2012 Ford Edge Review: Unreliable SUV With High Ownership Costs To Avoid

Alex Showalter
Apr 8, 2022

The 2012 Edge lasts around 200,000 miles with many engine and brake system problems. At $10,942 – 14,592, it’s too expensive when there are better SUVs on the market.

likeFilled The Good
The suspension is very comfortable, the 4-cylinder engine is efficient and there are advanced safety technology features available.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The infotainment system freezes up, the transmission is clunky and rear visibility is poor.

Is the 2012 Ford Edge a Good Used SUV?

  • No, 2012 is a bad year. Owners have complained a lot about the stereo system, brake issues, and high ownership costs.
  • Reliability ratings are below average with a lot of mechanical problems. Models from 2014 and newer have fewer complaints.
  • Performance is okay from the 4-cylinder, but improves with both V6 options.
  • The Edge is a safe SUV getting 4 out of 5 stars in government crash tests and a Top Safety Pick Award. Optional safety features include backup and 360 cameras, as well as adaptive cruise control and collision warning systems.
  • Fuel economy is good at up to 24 MPG combined.

My experience with the ford edge.
No issues or problems with this ford edge model. Have 156000 miles now and works like a champ, the most major expenses has been the third set of tires I have added to this vehicle. I am getting 25 mpg. I am considering buying this edge model in the upcoming year.

Ford edge is the way to go!
I absolutely love my ford edge. I have 2 kids and we have plenty of room for everyone! It is keyless entry which makes getting in and going much faster. There is a cup holder in the back on a fold down so the kids have a place to put drinks or toys. The drive is smooth and is actually pretty good on gas. It is Bluetooth equipped so I can do hands free with my cell phone and play music from my phone.

I love the Edge. Bought it brand new and to date have not had a single issue with it. Other than routine maintenance and new tires there have been no other issues. 100% reliable. Comfortable and sleek design make it feel like luxury without the price.

Ford Edge 2012, smooth drive, good on dirt roads
I had several problems with the radio until eventually I had to have it replaced. It does make a weird loud noise when driving, sounds like it's coming from the engine. At first I thought it was only my vehicle until I drove my dads and noticed it made the same noise but not as loud. Smooth drive down the expressway and most dirt roads. Plenty of space in the back for our double stroller and some extra supplies.

Brake issues
Brake issues have been noted on several websites. My elderly mother had the same issue where coming to a normal stop the brake pedal went to floor and she barely stopped before hitting someone 9 days ago (7-Oct.-2019). As stated by hundreds of people Ford either says nothing is wrong or replace the brake booster for a huge fee. A few have reported that it happened again after replacing the booster. I highly recommend reporting any complaints on nhtsa.gov. No investigations will be done or recalls done unless you report it on this site. I find it difficult to navigate the site by please make the effort and file a complaint there for any vehicle on this government site. Again it's nhtsa.gov

The sunroof is nice, I like to keep it open.
Great performance. Smooth ride. The technology does not compare with my new phone so I am not able to use all the functions anymore. Its roomie for 5 passengers to ride. The back end has a lot of room to transport things. The front has a lot of room for the passenger and driver.

Problems need resolved
My Ford edge lost break petal, the garage changed the booster and master cylinder ( $351.00) out of my pocket. When they power bled the breaks the master cylinder blew and contaminated the booster, I feel i shouldnt have been charged for the master cylinder!! Now my vehicle has been sitting over there for almost 2 weeks i havent heard anything, they arent returning my calls. And im still making payments for a car thats not fixed

The tire rims will crack.
Feel everything with tires. The radio system goes out. Rims are losing color. Drivers seat will not continue to adjust to programs or stay tightened.

2/10 would not recommend, my ford touch is complete garbage.
Handles well, drives smoothly and quietly. My Ford touch is 100% complete garbage. It does not work correctly about 90% of the time. Since purchasing we have had to replace numerous parts. Gas mileage is not great. I couldn't recommend this car to anybody that is looking to purchase this make/model/year. Waste of money, always something wrong with it even though it has been maintained perfectly.

Honest 2012 ford edge limited review.
I have had issues with electrical system such as the touchscreen going out and not being able to shut the heat off. I have had to replace the y joint and it has not sat outside in the snow. I do like the space in the hatch. With the fold down seats there is quite a bit of space and can actually haul large items. Seats are comfortable and panoramic sunroof is nice. Sound system is very nice and has quite the bass. The car is not great on gas, I find myself frequently filling up.

Dependable and Reliable Mid-Size Truck
Dependable but feels cramped even if you're not a large person. Rides smooth and minimal cost to upkeep. Great warranty.

What Do Critics Say About the Edge?

