2018 Chrysler Pacifica Review: Unreliable Year For The Upscale Minivan Buyers Should Avoid

Alex Showalter
Jan 6, 2023

The 2018 Chrysler Pacifica lasts around 200,000 miles with some transmission and engine software issues. At $17,650 to $26,700, it’s not really worth the money when transmission problems can be expensive to fix.

VehicleHistory Image
likeFilled The Good
There’s plenty of passenger room in the cabin, the interior materials are nicer than other minivans and visibility is excellent.
dislikeFilled The Bad
There’s no all-wheel drive available, the engine runs rougher than some competitors and the nine-speed transmission is clunky.

Is the 2018 Chrysler Pacifica a Good Used Minivan?

  • Overall Rating 7/10 – 2018 is a bad year for the Chrysler Pacifica since there are still a lot of mechanical issues reported, giving it a low overall score. Owner reviews complain about steering issues, expensive repair bills, as well as the engine stalling.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 9/10 – Interior materials are very luxurious for a minivan, the seats offer great comfort on long drives, cargo space is also excellent.
  • Reliability 6/10 – There are some widespread transmission problems found on the 2018 Pacifica. Avoid models from 2017-2018. Newer models from 20192022 are much better choices.
  • Performance 7/10 – Performance is good for a minivan from the strong V6, yet it’s still not very exciting to drive.
  • Safety 9/10 – The 2018 Pacifica is a safe minivan, earning a perfect 5-star rating in government crash tests. There’s a standard rearview camera. Optional upgrades include lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, as well as automatic parking.
  • Gas Mileage 7/10 – Fuel economy is okay at up to 22 MPG, giving 418 miles of range from the 19 gallon tank. Gas costs are $44 cheaper than average, at $183 per month.
  • Value 6/10 – The 2018 Chrysler Pacifica is cheaper than a lot of other minivans, although rapid depreciation makes it a bad long-term value.

The pacifica, a great family vehicle.
I love my pacifica. I love how it drives and how comfortable it is. The stow and go are great for getting large items in. I am frequently able to rearrange the seats to fit large items and my kids. There is a lot of technology, the touch screen, built in navigation, hands free calling that are all great to use. The kids also love the DVD player in the back for longer trips.

Awesome family vehicle that feels sporty and responsive.
I really haven't had any problems with my vehicle. It is beautiful. Well made. Comfortable. I love all of the upgrades. We use and enjoy the car to its fullest. The gas mileage is great. The hybrid is as well. The sound system is excellent. The detail in design is beautiful. The car has great speed and a smooth ride.

Smooth ride, very roomy, with many great electronic features for both children and adults.
I love all the room and trunk space it has with two little kids. The ease of getting the very back seat even with car seats installed is great. Also the room to get the kids in and out. Also the kids love the built in DVD players and I love the electronic features as well.

Great for big families I fit comfortably and cargo room!
Van is very roomy, comfortable lumbar support, plenty of extra console room and cup holders, easy fold down or take out seats. The only feature I do not care for is the curve of the head support. Great mileage for long trips. Hands free built in phone access.

Rolls back when in drive
My 2018 Pacifica is unsafe! Had at 2 dealerships on many occasions for days and weeks (once even a month). Repeatedly duplicated the ROLLING BACK WHILE IN DRIVE issue on a test drive with employee. Chrysler said they’d do a buy back, but didn’t, got nowhere with dealership. It’s sporadic so 2nd dealership hasn’t duplicated issue. Did fix some other issues such as radio, back up camera coming on while in drive, dial gear shift jumping to R while driving, and brakes with grounding the battery. Treated horribly by Chrysler and told to hire an attorney! Dealerships don’t want to deal with Chrysler or the problem at hand. Very disappointed and sad that my family has to ride in this unsafe Pacifica. Dealership managers say their “hands are tied by Chrysler”, I think their fingers are broken since they don’t return phone calls!

