The 2013 Volkswagen Passat with the 3.6L V6 engine uses SAE 5W-40 oil. Volkswagen also recommends that You use synthetic oil when You need to change it. There are two major oil varieties on the market, conventional and synthetic. Conventional is an older oil type that is petroleum based, and synthetic is a newer oil and it is engineered to give You better protection. Synthetic oil also lasts longer than conventional meaning You will need to change it less often. You can usually go 7,500 miles between changes with synthetic compared to 3,500 to 5,000 miles with conventional. I recommend checking Your oil regularly to make sure that it is full and free from signs of debris.
