2012 Chevrolet Camaro Review: Affordable And Dependable Sports Car

Alex Showalter
Mar 24, 2022

The 2012 Camaro lasts up to 200,000 miles with only minor engine and A/C issues. At $13,747 – 21,145, it’s a bargain offering a lot of performance for the money.

VehicleHistory Image
likeFilled The Good
Power is excellent with the V8 engines, the retro styling stands out compared to other sports cars and the suspension is comfortable.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Passenger space is cramped in the backseats, visibility is poor due to the large pillars and the steering feel is lighter than rivals.

Is the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro a Good Used Car?

  • Yes, 2012 is a good year. Owners have praised the performance, reliability, and comfortable seats.
  • Reliability ratings are good. Shoppers should avoid the 2010 model with a lot of mechanical issues, and models from 2013 and newer have more interior complaints.
  • Performance is excellent from all three engines including a V6 and two powerful V8s.
  • The 2012 Camaro is a safe car getting a perfect 5-star rating in government crash tests.
  • Fuel economy is great for a sports car at up to 22 MPG combined.

The paint job is amazing! It is red with black pinstripes!
I have no complaints. I love my vehicle. It drives really well. I love the color.

Convertible makes it a wonderful ride.
No problems. Been an excellent car. We love it being a convertible. Very sporty. Drives great and handles great. It is my wife's favorite car. Inexpensive to operate on a daily schedule. 2012 have not had any problems at all. Comfortable ride and sporty at that.

Awesome, durable, nice car.
I really love my car. It is comfortable, fast, sounds good, and it is overall a great car. One complaint I have about it is the blind spots, but you get use to them and as long as you are careful you'll be fine! Car is very reliable. Only started having problems with it when it was around 6 or 7 years old, which make sense.

A super sharp dream car with a reasonable price tag
I love my camaro. It is super sporty and slick. We turn heads wherever we are. The white paint with the royal blue racing stripes (painted, not decals) is super sharp. The one thing that bothers me is that the clear coat on the hubcaps are flaking off. I need to contact Chevrolet since whatever is going on with the faulty hubcaps was most likely a manufacturing issue.

Totally I am love with my Camaro.
My car is a stick and I absolutely love it. The seats are very comfortable for smaller people. If you are roughly six foot the back seats would not be ideal. The clutch has a lot of give when shifting but it does not take long to learn. The cup holders are annoying because the drinks are a little in the way for shifting. The trunk is very nice and easy to get the spare tire out. It has decent speakers. It is a very slick model love the body of the vehicle. Engine looks great and seems reliable.

2012 camaro 2ss - beautiful, black beauty.
I have not experienced any problems with my vehicle as of yet. There are a few features I would change if I had the option - such as the block on using Bluetooth while the car is on motion and the inflatable spare tire kit. Otherwise the car is a smooth ride, very fast and attractive. Worth every penny I spent on it.
accountCircle Sarah H
It is a great car as long as you know how to drive it.
As far as problems I have just about the same as any car after 6 years. Nothing majorly I could think of other than the ac going out. The front seats are extremely comfortable and a lot of space. Not so much in the back, very snug if there’s more than 3 people in the car.

Chevrolet quality and control.
I have always lived and wanted a camaro and it is nothing short of spectacular! Amazing ride, sporty if that is what you like, nice quality interior and I always feel secure because it is a heavy car. I wouldn’t own anything other than a Chevrolet! It has power, beautiful console display and great gas mileage to be a sports car.

Sharp looking car that is fast has too many blind spots.
Way too many blind spots. It is fine if top is down on the convertible but if top is up it's hard to see in some spots. Car is fast and gets good gas mileage for a sports car. Trunk is incredibly small. Only really comfortable with 2 people. Good turn radius.

Its a sports car so its not practice for a short mom getting 3 kids in and out of the tiny short hot black sportster.

King cars with the hint of power I would say stay focused and know what.
Honestly the power in the engine could have been better but I will say this baby will get somewhere. I would prefer something more manly like a v8 engine with the kick. That is just me though not sure what y'all prefer. I would saying steering is too. Rated and handles on point.

Fast and furious vs. Silence of the lambs.
Leaks oil, electrical issues causes power windows to stick, transmission wears out, decrease in power - pick up lags, turn indicator is difficult to see, no back up camera, blind spots, seats are manual and not automatic, steering fluid leaks, room in the back seat is limited - head clearance is low, Bluetooth connection takes a while to connect, gas cap does not have a lock.

