The 2007 Ford Escape 4Cylinder 2.0-liter engine has a timing belt that requires replacing at recommended intervals. However the 2007 Ford Escape 2.3-liter 4Cylinder and the 3.0-liter v6 engines have a maintenance-free timing chain. So depending on what engine size You have it may be a timing belt or a timing chain.Basically the timing chain functions in the same way that a timing belt does. That being said there are a number of differenced between the two. Timing chains are housed within the engine and receive lubrication from engine oil and can last a very long time with proper maintenance, while timing belts are located outside of the engine and tend to dry out and crack and needs to be replaced more often.
