Issues with the 2008 MINI Cooper S include rough shifting, stuck gears, and illumination of the warning light. More often than not the problem is caused by a valve cover leak. You may be able to smell burning transmission fluid in this case. Should the issue go on for too long You will end up needing to replace the entire transmission. It is suggested that You change the fluid at least once a year despite the manufacturer stating there is no need to do so. Some service manuals stay to change the fluid every 40k to 100k miles. Replacing the transmission will often cost more than the current value of the car at a price tag of $6500 to $7000. The KBB fair market range for the car itself is only $5,140 to $6,661.
