2014 Chevrolet Traverse Review: Unreliable Large SUV With Electrical Problems

Alex Showalter
Sep 27, 2022

The 2014 Chevrolet Traverse lasts around 200,000 miles with some serious electrical and transmission issues. At $14,320 to $16,110, it’s cheap, but not really worth it when the same parts fail repeatedly.

Suspension is smooth, there’s plenty of cargo space and the optional second row captain’s chairs are comfortable.
dislikeFilled The Bad
V6 engine is weaker than other large SUVs, reliability ratings are poor and the touchscreen stereo system is slow.

Is the 2014 Chevrolet Traverse a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 6/10 – 2014 is a bad year for the Traverse since there are still engine issues, giving it a low overall score. Owner reviews complain about high ownership costs, stabilitrak problems, and small third row.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 7/10 – Interior materials are better than they were in older Traverse models, the seats are soft yet supportive, cargo space is also generous.
  • Reliability 5/10 – The 2014 Traverse has a lot of engine and transmission problems reported. Avoid models from 2009-2014 which have issues. We recommend going with a 20152020, which are more reliable.
  • Performance 5/10 – The V6 engine is weaker than the V8s found on most other full size SUVs. The towing capacity is lower than average at only 5,200 pounds.
  • Safety 9/10 – Safety is one category where the Traverse excels with perfect 5-star ratings in government crash tests. It also has OnStar crash notification, blind spot monitoring, a rearview camera, forward collision, and lane departure warning systems.
  • Gas Mileage 5/10 – Fuel economy is bad at 19 MPG, giving it about 418 miles of range out of the 22 gallon gas tank. Gas costs are $12 higher than average at $248 per month.
  • Value 6/10 – The Traverse is cheaper than other full size SUVs, however, you’ll spend a lot of money keeping it running over the years, making it a bad value proposition.

My 2014 Traverse is an amazing red with silver door handles. My red robin.
Right now, my biggest problem with the Traverse is the amount of gas usage within the city. It does a lot better on interstate. I love the space it provides. My last two siblings and I love to attend football games and tailgate. We're retired and like to spend as much time as we can together.

Good looking, versatile mom car.
This is my favorite vehicle that I have ever had. It drives great, and is very safe. A strong safety rating was very important to me as well as flexibility. The back seats are very easy to move as needed for hauling kids or stuff. It is very versatile and l do not feel like I am driving an ugly mom vehicle. It is a good looking car!

It's all new to me so it's hard to say anything wrong at this point. I only had it for 2 months

Third row seating! Fold down for maximum carrying of larger items!
My vehicles name is Toby. Toby has been reliable since we have owned him. The only issues I have had was the air conditioning and wheel bearings. Toby is a third row seater and I have teenage boys it's nice to have that third row. I use Sirius XM. I can say the gas mileage could be a little better.

It has a smooth ride and handles well on the freeway.
I Like the way it drives. The size fits my family good. I like the different features that it has.

Fantastic family car. Highly recommend.
No problems. We love our car. There was one time where it leaked, but we found it was the mechanic who didn't seal it up correctly. It drives very smoothly. Very spacious for our family. Lots of storage space. We also love the color, and style, material of seats and how quiet the car is when driving it.

That it is a great vehicle, all around. Comfortable, safe, reliable.
I absolutely love how much space my vehicle has on the inside. Also love the seats that fold down so I can carry lots of stuff in the back. Also love that it can carry 8 passengers. That comes in handy with 3 kids and lots of friends.
accountCircle Marjorie B
You can haul a lot of stuff or people in it.
We bought it for our bicycles. It is large enough to easily hold both bicycles when the second and third seat are folded down. It is large enough to take up to eight people on trips with our family. It is very comfortable and easy to drive. It does not get as good gas mileage as I would like.

2014 Chevy traverse review.
We have never had any mechanical problems but I would never buy this car again first it has 3rd row seating but it very small on the inside second the gas mileage isn't that great overall the money you would spend on this you could buy a larger SUV for a better deal.