Engine stalling
We loved this car until the car started to frequently stall in the middle of a drive. We found out the for the same issue their 2017 model have been recalled and that they hadn't really found ways to fix this problem and the issue sort of carried on to 2018 model. Although in my case the stalling happened when I was stopped at the signals or driving at a slow speed, I read that some people have their pacifica stalled on a highway at a high speed and I didn't feel safe dring the car anymore. I would have loved to keep this car if it wasn't for this potentially leathal safety issue, however I don't feel it's worth taking a chance with our kids and our own lives.

Nothing but problems since we bought the heated seat went out the start and stop went out it has a horrible smell when it rains 20,000 miles and I need new tires it’s got a lot of nice features but the problems just isn’t worth trading it as quick as we can

Not a fan of the pacifica.
It is too high tech. And I have had to bring it back in a few times because of glitching problems. I hate how it does not have a GPS. I have to connect my phone. Then the phone rings too loud over the speakers compared to the sound of the radio or movie is playing. I also hate that if I get a phone call the kids cannot hear their movie so they are in my conversation.

This mom's view on her soccer, baseball, lacrosse and football van.
The tires do not feel right. Not as much traction as I think it should. When I turn and accelerate the car shakes. The interior is light grey and wish I had got a darker color. I also wish I had leather. With 4 kids, the cloth gets stained easy. Next time I’d like to get a SUV.

Nightmare family purchase.
Replaced batteries 3 times. Replaced auxiliary battery 1 week after purchasing. Then 2 yrs later auxiliary needs to be replaced again along with the main battery. We have had electrical issues with shifter twice and needed repair and automatic sliding doors three times and need repair.

What Do Critics Say About the Chrysler Pacifica?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2018 Chrysler Pacifica offers a nice interior for the money, with lower owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Pacifica at 3.8/5, praising the excellent stow ‘n go seats, but doesn’t like the clunky transmission.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Pacifica a 4.3/5, enjoying the advanced technology, but owners don’t like the lack of all-wheel drive.

What Common Problems Does the 2018 Chrysler Pacifica Have?

Common problems on the 2018 Chrysler Pacifica include the transmission slipping while changing gears, the engine shutting down while driving, as well as the sliding doors not shutting. Overall, these problems are a bit worse than other minivans, with higher repair costs as well.

The transmission slipping while changing gears is the most widespread complaint from Pacifica owners at around 25,000 miles. There are some physical problems with the gears in the transmission which cause damage to the entire assembly. Rebuilding the transmission costs around $3,000, depending on local labor rates.

The engine shutting down while driving is another issue mentioned by 2018 Pacifica owners at roughly 30,000 miles. Some owners have replaced both the main battery as well as the auto start/stop battery, which solves the problem. It’s a bit of a labor-intensive process, costing around $650. Other owners have done engine software updates which have improved the reliability.

The sliding doors not shutting has also shown up on some Pacifica models at around 25,000 miles. Usually when the doors have an issue closing, it’s a sign of a problem with the track being dirty or full of debris. Cleaning out the tracks fixes the problem often. If there are electrical issues with the door closing motor, it can cost over $1,000 to fix.

There are ten recalls on the 2018 Chrysler Pacifica, which is worse than many other minivans from the same year. The most serious recall allows the minivan to roll away unintentionally. Chrysler will replace the manual park release plug for free on affected models. Other recalls cover the voltage regulator, rearview camera, as well as corroded battery terminals, which Chrysler will also address for free.

How Long Will the 2018 Chrysler Pacifica Last?

A well-maintained 2018 Chrysler Pacifica can last around 200,000 miles, which is about 100,000 miles less than the top-rated Toyota Sienna. Regular annual maintenance costs are similar to other minivans according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $443 per year.

