2020 Chevrolet Trax Review: Dependable Compact SUV With Affordable Ownership Costs

Alex Showalter
Feb 24, 2023

The 2020 Chevrolet Trax lasts around 200,000 miles with some brake wear and stabilitrak computer issues reported. At $16,625 to $20,175, it’s a good value for shoppers on a budget, even if it’s not the most advanced SUV on the market.

likeFilled The Good
There’s a lot of passenger room for its size, the stereo system is great and the steering is very responsive.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The suspension is firm at highway speeds, the engine choices are weak and fuel economy isn’t as good as some competitors.

Is the 2020 Chevrolet Trax a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 7/10 – 2020 is a decent year for the Chevy Trax, yet it’s not as good as a lot of the other small SUVs on the market. Owner reviews praise the passenger room, low fuel costs, along with the entertainment technology.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 6/10 – Interior materials are cheaper than other small SUVs, the seats are reasonably comfortable, although cargo space is also limited.
  • Reliability 8/10 – There are no widespread issues on the 2020 Trax. Avoid models from 20152016 since there are widespread electrical issues. Models from 20172022 are more reliable.
  • Performance 6/10 – Performance is worse than other compact SUVs from the relatively weak four-cylinder engine, which is more efficient than powerful.
  • Safety 8/10 – The 2020 Trax is reasonably safe, earning a perfect 5-star rating in government crash tests. There’s a standard rearview camera. Optional upgrades include lane departure warning, along with blind spot monitoring.
  • Gas Mileage 8/10 – Fuel economy is good at up to 26 MPG, giving 364 miles of range from the 14 gallon tank. Gas costs are $34 cheaper than average at $155 per month.
  • Value 7/10 – The 2020 Chevy Trax is less expensive than the competition, although rapid depreciation lowers the overall value score.

Pros/cons of the 2020 Chevy trax.
Amazing in gas, wide screen and apple carplay a plus. Mad I cannot pop my trunk. Has to manually open. Same with the gas component. There should be a way to pop that automatically. The trunk space is not huge, that could be larger. The folded seats back great for moving large items.

Perfect for a family vehicle.
I personally love the vehicle. It is roomy enough for me and my 3 kids without being bulky. The back seats lay completely down making it easier to get larger items from the store without needing a truck. The engine isn't the strongest but it is perfect for in town and even highway use. Overall a good vehicle.

Pretty much a great car cannot wait for a new one to come out.
I love my car it great on gas it has a lot of room can fit a lot of things in it also stereo system works very well also comes with Wi-Fi which my kids love it when we go on trips. It only takes 20 dollars to fill it up it also comes full loaded seat can fold down to fit anything.

All the pros of owning a Chevy trax.
Very comfortable with a little sporty. Very reliable and very low maintenance. Love the technology that the trax has like back up camera display and touch screen. Love the mobile WI fi and syncing options to my phone or tablet. It has many USB outlets to charge up devices. Has great performances. Seats are very comfortable and has presets adapting for each driver. Great sound system. My only problem is my rear passenger tire must have a slow valve leak that will be fixed on my next oil change. Easy operation of dashboard computer that helps with reminding me of what percentage is left on oil change, tire pressure, speed, triptik, mileage. Great all wheel drive that is good for our snowy region. I would highly recommend the Chevy trax!

It is a awesome little awd crossover.
The chevy trax is like having a car with the benefits of a suv. It has a lot of space for hauling stuff. With all the seats down I could fit in a dish washer and many other items. 8 ft 2x4's, trim and even a long 8 ft cabinet. 5 grandkids on a road trip. One with a booster seat. I love to keep the back seats down and be able to set one up for one person.

Super secure and safe feeling car.
It is a super comfortable and secure vehicle to drive! It is nice and compact for an SUV with a lot of compartments for storage. It has yet to give me any issues so far, although, it has not even been a year since I purchased it. Drives smooth and I feel safe and secure while driving it. Overall, a great car!

