VehicleHistory Image
likeFilled The Good
The Sierra has a more luxurious interior with higher-quality materials than other full size trucks, powerful V8 engine choices available, and a quieter cabin than the competition.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The base V6 engine is very weak for a full size truck, the turning radius is much larger than other full size trucks, and the suspension is firm for the class.

Comfort and utility in one.
I really enjoy this vehicle. It is my daily driver, so I am in it quite a bit. It is roomy enough in the cab that passengers do not feel cramped, but we're still able to have the utility of the truck bed. We have no problem taking off for a road trip because there’s plenty of space and they seats are extremely comfortable. We've only had minor issues with the truck that happen with normal wear and tear. Nothing major has gone out or been a problem.

I have found the four wheel drive very useful.
I have found the vehicle to be very reliable. I am pretty rough on it too lots of road trips and off roading to get to camp sites. And the only problem I have ever had put if it is the traction control computer gets kind of fickle in heats above ninety degrees other than that it is been a fantastic truck and I love it.

Great comfortable ride with this vehicle.
Very comfortable to drive, very reliable, low maintenance cost of ownership. Plenty of interior space for an entire family to ride, plenty of space to store or carry items in the bed. Great towing ability to move whatever you need to. Convenient features of interior.

Very dependable GMC sierra!
My vehicle is very reliable. I have not had any problems. The 4 wheel drive feature has really confused. E in handy when the roads get icy. The air conditioner blows really hard and cold. When I need it the v8 gives me the power needed to get up to speed quickly.

An Amazing truck, never gives up
Our truck is awesome and comfortable, it has enough room for our daughter and 3 dogs. Drives real smooth, no problems at all, engine is amazing. Really good on gas and even when it's on E the gas lasts for a bit too. We will never switch vehicles, this is the best one than the others that we had

I have leather, bells & whistles along with the smooth ride.
I have not had any problems with my truck. Absolutely love it as it is such a smooth, quiet ride. This truck is just as luxurious as any expensive, high end car on the market yet it is practical in that it can haul anything I need when I need it. GMC makes great automobiles.

High mileage, no loss of power.
Vehicle has over 120,000 miles on it and have not experienced any major maintenance issues. Vehicle was purchased for tow package and even though increased miles have not experienced power loss, even on hilly terrain. Have a family of five and can is large and spacious allowing for comfort for all occupants.

My truck. Confront and all the power I need.
Everything is great, except that the park assist keeps shutting down. The ride is comfortable, gas mileage isn't the best, the v8 engine has more power than I know what to do with. Its has everything on it, heated and cool seats, moonroof, leather interior, power window and rear slider, memory sets for 2 people.

Basically my car is messed to many complications.
I do not like my truck because it is to big for me. And I am short my car came with a lot of complications such as already needing a oil change. My breaks are messed up paint chipping and many more. I want to get my car repainted so it can look better than what it is now.

Paint issues
Dash board cracked at 20,000 miles. Replaced under warranty . Cracked again at 50,000 same spot. Front brakes had a hydraulic leak at 50,000.Electric seat (drivers side) quit working, replaced motor at 60,000. Paint peeling at 60,000 in 4 different spots. Two places on the roof ,drivers side quarter panel, front hood. This will be the LAST GM I ever waste my money on.

GMC sierras are not worth the money.
Both door handles have fallen off, handles horribly, consistently jumps gears. I wouldn't recommend this year and trim package to anyone. If you are looking for a good truck this vehicle is not it. Spend a little more money and get a Chevy I have not had any issues with any Chevys I have owned.
accountCircle Valerie K
The back seats fold up for if you need more room for bigger packages and stuff.
It is alright, seems to have a lot of problems with the dash lights coming on often and the tires make for a rough ride. It does have plenty of room for passengers though. Being a truck it uses more gas than I would like it to, also only has manual windows which is a chore.
accountCircle Devin A
Over all a decent vehicle it was an impulse buy.
Oil pressure sensor and oil pump issues, abs sensor and stabilitrak and traction control always go off when it rains.
accountCircle Mary S
Worth the money. Will probably last a while.
Check engine light keeps coming back on even after several trips to dealer. The tire pressure light also comes on frequently despite having the tires checked regularly. Other than that the truck is dependable and has served me well. I would definitely look into purchasing another one.

What Problems Does the 2012 GMC Sierra 1500 Have?

The 2012 GMC Sierra 1500 series has fewer problems than other full size trucks on the market. There are also a lower number of owner complaints compared to both the 2011 and 2013 models.

Excessive oil consumption is the most common problem. In some cases the oil consumption is normal for the engine, and in others replacing the oil pump valve cover is necessary. A replacement costs about $300 depending on local labor rates.

Interior problems, including cracks in the dashboard, are another complaint from owners. Usually if the truck is parked outside, the heating and cooling will cause the dash to expand and contract, leading to cracks. Replacing the dash for about $1,000 is one way to solve the problem, or you can purchase a dash cover for $75 to $100.

Electrical system problems, such as stabilizer failures, are also mentioned, but are rarer than the other complaints. Replacing the steering wheel position sensor solves the problem, costing about $400.

There are 5 recalls, which is better than other full size trucks from the same era. The recalls include the transfer pump, ignition lock actuator, fire extinguisher, and air bags. Most serious is the oil transfer pump since a failure can cause the engine to stall.