Chevy stabilitrak horrible.
Bought used, multiple problems, brought in several times for same issue, stability track told it was fixed and is not. Chevrolet traction control and stabilitrak is the worst feature I have ever had in a vehicle. Layout of car is nice and roomy but have the vehicle check and if buying used get an extended warranty.
accountCircle Andy M
Be prepared to fill up twice a week for around $60. 00.
Honestly, a one time it was probably a great car, but I bought it preowned. The temp switch for the backseat gets scalding hot for no reason and I guess someone put an aftermarket radio in it that messed up the entire electrical system. I have zero traction control. And it drinks gas like it is freaking water.
accountCircle Jessica C
I love how spacious it is, and love the seat warmers.
Chevrolet 2014 has malfunctioning traction control problem, and stabilitrak light comes on as well. The car shakes really bad when you go past 30 to 40 mph on the freeway. The car tends to shake as you are driving, also the airbag light would come on. But the airbag has not popped out.

Big family car but too big
The traverse is wide and barely fits in parking spots. There are quite a few blind spots. I'm short and my husband is above average in height and he too has problems with the blind spots. The car has always hesitated on switching gears. Mechanic has never found anything wrong with it. The doors open wide. It isn't convenient when you are trying to get kids out of car seats and you barely have room. The car is so wide. I'm considering a minivan for my next car because I'm so sick of the car doors. The car is wide but there is more room in the middle seat in my other SUV.
accountCircle Melissa S
2014 traverse: surprise! Car battery is in the interior of the vehicle itself.
The car has chronic fuel injector timing issues. The controls in the interior are in weird nonsensical places and trying to adjust the driver or passenger seats is a herculean task. Seating is actually comfortable and interior is spacious. Turning radius is poor. Honestly, I probably wouldn't recommend this vehicle to a friend.
accountCircle Joe T
Overall not bad, other than slight mechanical issues.
Front passenger wheel bearing has gone bad twice now in less than 1 year. Bluetooth capable and the heated seats are a nice touch also. Three rows of seating makes it a perfect family car. The third row folds down for ample storage space. The car also comes standard with a first aid kit.

Traverse- Yikes! Don't waste your money
The vehicle seems to be cheaply made. The interior seats are uncomfortable, when a rear window is down, the front seat windows must be down as well or you'll experience a severe pressure noise. The headlights burn out fast, tires wore out at 35k. The plastic hatch light broke within 10k miles.

What Do Critics Say About the Chevy Traverse?

  • Consumer Reports says the Traverse feels more like a cheap minivan than an SUV, with terrible owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Traverse at 3.8/5 and enjoys the smooth ride on the roads, although they don’t like the stereo system.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Traverse a 4.2/5 praising the passenger space, but owners don’t like the low towing capacity.

What Common Problems Does the 2014 Chevrolet Traverse Have?

Common problems found on the 2014 Chevy Traverse include a loss of power while driving, airbag sensor issues, and the transmission jerking while shifting between gears. Overall, these problems are more severe than other large SUVs from 2014. Repair costs are higher than average as well.

A loss of power while driving is the most widespread complaint from owners at around 65,000 miles. A failing fuse box causes the entire SUV to lose all electrical power, eventually stalling while driving. The fuse box costs about $700 to replace, depending on local labor rates.

Air bag sensors are another issue that shows up on a lot of Traverse models at around 78,000 miles. The “service airbag” light will turn on when one of the sensors is failing. Some of the sensors are covered by a service policy which extends the warranty on the sensors. If the failing sensor isn’t covered it’s around $300 to replace.

The transmission jerking while shifting between gears is also reported by owners at around 50,000 miles. Owners report both hesitation and stuttering as it goes from one gear to the next. The transmission control module is the source of the problem, costing around $1,200 to replace.

There are 6 recalls, most are average compared to other large SUVs from 2014. The most serious recall is for the transmission shift cable, which can break and prevent you from going into park. Many of the other recalls are for air bags which are common on all models.

How Long Will the 2014 Chevrolet Traverse Last?

A well-maintained 2014 Chevy Traverse should last around 200,000 miles, which is about 150,000 miles less than the top-rated Toyota Sequoia. Regular annual maintenance costs are slightly more expensive than average, according to Repair Pal, at $549 per year.

