The 2011 Chevrolet Equinox is a compact SUV that can be found from $8,134 to $11,690. It is a safe SUV, but it ranks near the bottom of its class due to mechanical issues.

A fuel-efficient powertrain, quiet ride, and more passenger room than its competitors.
dislikeFilled The Bad
An underpowered four-cylinder engine is standard, and problems are common with it and the transmission.
checkCircleAlternativeBold The Bottom Line
The 2011 Equinox is an expensive SUV to own due to repair costs as components fail. Better compact SUVs are on the market in the same price range.

2011 Chevrolet Equinox: Quick Overview

  • The 2011 Chevrolet Equinox scores below average in reliability.
  • Two engines are available. The base four-cylinder is more efficient while the V6 has better performance.
  • Equinox ranks 4th in its class for fuel efficiency with 22 miles per gallon in the city and 32 on the highway. The cabin is more spacious than competitors
  • A safe SUV, it gets a four-star crash rating in government crash tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awards it a Top Safety Pick.
  • The 2011 Equinox is near the bottom of the compact SUV class. It will not last as long as competitors, has below-average infotainment, and bad driver visibility. This is an SUV to skip.

Great on gas, and super reliable.
Very reliable. Nice size, roomy, great on gas. Wished the back seat would fold down all the way. Great on gas.
accountCircle Austin L
Great on gas, pretty sound, very roomy.
Bought used, catalytic converter was out, and ac went out soon after. Other than that the car is amazing. Great gas mileage, really good heat, very roomy compared to other vehicles I have had. The moveable and foldable back seat really comes in handy. The hatch space is great for when I go grocery shopping.

Room for long road trips without being cramped.
Equinox rides very smooth. Love that it will tell you tire pressure even as you drive. Bluetooth for hands free calling is a great feature. Plenty of room for those long road trips are a major plus. Racks on top for extra storage is a great feature also. If you like to know your mpg there is a feature that will give you your average mpg also.

The one most important thing people should know about my car is that it is dependable and has been a wonderful vehicle.
This has been one of the best and most reliable vehicles I have owned. I love the way it handles in the winter, the storage space, the roominess for passengers. It gets good gas mileage.

Wonderful features and great mileage
My vehicle is by far my favorite. The features are great. Heating and cooling are a plus and the back is big enough for a good grocery shopping trip. It seats 5 people which I love. The gas mileage is fair and i3 haven't had very many performance issues.

This is my the favorite car I have owned. Will. Definitely buy another chevrolet!
The car gets amazing gas mileage (20). I'drives super smooth and is very quiet. I have had one issues with the engine burning to much oil so it has to be checked often. I also had the air compressor replaced after it quit. And the driver's side heated seat has stopped working. Other than these problems I have loved my car!

It gets good gas mileage and looks good.
I love the features. It is very comfortable. Wish it had a bigger trunk. It is very roomy. It is very sentimental to me because it was my dads.

It is a great small reliable SUV.
Reliable vehicle, great small SUV, comfortable, great backup camera. Had problems with a couple sensors but otherwise great vehicle.

Oil leaking and reading problems.
The car leaks oil because of the rear main seal. This is a problem with all equinox. The oil light does not notify when oil is low. The dipstick to check the oil does not work correctly. The car burns oil. All the problems have to do with oil. The end.
accountCircle Tara F
Do not buy an equinox. Nonstop issues.
Constant issues, recalls, sensors always go bad. Always something wrong. Have replaced multiple belts and sensors. Had to have pistons replaced. Oil consumption issues. Most work not covered by dealership but even covered recall issues are a hassle and inconvenient. Wish I never bought it.

Do not buy one. GMC does not stand behind their products
It is a 2011, it has already needed a catalytic converter, fuel rail, fuel pump, new engine, etc. The engine is making noise again.

Not a great vehicle lots of issues
It was great in the beginning, as soon as the warranty ran out I’ve been fixing everything. It’s a 2011 and there is a big problem with the fuel leaking into the oil, very common, yet not recalled. Also the master cylinder went which is very uncommon in most vehicles. Both things very expensive to replace. So mad.