Chevy trax 8-10 gas saver and lots of modern features.
I love everything about this model except size. It is a little too compact for my preference. However, it is gas friendly, has a rear camera, hatchback is not my favorite either but convenient storage space, and has a smooth ride. I would say this is a nice car for a female college student. I have a toddler and there is not much space for us both.

Spacious, comfortable, and good for small families.
I love my Chevy trax. It is the perfect size for me and my husband. Not too small, not too big. It is good on gas. This is a three year lease though and we have come to find that the backseat does not fit a full size car seat. We take care of our little niece sometimes. So after this lease we will probably upgrade to a bigger vehicle. But I do love this car. It is comfortable and spacious on the inside though the exterior may not show it. It is quite deceiving.

Front seats to small for comfort
This car has the worst design of front seats. The bottom seat has raised leather sides that make it to small for comfort. The back of the seat causes my shirt to ride up while driving. There is just no position to get comfortable , will be getting rid of this tiny shoe box asap.

Chevy trax pulls to the right.
The car has head steering problems from the beginning, pulls to the right, and also had a bent rear wheel axle that needed replaced. I brought it to the dealership 4 times and they said that they have had prior problems with the Chevy trax pulling to the right.

It is a basic SUV the best thing about the vehicle is that it has CarPlay.
It is not comfortable. It drives rough for a 2020. I also hate the fact that it is very basic and the wind blows you all over the road. Wouldn't recommend! My back killed me for 3 days after a 2hr ride. You feel very cramped it is just not something I would recommend.

Safety
While driving my 2020 trax today the check engine light came on along with other warnings. It wouldn’t show my speed, the a/c was no longer cold and then it just shut completely down. I waited a few minutes and started it back up and now it’s fine.

And honest review of the Chevy trax.
Small car, but spacious trunk when back seats are put down. Comfortable seats. Does not have cruise control, and has small gas tanks. Not great for road trips. It does have OnStar services and android or iPhone feature for radio and connecting phone.
accountCircle Robert R
Chevy trax is overall a good family car but I believe you get what you pay for.
Does not have cruise control, and it is kind of slow for a newer car, does not take of fast very inconvenient but overall it is got plenty of space inside but the seats are not comfortable and with no cruise control I would not like driving too far in it, overall I give it a 5 out of 10.
accountCircle Teresa L
The troubles with my 2020 trax.
The car does not have a center counsel, nor does it have an adjustable arm rest on the passenger side. It also bothers me that you have to really push hard to make sure the doors latch properly. When you open them, water drains from the bottom of them. I liked my dodge journey much better.
accountCircle Bud Erhard
It's alright
I've been driving the car for 4 months. Bought it new. It's zippy and does well on fuel mileage. The buttons for the A/C and recirculate buttons are difficult to see whether they are on or off in certain light. Well basically you can see them in certain light. As other reviews on youtube stated, that center console for the driver is right up against your leg. I'm 5'4" so it's not too big deal but if I was bigger it would bother me. Plus when I bought, it shifted nice but after about 1k miles it started getting bumpy. Now it's bumpy all the time.

What Do Critics Say About the Chevy Trax?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2020 Chevy Trax offers impressive fuel economy paired with a versatile interior while getting average owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Chevy Trax at 4/5, praising the standard entertainment technology features, but doesn’t like the slow acceleration.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Trax a 3.8/5, enjoying the spacious interior for its size, but owners don’t like the lack of standard driver aids.

What Common Problems Does the 2020 Chevrolet Trax Have?

Common problems found on the 2020 Chevrolet Trax include rapid brake wear, service stabilitrak messages, along with water leaking into the spare wheel compartment. Overall, these problems are similar to other compact SUVs from the same year, with average repair costs as they age.

Rapid brake wear is the most common complaint from 2020 Trax owners in the first 15,000 miles. The front brake pads in particular tend to wear down quicker than some other cars. Replacing the front brake pads costs around $150, and there are some longer-lasting brake pads available which cost roughly $200.

