The 2005 Chevrolet Malibu's key does indeed include a transponder chip, which is good news for the security of Your car, and bad news for thieves. Arguably, it's also bad news for Your wallet, as it's much more expensive to purchase a key that's equipped as such. Luckily, if You have a working key, You can progRam the newly cut spare Yourself without incurring an additional expense. First, You'll need to insert the newly cut key into Your ignition, and turn it to the ON position for 10 minutes and 30 seconds. Within 45 seconds, turn the key to OFF, and then back to ON again for 10 minutes and 30 seconds more. Repeat the previous step once more, and the new key should be paired.

The 2005 Chevrolet Malibu does include a transponder chip in the key, though it is only used in the New Body Style version.
