2005 Ford Escape Review: There are Better SUVs Out There, but Few Better Deals

Gilbert Smith

The 2005 Ford Escape is comfortable enough, powerful enough, fuel-efficient enough, and roomy enough for the price, starting at under four grand. It’s not hard to find a better compact SUV, but you’ll have to look far and wide to find one at a better price.

Front angle medium view.
likeFilled The Good
The best 2005 SUV for the price, the 2005 Ford Escape is moderately comfortable, roomy, powerful, and fun to drive.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The back row can get a bit cramped for more than two adults, and there are some major issues with premature rust in the subframe and suspension.

Is the 2005 Ford Escape a Good Used Car?

  • Overall Rating 7/10 – The truth is that the 2005 Ford Escape is kind of mediocre. There’s nothing really wrong with the SUV, but there’s nothing really excellent about it, either.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 6/10 – Rear hip room can comfortably seat two adults, there’s enough cargo space for most road trips, and suspension is smooth. But you’ve got to take a point away based on the potential for early corrosion in the struts and shocks.
  • Reliability 8/10 – Premature rust is the only major maintenance issue you need to worry about.
  • Safety 7/10 – Crash test ratings are solid and safety technology, though dated by now, is decent for 2005.
  • Gas Mileage 7/10 – The 2005 Ford Escape averages 22/25 miles to the gallon, city/highway, in the base model. The high-end Limited averages 20/25 miles to the gallon at 200 horsepower. There are more efficient compact SUVs out there, but the Escape’s not bad.
  • Value 8/10 – The 2005 Ford Escape is a decent SUV at a very good price. Low cost of ownership helps to sweeten the deal, with decent fuel economy, few major repair issues to look out for, and a quarter million mile life expectancy.

It has plenty of room so you can shop and put the items in the back and not worry about it getting wet if it rains like it would in a truck
I like the style and gas mileage I get with this SUV. I would love to have a new one but that's not in our budget. It's perfect for my family which is my husband and our service dog so it gives him room to move around freely if needed

The sport option is amazing! Helps in different road condition.
My car has been the best source of transportation for the last 6 years now. In all condition the weather throws at us my car can handle it all. If you keep up with maintenance your car will keep up with you.

Enjoy the drive in a Ford Escape.
The ability to carry large items in the lift back, the seats are comfortable and easy to get in and out without sitting to low. I like being able to sit higher while driving. The gas mileage is not as much as a bigger SUV yet we have most of the advantages, I like being able to lay all or a section of the back seats down for more hauling space.

It is durable and Ford makes very reliable vehicles.
I do not have any room for complaints with my vehicle. I love it. Very much. It is comfortable, safe and reliable.

It is it an all wheel drive SUV. It is silver and perfect for my short height.
I like the shape of my vehicle, it allows me to see well out of the sides of the front windshield. I like that the seat is adjustable up and down, as I am very short. I like that it sits up high on the road. I like the durability, as we have had minimal problems.

2005 ford escape. This is a SUV and easy to drive in and out of traffic.
I find my vehicle hard to steer because I recently broke both shoulders. I did not have a problem prior to then. I find my vehicle just the right size for me, it is comfortable and reliable. It has all the features I need such as remote control side mirror controls, fog lights, abs brakes. I use a rollator for mobility and it fits easily in the storage area behind the seats.

Absolutely love that the seats flip down flat so my dogs can lay down on them.
Absolutely love my basic Ford escape. The seats flip down in the back so I can take my dogs to my parents house to run. It stops on a dime and runs like a charm. I have not had any major issues wrong with my car.

It's a great vehicle! The newer models look & drive more like a car.
I like that it's a small suv yet still feels more like a truck than a car

Danger
Car currently has 65k miles on it. As I was driving home I came upon a red traffic light. Soon as I hit the brakes my brake pedal sank all the way down and the car did not stop. I quickly pumped the brakes and pressed down as hard as I could. The car very slightly began to stop, however I passed the traffic light. Luckily I was not in an accident, nor did I cause an accident. I carefully pulled over, turned the car off and checked for any leaks or damage. I found none. After about 5 minutes I turned the car back on and it worked good as new. The next day I carefully took it to the closest mechanic. There was no dash light on at all and the car gave no error codes. I continued to drive it in high alert and about 2 weeks later it happened again. Brakes stopped functioning. Car is a real danger to drive. Had it happened while I was in the highway I most likely would not have been so lucky.

The alarm system is not reliable and should be taken out to avoid annoyance.
The alarm system goes off if I lock the door after 15 minutes. It has very low MPG in the city and the interstate.