A service stabilitrak message is another issue reported by Trax owners at around 50,000 miles. This light means that there’s a problem with the electronic brake control module which will need to be diagnosed by a shop. It can be anything from a simple damaged fuse, all the way up to an issue with the actual brake booster. Repairs can cost $30 to $400, depending on the source.

Water leaking into the spare wheel compartment is another problem mentioned by Chevy Trax owners in the first 1,000 miles. Usually the problem is simply caused by a worn out seal at the bottom of the compartment. Replacing the seal is easy and usually covered under warranty, if the SUV is out of warranty then it’s around $50.

There are no recalls on the 2020 Chevy Trax, which is better than other small SUVs. Having no recalls just means Chevrolet has not found any serious safety issues which would warrant a recall.

How Long Will the 2020 Chevrolet Trax Last?

A well-maintained 2020 Chevy Trax can last around 200,000 miles, which is about 100,000 miles less than the long-lasting Toyota RAV4. Regular annual maintenance costs are similar to other small SUVs, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $435 per year.

As a used 2020 Chevrolet Trax reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the oil pan gasket for $400, transmission shift cable costing $235, along with the steering knuckle which costs around $450.

accountCircle Tammy W

No problems at all great for a small family has heat seats and has OnStar with protection plan lots of upgrades.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is very good in the 2020 Chevy Trax with a standard 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality. Optional upgrades include a more powerful stereo system from Bose.

Standard safety technology is worse than other compact SUVs from 2020, only offering a rearview camera.

Optional driver assistance features include:

  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Forward collision warning
  • Rear parking sensors
  • Lane departure warning
  • Rear cross traffic alert

Is the 2020 Chevrolet Trax a Good Value?

Yes, the 2020 Chevrolet Trax is a decent value if you’re in the market for a more budget-focused compact SUV. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $16,625 to $20,175, making it less than a Honda CR-V or Mazda CX-5. When new, the price range was $21,300 to $29,100. Depreciation is worse than some other SUVs, losing around 12% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Chevy Trax?

There are three models of the 2020 Chevy Trax offered, from the base LS all the way through to the more luxurious Premier. The Trax is also offered with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

What Engines Come In the Chevy Trax?

The engine found in the 2020 Chevy Trax is a relatively weak 1.4L 4-cylinder which makes 138 horsepower at up to 26 MPG. It comes standard with a six-speed automatic transmission. Performance is poor, taking 9.3 seconds to go from 0-60 MPH.

What Colors Does the Chevy Trax Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Chevy Trax?

The 2020 Chevrolet Trax is designed with comfort in mind and offers a lot of features that are intended to enhance the driving experience. The seats are supportive and provide ample room for both the driver and passengers, even on longer trips. The interior is well-appointed, with high-quality materials and a stylish design that helps to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

In terms of ride comfort, the Trax is known for offering a smooth and stable ride, even on rough roads. The suspension system does a good job of absorbing road imperfections, and the steering is well-weighted, which helps to provide a confident and secure feeling behind the wheel. Additionally, the 2020 Trax is equipped with a lot of features that can help to reduce road noise and wind noise, making for a quieter and more comfortable ride.

How Much Storage Space Does the Chevy Trax Have?

Behind the rear seats, the Trax has 18.7 cubic feet of cargo space. This space is ideal for storing items such as grocery bags, small suitcases, or other smaller items. The rear seats can be folded down to increase cargo space to 48.4 cubic feet. This provides ample space for larger items such as furniture, sports equipment, or even some appliances.

In addition to the cargo space, the Trax has several other storage options throughout the interior. The front center console provides a large storage area under the armrest, which is perfect for storing your wallet, phone, or other personal items. The door pockets and seat pockets provide additional storage space for items such as drinks, books, or maps.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The first generation of the Chevy Trax came out for the 2015 model year.

2015: All-new small crossover SUV model launched which falls below the Chevy Equinox.

2016: No changes from earlier years.

2017: Standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto across all models, minor exterior styling changes.

