2018 Ford Edge Review: Decent Midsize SUV With Reasonable Ownership Costs As It Ages

Alex Showalter
Jan 6, 2023

The 2018 Ford Edge lasts around 200,000 miles with some wiper motor and battery issues reported. At $15,900 to $24,225, it’s a decent value for a midsize SUV with a nice interior for the money.

likeFilled The Good
There’s a lot of passenger room in the cabin, the suspension is smooth and there’s a lot of safety technology available.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The transmission is slow to change gears, rear visibility is poor with the thick pillars and the base engine is a bit weak.

Is the 2018 Ford Edge a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 7/10 – 2018 is a good year for the Ford Edge, although it’s not as nice as some other SUVs in the competitive midsize market, giving it an average overall score. Owner reviews praise the low maintenance costs, smooth suspension, as well as the performance from the turbocharged V6 engine.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 8/10 – Interior materials are reasonably luxurious for its price, the seats are very comfortable with a lot of cushions, cargo space is also good.
  • Reliability 7/10 – There are no widespread mechanical issues on the 2018 Ford Edge. Avoid models from 20152016 since they have serious engine problems. Models from 20172022 are much more reliable.
  • Performance 8/10 – The base engines are similar to other midsize SUVs, while the EcoBoost V6 is quicker than a lot of the competition.
  • Safety 9/10 – The 2018 Edge is a very safe SUV, earning a perfect 5-star rating in government crash tests. Ford MyKey and a rearview camera are standard. Optional upgrades include forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, as well as automatic emergency braking.
  • Gas Mileage 7/10 – Fuel economy is fine at up to 24 MPG, giving 432 miles of range from the 18 gallon tank. Gas costs are $6 cheaper than average, at $203 per month.
  • Value 7/10 – The 2018 Ford Edge is cheaper than many competitors, although depreciation is quicker than other SUVs, giving it an okay value score.

I will look at purchasing another edge when I look for a new vehicle.
Haven't had any problems with the first 35,000 miles. The only complaint I would have is that the mpg is lower than I expected. Have averaged about 24 mpg for all types of driving since the vehicle was new. My previous vehicle was a ford Taurus that was consistently over 30 mpg. The vehicle is very comfortable and provides an excellent smooth ride while I am traveling. It also handles very nice on the road. Really like the keyless locks and starter. The auto start has a larger range than the one on my last vehicle which is important to me.

Ford Edge is a great vehicle!
The 2018 Edge is my second Edge that I've had. I loved the 2015 so much that when my lease was up I ordered and bought the 2018 this year. The Edge has been my favorite vehicle to date. Comfort and reliability are the main qualities that made me buy this brand again. I love the heated seats and heated steering wheel in the winter time!

Why I like to drive my ford edge.
The ford edge is an extremely comfortable vehicle. It has plenty of room for 5 passengers and it is quiet while driving down the road. I enjoy the stereo system, the display is easy to navigate as well. It is the perfect vehicle for an individual or a family.

Ford edge 2018 review. The 2018 ford edge has an eager feel and crisp design.
Ford edge 2018 has a sharp steering, strong brake and minimal body lean which gives it an agile handling. It has an upgraded sync 3 infotainment system which is quite responsive and easy to use. The ford edge is great fuel economy estimates for the class and also spacious with an upscale cabin.

All-around superb vehicle.
This car is super reliable. Feels really safe and dependable, but it is also sleek and good-looking. I bought this car because I was looking for a car I could travel the country with, but also had cool technological features. This has hit every one of my needs so far.

Nothing but problems since day 1
Having owned an older Edge were used to upgrade to this one. Oil pan leaks, replaced 4 or 5 times now. Ongoing vibration noises that mysteriously can never be found how to fix. A year and a half of dealing with ford Canada and nothing done yet to make this tolerable. It's been in the shop more than our driveway. Worst purchase ever. It's been rewired, steroid replaced, exhaust clamps replaced. You name it nothing fixes it. As for the oil plan replacing it and silicone havent worked yet. Pos car.such a shame.we really enjoyed our first one

Don’t count on good warranty!
My problem began about a year after purchase. I had trouble with the APIM which controls stereo, phone, navigation. I have had it in the shop three times. Now, it is 300 miles over warranty and still having the same problem! They want $1200+ to fix it. After my service manager called Ford, they agree to pay all but $200+. Still ridiculous!! This is not a new problem. It is one Ford has failed to fix from the beginning! I won’t be buying another Ford!

Brand new car only 2,000 miles, has been at the Ford Dealer twice already
The Ford Dealer cannot locate the issue of why our car won't start and we purchased it in November 2, 2018 and by February 26, 2019 it was in the shop It won't start. Brought it back March 8, 2019, won't start again. They said we could pick it up today, March 18 but they said they can't find any problems with it.