It has a great sense of comfort. Very easy to drive and if you need to go fast and quickly you can!
It is a stable vehicle. It get a me from point a to point b. It is not good on gas at all, it is very reliable but also expensive on gas. It's a comfortable car and is a great first car choice!

It is held up for a long time. I trust it because it is an SUV.
Brakes are terrible, rust, one door will not unlock. I have had this car for a long time and it only started to fall apart after I paid it off.

High up and I can see the road.
The car is great but the transmission is shot so I need a new one. Love how I can see from a high up vehicle. The vehicle was a replacement for my 07 Ford Escape that died in an accident and does not have the same bells and whistles that the 07 had but it does get me from point A to point Be although not so much anymore because of the transmission.

3 catalytic converters, what for?
It's a nice SUV. Seat warmers would be nice. Doesn't need 3 catalytic converters, that makes it very expensive to smog. Hard to do self repairs.

What Do Critics Say About the 2005 Ford Escape?

Consumer Reports found the 2005 Ford Escape to be an improvement on the 2001 model, being more comfortable, quieter, safer, and more agile, but with less grip, longer braking distance, and lower maximum speed.

Kelley Blue Book users give the 2005 Ford Escape a strong 88% recommendation, praising the SUV’s longevity, its powerful engines, and even the easy-cleaning interior. Drivers were less enthusiastic about the loud engine, and some peeling paint and rust dents after twenty years on the road.

Edmunds liked the 2005 Escape’s powerful V6 engine, the generous cargo capacity, the comfortable interior, and the carlike handling. They didn’t like the i4 models as much, and found the interior materials a bit cheap.

What Common Problems Does the 2005 Ford Escape Have?

456 of the 2005 Escape’s 1,572 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration complaints are for structural issues. The major issue here is severe rust in the subframe. This is most common in states with cold winters, where you’ll be exposed to more road salt, but a coating of anti-rust spray is a good idea wherever you’re buying.

The rust issues extend to the suspension, where there are 486 complaints on file. Major external rust might not always be visible, but you will hear clanking sounds as you go over bumps. Make sure to check the suspension on your test drive.

If you can avoid the worst of the rust problems, engine and powertrain complaints are few. If you allow the rust to settle in, you could have the transmission falling out before you reach 200,000 miles.

The 2005 Ford Escape has 5 recalls on file with the NHTSA, which is within reason for an SUV of this age. But, 1,572 complaints is a lot.

How Long Will the 2005 Ford Escape Last?

Drivers report that a Ford Escape can last up to 250,000 with regular maintenance. Assuming that you don’t have to deal with any premature corrosion, you can expect to reach at least 200,000 before you see any major repairs, with 250,000 being a typical life expectancy.

RepairPal report an annual maintenance cost of around $600. The most expensive common fix is a new exhaust manifold, starting at around $1,070.

accountCircle Crystal D

It is very reliable. I have had routine maintenance done including tires. I had to replace a rod when I first bought the vehicle but that is about it.

accountCircle Lindeey B

Yes. Sometimes my steering wheel locks for no reason before I drive. The key buttons also do not work sometimes.

accountCircle Abe G

It is very reliable, the only issue it has is with the air conditioner. Even after it was replaced, it is still seems weak.

accountCircle Dylan G

Yes it is reliable and the engine, transmission, ac is all messed up but it still runs, it also shakes a little bit.

accountCircle Cee F

Current it needs a transmission rebuild and it also needs to have the ignition system and coils replaced.

accountCircle Carrie D

Yes it is reliable. The only problem I have had is rust that went thru the frame and so we had to weld some metal on it and put the back struts back on.

accountCircle Beverly G

It is very reliable. The only problem it currently has is that a transmission sensor needs to be replaced but I am waiting till I get paid to have that replaced. But I am still able to drive my car.

accountCircle Travis P

Pretty reliable haven't had any real major problems with just minor issues which could have been avoided if they would have used better parts.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology in the 2005 Ford Escape is pretty good, considering the vehicle’s age. You’ve got a CD player as a standard feature and a 6-disc changer in the high-end models. No MP3 players though.

Safety technology is pretty good for 2005. You’ve got full dual-stage airbags with occupant sensors, and anti-lock brakes. Dated, sure, but not necessarily a given in 2005.

Is the 2005 Ford Escape a Good Value?

The 2005 Ford Escape is a pretty good value. The entry-level XLS is typically priced at around $3,420, while the high-end Limited is priced at about $4,597.

