The 2020 Chevrolet Malibu lasts around 200,000 miles with some brake wear and engine sensor issues reported. At $17,575 to $25,998, it’s cheaper than most other midsize sedans, making it a good choice for shoppers on a budget.

There’s more passenger room than other sedans, the touchscreen has a lot of great technology and the suspension is smooth.
dislikeFilled The Bad
There are not a lot of standard safety features, the rear seats are not the most supportive and visibility is poor with the large pillars.

Is the 2020 Chevrolet Malibu a Good Used Car?

  • Overall Rating 7/10 – 2020 is a good year for the Chevy Malibu, although it still isn’t as nice as some other midsize sedans giving it an average score. Owner reviews praise the spacious cabin, nice stereo system, along with the low ownership costs.

Blue Chevrolet Malibu 2020.
I got the Chevrolet Malibu towards the beginning of this year 2020. Nice blue car with a wing on the back for that sporty look. Tinted windows with rims to finish it off. It is a good car love how it rides smoothly and everything. It is just perfect for me!

2020 Malibu details and information.
Very nice car. Decent pick up from a stop and I average 250 miles/ wk at 33.8 mpg. Syncs nicely with the navigation apps on my phone. Trunk space it is very large but trunk opening can be tight with larger suitcases or boxes as it is relatively small. Drivers space is nice and roomy as I am 6'2 and 350 lbs but fit in no problem.

One nice part of the car is there is no lid on the gas cap to twist off.
The look of the interior is very sleek and modern. The features were really nice including heated seats and Bluetooth. My personal favorite technology feature is being able to talk to people on the phone using the Bluetooth set up. I am not a fan of the auto start stop feature because it does create a slight lag when trying to hit the gas after stopping at a stop light. I also love the sunroof and I had it open every time I was driving in nice weather. The overall car is very nice and would most definitely recommend it to others.

Love the Chevy Malibu, will always be the car of my choice.
I have had no problems. I love the car. It is quick and comfortable. The seats feel amazing and it is loaded with some awesome features. I have always owned Chevy and always will. My kids love the car as well. The only thing I wish I had done different is get it in a different color.

Love Chevy and this is 2nd Malibu purchase.
This is the second new Malibu I have had the pleasure of purchasing and driving. Extremely comfortable, lots of luxury options, and the ability to turn off auto-stop function was a great addition to this year model. Has nice acceleration due to the standard turbo they have added to the vehicle's motor.

Very reliable and comfortable. Great for a single person or small family. Options for color helped to personalize the purchase. Have had no problems to date. Warranty option with the new vehicle was good to have. Very digital but easy enough to learn. Multiple options made personalization easy.

My Malibu is super reliable and amazing on gas mileage! It is great for long trips, especially because of how roomy it is! The trunk is large as well, so it is great for groceries. I am very happy with my decision to get a Malibu! I will never go back to any other brand!

Our 2020 malibu is a great car, but we have been having some issues. We Bought it in Dec of 2019 The radio screen has went black twice the screen has also froze. 2020 Chevy Malibu: review.
The only issue I have had was the check engine light has come on multiple times. I took it into the dealership and they could not find anything wrong with it. About 6 months after buying it there was a recall and I have not had an issue since then. I enjoy the touch screen monitor especially when using GPS so I do not have to look down at my phone I can just look at the monitor. My favorite feature is the heated steering wheel, that comes in handy during the cold winters. The car runs smoothly and is very quiet while driving.

I have noticed it takes a second to accelerate. I do not like that they're is not any mirror lights, or a trunk button inside, there is also this obnoxious rattle in the middle console once I hit 5000 rpm that the dealer has not been able to find. On the plus side it is great on gas and looks sleek. Other than that I wouldn't buy another.

Average man’s luxury vehicle: push-to-start engine with a built-in back camera.
I think my car’s one of the more solid ones I have driven, I mean that in a good way, I like the handling and the built-in camera’s a godsend. It is about as comfortable as can be and I like the whole push start aspect of the car, kind of makes it feel luxurious.

Pros and cons of my 2020 Malibu.
The vehicle is too technologically advanced for me. It is difficult to make a hands free phone call, it is difficult to understand the advanced auto and my Chevrolet apps... It is more than I need. However, it rides really nicely, it glides well. It is very comfortable. Love the heated seats.

What Do Critics Say About the Chevy Malibu?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2020 Chevrolet Malibu offers much more luxury than other sedans in the same price range, with average owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Malibu at 3.4/5, praising the touchscreen stereo interface, but doesn’t like the weak base engine.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Malibu a 4/5, enjoying the roomy interior, but owners don’t like how quickly it depreciates.

