Alex Showalter
Mar 29, 2022

The 2012 3 Series can last over 200,000 miles even with some cooling and electrical issues. At $12,729 – 20,472, it’s an excellent entry-level German luxury sports car.

Performance is outstanding, cabin materials are high quality and the steering response is very tight.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Ownership costs are high, the backseats are cramped and the infotainment system is tricky to use.

Is the 2012 BMW 3 Series a Good Used Car?

  • Yes, 2012 is a good year. Owners really like the luxury, dependability, and overall styling.

Best car on the road. Wouldn't want any other car.
I love my car it is a white BMW. I have always loved that car and always wanted a BMW. It is very expensive for me but tell worth it. It is reliability is excellent, it already has 98000 miles on it and it has never given me a problem and I absolutely love the leather interior. If I ever buy another car it would have to be a BMW again.

It has a lot of power and it is fun to drive. I have a manual transmission which enhances the driving experience.
It's a BMW. What is there not to like. It handles well and is gum to drive.

The car that works for you, as long as you maintain.
It is comfortable, reliable, classy, yet inexpensive. Maintenance is more on the expensive side, but if you keep it up, when it pays for itself in the long-run. I love the automatic seats, and when there is an alert, it shows what part of the car is the problem on the screen on the dash. I also like how your mph is projected on the windshield.

2012 BMW 328i 4 door sedan.
The BMW 328i performance level in superior to other 4 cylinder vehicles. It comes with a turbo. It also is well equipped with navigation and Bluetooth technology. The vehicle comes with premium leather seats that are heated. The car comfortably seats 5 adults. It has smart release trunk technology. The car is equipped with cruise control and moonroof.

Great car, bad front door handles.
Door rest melts and puts black stuff on your hand when temp is hot outside. This causes your hand to be smeared with a gooey tar like substance. I have looked at other reviews where others have the same problem with the BMW car. Told by person at car dealer that it is due to chemicals interacting from an individual’s hand. Needs to be a recall.

Beautiful red BMW three series.
My three series BMW handles incredibly well, great pick up as well as comfort. I did however have to get the entire gas tank replaced due to a gas smell it was covered under warranty. Other than the gas tank issue the car has been reliable I would highly recommend this vehicle to anyone in your price range.

Smooth for long rides on the Hwy.
Gives good mileage on Hwy, however, not so much on the street. Comfy for long rides, very reliable & safe. The downside would be it is a bit noisy. You do not really get quiet time cause of the engine and the car being so low. But it is very reliable, and smooth for long drives.

My car is really reliable!
The performance of my car is remarkable. It has shown to be reliable time and time again, it even has a really cool feature with the wheels where I can drive up to 24 hours on a flat tire without causing harm to my vehicle. It's very good on gas and the seats are comfortable as heck!

BMW 328i luxury model nightmare.
The vehicle used to be reliable until the extended warranty ran out and all of a sudden it started falling apart which led to expensive maintenance issues that were covered and required out of pocket costs. It has been difficult to keep up with repairs and has become virtually a money pit of an 'investment.'.

Overheating, parts are hard to find for this vehicle and sometimes the window motors go out and the rust under the fender and the parts are very expensive the brakes and brake pads and the brake rotors are expensive. Luxury and Comfort, yet affordable
Compact and easy to drive Comfortable and reliable. Even when maintenance is required. Has turbo in engine so it is faster like a sports car but gets gas mileage like a smaller car. The seat warmers are great in winter and the trunk size is extra large as well

The interior was nice and comfortable.
This cat was extremely comfortable. It operated at a nice performance level and ran very smoothly. It was reliable however always a pain to get fixed because the parts were expensive. However with good upkeep I was able to not have to take it in as much

The problems in the 2012 3 Series include cooling system issues, electrical failures, seat problems.

Cooling system failures including worn-out water pumps, are a problem at around 60,000 miles in some vehicles. Replacing the water pump costs about $1,500 depending on local labor rates.

Electrical system problems are mentioned at around 40,000 miles from some owners. The problem involves the vehicle stalling while driving, and is usually caused by computer issues. Repairing the problem costs around $650.

Seat issues are another complaint from owners at around 15,000 miles. There are problems with the restraint system which were addressed in a recall and are repaired for free.

There are 7 recalls, and the most serious include a loss of brake assist, and the PCV heater which can increase the risk of a fire.

How Long Will the 2012 BMW 3 Series Last?

A properly maintained 3 Series can last over 200,000 miles, which is around 50,000 miles longer than other luxury rivals including the Volvo S60. Regular annual maintenance costs are expensive, according to Repair Pal, at $821 per year.

As a 3 Series ages, owners should prepare to replace the A/C evaporator for $2,000, valve cover gasket costing $700, and the camshaft position sensor which costs $310.