The vehicle is too heavy.
Vehicle is nice but it's too heavy making it easily degrade over time. Having to clean it is very annoying due to how tight inside the cabin is. Sleeping on the back seats is impossible and sleeping in the front seats is uncomfortable. The window line degrades over time when left in the sun for too long.
accountCircle Janice B
It has a sleek design and rides smooth.
I like it because it's fast and has power. I don't like the fact that it sits too close to the ground and the smallest thing on the ground hits the undercarriage.

The pros and cons of an RS camaro
I enjoy having a sports car. I love how you can also drive it manual because it runs great and fast. It does waste a little more gas than a usual small Honda but, it is well worth it.
accountCircle Lydia M
It is a sporty, fun ride that looks good with me driving it.
I like the car but it uses a lot of gas and does not get the best gas mileage. It also has issues with the computer system which requires me having to take it to a shop. With the computer systems it is harder to fix the car yourself. The air conditioner does not work very well either.

What Do Critics Say About the Camaro?

  • Consumer Reports finds the Camaro to be a great modern muscle car, with high owner satisfaction ratings.
  • Edmunds rates the Camaro 4.5/5 and likes the powerful acceleration and good looks, but finds the cabin very cramped.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Camaro a 4.7/5, finding it to be a great dollar-to-horsepower car, but the interior has a lot of cheap materials.

What Common Problems Does the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro Have?

Problems with the 2012 Camaro are relatively minor including engine shuddering, air conditioning issues, and sensor failures.

Engine shudder and loss of power is the most common complaint from owners showing up at around 55,000 miles. There is an update for the torque converter which usually solves the problem. Out of warranty, the replacement costs about $1,200.

A loss of hot and cold air is mentioned at around 110,000 miles. The temperature blend door is the source of the problem, costing $1,100 to replace.

Mass air flow-sensor failures are also brought up by owners in the first 10,000 miles. Replacing the sensor solves the problem, costing around $200.

There are 5 recalls with the most serious being for the ignition switch which can cause the car to turn off while driving. Most of the other recalls are for airbags which are not a concern once they’ve been replaced.

How Long Will the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro Last?

A properly maintained 2012 Camaro can last up to 200,000 miles, which is similar to top rated sports cars including the Mustang. Repair Pal estimates regular annual maintenance costs to be affordable at $563 per year.

As a Camaro reaches 100,000 miles owners should prepare to replace shocks for $800, a window regulator motor costing $300, and an ABS control module which costs $600.

accountCircle Emilio B

I have never had any problems with the vehicle. No engine issues and no cosmetic issues. All I had to do with the car was basic maintenance.

accountCircle Jade L

Yes it is. Unless you live with snow then you have issues. But other than that it's perfect. I haven't had any problems minus the snow.

accountCircle Ariana M

The 2012 Chevrolet camaro 1ss is definitely reliable! I would say it struggles in any extreme weather conditions, but otherwise it is perfect.

accountCircle Megan S

It is very reliable not many problems. There was a recall on the key. It had to be changed to a normal key rather than the stick that would pop out from the key holder

accountCircle Mtn N

It doesn't have any problems so far, it was a second hand purchased vehicle but it definitely works like new!

accountCircle Melinda O

My Camaro has a lot of issues. I bought it used and did not do enough due diligence. Overall it is pretty reliable.

accountCircle Kaitlyn L

Very reliable and only problem I has is I had to replace the rack and pinion. It started to leak power steering fluid and I didn't have the money to fix it so I just kept adding fluid to it until I could pay to have it fixed

accountCircle Carla S

It is very reliable. The only problem I had was with a leak in my soft top. The dealership repaired it for me. It took a month, so they also made a car payment for me! I love Chevrolet!

How Much Is the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro Worth?

Blue book values range from $13,747 – 21,145 making the Camaro around $4,000 cheaper than a Challenger or 370z. When new, the price range was $23,280 to $41,030. Depreciation is similar to rivals losing 10% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Camaro?

There are six versions of the Camaro available. Technology is okay with a rearview camera added for 2012, and the next redesign with all new navigation technology is in 2015.

What Engines Come In the Camaro?

  • The SS models come with a more powerful 6.2L V8 with 426 horsepower, which takes 5 seconds to go from 0-60.
  • The ZL1 comes with a very powerful supercharged 6.2L V8 which makes 580 horsepower and only takes 4.2 seconds to do the sprint from 0-60.

What Colors Does the Camaro Come In?

How Big Is the Camaro?