What Common Problems Does the 2020 Chevrolet Malibu Have?

Common problems found on the 2020 Chevy Malibu include rapid brake wear, the engine stalling, along with some issues with the fuel pump. Overall, these problems are similar to other midsize sedans, leading to average repair costs as the Malibu ages.

Rapid brake wear is the most widespread complaint from 2020 Malibu owners at around 30,000 miles. The stock brakes on the car tend to wear out quicker than other cars. Replacing the brake pads costs around $350, while a new set of rotors is roughly $600. Some people install aftermarket brake pads which last longer, costing around $400.

The engine stalling is another issue reported by Malibu owners in the first 2,500 miles. There are some issues with the mass air flow sensor on the intake, which can cause the engine to shut down while driving. Replacing the sensor is a pretty easy process, costing around $150, although when it happens so early into the ownership experience it’s usually covered under warranty.

Issues with the fuel pump also show up on some Malibu models in the first 5,000 miles. Owners have reported the fuel pump just simply failing in some models, leading to a loss of power. Replacing the fuel pump is usually covered under warranty when it happens with so few miles, although out of warranty it’s an $800 replacement.

There’s only one recall on the 2020 Chevy Malibu which is better than many other midsize sedans. It covers the seat belt retractors which were not secured properly. Chevrolet will re-install the retractors for free on affected models.

How Long Will the 2020 Chevrolet Malibu Last?

A well-maintained 2020 Chevrolet Malibu can last around 200,000 miles, which is roughly 100,000 miles less than the long-lasting Toyota Camry. Regular annual maintenance costs are slightly higher than some competitors, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $503 per year.

As a used 2020 Chevy Malibu reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the ignition switch for $150, suspension ball joint costing $300, along with the turbocharger boost sensor which costs $350.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is excellent in the 2020 Chevy Malibu with a standard 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto along with Bluetooth. Optional upgrades include a more powerful stereo system.

Standard safety technology is worse than other sedans, only offering a rearview camera on all models.

Optional driver assistance features include:

  • Forward collision warning
  • Pedestrian detection
  • Rear cross traffic Alert
  • Lane change alert
  • Parallel and perpendicular park assist
  • Lane keep assist
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Teen driver mode
  • Forward automatic emergency braking
  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Lane departure warning
  • Rear parking sensors
  • Automatic high-beam headlights

Is the 2020 Chevrolet Malibu a Good Value?

Yes, the 2020 Chevrolet Malibu is a good value since it’s cheaper than many other midsize sedans on the market. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $17,575 to $25,998, making it less than a Honda Accord or Mazda6. When new, the price range was $22,140 to $33,370. Depreciation is worse than some other sedans, losing about 12% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Chevy Malibu?

There are five versions of the 2020 Chevrolet Malibu offered, from the base L model, all the way up to the more luxurious Premier model. The Malibu is only offered with front-wheel drive.

L is the entry-level model with:

  • Alloy Wheels
  • Cloth Seating
  • Keyless Entry and Ignition
  • Rearview Camera
  • 8-Inch Touchscreen
  • Six-Speaker Sound System

LS is a step up, adding:

  • Noise-Reducing Glass
  • OnStar Connectivity
  • Optional Remote Start

RS is next in the lineup with:

  • Power-Adjustable Driver’s Seat
  • Leather-Wrapped Steering Wheel
  • Black Exterior Accents
  • Rear Spoiler
  • Larger Wheels
  • Unique Front Grille

LT adds features such as:

  • Heated Front Seats
  • Dual-Zone Climate Control
  • Sunroof

Premier is the flagship model which adds:

  • Leather Seats
  • Heated Steering Wheel
  • Power-Adjustable Passenger Seat
  • Ventilated Front Seats
  • Heated Rear Seats

What Engines Come In the Chevy Malibu?

  • The base engine is a weak 1.5L 4-cylinder which makes 163 horsepower while getting up to 32 MPG. It comes standard with a continuously available automatic transmission (CVT).
  • An available upgrade is the stronger 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder, which is good for 250 horsepower and gets up to 26 MPG. It has a nine-speed automatic transmission. Performance is good, taking 6 seconds to go from 0-60 MPH.

What Colors Does the Chevy Malibu Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Chevy Malibu?

The 2020 Chevrolet Malibu is a comfortable sedan, according to many drivers and passengers. The front seats are well-padded and offer a good amount of support, making them suitable for long drives. The rear seats also provide good comfort and legroom, making the Malibu a good choice for families or groups of friends.