Bad car
My 2011 Chevy equinox was in the shop more than I had it at home. They had to put a new motor in it at 19000 miles and it did not fix it. Chevrolet and the dealer would not consider it a lemon even though it was. I will never own another 2.4l Chevy equinox.
accountCircle Ruskey D
Be very careful. Do a lot of research before buying an equinox.
The Chevy equinox is a poorly made vehicle from it is transmission with the engine not pairing up well and it always seems to be searching for the right hear, the vehicle only has 111000 miles on it and the oil pump sensor failed on it. The 2011 Chevy equinox was supposed to have been made better, it just appears better looking, I was hoping that the ltz model, with the 3.0 v6 would e better, I test drove one with a 4 cylinder that was even worse with less horsepower and poor gas mileage.
accountCircle Kristin A
Keep it fully maintained. Keep good tires on the car at all times.
I am having oil intake problems. The air conditioner isn't working. The engine makes a very rough noise when you first start it.
accountCircle Jean O
Avoid Chevrolet Equinox, either terrible or miraculous.
Started using excessive oil at 40, 000 miles. Motor rebuilt by Chevrolet. Air conditioner compressor has died, axle on front going out. Performance is terrible gas mileage is horrible. I would avoid this car if at all possible. Front-end needs to be realigned.

What Problems Does the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox Have?

The 2011 Chevrolet Equinox problems include excessive oil use and steering failure. The most common problem with Equinox is excessive oil consumption in the engine. It can lead to low oil pressure which permanently damages the engine. Owners report they have to replace entire engine blocks with this problem. It is a good idea to always check oil levels on the Equinox.

There are three recalls affecting the 2011 Equinox. They include seat belt buckle anchors, seat height adjuster bolts, and the key may be removed from the vehicle when it is not in park, leading to a rollaway situation.

What are the Prices, Models & Specs?

The 2011 Chevrolet Equinox can be found used from $8,134 to $11,690 depending on the model and mileage. When it was new it had a retail price of $22,995 to $30,320. It has a sharp initial depreciation rate, losing 50% of its value in just five years

A 2011 Equinox will last 150,000 miles when properly cared for. Repair Pal estimates it will cost $630 per year in maintenance to keep the SUV running. Making it more expensive to own than other compact SUVs.

accountCircle Kayla H

It is very reliable. I have had zero problems with my Chevy equinox. It drives smoothly. It has a better turn radius than older model equinox.

accountCircle Jennifer A

Yes, it is reliable. I have not had any major problems, no engine or transmission issues. It is an older model and needs to warmed up but I've made several trips to Vegas from California with no problems.

accountCircle Stephen S

I believe so. It problem was my transmission around 60,000 miles, but was replaced under extended warranty.

accountCircle Mauricio D

Haven't had any major issues outside of regular maintenance schedule. Any issues were related to manufacturers required maintenance schedule.

accountCircle Priscilla A

Yes my 2011 equinox is reliable I usually do a lot of travelling with my family and I have never had an issue with my truck.

accountCircle Miley M

As mentioned before, the car shuts down in cold temperatures, and the oil needs to be changed more than normal. The mechanic said this is an issue most of Chevy have. The oil burns too fast and it will be 2 months in between every change. If you do not find yourself purchasing more oil and adding it to the tank. It is not a reliable auto.

accountCircle Stacy D

I have had no problems with mine. Regular maintenance helps. There was a recall on the electrical system and the dealer replaced that. I am very satisfied with my equinox and when I purchase a new car, I am getting the newer version.

accountCircle Jamie D

Yes! My Equinox is my daily driver and I've put several thousand miles on it and I have yet to have a single issue!

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

  • Base technology includes a CD player with six-speakers and OnStar communication technology
  • Technology upgrades include a touch-screen navigation system, an upgraded Pioneer stereo system, and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system with eight-inch screens.
  • For safety there is emergency brake assist, traction and stability control, and a vehicle Collision notification system. There is also an optional backup camera available.