Nearly all used 2014 Chevy Traverse models will have over 100,000 miles, so buyers should be prepared to replace the A/C compressor for $900, oil pressure sensor costing $350, and the control arms which cost around $550.

accountCircle Teresa O

We have owned this vehicle for almost 3 years and have not had any major problems. We do regular maintenance on it.

accountCircle K K

Yes it is very reliable. Have not experienced any problems so far and hopefully will not experience any problems.

accountCircle AURORA M

So far it is reliable I have not had any problems with my car. I love the back up camera and the quality of the engine runs really good.

accountCircle Dianna G

Yes the Chevy traverse is very reliable and no it does not have any problems. I would recommend the Chevy traverse to family oriented people who need room for everyone.

accountCircle Mike B

My car is over five years old and I have not experienced any mechanical issues whatsoever. The car has been very reliable.

accountCircle Rebekka J

Mine has not had very many problems other than normal maintenance. I did have issues with a sensor in the gas pedal going bad needed the petal replaced it would randomly cut power to the engine and say service stabilitrak.

accountCircle Debra A

The traverse is very reliable. I got it used and it still works great with hardly any issues. The gas mileage is great during long trips. The only problem I have right now is the heat starting to go out but that is a minor issue to me. No major issues and works great.

accountCircle Florian F

So far, it has been very reliable. Due to the size of it, the gas mileage is not great, but I've never had a mechanical issue with it.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is good in the 2014 Chevy Traverse with a standard 6.5-inch touchscreen display along with Bluetooth & USB connectivity. The safety technology is better than average as well, with a standard rearview camera. Optional safety features include blind spot monitoring, forward collision alert, and lane departure warning systems.

Is the 2014 Chevrolet Traverse a Good Value?

No, the 2014 Chevy Traverse is not a good value since there are relatively expensive mechanical problems. Blue book prices range from $14,320 to $16,110, making it cheaper than a Chevy Tahoe or Ford Expedition. When new, the price range was $30,795 to $41,255. Depreciation is similar to average, losing about 11% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Chevy Traverse?

There are three main models of the Chevy Traverse offered for 2014, from the base LS all the way up to the more luxurious LTZ.

LS is the entry-level model with:

  • 17-Inch Steel Wheels
  • Cloth Seating
  • Keyless Entry
  • OnStar Communication
  • 5-Inch Touchscreen
  • Rearview Camera
  • 6-Speaker Stereo System

LT is a step up, adding:

  • 18-Inch Alloy Wheels
  • Heated Mirrors
  • Remote Ignition
  • Power Driver’s Seat
  • Tri-Zone Climate Control
  • MyLink App Connectivity

LTZ is the luxury model which adds:

  • 20-Inch Wheels
  • Leather Seating

What Engines Come In the Chevy Traverse?

  • The engine found in the Chevy Traverse is an average 3.6L V6 which makes 281 horsepower while getting up to 19 MPG. Performance is average, taking 8.1 seconds to go from 0-60 MPH.
  • The LTZ model has an upgraded exhaust which increases power from the same engine to 288 horsepower.

What Colors Does the Chevy Traverse Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Chevy Traverse?

The 2014 Chevy Traverse is a very comfortable full size SUV with seating for up to 8 passengers. Seating in the Traverse is very supportive, and the optional second row captain’s chairs are plush.

Passenger room is good throughout the cabin with enough room for adults in the third row, however, some taller adults complain about having limited legroom.

How Much Storage Space Does the Chevy Traverse Have?

Cargo space is average for an SUV of its size, with enough room for 4-5 suitcases behind the third row, 10-12 behind the second row, and well over 20 with all the seats folded flat.

VehicleHistory Image

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The first generation of the Chevy Traverse was launched in 2009, which was replaced by the second generation in 2018.

2012: No major changes.

2013: Minor exterior styling refreshes, higher-quality interior materials added.

2014: More USB ports, and LTZ gets forward collision & lane departure warning systems.

2015: Siri eyes-free voice control added to stereo system.

2016: 4G LTE with WiFi hot spot added, and new entry-level LS model.

2017: LTZ model had its name changed to Premier.

2018: Fully redesigned for the second generation with an all-new interior, exterior and engines.

How Does the Chevy Traverse Compare to the Competition?