The Camaro is similar in size to other 2-door sports cars including the Mustang and Challenger. Passenger room is good in the front seats, but the back seats are very cramped for adults.

Cargo space is smaller than rivals with only 11.3 cubic feet of room in the trunk.

VehicleHistory Image

How Does the Camaro Compare to the Competition?

The Ford Mustang is the closest competitor in the same price range. Entry-level Mustangs offer more exciting performance, but technology is better in the Camaro. Overall, we prefer the Mustang since it’s slightly more reliable long-term.

The Nissan 370Z is another rival costing about $5,000 more. Handling is significantly better in the Nissan, but the Camaro is more powerful. Ultimately, the choice comes down to personal preference, but the 370z holds its value better.

Camaro overview. For 2020, Chevy equips the relatively basic camaro lt.
Acceleration from v6 and v8 engines relatively smooth ride, especially with the adaptive suspension solid value thanks to a long list of standard equipment. Camaro comes in eight trim levels, starting with a four-cylinder 1ls and progressing to the 1lt, 2lt and 3lt that can be optioned with a v6. The lt1 comes with a v8, while the 1ss and the 2ss receive further performance upgrades. Finally, the mighty zl1 offers a supercharged v8 and track pedigree. Most come as either a coupe or convertible.

I have a 2012 2SS camaro. It is my dream car. Yes there is not very much room in the back seat. It is not a family sedan. If you want more room, get a 4 door la bamba car, not a sports car. Yes there are blind spots but you get over that fast...look what you're driving !!!!! As for gas mileage, I wouldn't care if it got 4 miles per gallon.

A sleek black outside and interior 2012 camaro.
I love my car simply because it drives so smooth. The heat and ac turns on really fast in the summer/ wintertime. I got it with about 25,000 miles on it and it was practically new. The only thing I have done was the common oil change and I have had to replace the breaks but I guess that is kind of on me.

Problems: ac, battery, tires. Reliability: gas, distance, power, muscle. Comfort: sunroof, aux, leather, easy to clean. I would say the car is a great drive but once something goes wrong, it goes downhill. Make sure to always warm the car up before driving.

I love how it looks and how the headlights look and the shape of the car.
It is a bumpy ride considering it is a sports car. Also since it is American made it will not last more than 180,000 miles if you are lucky. But it is definitely worth the ride and I do not regret my decision on buying it and maintaining it would cost around 2 to 3000 a year.

All stock. Shifter panels/Bluetooth/HUD. Needs better gas mileage.
I love my car! I have had only a couple problems since my family got it in 2011. The aux/Bluetooth will randomly stop playing music. All you have to do is disconnect and reconnect it and it will work after that. Other than that I have a random clicking noise that I have had for years on the car. It is been barely noticeable and the shop said it is nothing to worry about but the sound has gotten a lot louder almost 10 years later.

Short sweet camaro review.
There’s really nothing much to say about my car. It is small pretty good on gas for a sports car. It is mostly comfortable minus the smallness. Definitely not a car for someone who needs space seeing how the trunk is super small as well. Very easy to dent vehicle as well.
accountCircle Ethan K on March 13, 2021
It's very sleek and fast.
Camaros accelerate really fast. Once the light turns green I can get ahead of everybody else very fast and easily. This also helps when merging onto a highway. I can accelerate past someone if they're not letting me in. The car is also pretty comfortable and has good speakers. However, the interior gets very hot very easily. I also often have passengers complain about how low the ceiling in the back seat is. It's not super comfortable to drive on long road trips but it isn't bad. The gas mileage is decent. The car is very big which makes it easy to nick things on turns. However, the bumper is super strong. I've had two people rear end me and I still don't have a dent back there.
accountCircle Laura S on March 8, 2021
What an amazing beautiful car.
I did have to replace the motor in it about a year after I got it. I love how the car drives. It runs so smooth. I have had minor maintenance issues other than the motor like starter and alternator. It is more of a 2 person car than a 4 which was perfect for me.

2012 Camaro LS Coupe: Reliable and Stylish
My camaro is very comfortable and has good back support and mobility, however if you are on the taller side it might be a squeeze. The car performs very well, is fast, and has a nice aesthetic, but does get pretty low gas mileage. I have not had any mechanical issues since I bought the car used about 6 months ago, and the previous owner did not disclose any upon buying. The car has Bluetooth and a simple interior which I also like, and a lot of trunk space.