Cost of ownership is low, with the SUV getting decent mileage and not being too expensive to keep running. These models were priced with under 160,000 miles on the odometer, so you should have anywhere from 50,000 to 100,000 miles left on the original transmission.

What are the Different Models of the 2005 Ford Escape?

Not counting the Hybrid Escape, which is marketed and sold as its own vehicle, the 2005 Ford Escape is sold in three trim levels from the base XLS to the high-end Limited.

With the entry-level XLS you’re getting:

  • Cloth seating
  • Remote keyless entry
  • Manual air conditioning
  • CD player
  • Power windows and door locks

The mid-range XLT adds:

  • Premium cloth seating
  • Fog lights
  • 6-way power adjust driver seat
  • 6-disc CD changer

What Engines Come In the 2005 Ford Escape?

  • The base engine in the 2005 Ford Escape is a 2.3L inline-four delivering 152 lb.-ft. of torque and 153 horsepower. The engine is paired to a 4-speed automatic transmission, it’s configured in front/four wheel drive, and it averages 22/25 miles to the gallon.
  • Limited editions are equipped with a 3.0L V6 engine delivering 200 horsepower and 193 lb.-ft. of torque. This is paired to a 4-speed automatic, configured in front/four wheel drive, and averages 20/25 miles to the gallon.

What Colors Does the 2005 Ford Escape Come In?

How Comfortable Is the 2005 Ford Escape?

The 2005 Ford Escape is fairly comfortable. With 49 inches of rear hip room you’ve got enough space for a couple adults in the back row, or three kids. The suspension rides smooth and the seating is nice and firm.

Your biggest concern is going to be premature corrosion in the suspension. Once the rust settles in it’s effectively impossible to fix, but it’s easy to prevent with a coating of anti-rust spray.

How Much Storage Space Does the 2005 Ford Escape Have?

The 2005 Escape starts off with 29 cubic feet of space in the rear, and that can extend to 66 cubic feet with the seats folded down. There are larger compact SUVs out there, like the CR-V and Chevy Equinox, but this should be enough space for anything you can expect to carry in a crossover.

Centered wide dash shot

What Are the Differences Between Years?

2005 was the fifth model year in the Ford Escape’s 1st Generation, which ran from 2001 to 2007.

2002: The Limited trim made its debut in 2002.

2003: Ford remodeled the interior for 2003, and they introduced two-tone cabin color schemes.

2004: Airbags and seatbelts were redesigned for 2004, and the front bumper was redesigned.

2005: The i4 trims were paired with automatic transmission options for 2005.

2006: Ford offered i4 engines in the XLT for the first time in 2006.

2007: Ford were phasing the 1st Generation Escape out at this point, so there were no major changes in 2007 beyond some new appearance packages.

How Does the 2005 Ford Escape Compare to the Competition?

Year after year, the Honda CR-V is pretty much the best overall compact SUV on the market, and 2005 was no exception. 2005’s CR-V was more nimble, more comfortable, roomier, and more efficient than the Ford Escape. It also costs anywhere from one to two thousand dollars more than a comparable Escape.

The 2005 Subaru Forester is a little more powerful than the Escape at the entry level, and a little less fuel efficient, but you probably won’t notice the difference on the test drive. The Forester averages a few hundred dollars more than a comparable Escape.

There are faster, stronger, more efficient, and roomier compact SUVs on the market than the 2005 Ford Escape, but, for this model year, it might be the best SUV you’re going to find for under four grand.

2005 Ford Escape XLT
I bought the car with 115K miles on it December 2020. It is now June 2021 and the mileage is at 126k. The only problem I have is rust on both sides with rocker panels and behind the rear wheel panels. I really like this car better than my new Pacifica. It is mostly a work car but has been reliable. I plan to keep it going as long as I can.

2005 Ford Escape-Bought Used. Reliable and Safe as long as upkeep is maintained.
I bought my car used in 2016. After some minor repairs, such as a constant oil smell, it ran very reliably for 2 years. I had a 20 minute commute to work, and the gas mileage on the highway was reasonable. I also felt very safe travelling with my children, due to the size and safety reviews. General upkeep was minimum until an issue started where it stalls at stop signs/lights and sometimes dies. This is still being worked on. I would recommend this vehicle if you have a trustworthy mechanic.

I absolutely love my car and would recommend it to anyone. It has done well performance wise, it is always very reliable and has never let me down. It is very comfortable and roomy. Extremely reliable as long as I take care with maintenance. I have had very little engine trouble. I like the size and the handling with enough room to spread out. Good trunk size and like the sunroof. Paint is peeling from the roof and the front of the hood, but is likely normal wear and tear.

