150 and Chevy Silverado 1500. Three cab options are available including a two-door regular cab, 2.5-door double cab, and full four-door crew cab. The double cab has room for five people, but rear legroom is tight. If you know you’ll be carrying passengers, the crew cab is the best choice since it fits adults comfortably in the rear seats. Three bed lengths are also available including a five-foot eight-inch bed, six-foot six-inch bed, and an eight-foot bed.

Centered wide dash shot

How Does the 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 Compare to Other Trucks?

The 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 series ranks 12th out of 14 full-size pickup trucks based on owner reviews. At the top of the class is the GMC Sierra 2500HD. The 2500 series is similar to the 1500 series, but is larger and more capable of towing with its optional diesel engine. A larger cabin in the 2500 series also has more passenger room compared to the 1500 series. Where the 1500 series wins out is that it’s more affordable and easier to live with, fitting in most garages and parking spaces. If you need a truck that can tow construction and farm equipment, the 2500 is a better choice, but if you want a daily driver, the 1500 series is the winner.

Another rival is the Toyota Tundra, which is close in price to the Sierra 1500. Where Toyota wins out is with a longer-lasting powertrain, and a more comfortable suspension. The GMC has better technology with a more up-to-date infotainment system, can tow more, and has better interior materials. Overall, between the two trucks, it comes down to what you need to do. If you want a long-lasting daily driver, the Tundra is a better option, if you know you’ll need to tow and want more luxury, the GMC wins.

Based on 120 owner reviews and research from 11 automotive and government websites, we conclude yes, the 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 series is a good truck. The Sierra is a more luxurious version of the Chevy Silverado 1500 series with a refined interior, and the 6.2L engine offers excellent towing capabilities. Downsides include higher ownership costs than other trucks, and transmission problems where it shifts roughly between gears. Overall, if you’re in the market for a half-ton truck, the Sierra 1500 is a good choice if you want more luxury.

Vibration at 75 m.p.h. Inside the 1500 GMC 2016 Truck With 106,000 miles
The vibration starts at 75 m.p.h. And continues the faster you go. Three tire companies have sold me different tires, saying a tire was out of round, one time. After tires were replaced and rotated and balanced 3 times with no improvement. The three tire companies all have said "GMC 2016 (1500) truck have an issue with vibration, problem is in the rear end of the truck (rear end or the driveshaft}". Has anyone else had or having vibration in their 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 truck at 70 - 75 m.p.h.?

Highly recommended GMC sierra.
The GMC sierra 1500 is a very quiet and smooth riding truck. It has been very dependable. It gets great gas mileage for having the 5.3 engine. I have owned this truck since new 4 years ago and all I have had to do is put tires on it. The GMC has exceptional quality and the features it came with are outstanding. I would highly recommend the GMC sierra to anyone looking for a new truck. It's nice, powerful, and the price was on point compared to other models.

Comfortable and reliable truck.
Love my 2016 GMC sierra, I drive it daily and haven't had any issue. Comfort to drive, decent fuel mileage for a truck. My commute to work is long and I am not worried about breaking down. For projects around the house, hauling material is not an issue even with the shorter bed. I would definitely recommend this or a similar year GMC to anyone in the market for a truck. 2016 GMC sierra. Reliable. Hard working. Stylish.
My truck currently has 58,000 miles and the only real problem I have had so far is that my a/c has had to be recharged once. As for comfort I wish that it had a bigger back seat but other than that is pretty nice. The back up camera is a very nice touch along with the tailgate drop assist. It is seen snow rain and everything in between and handled it quite well. Performance wise it has the 5.3 v8 which does not get the best gas mileage and does not have the best towing ability but it can get up and go when it needs to.

This truck rides very comfortable and the heater and air conditioning work really well. I t get good mileage for a truck and is rugged enough to haul trash to the dump but stylish enough to go on a date or to go to church on Sunday. The bed of the truck has footsteps to make it easier to get into.

Problems starting to occur 26000 miles
I chose the GMC Sierra Denali because of the looks and comfort. I was proud of my purchase lots of compliments. Looks can be decieving. About three months ago I noticed water inside the vehicle, driver side floor compartment. I didn't think to much about until it happened again and then again. I took it to the dealership several times and was told it was the satellite antenna so it was replaced and resealed. It happened again so I returned it again. This time I was told it was the sunroof. I was told it was resealed and was fixed. It happened yet again. I am due to take it back yet another time. This week I've noticed, along with increased water in the floor, that the brake lights are remianing on causingthe battery to drain. The brake lights come on automatically when parked for several hours. Another issue that is coming up is shifting hard when stopping at a stop light. When the light turnes green and the accelerator is pressed it pauses and then thrust forward. I've never owned a GMC much less a Denali. I've worked extremely hard to be able to purchase such a vehicle. This was an investment for me, one that I am slowly regretting.