What Engine Options are Available?

The 2011 Chevy Equinox is not a high-performance compact SUV. It will get from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 9.3 seconds. The Equinox is not engaging to drive since the steering feels light and disconnected from the road.

  • The base engine is a 2.4L four-cylinder with 182 horsepower
  • An upgraded 3L V6 is available producing 264 horsepower.

What Colors Options are Available?

How Big is the Equinox?

The Chevrolet Equinox is a compact SUV, so it is relatively small. It has a roomier cabin than its competitors, which makes it more comfortable to drive. With the rear seats up, it has 31.4 cu. ft. of cargo space. It increases to 63.7 cu. ft. with the rear seats folded flat. This is average for its class, and it can hold four to five full-size suitcases for a road trip.

Centered wide dash shot

How Does the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox Compare to Other SUVs?

In the compact SUV market, the 2011 Equinox ranks 19th, near the bottom of the list. The Toyota RAV4 has better reliability than the Chevrolet, but is less comfortable to drive. The Chevy has more room for passengers and cargo as well. Overall, though, the Toyota is a better vehicle lasting longer and cheaper to own.

Another competitor is the Ford Escape. The Equinox is safer than the Ford, scoring higher in crash tests. It also is more fuel-efficient than the Ford on average. Where it loses out is in reliability. The Ford is the better overall package.

Final Verdict: Is the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox a Good SUV?

No, the Chevy Equinox is not a good SUV. They have good safety ratings, and a spacious cabin, but aside from that, they miss the mark. The Equinox is one of the least reliable vehicles in its class with major mechanical problems. It also lacks equipment found on rivals. If you are looking for a small SUV, there are better choices on the market.

Summarize great steering control and fingertip controls on the steering wheel.
It's a great car on highway and city. Highway we get about 28 mpg and around town we get about 18 mph. Very comfortable seating and the seat warmers are great. Cargo space is quite large but when the back seats go down its huge. The car handles great in all kinds of weather.

The two engines provide good power, handling is mix of comfort and poise.
The 2011 Chevy equinox is a good compact SUV. It has some of the highest composite crash test results in the class and excellent fuel economy. The two available engines provide good amounts of power, and the Chevy’s handling is a nice mix of comfort and poise. A long wheelbase gives the equinox a ton of rear-seat passenger room. Cargo space is decent for the class.

Chevy equinox- super reliable.
Extremely reliable in winter, moderate/high performance. Interior is spacious. Tons of room for passengers, trunk space is large for transporting items, the back seats fold for extra space. Safety is top concern, and this vehicle has high safety features that make you feel safe when driving. Even though it is an older model some things in the engine have been replaced. As long as you keep on top of the fixes it needs it will run like brand new.

All- around good, spacious, comfortable, and dependable vehicle!
It is extremely smooth riding and comfortable to drive. It is amazingly spacious! It can hold its value well if it is well taken care of. It gets good gas mileage and all around runs really well. The problems I have with it are that it can be dented quite easy. So if someone opens their door into your vehicle in a parking lot, it is going to leave a decent sized dent. Hail damage can happen pretty badly to. So I guess it is thin metal. Other than that, I like my everyday driving vehicle a whole bunch!

2011 Chevy equinox burns oil.
The car burns oil more than others, especially when it is super hot outside causing the car to rev when in neutral or while idling. The transmission shifts a little funny and can seem weird if not used to that issue. Overall, the car is very reliable, but may begin to develop issues at 150,000 miles.

It is a great car very reliable. The only issues I have run into are with the stabilitrak system lights coming on saying it needs service and the check engine light coming on. The seats in my vehicle are netted so they tend to leave lines on you if you are sitting in it for any length of time.

The vehicle is a very smooth ride with lots of space for the family and to bring home groceries. When my husband was in a head on collision the car protected him deploying the airbags, alerting on star, and saving his life. I would definitely recommend this car to potential buyers!