A nice gramma's car. Not your normal gramma car.
One thing that I have had problems with is the alternator, I have replaced it twice. I like the roominess, the fact that I can fit two car seats and a third child in the backseat. I can fit a lot of stuff in the back when I go camping, shopping, etc. I wouldn't mind having a different color, there needs to be more colors to choose from. Even though it is only a four speed it still does have some get up and go.

Ford's Small SUV is not top-notch
I bought this car from my son and it's a decent car that gets me to work and home but you can hear a lot of road noise and it kind of rattles. This is not cheap on gas. Being a small SUV. Our gas prices in central Illinois are around $2.69 and from a quarter tank to three-quarters tank is around $20.

The car is reliable, comfortable, and sleek. It is small enough to park just about anywhere comfortably while large enough to fit the family. Roomy reliable small SUV.
My tan 2005 ford escape is the best vehicles I have ever owned. It has 4 wheel drive and all the room of a bigger SUV but is still small enough it does not use a lot of gas. The 6 CD changer is great for long trips and the sunroof is perfect for the lovely spring days. The pm the steering wheel controls for cruise control os convenient and safer option. The downside is there is a significant rusty area under gas tank which seems to be common for year and model. The plastic on bumper and down the sides fades and cracks if you don't regularly keep oiled up.

Silver, 4dr SUV that I found to be a reliable daily driver. Good on gas, typically taking 20$ to fill up from 1/2 a tank. Cloth seats that stayed warm in the winter and cool in spring/summer. Has cruise control, power windows, multi-disc CD player, two 12v adaptors, and is equipped with anti-theft. The back opens up two ways - just the window and the whole door with separate handles for both. The trunk is very roomy, and even has a cover to hide anything you put back there and leave it. Unfortunately, it is not removable so if you have anything large you want to put back there, it makes it difficult to work around sometimes. Only issue I have with it is the back windshield wiper is so small that it clears off just a tiny spot that it is almost useless, and I don't like that the car alarm doesn't go off when someone pulls the handle while it is on - it apparently will only go off after it has already been broken into which I find kind of silly.

3 catalytic converters, what for?
It's a nice SUV. Seat warmers would be nice. Doesn't need 3 catalytic converters, that makes it very expensive to smog. Hard to do self repairs.

My Ford Escape gets me there.
My Ford Escape has a very shaky steering wheel, however it does not affect its driving quality. For being a smaller vehicle it has a good amount of room. The seats are comfortable and can adjust fine to your liking. The center console is quite small but their is other storage places that make up for it.

12 month old twin hauler!
As a short person (4'10') I find this vehicle to be tankish despite being smaller than other SUVs. For it's age, it has helped up very nicely. This car was is important for us since we have 12 month old twins. I wish it got better gas mileage (25+/- mpg).

2005 Ford Escape XLT review.
I really love my car! It is the perfect size for me, I am a full time college student and it is not too big or too small. My dad is a mechanic so he has had to fix a few things but it is a good car. He's fixed some rust, the steering stabilizer, the power windows, and the wheel axial. I find it to be very reliable as long as you take good care and keep up on maintenance.

Reliable comfortable and utilitarian
My Ford Escape has been the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned. Bought it with 60,000 miles on it now has 150, 000 miles and no major repairs. Great in snow and ice here in the northeast. Comfortable ride have done many long road trips in it. Has ample room to carry stuff and seats fold down easily to accommodate.

It is extremely reliable.
We bought our Ford Escape used, however, we've been very pleased. It is reliable, durable and fun to drive.

It lasts forever. I've owned this car for 13 years, and I only have 77000 miles on it, but it gets great mileage, and I haven't had any huge troubles with it.
I love my car because it has lasted me for 13 years. I only have about 77000 miles on it. I feel like it has kept me safe this whole time, it stores a lot in the trunk, and I love to drive it. I can't think of anything I dislike.

Bad Mileage and crazy door alarm.
My car is, in my opinion, terrible on gas mileage. It only gets 16 MPG no matter where I go. Also my door alarm keeps going off even when I'm going 80 MPH down the road.

Reliable Escape cannot be beat!
I have 181, 000 miles and it has been extremely reliable. Really afraid to get a newer vehicle because it has caused me so few problems. I get good gas mileage, most people cannot believe it is a 2005 and I feel safe in it. Other than replacing things for wear and tear I have had no issues.

Lots of space for a young couple and their dog to have reliable transportation
I like that it is an SUV style vehicle and that I am able to see well out of it.
