When you’re shopping for a crossover SUV, reliability is a top priority. The last thing you want is to run into issues with your new-to-you vehicle shortly after you buy it.

Fortunately, the RAV4 has great longevity ratings — and Toyota is frequently rated as one of the most reliable car brands on the market.

So, how long can you expect a Toyota RAV4 to last?

Ultimately, vehicle longevity depends on a lot of factors. However, Vehicle History commenters report that their RAV4s have lasted well past 200,000 and even 250,000 miles.

If you’re in the market for a compact crossover SUV that you can count on, the Toyota RAV4 might be right for you. Read on to learn more about what this vehicle has to offer and what factors can impact its longevity.

More about the Toyota RAV4

Making its debut to the American market for the 1995 model year, the Toyota RAV4 is a compact crossover SUV that offers seating for up to five passengers. Currently in its fifth generation of production (as of September 2020), this little SUV has a lot to offer.

On its 2020 model, for example, the RAV4 is available in six trim levels and is powered by a capable 2.5L four-cylinder engine at 203 horsepower. Every RAV4 can also be had with an all-wheel-drive system, giving you added traction behind the wheel.

Standard equipment on the RAV4 is generous and includes everything from Toyota’s suite of safety features to a seven-inch touchscreen with smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Behind the rear row, the 2020 RAV4 also boasts an expansive 37.5-cubic-foot cargo area that can expand up to 69.8 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down.

With all this in mind, it’s no surprise that the RAV4 has received many accolades over the years, including:

  • “Top Safety Pick, 2019,” IIHS
  • “5-Star Overall Safety Rating, 2019,” NHTSA
  • “12 Best Family Cars, 2020,” Kelley Blue Book

How Long Does the Toyota RAV4 Last?

The longevity of a Toyota RAV4 will ultimately depend on many factors, including your own driving habits (as well as the driving habits of previous owners) and how well the vehicle has been maintained.

On VehicleHistory.com, however, many RAV4 owners have commented that their vehicles have lasted anywhere from 200,000 to an incredible 365,000 miles with proper maintenance. Some of the issues owners have reported running into with their RAV4s include:

  • Leaking engine seals
  • Transmission failure
  • Failed engine control unit

Depending on how many miles are on the RAV4 you’re looking at, it may still be covered by Toyota’s standard three-year, 36,000 bumper-to-bumper warranty or the five-year, 60,000-mile powertrain warranty as well.

Is a Used Toyota RAV4 Right for You?

From its generous cargo storage to its ample standard features, there’s a lot to love about the Toyota RAV4. And from a reliability standpoint, you can typically feel pretty good about buying a Toyota.

Before you commit to your purchase, though, it’s never a bad idea to check a RAV4’s Vehicle History report to find out everything you need to know!