Great truck, nice AWD mode built in, extremely reliable.
I love my GMC sierra. I previously had an all wheel drive Subaru and love that gm has an AWD function built in. I feel very safe knowing that AWD will keep my truck from sliding on patches of ice. I have the double cab version which is nice for me, but could be somewhat small for a family with older children (more than 12 years old). My truck has been extremely reliable with no major issues. The only issue that comes to mind is when my truck is in 4WD or AWD mode it chirps. Not sure if this is normal but is kind of obnoxious although I have come to get use to it after the winter months hit. I have the all terrain package with the sled. It is nice to have both leather and cloth, although I have covered up all seats with seat covers. I do wish gm would offer front seat covers. But all in all it is a great truck, that I plan to have more than 8 years as a primary vehicle.

The 2016 GMC sierra is the best pickup truck I have owned. It is luxurious and comfortable, nice touch points throughout the cabin. Makes a bold statement on the road. The infotainment is super easy to use and navigate. The 5.3l v8 has ample power to make towing our travel trailer a breeze. The integrated trailer brake works like a charm. Descent control helps slow the truck down on steep declines. Cylinder deactivation system works seem less to help you achieve better mileage. It is great for a base model. Honestly wouldn't ask for more than what I it has. The back up camera does come in handy when backing into small spaces.

Pros and cons of the 2016 GMC sierra.
Nice vehicle, descent on gas mileage. Very light for the size. Plenty of power for this size truck. Perfect for towing loads under 11000 pounds. Switches from 8 cylinder to 4 cylinder when cruising which is what helps on the gas mileage. One regret is that all the necessities in the truck are very basic with no built in Wi-Fi.

The 2016 GMC Denali is such a wonderful buy. Offering comfort to all who buy.
It is a great vehicle. It has heated and cooled seats, leather interior, widescreen display for the radio with Sirius XM and rear cameras. It has sensors all around to prevent crashes and handsfree music capabilities. I could keep listing extras. This truck is luxurious and comfortable. It is like driving on a cloud. It is spacious with room for the whole family.

It drives like a car with the toughness of a truck.
My truck drives and rides like a car in terms of turning, taking on bumps, etc. The cab is very quiet.

It is dependable! It is reliable! It is fuel efficient for a truck.
I love the style of my truck. I love the fuel economy of my truck. I love the reliability of my truck.

My 2016 GMC sierra pros and cons.
Love the truck.. Wish I had gotten leather. 4 to 8 cylinder is a bit odd to get used to. Have three large tow review mirrors. They look epic on truck but are very big and limit vitality. Has bed liner that looks like spray in Linux which is pretty slick.

Used to have chrome all over it but now it is all blacked out.
I absolutely love my truck. I have always wanted a GMC sierra but they have always been on the higher priced side so I never thought it would actually happen. Well I came across this beauty a few months ago and with the price of 35000 out the door I have been beyond happy with it. I have noticed whoever had it before me did a tune which lets me get the top speed up to 125 mph instead of the factory governor of 98mph. Very powerful and beautiful truck all the way around,

Transmission is c**p
I bought a 2016 GMC SLT crew cab 4wd brand new. At 30k miles i had to replace the cat luckily it was under warranty and now at 79K miles the transmission went out and is not under warranty which is going to cost me 5k to replace.this truck is not used to tow anythink and is used to travel for work. The only off road this truck has seen is a dirt road. I have been reading some blogs and found out GM knows they have a problem with the trans. After i reached out to GM they are giving me the run around. The truck is in the shop now getting the trans replaced. Buyers beware

GMC still makes a great truck.
It has been a great and reliable truck to own it gets great gas mileage and has never left me stranded. It has good room in the interior lots of cup holders towing is good and payload is good as well. Pulls my boat well and the gas mileage when towing is good as well.

My vehicle has the luxury details that some higher end brand cars have.
The only issue I have is my passenger door does not lock or unlock when pushing the button on my keys or door. The truck drives great and gets decent mpg for a v8 truck. I have very bright lights that help me see at night. The seats are heated and cooled as well.

Spacious trucks with a great look.
I love it. The gas mileage is nice and it is very spacious. I take naps in the back seat during my lunch breaks. Only thing I wish I could change is there be air vents on the back of the center console for the people in the back seat. Other than that I have no issues with my truck at all.

It is high off the ground. Running boards are needed for shorter people.
The look and handling. Wish it had satellite radio.

My truck the life and times.
Good on gas and good to tow with nice rims. Nice paint. Don't like the full synthetic oil cost a lot to change. Lots of recalls I live in a small town and have to drive to the city for any service. Back seat is small ok for kids that's about it. The bed lights are nice when out camping.