The seats are comfortable and the body is cute.
This particular vehicle uses way too much oil, which seems to be the norm for this size engine in this vehicle. The throttle body seems to get gummed up too often. The wheel bearing also seem to need replaced way more often than normal. Gas mileage isn't what you would expect from a 4 cylinder.

2011 equinox - very comfy and roomy!
No major problems. My driver window rolls up really slow, but I can get that fixed. I have head of oil problems but haven't had any myself and keep a close eye on it. It is extremely comfortable and the seats hug your body allowing for a comfortable drive especially on road trips. Engine is pretty loud and someone mentions it every single time I give them a ride. I don't really like the setup of the dash but the newer equinox's and beautiful!

Check into purchasing a Chevy equinox for the comfort and space alone.
It has very poor visibility but it is comfortable, gets great mileage and has plenty of room for everything you need. The storage room is great and the seats recline to a nice level of comfort. The car has been very reliable and has never failed me on a trip. I just replaced the battery and alternator and have bought two sets of tires. Has 80,000 miles.

Best car especially for long trips.
My Chevy has been very reliable I have had gotten it from a family member and it has give me minimal problems. Any problems I did have were from an outside source and were an easy fix. The vehicle itself has nothing wrong with it and the synthetic oil it uses means that I can wait a bit longer before needing to get a change. Not mention the fuel last a long time. All in all this is definitely a vehicle I would recommend to those who are looking.

What's wrong with 2011 Chevy equinox.
The car itself is spacious and comfortable. There are certain issues this particular vehicle is prone to and it seems the 2011 model has them all. The ac does not hold a charge. The serpentine belt needs replaced at 90,000. Even after getting an oil change engine has a tick like its low. And the ride is not smooth you feel every bump on the road from it having a poor suspension. Backup camera is not accurate it shows objects further than they are which had me hit my own garbage pails.

Excellent small family vehicle for day to day or those outdoor adventures.
I experienced first model year warranty issues and recalls but these have all been taken care of not at my expense. It is comfortable for short drivers with long torso and short legs. The back seat is comfortable for multiple adults in long distances. Newer model years have addressed any of the nuances I didn't like such as rear seat not folding flat and no latch to fold from the back. I will be purchasing another equinox when mine finally gives up the ghost.

Can't see out the rear of vehicle. Too heavy takes too long to stop not enough power engine needs to be bigger, can't program the stereo. Headlight go out constantly. Always having to change them. Changing the headlights is a pain. To access them you have to go through the wheel well.

Chevy equinox ultimate comfortable and luxury car.
The Chevy equinox is very fuel efficient and I love that about it. It's great to travel in and comfortable. I see it as a semi luxurious car because of the not real leather look it has beautiful red trim with the black seats. The back seat reclines and my kiddos love that. I have a few cargo options behind the backseat on the roof or to pull a small uhaul with the hitch. The performance of this car is unbelievably incredible.

My Equinox helps me navigate through my daily life.
There was a major engine issue that consumed excessive oil. The test / proof phase was a pain but Chevy fixed it free of charge. It is comfortable and drives well. There is a slight blind spot at the rear corners. I like how the rear seat adjusts forward and back to give more leg room or more cargo space. Overall I would recommend the Equinox to others and would look at it for my next car.

Reliable with a few minor issues!
The car has been reliable with no major problems. I do not get near the mileage stated on the sale sticker, was 26 to 29 I only get 21 miles per gallon. Some things are cheaply made, the back wiper brakes easily and the rubber on the blade doesn't last long, the fake silver wrap on inside door handles are peeling off.

The air vents are only in the back so it takes a while to cool down the back seat which stinks, I've had a few problems with the transmission and oil consumption but I fixed those at the dealership. My vehicle now runs great is very roomy and has a lot of great safety features which I love. My sons bulky car seat fits in the back seat perfectly with room to spare the leg room in there is amazing and trunk space is the best

2011 equinox has its ups and downs but overall a decent vehicle.
Problems with the air. Shift lever gets stuck. Replaced pistons. We've had to have Chevrolet replace over $6,000 worth of repairs all stemming from the manufacturer. The car does offer a decent amount of room and the back hatch is nice. It also does a fair job of handling night snow which is a huge help living in Michigan.