I call my car my midlife crisis sports car. It looks great and drives great.
I love my camaro. It is a silver camaro with a spoiler on the back. It is a super sport and super sport is embroidered on the seats. The interior is black leather. The seats do not get to hot because my windows come tinted from the factory. The engine is a v8. I love the power it has and the way it hugs curves as you drive. I also love the radio. I have a CD player and it also has a USB port in the console and in front of the gear shift that you can plug in other things. I also have cruise control. You can control cruise control and your phone and radio from the steering wheel. The only negative thing I have to say about this car is that there is a blind spot in my vision when I am on the interstate. You really have to use the mirrors when you are trying to pass someone. I also have an issue judging the distance when I am going around a curb. The front of the car is really long. Overall this is my favorite car I have ever had. The bucket seats are so comfortable and they are heated. They are also electric. So I am able to move my seat up and down or back and forth.

Dream car for showy teens.
The car mostly runs good and keeps you feeling the man on the highway because it can get up and run. Although there is not much room in the car so definitely not for someone who likes to take their friends all around the globe. And a few minor problems with the a/c or the seats might occur over the years but man made thing will break so you cannot really blame the car. Overall it is a good vehicle for a young, showy car.

Camaro was great before having a child.
I have had a problem with the alignment, it steers to the right. I also spend a lot of gas. I usually have to pump two to three times a week. It is comfortable, although would rather have a more modern stereo. It is not a very child friendly car while they're smaller as it is a two door. And as they grow up the leg room in the back is not enough when you have a booster seat in. My boyfriend enjoys how fast it can run, we like driving it out to Las Vegas to take advantage of the long straight roads.

2012. Stylish, fast, and tight. Low priced, handles well, easy on gas.
This is an awesome car. Love the styling. Interior is user friendly. The rs 2lt has a lot of bells and whistles. Car is fun to drive. This one has the v6 rated at 323 hp. Has great acceleration without hitting passing gear. For a v6 I think that is incredible. Handles the corners even better than expected. I love the gas mileage (26 mpg) but often wonder what v8 performance would do. Only drawback for me is the ride is too stiff. This model has the sport cars suspension.

Larger sized sports car with great response, steering and stopping capabilities. Back seats fold down for more cargo area if needed. Power seats and windows. No spare tire. Battery is in trunk where spare tire usually is kept.
The car is fast and sporty. Slightly rough ride due to low profile tires. Lots of blind spots and I don't feel as safe driving it as any of my other cars. Older technology no usb and cannot play music from my phone but can use hands free talking. No spare tire is a stress when I travel far distances but it is fun to drive. It is a 6 cylinder so fats fair gas mileage.

This is a great car, besides the recall issues with the key entry and the airbags exploding at inopportune times. The car has dimmable theatre lighting, along with 320 hp under the hood. Get out of your own way, and break away from the pack with this powerful, sleek machine.

2ls camaro fun and customizable.
Manual transmission is really fun to drive. 323 horsepower is plenty powerful on its own but the car is very moddable so it has a lot of options available for my power and customization. The car is very reliable and get good fuel economy as well. I am very satisfied with my vehicle.

Camaro life second to none.
My camera is amazing. I love my car better than my husband sometimes lol. It has caused me no problems. I love the way it handles. It is comfortable to ride in. As long as proper maintenance is performed your car should last. I use it for work and long distance trips.

Chevy Camaro convertible. Fun to drive and dependable.
None. The car is going on 7 years old with 52k miles. The only thing I have done was oil changes and tires. I used to like Fords because I had one that last 10 years but I think l now I might ne a Chevy fan. The features are good except for the seat. It already has a rip in it. They should make the fabric thicker.

It is a good car it just has to many blind spots.
I am not really a coupe person because it is hard to see in rearview. So when you want to change lanes you have a lot of blind spots, so be careful speeding trying to change lanes. Other than that I do not really have a problem with it besides it sitting low the ground.

Bringing back old school muscle cars!
No issues! Beautiful muscle car! Just like the old school Camaro. 6 speed Hurst short throw shifter from factory is bad to the bone! Center console gauges are cool and the heads up display is a true attribute. Thanks Chevy! You really made a comfortable and stylish sports car loaded with much horsepower to not only enjoy, but to over achieve others sports cars both on the road and the track.

Straight piping it, makes it sound totally awesome.
Love my Camaro. 0-60 in 5 7 seconds. Runs like a dream. Only problem I have is the antenna is loose, so when it rains really bad, it leaks through the hole for the antenna and water gets inside it. Other than that, I am in love with it.