As a used 2018 Chrysler Pacifica reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the fuel EVAP canister for $400, engine oil pan costing $600, as well as the ignition coil which costs around $300.

accountCircle Deborah D

Yes it is. My car has navigation and a screen that I can watch myself in rear view. Also I am sure to take a trip and know that my truck is reliable.

accountCircle Donna W

Yes and no problems except general maintenance! If there is more covered by warranty on the vehicle!

accountCircle Rebekah T

It is very reliable. We have not had any problems in the year we have owned it. Don't anticipate any trouble in the future. It drives like a charm. Very pretty color n beautiful body

accountCircle Genesis A

No. It is not reliable. It had stalled several times for me. The electronic features cause more problems BC they don't always function properly (ac won't work and blows hot unless it's set at 70 or lower), compass doesn't work on dash, Bluetooth and display frequently go black with no warning and shut off.

accountCircle Michele R

So far the Chrysler Pacifica has been a very reliable vehicle for me. I have not had any issues to date.

accountCircle Andrew H

Yes it is reliable. It is currently in the shop right now though getting some electrical stuff fixed

accountCircle Gina T

Yes it is reliable. It is in great condition and has a great system. I don't have to worry about it.

accountCircle Claudia C

It is a very reliable vehicle. Chrysler has been on top of informing me of any issues as they come up.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is great for a minivan since the Pacifica comes standard with a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There’s also an optional 8.4-inch touchscreen available.

Safety technology is very good with a standard rearview camera, blind spot monitoring, as well as rear cross traffic alert. Optional advanced safety features include a 360-degree parking camera, front and rear parking sensors, automatic reverse braking, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, along with automatic parking

Is the 2018 Chrysler Pacifica a Good Value?

No, the 2018 Chrysler Pacifica is not a good value since there are still some expensive mechanical problems. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $17,650, to $26,700, making it more than a Kia Sedona or Dodge Grand Caravan. When new, the price range was $26,995 to $44,095. Depreciation is worse than other minivans, losing about 15% of its current value per year.

What Engines Come In the Chrysler Pacifica?

The engine in the 2018 Chrysler Pacifica is the strong 3.6L V6 which makes 287 horsepower while getting up to 22 MPG. It comes standard with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Performance is great, taking only 6.5 seconds to go from 0-60 MPH.

What Colors Does the Chrysler Pacifica Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Chrysler Pacifica?

The 2018 Chrysler Pacifica is an extremely comfortable minivan with seating for up to eight passengers depending on the configuration. Seating is very nice throughout the cabin, offering more high quality materials than other minivans in the same price range.

Passenger room is fantastic, there’s more than enough space in all three rows to easily fit taller adults. The stow ‘n go seating system also makes it easy to reconfigure the cabin.

How Much Storage Space Does the Chrysler Pacifica Have?

Cargo space is outstanding for a minivan with enough room for 5-6 suitcases behind the third row, 10-12 behind the second row, and well over 20 suitcases with all of the seats folded flat since it has over 140 cubic feet of room.

VehicleHistory Image

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The first generation of the Chrysler Pacifica Minivan came out in 2017, and is in production in 2022.

2017: First generation of the new Pacifica, replacing the older Town & Country minivan with new styling, engines, and technology.

2018: Standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, new entry-level L model, upgraded 8.4-inch touchscreen with Uconnect software.

2019: No major changes.

2020: Small interior styling changes, all-wheel drive available as an optional upgrade.

2021: More standard driver safety technology, minor exterior styling changes, wireless Apple CarPlay added.

2022: Amazon Fire TV offered in the rear-seat entertainment system.

How Does the Chrysler Pacifica Compare to the Competition?

The 2018 Chrysler Pacifica is a very good minivan if you’re looking for an upscale interior, although you do trade reliability for the more luxurious cabin.

The Honda Odyssey is another popular minivan which costs around $3,000 more. Standard technology is better in the Honda Odyssey, while the Chrysler Pacifica offers a more luxurious interior for the money. We recommend the Honda Odyssey since it will last longer, although both are decent choices worth taking a look at.

The Dodge Grand Caravan is another competitor, which is around $2,000 less. Performance is a bit better in the Dodge Grand Caravan, while the technology is significantly more up to date in the Chrysler Pacifica. We recommend the Chrysler Pacifica since they have similar reliability ratings.