2018: Updated Chevy MyLink stereo system added.

2019: No major changes.

2020: Midnight edition package removed.

2021: Premier model removed from the lineup, new engine offered near the end of the model year.

How Does the Chevy Trax Compare to the Competition?

The 2020 Chevrolet Trax is a decent compact SUV for shoppers looking for something on a budget, although it’s not as nice as some of the other options on the market since it’s missing the latest safety technology.

The Ford EcoSport is another small SUV which is roughly $1,500 less. Where the EcoSport stands out is with some more responsive steering, while the Chevy Trax has better interior materials. We recommend the Chevy Trax since overall it’s a nicer SUV and worth the extra money.

The Buick Encore is a competitor which is available for around $2,000 more. Both the Buick Encore and Chevy Trax are built on the same platform, while the Buick Encore has a much nicer interior and more advanced technology. We recommend the Buick Encore since you get a lot more for your money.

I LOVE my Trax Premier!!!!! Comfortable seats and a lot of things our 2013 Chevy Equinox has - and our Equinox is LOADED. Lost of room when the back seats are collapsed for hauling things. It’s great for me - I am the only driver. 4 cylinder is different than our 6 Equinox, but that’s ok with me.

Great and safe vehicle for new drivers!
The interior of the car is very comfortable and the ls trim is very minimalist. I like the suspension on the car and I feel safe driving the vehicle during the winter months. Despite its small appearance, this car can carry a lot and it is very easy to convert the back seats into additional truck space.

Great little SUV with a big ride feel.
I really like my Chevrolet trax. It is a compact SUV that feels anything but not compact. It gives a luxurious ride that does not feel like it is actual size. It has all the features of a very luxury vehicle but it has very nice price tag. I feel like a very proud owner.

Small, compact but reliable.
It is very compact. Not a lot of back seat space. The back seats do fold down if needed for storage or hauling something. Your “trunk” area is decent. Driver has an arm rest, passenger side does not. It is very reliable. Comfortable. Driver and passenger seats adjustable. Cruise control. Bluetooth.

I love my car... However it is a true compact car. Inside and the trunk area. The features are standard to the car, no extravagant features. Very reliable car. I have not had any issues. The car is good on gas as well. I would recommend this car to a single or small family. Great car overall.

I find the Chevy trax to be extremely comfortable and reliable. I have not noticed the engine to be underpowered as some say. It also gets great mileage. I like how the rear seats fold down completely flat, as does the front passenger seat making it great for transporting longer items. There is ample room for my five dogs that range in size from 40 lbs to 90 lbs.

The trax: function without luxury.
My vehicle is not the greatest I have had, but I still do enjoy it. The car does not have a whole lot of horsepower, and it has a hard time speeding up. I enjoy the visibility of my car in terms of blind spots, the rear window, and the front window. I also enjoy the size of the car because it is compact, and I never have issues with parking, particularly in urban areas. However, the car is not too small to the point where I cannot fit anything in my car. Of course, I cannot move large things in my vehicle, but I can fit a fair amount of things for groceries and large home items (I recently was moving houses, so I got to test it).

Meh.. Just a plain old boring very small car.
This car is very small, it has no interior room to carry anything. It has minimal pick up. Very little get up and go. No bells and whistles. It gets good gas mileage but that's about the only good thing about it. Would not buy this car again. It's pretty plain.

Very small, okay on gas. It is very comfortable seating for the tiniest of tax. The trunk is pretty small. But it gets the job done. I have two car seats in back and there is basically no middle seat. The touchscreen is pretty cool and I enjoy that I can plug my phone into the USB and get my google maps off my. Phone instead of having navigation.

I like the color of the car as it sticks out from other cars.
I just miss my other car which was a Toyota rav4. The features are nice but some things need to be fixed such as adding an option for a CD player, adding more storage in the front of the car, the wheels are small for the build of the car. So far the comfort is nice as it has adjustable seat positioning and support for the back. The car is reliable thus far and the comfort is not too bad however the passenger seat seems congested and not roomy enough. I like the features however I miss my CD player and middle storage console. I wish the car had heated seats or a steering wheel and that the trunk had an automatic close button.