The Chevrolet Traverse is a mediocre large SUV compared to other SUVs on the market, which offer more room, better reliability ratings, along with stronger V8 engines.

The Ford Explorer is a popular competitor from Ford, which costs about $500 more. Off-road performance is a bit better in the Ford Explorer, but the Chevy Traverse has more room in the third row. We recommend the Ford Explorer since they have lower ownership costs and fewer mechanical issues.

The Chevrolet Equinox is a smaller SUV made by Chevy, which costs about $2,000 less. Performance is better in the Chevy Equinox, however, the Chevy Traverse has significantly more passenger room. We recommend the Chevy Equinox since ownership costs are lower, although neither are great SUVs.

GM does not stand behind their product
LOVED my 2014 Traverse. Bought it brand new and maintained it regularly. Air conditioning crapped out after about 7 years. Then at 9 years, engine suddenly completely crashed—at 58k miles! Two different service garages both said needs a whole engine replaced—for $10k! GM offered to cover $1k. I said no way, sold it back to the dealer as is, cut my losses, and will never buy another Chevy again. I’m heartbroken because I really loved my car.

Engine failure
Faithful Chevy driver for 50 years. Followed all service schedules. Was used as a second car and loved it until the engine had a catastrophic failure at 104,000 miles. Dealer would not repair the engine. Their recommendation was a new engine. Per the dealer it is a common problem. Totally killed my confidence in Chevy and GM.

All purpose family vehicle.
It is a good family car with plenty of room for us and our 4 kids. We like the dual climate controls so people in the back can set their own temperature; however, it would be better if it were in the back rather than the middle row as the younger kids cannot reach the controls from their booster seats. The back and middle rows of seats are easy to fold down and back up for when we need to haul a bunch of stuff.

Nice sized SUV with a great gas confusion rate.
It's a nice sized vehicle that doesn't consume a lot of gas. Also, it comes with built in back camera and OnStar. A really unique design that pops out on the road. The only issue is because of the build, it is a little fatter than most vehicles in the SUV department.

The 2014 traverse is a solid vehicle that sometimes has little flukes.
The vehicle often times stuttered while driving and the problem cannot seem to be pinpointed. But for the most part it is lastly beautifully these past couple of years with no damages. The seatbelts in the backseat are extremely locked and uncomfortable if the passenger is a little wider than a small child.

Why I like my traverse and the best features.
I love my vehicle. It has been great to haul extra stuff on trips. When people are in the back seats they have plenty of legroom. In addition, it is reliable. It could be better on gas mileage but it is ok. I also like the fact that I sit higher up, especially when driving on the freeway.

Perfect family car for daily use and long trips.
The Chevy traverse has been a high quality vehicle for our household. The only mechanical issue was a replacement part of the air conditioner which stopped working. This car has been incredibly reliable, is very comfortable for family trips, is a great daily driver. The features leave nothing to want for with all of the 'bells and whistles' covered. The fold flat seats and heated steering wheel are my two favorite features. My 4 year old I am sure would say his favorite is the built in TV/DVD player. The headphones are able to be used to keep the radio going for those who do not want to continue hearing the movie that is losing.

Great SUV wish it was comfy.
It does not ride very smooth and it is bumpy even though it is a SUV. I wish the seats were more comfortable. I see to have a lot of system issues that always need fixed. Currently my windows will not go up and down and it's an electronic system thing. Wish it got better gas mileage.

Great vehicle with storage and comfort.
We have leather interior so easy to clean. The seats are comfortable and adjustable with 2 heated seat options which are great. Two more separate seats in second row and small(2 person) seat as third row so can carry up to 6 people. The trunk area is spacious and the back two rows of seats will flatten for a large cargo space when needed. I do wish it had a heated steering wheel and maybe cooling seats for summer but I think that is more on us than the brand as you get the options you buy. Overall I would buy the same brand again and would recommend to families of 6 or less.