  • Consumer Reports finds the Edge to fall short with poor driving dynamics and low owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds gives the Edge a 3.9/5 and likes the quiet cabin, but the infotainment is hard to use.
  • Kelley Blue Book users rate the Edge 4.5/5 and enjoy the smooth suspension, but dislike the lack of a third row.

What Common Problems Does the 2012 Ford Edge Have?

There are many serious problems with the 2012 Edge including sensor failures, dead engines, and brake system issues.

Door ajar sensor failures are the most common complaint at around 60,000 miles. The chime will stay on even when the door is closed. Replacing the sensor on the latch costs about $350.

Stalling engines are a frequent issue in the first 55,000 miles. Some owners have had to replace the engine costing over $4,000, and others have installed a new throttle body for $1,200.

Brake system problems show up on many vehicles in the first 60,000 miles. The booster fails, making the brake system very difficult to use. Replacing the booster costs about $1,200.

There are 3 serious recalls including cracked fuel lines which can cause a fire, and half shaft disengagement which allows the vehicle to roll away.

How Long Will the 2012 Ford Edge Last?

A properly maintained 2012 Ford Edge will last about 200,000 miles, which is 100,000 miles shorter than top rivals including the Highlander. Regular annual maintenance costs are very high, according to Repair Pal, at $704 per year.

Since most used Edge models from 2012 have over 100,000 miles buyers should be prepared to replace the fuel pump for $1,400, air conditioning lines costing $700, and the power steering hose which costs $400.

accountCircle Meaghan W

It has been reliable. However, when I first purchased it used, I had to completely replace the braking system.

accountCircle Shannon W

Yes, my 2012 ford edge is reliable. I keep up on regular maintenance and have started having problems with the braking system. I have had it serviced twice and the ford service department has not been able to resolve the issue.

accountCircle Margie M

There have not been many problems with this vehicle other than regularly scheduled maintenance to keep it in tip, top shape.

accountCircle Christie A

The only issues it had were under warranty and were fixed. Any other problems I have had were general maintenance and not specific to the edge.

accountCircle Kelsey G

Absolutely reliable! I love this car because I haven't had any problems! I do not expect anything to come up anytime soon.

accountCircle Sharon R

It’s not really reliable. A few times a year it seems to break down or something goes wrong in/on the vehicle that I have to fix.

How Much Is the 2012 Ford Edge Worth?

Blue book prices range from $10,942 – 14,592, similar in price to a Pilot or Outback. When new, the price range was $27,770 to $38,960. Depreciation is worse than average, losing about 12% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Edge?

There are four models of the Edge available. Technology is good and was last updated in 2011, with a complete redesign coming in 2015.

SE is the entry-level model with:

  • 17-Inch Alloy Wheels
  • Cloth Seating
  • Blind Spot Monitoring
  • Cruise Control
  • 6-Speaker AM/FM/CD Stereo With 3.5mm AUX Jack

SEL is a popular step up adding:

  • 18-Inch Alloy Wheels
  • Dual Zone Climate Control
  • 8-Power Driver’s Seat
  • Sync Including Bluetooth and USB Connectivity

Limited is the luxury model and has:

  • 18-Inch Chrome Wheels
  • Leather Seating
  • Heated Seats
  • MyFord Touch Infotainment System
  • Remote Ignition
  • 12-Speaker Sony Stereo System

Sport is a performance-oriented model with:

  • 22-Inch Alloy Wheels
  • Sport Suspension
  • Xenon Headlights
  • Unique Exterior Trim

What Engines Come In the Edge?

  • The base engine is a reasonably powerful 3.5L V6 with 285 horsepower that gets up to 22 MPG combined.
  • An optional upgrade is the more efficient 2.0L 4-cylinder turbo with 240 horsepower that gets up to 24 MPG combined.
  • The Sport model has a high-powered 3.7L V6 with 305 horsepower getting 19 MPG combined, and only takes 7.5 seconds to go 0-60 MPH.

What Colors Does the Edge Come In?

How Big Is the Edge?

The Edge is smaller than other midsize SUVs including the 4Runner and Grand Cherokee. Passenger room is good with a decent amount of legroom in the backseats, but taller adults may find the headroom limited.

Cargo space is worse than some rivals with 32 cubic feet of room behind the seats, and a maximum of 69 cubic feet with the seats folded flat.

VehicleHistory Image

How Does the Edge Compare to the Competition?

The Ford Explorer is a popular competitor costing about $2,000 more. Where the Explorer stands out is with more passenger room, but technology is better on the Edge. We recommend the Explorer which lasts longer and fits more people.

The Chevy Equinox is another rival at around $1,000 cheaper. Interior materials are nicer in the Equinox, but the Edge is sportier to drive. Neither is a good SUV since they both have expensive mechanical problems.