Problems, Peoblems, Problems!
Bought the 2018 Ford Edge Platinum in 7/18. It has been in the shop 5 times out of 6 months due to Body Problems. The drivers mirror constantly falls out due to cheap tabs. The hatch had to be replaced , the back quarter panel was gapped and broken and now I have foggy tail lights and a hole in the rubber seal around the drivers door. It has been a nightmare and this car had 2 miles on it when purchased. Runs good but the body is a piece of junk.

What Do Critics Say About the Ford Edge?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2018 Ford Edge offers a more luxurious cabin than other SUVs, with average owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the 2018 Edge at 4.1/5, praising the smooth suspension, but doesn’t like the slow transmission.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Edge a 4.4/5, enjoying the comfortable driver’s seat, but owners don’t like the poor off-road performance.

What Common Problems Does the 2018 Ford Edge Have?

Problems found on the 2018 Ford Edge include wiper motor failures, dead batteries, as well as some rare yet serious coolant leak issues. Overall, most of the problems are relatively minor, leading to affordable repair costs as the 2018 Edge ages.

Wiper motor failures are a complaint from 2018 Ford Edge owners at around 15,000 miles. Some owners have been able to solve the problem by simply restarting the SUV. Other owners have replaced the windshield wiper motors, which cost around $450, depending on local labor rates.

Dead batteries also show up on some Edge models in the first 30,000 miles. There are a lot of electrical accessories in modern cars which leads to them drawing power while the engine is off. Diagnosing the source of the problem costs around $150, while replacing the battery is roughly $250.

Coolant leaks are a rare, but serious, issue found on some 2018 Edge models with the 2.0L 4-cylinder engine at around 70,000 miles. The head gasket in a few models has been known to fail, allowing coolant to leak and get into the cylinder. If you notice coolant leaks, it’s a good idea to have your Edge towed to a shop for inspection since running without coolant can destroy the engine which costs over $5,000 to replace.

There are five recalls on the 2018 Ford Edge, which is similar to other midsize SUVs from the same year. The most serious recall covers the torque converter connection, which can fail, increasing the risk of a crash. Other mechanical recalls cover the front brake hoses, and alternator cables. All of the issues will be fixed by Ford for free on affected models.

How Long Will the 2018 Ford Edge Last?

A well-maintained 2018 Ford Edge can last around 200,000 miles, which is around 100,000 miles less than the long-lasting Toyota Highlander. Regular annual maintenance costs are similar to other midsize SUVs, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $454 per year.

As a used 2018 Ford Edge reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the brake master cylinder for $350, transmission mounts costing $400, as well as the steering column adjust motor which costs $300.

Safety technology is good for a midsize SUV since there’s a standard rearview camera and Ford MyKey, which lets you set speed limits. Available advanced safety features include blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, 180-degree parking camera system, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, automatic high beams, rear parking sensors, parallel park assist, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control.

Great small sized SUV. This car gets great gas mileage but maintains great interior room to comfortably hold 4 adults. The Bluetooth take literally 5 seconds to connect as soon as I get in my vehicle. For it being my first car in my name I like it a lot.

Fast, reliable, and sharp car!
The edge is so comfortable. It rides so smooth and the noise from the insider is little to none! The backup camera is great and reliable. The stereo sounds amazing and is very good quality. It is definitely one of the many cars I would recommend. Truly one of my favorite cars that I have leased.

Ford edge, a great, reliable SUV.
My 2018 ford edge is a very reliable vehicle. The hands free features are great and I love the apple carplay option. I'drives very smooth and has very little road noise. There is also plenty of room for front seat and back seat passengers! I highly recommend this vehicle.

Best all around vehicle on the market.
I love the room in it, the acceleration is great, looks like a big car but drives like a compact car. This is my 4th ford edge and I would buy another. I have enough every one of them. Fantastic car and an average gas mileage. The stereo system ranks up there with the best.

Comfortable for all drive and use.
Ford edge 2018 is awesome. I use more than 1 year I am very happy to use my car. It is also high very comfortable for my family. I always check my car engine after every 3 months. The engine still as new. I am happy to share my opinion here. I suggest to all to buy and use the car.

Why you should purchase a Ford Connect.
The Ford Connect. What I like most about this vehicle is the comfort of the driver's seat on long trips. Also the fact the all the rear seats collapse into the floor giving me loads of space as if the vehicle was a van. I purchased this vehicle due to the fact that I have two huge dogs. One is a 100 pound German Shepherd and the other is a 100 pound Old English Sheepdog. They both have ample room on long trips to lie down and are not cramped at all. The as mileage on this vehicle is unbelievable. All in all I am completely satisfied with my purchase.

Ford edge 2018 car review.
I love my car, it handles really well in all types of weather conditions. The only downside to the edge is that the computers seem to die immediately after the warranty is up. Otherwise it is a great car, it is sleek and looks high end, I would recommend this car to anyone.