There are a lot of recalls. The uconnect had problems a lot. There is great space and I like the stow and go. The back up camera is helpful when backing up. The seats are comfortable but I wish I had heated seats. The sensors on the sliding doors do not work as well as cars get older.

The pacifica is a great family van.
The pacifica is spacious. It seats 7 between 4 captains chairs and a bench in the third row. The bench seat can fold in half to allow extra cargo space. The second and third row seats are capable of storing which can open up the whole back area for storage. There are two televisions on the backs of the front seats. Those are great for the people in the second but not for the third row. The televisions are touchscreen and they have games to play. The problem with that is that smaller children have to learn forward to play. The van is very quiet. The touchscreen console is very nice. Trying to update the navigation system is very confusing.

Everything is great and I love the vehicle. There have been some instances when the transmission is clunky, and just the fact it is a Chrysler I figure it is going to break sooner rather than later. I have only had the vehicle for a week but it keeps surprising me with all the features it has. We have the touring l plus sport series. I absolutely love the Pacifica. Especially the DVDs that are on both headrests. It rides very smoothly and very comfortable for long road trips. I have the big touch screen and I'm still trying to get use to that. I find it hard to navigate the screen and give my full attention to driving. I have to do most things while at stop lights. Great family van for our needs
This minivan is great for our growing family and small garage. We primarily needed it for its sliding doors so it would fit in the space we have, as well as have the interior space needed for kids, car seats and grandparents when they visit. I love the way the pacifica drives, it feels more like driving a car than a minivan. The stow and go seats, as well as the ease of stowing the rear seats, have been a very useful feature. The only issues I have had is that the start/stop function has stopped working recently and needs to be serviced, and from time to time the radio display goes blank and restarts.

Perfect for a big family!
I love my pacifica! It is roomy, comfortable, and has great features. Perfect for a family with little kids! Little details like the built in sun visors, the seats that fold into the floor and the DVD system make it perfect for a family! It has very reliable with no issues so far, we have had it for 2 years.

No problems so great buy in my opinion.
The vehicle performance is mainly great and rarely any problems. The quality is great and is worth the buy. The sound system is great as well as the Bluetooth pairing system. It is smooth while driving. Actually haven't had any problems. I recommend it for maybe your second car but it does not really matter.

Great safety features and all the latest technology.
I love the upgraded technology on my new van. My old van was a basic model and 8 years old. I love having automatic sliding doors and rear liftgate. Plus, the backup camera really gives me peace of mind and added safety.

Smooth, spacious, luxurious and sleek.
I have not experienced any problems, it drives very smoothly and is extremely spacious. I love the features and comfort while driving. The backup camera is very clear and I love the blind spot notifications! Ability to change the climate in the rear and control all the doors are also game changers!

Great family van with lots of storage space.
I love the comfort of the car and the space. I do not like how the middle captain seats do not move back and forth but you can store them if not in use. I wish the back sunroof opened. The car drives very smoothly but I do have a problem with the turning as the car sometimes make noises.

Love the pacifica! Has all the amenities you could ask for.
It has great amenities! Lots of features. I love the key fob is able to open all the doors. It really helps with young kids. The stow and go seats help with traveling. The only thing I dislike is the how the engine turns off when you stop. It does have the capability to turn it off which makes it more manageable.

Very roomy for a large family. Storage is optimal. Could use more interior lighting however in the trunk space.
Standard safety features like blind spot monitoring, rear camera

Does not feel like a minivan!
Great van for growing kids! I did not want the stigma of a minivan but I have no regrets. Roomy, convenient, and easy to drive.

It is very spacious, has a lot of gizmos and gadgets, very safe.
The 2018 Chrysler pacifica is very spacious for big families and had plenty of room for car seats. It drives really smooth and does not take too long to get up and go. It is about $50 per fill up at the gas station. The radio and auxiliary system works really well and is very up to date on the technology. The audio comes in very well and it is great for hands free calling if the need arises. The back up camera helps out a lot, and auto breaks if you get too close to an object while backing up. The sensor on the side of the car warn you when cars are in your blind spots and allow for safe lane changes.