Additionally, the Malibu offers a lot of features that contribute to its overall comfort level, such as automatic climate control, available heated and ventilated front seats, and an available 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat. The Malibu also offers a quiet and smooth ride, thanks to its well-isolated cabin and refined suspension system.

How Much Storage Space Does the Chevy Malibu Have?

The 2020 Chevrolet Malibu is a mid-size sedan that offers ample space for both passengers and cargo. The trunk is one of the largest storage areas in the vehicle, with a capacity of 15.8 cubic feet. This is plenty of room for a set of golf clubs, several pieces of luggage, or a few grocery bags.

For even more storage options, the Malibu has a number of smaller compartments and pockets throughout the interior. The front and rear door pockets provide a convenient place to store water bottles, snacks, or other small items. The center console storage area, which is located between the front seats, is another great place to store items such as a phone, wallet, or sunglasses. Additionally, the front armrest opens up to reveal a large storage compartment that can be used to store items such as a tablet or a purse.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The ninth generation of the Chevy Malibu came out for the 2016 model year.

2015: 4G connectivity with WiFi hotspot added to all models.

2016: Fully redesigned for the ninth generation with new technology, engines, and styling.

2017: 2LT model renamed to Premier.

2018: Redline Edition package offered, larger fuel tank on L, LS, and LT models.

2019: New transmission for 1.5L engine, minor exterior styling changes, upgraded stereo.

2020: Hybrid model removed from the lineup, options packages were renamed.

2021: New sport edition package with black exterior trim, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto added.

How Does the Chevy Malibu Compare to the Competition?

The 2020 Chevrolet Malibu is only an average midsize sedan compared to some of the competition on the market. It’s a good choice for shoppers on a budget, but you have to find higher-end models to get the available safety technology.

The Toyota Camry is another midsize sedan, which is about $4,500 more. Ownership costs are lower in the Toyota Camry, while the Chevrolet Malibu offers more passenger room in the back seats. We recommend the Toyota Camry since it has a lot more standard features paired with better long-term reliability ratings.

The Ford Fusion is a sedan which is available for about $2,000 more. Standard technology is better in the Ford Fusion, while the Chevy Malibu has a more comfortable suspension at highway speeds. We recommend the Ford Fusion, although both cars are very similar to each other, making it worth a test drive to see which you prefer.

My car is really great. The color is what is my favorite thing. It is a dark navy blue and it really looks great in all weather. I wish that the seats were leather, as that makes keeping the seats and interior cleaner and are better able to clean than the fabric seats. Overall I enjoy the car play and I didn't have that in my previous car. The gas molar age is also a huge bonus and it only takes about 25-30 to fill up my tank each time.

2020 Chevy Malibu - smooth and sleek.
Keyless entry, remote start, Chevy app that allows you to unlock, lock, and start your car. It drives super smooth and has great gas mileage. The interior is sleek. My only complaint, and this is mainly due to where I live, but the dust and dirt from the gravel roads pack into the rear tire wells and gets out of balance. I have had this issue in other vehicles, but did not become an issue as quick as it has on this vehicle.

Very reliable and cheap to fix.
Yes I have just under 229,000 miles on my 2010 chevy malibu 2.4L exotec and I couldn't be happier with it I do 99% of the maintance myself. At 228.500 miles I just replaced front struts and rear shocks and control arm and bushing all the way around.. Im waiting on my rear wheel bearings to come in mail and im going to replace them seeing how they are 11, years old im actually just going through it and replacing all that needs replaced while I have the money to do so.. And before my new baby gets here and want to help my odds of not haven a surprise.. I also had the fuel pump replaced at 148.000 mls. Water pump at 160,000 i bought the car off my brother with 142,000 of my brother and I was the one who did his maintance on his car and still do. (Save Alot Of my money that way) Other then regular maintance i have had no really bad issues. I did its first ever transmission flush actual flush at 198,000miles.. Buy flushing with transmission flush oil about 25 quarts just to get it nice and flushed out thats way better then any dealer is going to do as the charge $150-$300 just to drain the old and fill back up with new.. I run full synthetic transmission fluid and I started shifting way better and haven't had and issue with it yet.. Other then making my own really nice hidden access panels for the head lights so I could run L.e.d.s best choice ever. Changing a head light in one of these is the dumbest design ever and the hole trunk not haven a key. And just this year you could start buying the white washers for the windshield wiper actuator. Other then the little petty stuff 10000% good car and hella gas mileage i average almost 31 on high way with cruse and 25.5 in the city.. Everything else on this car is stock other then stereo system

Easy drive, advanced technology and smooth on the road (especially in New Orleans). Reliable with advanced technology, not overwhelming. Car does not get very hot, seats are comfortable. There’s a great amount of trunk space, however not much storage in the actual car. Sells itself as a larger car and I could personally go for more room, as I work in the hospitality industry and have a small child that takes up a lot of space.

