The transmission in Your 2006 Ford Escape uses a filter to clean contaminants out of the lubricant just like the engine uses an oil filter. Unlike the oil filter this one only needs to be changed every 30,000 miles at the same time You change the ATF. Changing it is a bit more difficult than changing Your oil though. To start You will need to drain the transmission which can be accomplished by removing all but two of the transmission pan bolts, and then loosening the last two just enough for the fluid to start draining. From there You need to finish removing the pan which will give You access to the filter and screen. Remove and replace both of those before You reassemble. Make sure to also clean the pan and replace the gasket. Once You have bolted the pan back on You can then refill the transmission.

Start by removing all but two bolts in the transmission pan, and then loosen the pan to let the oil drain. Remove the last two bolts, and then remove the pan. Remove and replace the filter and screen, and then clean the pan and gasket. Once those have all been cleaned replace everything. Remove the service fill plug and then refill it. Let the engine run and shift through all of the gears and then put the car in park. Check the oil through the service fill port, and then replace the plug.