There are separate heating and air conditioning controls in the back seat.
The traverse is great for many riders and the features are nice. However, because of its size and cylinder it is not good on gas. Perfect family car you'll never want to trade.
This is the best vehicle I have ever had. It is perfect for large families with the addition of the third row. When not in use the third row collapses flush with the floor. It also has the option of only bringing up one or two seats from the third row maximizing your space. The vehicle is all wheel drive and handles like a tank on winter roads. The clearance especially comes in handy on winter roads that do not get plowed. The seats are leather making for easy cleanup, but are also heated and cooled along with the steering wheel. I am not sure I will ever be able to not have a traverse again.

There is plenty of space for a family of 6 to go on rides (but maybe not long vacations with lots of luggage)
I like everything except my steering wheel only has a forward button for scanning the radio and not a back button. It makes it difficult to navigate the radio at times.

I just highlighted my answer in the previous comments.
My Traverse is just a wonderful riding vehicle. It is roomy to carry huge items as well as groceries. The seats fold down to make the extra storage. It is just a great vehicle. It is great on gas mileage and provides a smooth ride. Will definitely look at buying another Traverse.

Chevy traverse: just what I needed!
It is really perfect for my needs. It is spacious and there's plenty of cargo space for whatever I need to transport. It is a smooth ride and the banking system is extremely helpful for me. My niece and nephew love the DVD system. It really helps keep them occupied during car trips.

It is a work horse, also dependable and comfortable.
Easy to get in and very easy to drive. Has lots of things to do to get things to work. I do not know of anything I dislike.

I love that I can Bluetooth my phone and send quick text.
The car is very spacious. You can remove seats or put seats down. It has its own controls for heating in the back. Some of the best features are the heated seats in the front and it does have an automatic starter which makes it really nice for winter time.

The traverse is a great family vehicle.
My traverse has a third row and leather interior. It is very spacious and seats 7 people comfortably. It has remote start which is great to warm up on cold mornings. It has heated seats and the back doors only open from the outside so my kids cannot open the door by themselves. The cargo is spacious even with the third row up.

Roomy, comfortable, reliable
Extremely comfortable. Very spacious. My Traverse has been very reliable, I have never had any mechanical problems. It is also good on gas mileage. The back up camera is very helpful. I also love onstar and XM radio. There is enough room for my family with 2 car seats for my Grandchildren.

Regular upkeep and maintenance and you should be good to go.
I like all the extra space for cargo and people. I like sitting up in the SUV. I like the all wheel drive feature. Very good for the winters we have around here.

Has been very dependable.
It is the perfect size. With only one automobile, and not a truck to haul things, my traverse allows me to haul many different kinds and sizes of items. It is not too big and not too small, very comfortable and stylish.

The best vehicle for growing families!
This car is perfect for my family of 5. The third row provides the space needed so we don't feel cramped. We bring our dogs and kids to the park without feeling stuffed and we've driven long distances without being uncomfortable. The back still provides enough room for extras. I haven't had any issues with the performance of this vehicle. Perfect family vehicle.

Sleek on the road, comfortable and looks good. Has not been in the shop not once.
I have had no problems with my traverse. I bought it to haul furniture and it really comes in handy. It is comfortable, reliable and looks good on the road. My next car will definitely be a Chevrolet traverse. It is reliability is above all and I have owned a Lexus and Mercedes. I would still choose the traverse.

Fun to drive, and a lot of safety features.
There are no problems, and is fun to drive, easy to get in and out, have child seat, very easy to install, taken on long trips and is very enjoyable and is comfortable and safe, has seven airbags, three rows of seats and enough room for plenty of luggage.

My favorite vehicle is my traverse.
I just purchased this vehicle about months ago. Love the comfort of it, it has 2 sunroofs, heated seats, touch screen radio. Easy on gas. Has the third row seat which is a must with having five in our family. Has powered seats. Nice and roomy. Would recommend this vehicle to anyone. I love it.

The worst 2014 car models.
Overall I would not recommend this vehicle for beginner drivers. This vehicle is not good on gas and almost every month I have to get something fixed on it. And it has costed me over 850 a month for gas and for repairs. Other than that the color availability, and models are great but I would avoid the 2014 models and get a newer one.

The comfort is the best. Lots of legroom even for your passengers in the back.
I just love my car! I have leather heated seats, remote start, a great audio Bose speaker system and it is very comfortable. I have no problem piling in friends and ever was able to move a 60” TV from one home to another by just dropping the backseat!