It is a very reliable car, as long as you keep up with its care. The only problem I have faced is, no Bluetooth connection with the aux cord.

accountCircle Amber F

It is very reliable. It has problems from me wrecking it and it not getting fix correctly and it still got me all the way to Georgia and back!

accountCircle Kay N

In the beginning, it was reliable. As the car has gotten older, it has been having more and more problems. It's becoming more expensive to maintain than it is worth.

accountCircle Jen D

Yes it is been an extremely reliable for me and my family. We have had no problems so far, and don't anticipate any in the near future.

How Much Is the 2012 BMW 3 Series Worth?

Blue book values range from $12,729 – 20,472 making the 3 Series similarly priced to an Infiniti G37 or Mercedes C-Class. When new, the price range was $34,900 to $60,800. Depreciation is worse than other cars losing about 15% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the 3 Series?

The BMW 3 series is available as a sedan, coupe, wagon, or convertible and is offered in 2 main models. Technology is good for the era with the latest infotainment update in 2011, but there’s a full redesign in 2013.

328i is the entry-level model with:

  • 17-Inch Alloy Wheels
  • Cruise Control
  • Dual-Zone Climate Control

What Engines Come In the 3 Series?

  • The base engine found in the 328i model is a peppy 2.0L 4-cylinder turbo making 240 horsepower.
  • The engine found in the 335i is the powerful 3.0L 6-cylinder turbo which has 300 horsepower and takes only 5 seconds to do 0-60.

What Colors Does the 3 Series Come In?

How Big Is the 3 Series?

The 3 Series is a compact car similar in size to rivals including the Acura TSX and Audi A4. The front seats are comfortable, but the passenger room is cramped in the backseats of all of the models.

Cargo space is average with 13 cubic feet of room in the trunk of the sedan, and up to 48.9 cubic feet of room in the wagon.

VehicleHistory Image

How Does the 3 Series Compare to the Competition?

The Mercedes C-Class is a very close competitor in the same price range. Where the C-Class stands out is with better interior materials, but the BMW is more responsive and fun to drive. We recommend the BMW because there are fewer mechanical problems.

The Audi A4 is another rival costing about $1,000 more. The A4 offers standard all-wheel drive, but the 3 Series is more responsive and fun to drive. Long-term, the BMW is a better choice, with lower ownership costs.

Great BMW coupe for both luxury and comfortable driving.
I love my BMW 3 series because it is a reliable car that is stylish and very comfortable. It has a sleek look unlike other comparable cars and also stands out in comparison to others for its brand and style. Seats are comfortable leather and the space is great for a small call unlike many other couples. Performance wise it has done great, many BMW vehicles have trouble with always having problems but this car has not had any. I have taken it on many road trips and it has been very reliable and the car practically drives itself on those long highways. Wish it had a backup camera or sound signal to help with parking but otherwise is a great car. Come in a bunch of different colors and can be modified in any way that fits for you individually. It is low to the ground which makes you feel centered and as if you can maneuver easily and feel safer driving. I have had other bmw’s before but this has shown to be the best and am hesitant to upgrade. Best part about bmw’s in general is that they are luxury vehicles with many stylish features one would want at an affordable cost unlike many other vehicle brands.

If I don't take care of it will break, like everything else. Make friends with the local independent BMW shop and fix each problem as it arises. Fun and reliable vehicle for daily driving
The vehicle was purchased used in 2016. Comfort - is great with the bucket seats in front and leather. The driver seat feels cozy like a cockpit, everything is within comfortable reaching distance. Features - has the sport package. The audio is great since it has the extra speakers. It has a backup sensor, but no rear camera. Reliability - so far this car has been reliable and should continue to be with regular maintenance. Performance - One thing I did notice is the engine never really purred like most BMWs, but had a very slight growl to it. With the 3 different drive settings to choose from, there is various performance. My daily driving is in Comfort mode. If I am on the highway or long stretches of road without traffic or lights, I'll put it in Eco to conserve fuel. Sport is great when you need that extra pickup, it feels like a turbo boost kicks in. Problems - recently the driver tail light has thrown an error and when inspected, the grounding wire had melted the plastic connecting harness, which after further research is a common problem with the vehicle. The other issue I do not like is the need for run flat tires to be used. This does not allow for a smooth, quiet ride.

Since I purchased my vehicle I have been a the dealer frequently with different issues the dealer states that the problem are mostly about the technology and software. Every couple of months I have to go back with a new issue. I love the vehicle and its features and never expected that I would have so many issues considering how expensive is this vehicle. Comfortable, fuel efficient, elegant ride. Some media features can be cumbersome, but overall media package is comparable to other luxury crossovers. The trim is most impressive with great interior and beautiful moonroof. The drive is smooth and taking the vehicle to sport mood is a thrill. The performance of the vehicle is wonderful as it rushes thru traffic and gets you to the destination that you desire. Its comfortable and quick with a beautiful interior and body style. It's a nice car to have because it has an eco or sports mode, which can be fun at times. It runs great and has a good mpg

The summarize is, this is not bad enough so far.
The BMW 328i sedan features a four-cylinder engine that delivers peppy acceleration. The handling is just superb. The car is fun to drive. The leather seat is much better than anything. It is very comfort and quality is good. But there is also a few problems in this car.