Convenience features of the 2018 ford edge.
My 2018 ford edge has a very smooth ride. The model I have has heated leather seats and steering wheel making it convenient in the colder months. My cell phone hooks up nicely making it convenient to make calls and listen to texts while driving and still be able to watch the road. Overall I am very pleased with this vehicle.

I would give a 4 out of 5 stars, mostly because it is comfortable to use.
I have been using this car as my primary vehicle and I am very satisfied with its performance. It is very reliable and comfortable. Easy to use and most importantly it gets the job done. It is not very feature rich but I like the minimalist design of this car.

Ford edge the good and the bad of it!
I like the style of car. I like my navigation system. I like that is accelerates quickly. It is very roomy inside. It gets good gas mileage. It is very comfortable. Seats adjusts in many ways. The color is nice. I don't like how the hood is so high. It makes it hard to see in front of you. Not a good car for new drivers. Too many blind spots. Will not lease this car again.

Ford edge drives smooth and sporty.
The automatic engine turn off when stopped for a while it quite annoying. I understand the purpose is to save gas but it can be a hassle at stop lights. I love the sport mode, it drives super smoothly. Very spacious considering it isn't a huge truck.

This is a very smooth car.
It is a very good car. I honestly recommend this car for everyone. I felt very amazing using this car till now. Everyone of this world should buy this car. People will love this car I can assure. I bought this car on my wife's suggestion. My daughter and son love this car as well. I take them to their school by this car, I go to my office by this car.

Engine problems in the ford cars.
I seem to be having a lot of minor to semi serious engine issues or problems. I routinely have issues with the gas and fuel evaporation system. I usually have to pump gas once per week. During my fill up, I have problems restarting the car. I must get the evaporation fuel system replaced, otherwise I will still have these problems.

Ford edge is a great buy!
It is a good vehicle but we recently had to get manufacturing repairs done because the o2 sensor went out. However ford happily fixed it with little cost to us. Overall it is a great vehicle very roomy. We opted for this vehicle so our sons car seat could fit comfortably in the back.

Driving comfortable ford edge.
Ford edge is among a rarer group that prioritizes two-row comfort over maximum people-hauling. It is a sharp-looking rig, too, but it faces heavy competition from the likes of the Chevy blazer, Honda passport, Hyundai Santa Fe, and Volkswagen atlas cross sport. Ford edge is awesome for a long drive. I feel so happy to dive.

Right size for me. Is a medium size SUV. I had a large size SUV before.
Do not have any problems. Do not use it that much. And do not hardly use it at all with being quarantined. I like the size of it and all the features, which I don't even know how to use half of them. There is nothing I can think of to complain about. I have had it for about 11 months and am very pleased with it. I have had fords at least half of my long life and have always been satisfied with them. They stand by their product of it needs anything.

Best car ever, I absolutely love it.
I do not have problems, I absolutely love my vehicle. I would recommend this car to anyone. It is good for single people and for families. I have the two toned seats and it is the best decision I have made. I love the cooling seats and the heated seats in the back seats.

Comfortable and quiet ride.
Like the size and how solid it feels. Very quiet when driving it over all kinds of road materials and conditions. Lots of creature comforts and security for the kids that make long trips bearable. Handles well and like how the driver sits a little higher on the road.

Reliability is most VIP for this working woman...and right now....this car is not showing up :(
Karen, my 2018 Edge at 44,500 or so has just been tagged for a whole new engine replacement...they are not saying the "why" exactly yet...supposedly Ford back East will do the official autopsy report...very disconcerting...glad to see your post ...maybe we need a support group :) Anyhow, thanks...Jane

Good SUV for the price point.
It is pretty well built and rides nicely. Overall, I am very happy with the purchase. It gets decent gas mileage, about 22 mpg mixed city and highway. It is relatively quiet and the engine is good - although I am unsure whether it would be good for towing a boat or trailer.

Great family car. Perfect care for a family of 4!
The 2018 ford edge titanium edition is a great family car. It fits my family of 4 very comfortably plus our stuff for long trips. It is great or packing the dog into as well going to soccer or baseball practice. Interior is super comfortable and the sound system is fantastic allowing me to connect Spotify through my phone to the stereo system. I would recommend the ford edge to anyone.

Lots of great features: designed for safety.
Love the quiet ride; the lane sensing system, the cruise control package; the rubber fitted floor mats; the telephone capacity is understandable roomy in back seat. Like the three seat heater options the cameras are great; wish they had one on the front that beeped when I was getting too close to something.

The car is just the right size for me and my husband.
No problems at all plenty of room. I just love my Ford Escape. The seats are comfortable to sit in on long distance trips - the gas mileage is great. I told u I cannot think of anything else please forgive me; it has plenty of trunk space in the back. The air conditioning is just wonderful. You can turn the air at any temperature and the same with the heating.

The most interesting feature of my Ford Edge is all of the great technology.
There are currently no problems with my Ford Edge. The Ford Edge is a great vehicle that anyone should own if given a chance to do so.