The ford edge gives you the most bang for your buck.
Minimal issues since new. I would definitely purchase another. The most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. Drives great in the snow. Very pleased with my purchase. No rust and it has always been in Michigan winters with our salty roads. Minivans were my vehicle of choice up until this purchase. The edge will always be my go to now.

Reliable family vehicle AWD.
As my ford edge is getting older it has a bad catalytic converter and the door has a bad sensor so sometimes it says it is open but truly is shut. Other than that it has been a decent and reliable vehicle. It fits my two dogs in the back and my daughter so it does have room. No rusting issues yet.

Ford edge 2012 big inside small outside.
My vehicle, ford edge 2012 has some problems over the years as it recently reached 100,000 miles. I do own the car and is not renting. It is very comfortable and feels big on the inside as it does not look as big on the outside. It drives without any problems and the main problems focus on the inside as the roof sky screen is stuck open and the sun is constantly beating down. Overall it is a great drive and I will be happy to have it for a while.
accountCircle Elizabeth D on June 8, 2021
It is small enough to get around, but it does make me feel safe.
I wish it had a back up camera. Also with my new iPhone playing music is a little more complicated than I prefer. It has been very reliable and zero maintenance issue. I live in South Texas so I have to reset the heater once a year but never had to replace it.

My car is a silver SUV with 4 doors and 5 seats.
I love my car and it is been super reliable for the most part. It is never broken down on me, however there has been slight issues that have had to be fixed now and then. There’s an issue with the gas cap, which has been a hassle to deal with. It was made with a no cap easy fuel and it keeps my check engine light on due to that. Every time I go to get my car checked for the reasoning for engine light. I am told I didn't put my gas cap on. There is no gas cap so that is been slightly frustrating.

Wonderful with a few small quirks.
My edge is great, I have had a few weird things wrong here and there but overall it is a great car. I have had the dual ac system get stuck to where I had to manually reset it to unstick the door so that both climate controls worked independently again. My windshield wipers have started randomly running on their own lately. Other than that my car runs great, and does well in all weather.

Great car for a family of 4.
Fits my needs perfectly. Family of 4. Plenty of room for sports gear, good gas mileage. Kids are younger and are comfortable in the back seat. Has the sync system. The back seats can fold down flat! That was very important when I was looking. There is not a lot I would change about it. I would like for there to be a way the back seat could flip up so it would be easier to clean under. Fits 2 car seats comfortably, 3 would be a struggle.

This car is very comfortable and fairly reliable. Feels spacious and easily fits five people, but not too big to drive smoothly. I can still park almost anywhere easily. Great “starting out” family vehicle.
My ford edge has been wonderful! I was looking at getting something bigger as I have always just had cars. This vehicle does not sit up too high like some suvs, but I am not low like in a car either. I, also, have a good amount of room for my family, plus huge trunk. I am pregnant right now, so I am in the market for something with a bit more seat room for two car seats. Overall, my ford edge experience has been a great one!

The ford edge is an amazing reliable car. My husband and I drive it every day to work. The back seat is roomy and the trunk has a lot of room to store things. Comfortable, long lasting vehicle.
I like my vehicle because it is comfortable and runs pretty well. It has high gas mileage and runs very smooth. I have taken my vehicle from Illinois to Louisiana multiple times and to Florida once and never had any issues. My vehicle is a little compact because I have two car seats in the back and it does not have third row seating. So that is a minor downfall but all in all, I am happy with my vehicle.

My Ford Edge is the best car I've ever had!
The Ford Edge SE is the best car I've had thus far. It has a large screen, which helps a lot with the backup camera. Everything is automatic, and the backseat lays down so you can fit large items in the trunk. It also has a great towing capacity. It runs very smoothly, and is pretty good on gas. The only issue I've had is sometimes the sensor on the passenger side will show that the door is open when it is not. It's a fairly easy fix, but will drain your battery if not addressed. Overall it is a great family vehicle.

Ford edge - great car with a few problems.
I love my ford edge, and it is a great car but there are a few problems with it. It is a smaller car, I wouldn't suggest it for families with kids, especially if they're involved in sports. One other problem I have with my car is the Bluetooth and some of the warning lights. Anytime I connect my phone to the radio and play music it will skip the song like 30 seconds in and I have never been able to fix it. And the warning lights like the oil change and check engine light come on when there’s nothing actually wrong with the car. Even with all those problems, I still think it is a great car and it has a great look to it. And I should mention I have a 2012 so those problems probably do not happen in the newer models.

This car is great! It is big enough to haul around kids or outdoor projects, but does not feel like a beast driving down the road. Comfortable and stylish. Any issues I had were taken care of with the dealership and were either warranty issues or minor issues. No major work has been done on it. The minor issue is the radio and climate so trolls is a giant computer so if something is wrong with that you cannot control anything.