I like the size of it and the fact that it's not too big or too small. I like the small SUV size and it's comfortable for me to drive. I like the XM radio which I listen to all the time. My white night was an extraordinary car named Chevrolet Equinox.
My husband purchased a 2011 Chevrolet Equinox lt a few years ago and what struck me was that it was a Chevrolet. I didn't see that coming at all but when I finally drove it I understood why. It was the smoothest ride I have ever had in a vehicle. The comfort I felt as I sat in the cushioned seat that enveloped me with ease. He bought the car for his Uber driving job that he signed up for as something to do after he retired. His riders constantly questioned the make, model and style of the car. (the seats warmed me up on those cold mornings in Kansas city). The acoustics were also in play because my husband would play jazz CD's while driving. This made the ride even smoother, and relaxing. He still owns this car and even after going over 100, 000 miles it still performs like a new car. I hope to acquire this car and get him another or just buy my own. The unfortunate down side to the car is that it burns a lot of oil, other than that it is the best car that I have driven.

The engine parts get gunked up a lot causing the engine to perform poorly. Need to change oil every 3 months and perform other regular maintenance frequently. The voice is a good fit for me as I am 6'5'. The mpg is good for the vehicle which is one of the main reasons I purchased the vehicle. The best features about the vehicle are the Bluetooth connection and satellite radio capabilities.

A comfortable car but a bunch of issues.
This model has had issues with the engine and transmission. When the engine died Chevy did replace the engine with a brand new one but it only qualified for a rebuilt transmission. There was also a problem with the motor for the wiper blades that was fixed by Chevy. Please know that rust is developing on the bottom of the doors and tailgate.

I like the gas mileage and the comfort. I do not like that we had to replace the transmission last year and I feel it is somewhat unreliable. I would like a somewhat bigger vehicle, too.

There is no real interesting thing about this car.
I owned a 2010 Chevy equinox and it was an excellent car did not break down nothing I went to a 2010-2011 equinox and every other month I have had some major mechanical problem with it the seats are very uncomfortable it has blind spots like you cannot believe and it is just a car I would never purchase again because of the issues.

It has been very reliable, especially in the winter with snow and ice.
It has been a good car, especially getting around in the snow. I really just want a change and it is more car than I need with not having any kids still at home.

The backup camera is very useful.
I love this car because it has a great backup camera. It has a fantastic touch screen radio with Bluetooth connectability. This car drives very smooth and great. It has a very comfy and roomy interior.

Had to replace the pistons in the engine but was covered under warranty
Good gas mileage, back up camera is hit or miss. Back seat provides good leg room. Wish it was V6 especially in mountain

Equinox is a reliable truck. I have not done any major repairs to the vehicle.
The Equinox is a reliable, family vehicle. It is big enough to haul 5 passengers but small enough to drive alone. Equinox is great on gas mileage and because it is a Chevrolet, it is definitely dependable.

Lemon. Many issues with this vehicle.
All but one notices received that describe things that might go wrong have gone wrong with this vehicle. Biggest issue has been with the engine, several repairs have been needed. I do not feel this vehicle is reliable. It makes odd noises at times when starting it and sometimes does not start on the first attempt.

Reliable vehicle that comes with a few features and issues.
It had an oil burning issue that Chevrolet honored fixing, but it was not because they contacted me. It only occurred because I looked it up online because I was told my car model was prone to that issue. It gets horrible gas mileage at 120k miles. It is comfortable and I am glad the mirror is high enough I can see under it. A huge design flaw is that you cannot see cars coming on your right because the thickness of the material that leads from the dash to the rook is wide enough you can miss an entire car coming up to a sign or driving in front of you. It can be dangerous. I like the lt features like the back up camera and electric seat, mirrors. The heater mirror option is a huge plus for me. The radio Sirius - was nice to have while I had it. I miss it. The OnStar capability creates extra security for me. I have daughters and want them to be safe.