Awesome truck for 12 years.
Our GMC sierra is a street performance package and it is amazing! We have had this car for 8 years now (bought in 2012) and it has held up exceptional well. The only things we are seeing is that after awhile the leather starts to get a little worn away and the door handles on every single door have broken due to it being cheap plastic. Luckily my husband is a mechanic and can fix these problems but if it was just me, I would not have been able to replace them without taking it in to get repaired.
accountCircle Daniel M on June 14, 2021
Overall the truck is satisfying.
The handling of the vehicle could be improved. The suspension system seems very rigid. The vehicle rarely has issues mechanically. Most of the issues I have with the vehicle are minor cosmetic or comfort related issues. Overall, I like my vehicle and plan to keep it for many more years.

A very reliable vehicle and GMC makes a fantastic truck!
I have not had any issues with my vehicle so far. It is a reliable vehicle and produced by a great manufacturer. I would recommend getting the vehicle I have to anyone. It is a four wheel drive pickup which is great for all seasons of the year. The engines are very good and can withstand plenty of abuse.

Dedicated to my everyday truck.
I like the seats and how comfortable they are as well as the reliability of the truck. The ride can be a bit rough but the truck has constantly started and got me where I am going for many years now and I am very happy about that. The gas mileage is fair but the payload is enormous and the 4 wheel drive is great too.

Sierra - great value for the price!
Great sight lines. Lots of room and comfortable. Best high powered beams! Sturdy. Great load capacity in bed. Good mileage on highways. Love the backup feature in mirror. Easy to reach console buttons. Good speakers. Biggest drawback is turn angle is rather wide making it hard to park in narrow lots.

It is been a super reliable truck so far. I have worked it pretty hard being in construction. Gas mileage is great since it shuts down to v4 in low rpms. I recently have a fuel pump seal had a leak that needs to be fixed but otherwise it has been great.

GMC 1500 - a power packed plaything.
The only bad things are recalls. One for airbags and a computer system. Many positives are found in the truck. I like that it is a great style inside & out. The ride is smooth with the z71 package and the seats are all comfy. The stereo is great as well. I have the 5.3 v8 engine and it gets the job done. The 4 wheel drive will allow you to go almost anywhere except the ice which you shouldn't travel on anyway.

This is a great vehicle and it is always ran perfectly. I have changed the spark plugs one time but it did have 115000 miles on it. The Onyx Black paint is very gorgeous in the sunlight with chrome accents.
Overall this truck is reliable. It does everything I want it to do. It could be a little more comfortable and future models followed up on that. I have had zero issues. Something I will point out though is I highly recommend the 2007-2013 5.3L engines should be tuned to take the AFM (Active Fuel Management) out. This causes premature wear and tear on your cams and will cause catastrophic engine failure at 100,000 miles or less. I thankfully had my truck tuned at 40,000 miles and hopefully won't have any issues. I have only had 1 serious warning and that was to service the 4 wheel drive. Simply putting the truck in 4HI and letting it cycle in 4WD will do the trick. Just needs the cobwebs blown out of it. Also ever since I have bought the truck it always tells me my washer fluid is low. These sensors were notorious for going bad on these trucks and are very difficult to replace. Other than that I have zero complaints about this product. As with all the GM Vehicles I have owned they always perform as advertised even when they have 200,000 miles on them. Let me tell you they can take a beating. Yes they are pricey brand new but they are a vehicle you can pass down to the next generation. Will only buy GM.

I still like my gmc sierra truck. It is 9 years old. I use my truck for both carrying product and towing. As for things that I have replaced were: the right front bearing. It is the first time I have had to replace one. To me, this should not have happened. I have also purchased a new drivers side seat cover. I haven't replaced it yet. No cabin air filters - airflow sensors problems
I have a continuous problem with the mass airflow sensor in my vehicle, which causes fuel problems. This has been ongoing since I purchased the vehicle 3 years ago. It also does not have cabin air filters which is very annoying. Had I known this at the time of purchase I would not have followed through. The gears in this particular vehicle are slow and the truck has no go off the gate. RPMs rev up extremely high when trying to pick up speed. Very comfortable to drive in, and is very reliable when not having airflow sensors issues.

The one most important thing people should know about the truck is that it's flex fuel so it can take E85 gasoline which is cheaper than regular gas.

The White Knight of pickup trucks always there to save the day
My GMC Sierra 1500 SLE is a relatively reliable, versatile, economic truck in terms of those expectations I hold for pickup trucks. It helps me accomplish many demanding tasks such as hauling heavy loads over long distances of varying grade without any detected issues. It can also stand up to the demands of being consistently driven short distances throughout the day as would be required by a typical yard maintenance crew. I have had several small scale problems with it in the past but not unusual and nothing outrageously expensive/unexpected.

Love the GMC sierra for its versatility, towing capacity and comfortable drive.
I love this truck; it has a great towing capacity and is a very smooth ride. The gas mile is not great but it average for a 4x4 truck. I have had some issues with replacing the brakes and upper control arms. It is a very durable truck. I have used mine as a daily drive, farm/work truck, and for long haul drivers. It has been a great truck and I highly recommend the GMC sierra.

Comfortable, smooth, highway gas efficient.
I love my truck. It may take a lot to fill the tank, but then if you go on long trips (I. E. 5+ hours), you do not have to fill it! We go on 12-14 hour trips once a year and only have to fill once. It is comfortable for a family of 4, has SiriusXM, 2 cigarette lighters (4 USB imports for us). It is a super smooth ride.

Leather seats and 4 wheel drive.
Only problems I have had is oil pressure switch and front wheel bearings. I love the power of the 5.3 liter v8 engine. The crew cab space is very comforting. Even with crew cab I am still left with plenty of room in the bed of the truck. I would recommend a sierra.