This is a great car, definitely more bang for your buck!
Great gas mileage, great acceleration, very comfortable on those long drives, and very stylish. Very dependable, great handling, sleek, advanced technology, the seats are firm and have multiple adjustment settings. The rear seat is spacious and the truck is incredible, it is way larger than it appears from the outside.

Summary of a quality product.
I have no problems at this time. Been very satisfied with my vehicle. The premier is fully loaded with all the features of a quality product. Chevrolet has stood in making a vehicle reliable transportation and luxury for the working class. I recommend anyone to test drive a vehicle through a Chevy dealership they are family oriented and work within your budget.

Great car to have. Very reliable.
It is a very good car. Very reliable. Good on gas. Paint job is done perfectly. Great fit for male or female. The seats are soft and comfortable cloth material and is great in any weather. One problem is the eco mode when the car fully stops it shuts off which is annoying. Has a great big screen for the backup camera.

Chevrolet malibu likes and dislikes.
The car is very reliable. My only dislikes are the actually features. It appears that after I upgraded I lost import features such as ability to plug a cord in the back of the car. Only have one usb outlet for charging. The seat in the back of the car cannot pull down for arm rest.

Good car, comfortable interior.
This is my second Malibu with the newer body style, and both have minor issues with technology or little bugs they need to work out. Such as not cutting off when the button is pushed. The screen freezing. The car not starting after it is been in idle position.

It is a great and perfect family car.
I love everything about my car. I love all the features that come with it. I also love all the extra things and choices you have when purchasing the car. I have yet to drive it in the winter time but I heard amazing things about it so far. It drives smooth and is very fast.

The fob that unlocks the door means your keys stay in the purse.
My car is amazing! The pick up when you start is wonderful. The sound system is terrific. The instrument panel is easy to understand. This is a great car!! There is a lot of space in the back seat for leg room. The trunk is large enough for loads of groceries. It has a sleek body. The ride is super smooth. The gas mileage is out of this world. I cannot believe the great deal I got on such an awesome ride.

The Malibu's a decent car.
Very nice vehicle rides great. I average about 34 mpg and drive about 50% highway 50% city. I am 6'2' and 350+lbs and fit comfortably in driver's seat. Trunk is very large and holds a lot but the opening does limit the size of things that can actually fit into it.

The best detail of the car is the steering wheel. And the handle of the car.
I have just purchased the Malibu and I absolutely love the color, comfort, amenities on the steering wheel and the monitor for going in reverse. It is very reliable and a comfortable ride. You are also able to use the steering wheel for volume and to answer phone calls while driving.

I love the way it looks and my radio! And omg how smooth it drives.
I love my car! The only thing that's a bit nerve wracking is the no air conditioning vents in the back. I need them in the back for my baby because it can get hot in the summer but we have a car seat fan for her because of the heart. Other than that I love my car and everything about it.

Excellent except for one thing!
The car is reliable and attractive. I enjoy the features including cruise control, the placement of volume controls on the steering wheel, etc. The only gripe I have is the Bluetooth hookup and wiring to smartphone. The wires hookup to charge the phone does not hook up android auto, so no GPS. The android auto wire hookup does not charge well. Without the wired hookup to android auto, the Bluetooth hookup is hit or miss and very unreliable.

Great gas and performance.
Great gas mileage, safety features and comfortability are the top features that caused me to find my perfect vehicle. The added features of the lt with a backup camera and large touch screen. If owned my vehicle now for 6 months and have found no problems or issues yet. Radio was also a big seller.

Beautiful reliable efficient car.
I really love the vehicle, it gets great gas mileage, I fill up once a week sometimes one every week and a half and I drive a lot for work, it is very spacious inside, and sleek looking, I would recommend to a friend or family. Best adult purchase that I have made.

The black mamba is a beast and reliable.
It is a relatable car & they're definitely made to last. I did have to replace 3 parts in the engine but it was under warranty. The torque converter & 2 other things went out on it. I have said from day 1 when I bought the car, that it wasn’t shifting right.

Apple carplay is awesome.
I just bought my car. I love the apple car play. I love that it has a backup camera and push start. It also had remote start. I am most excited about the apple carplay and bluetooth as I did not have that in my old car. It has heated seats and a very large trunk.