SUV trax, apple car play along with Wi-Fi.
Haven't had any problems with this vehicle I have had it for about 3 weeks now it is very spacious and smooth ride has Wifi through onstar. The car also has apple play so u can connect your phone and you will have your maps and calls and text messages that without looking at your phone u can have the radio read your text when you get one.

Our new trax it is a comfy ride.
It is comfortable, roomy, I would change the fact they do not have an arm rest for the passenger. And I would also like to be able to raise and lower the passenger seat. I like the tinted back windows. We didn't get leather seats which for me is better because I hate sticking in summer or freezing in winter.

Like the backup camera when I am backing up.
I purchased the trax in may and have had no problems with it. At first I didn't think it sounded right but the people at the dealership said it was fine. New vehicle had to get use to it. Like the backup camera although still have trouble remembering to look there. I think General Motors shouldn't charge extra for cruise control. It was standard in my 2013 sonic.

Best beginner car out there.
The Chevy trax is a great beginner car. It is spacious, easy to drive, and compact for great parking. It has Bluetooth and apple car play as well as automatic headlights. It also contains a camera to aid you when reversing. Overall, the track is a great model for a first time car buyer.

My vehicle is black. The interior seats are made with leather.
No problems with the vehicle so far. Very good for road trips. While the car itself is pretty small the interior has so much to offer for your everyday travels. I would very much recommend this car to anyone who lives and on-the-go lifestyle. Very compact but, spacious car.

Great gas mileage, concerning electronics.
I just purchased my Chevy trax about a month and a half ago. The computer started glitching right away and the dealer is replacing it next week. Hopefully better luck with the next one. Other than that, the inside is pretty spacious for a smaller SUV and great gas mileage!

Chevy read, the cheap affordable mom car.
My vehicle does not have cruise control. As a family woman the car is not very roomy on the backseat and it is difficult to make room in the trunk. Aside from that is a great casual day to day car, rides nicely, and is affordable for a good budget. We like it.

Great for winter with small hitches.
Ideal for winter driving. It has a remote start & 4wd. It also has newer technology like apple CarPlay, lane assist and a back-up camera. Back windshield wiper. Unfortunately no heated seats and you have to open trunk manually. The break system is also very touchy.

2020 Chevy trax gray. Sleek.
The gas mileage is amazing. I like how high the vehicle is. It rides very smooth. My only complaint about this car is when you hit the gas, it does not take off very fast at all. It only takes off slow. It also idles a lot. The inside is very fashionable. I have some great phone capabilities. It has Wi-Fi and OnStar.

More room than you think just by looking at it great SUV.
It has been a great car with no problems. Easy to use has all the bells and whistles. Looking at the SUV it look small but has a lot of room inside for me and a friend my 1 100 lb dogs and camping equipment. Gas mileage is great. Even with it being a 4 cylinder it has plenty of power to get you going when you need it.

Small SUV with lots of room.
I do not have any problems. It is very comfortable. Great gas mileage. I love the Bluetooth for my phone so I can be hands free. I love the backup camera. It has anti theft system. It is a small SUV but lots of room. Drives great. It is a beautiful gray color. Easy to handle.

Tint on the back windows and rear windshield. Great Bose speakers, great on gas.
My car is very reliable. It drives smoothly, but it does not accelerate quickly. At times when trying to release the break the car jumps forward. The car is good on gas and has a back up camera. It is nice inside, a compact SUV. It has a hatchback with ample space. Does not have anything to use for towing cars.

Love my trax! Perfect size.
I love my little SUV! I have had my trax for about a year now, and she’s perfect for what I need! It is very comfortable, very reliable, and super cute! Great gas mileage! I do wish the trunk was a little bigger. Other than that I love it and I will be sad to give it back at the end of my lease!
