Car's Dirty Air Filter

Nissan recommends changing the engine air filter every 10,000 to 30,000 miles depending on your driving habits. The manufacturer also recommends changing the engine air filter every 10,000 miles if you drive in extreme conditions, including gravel roads.

If you drive in typical conditions, then the recommendation is 15,000 to 30,000 miles. Every time you check your vehicle’s fluids, you should also check the air filter to ensure it’s clean. If not, regardless of the mileage, replace it.

The engine air filter is on the driver’s side of the engine bay, behind the battery and in front of the power brake booster.

Steps to Replace the Air Filter on a 2016 Nissan Rogue

  • #1: Locate the hood release latch under the driver’s side dash and pull it until you hear the hood pop open.
  • #2: Locate the hood latch release under the hood. Push it to the left and lift the hood. If applicable, support the hood with the hood support, or if the hydraulic hood shocks are worn, with a sturdy stick, pipe, or another piece of wood.
  • #3: Move to the driver’s side fender. Locate the engine air intake assembly behind the battery and in front of the brake booster and master cylinder.
  • #4: Locate the two retaining clips on the engine air intake assembly. Squeeze the two tabs on top of the housing to release the retaining clips.
  • #5: Pull the center part of the air intake assembly off the filter housing. Pull the ram air assembly off. This part is located near the front of the engine bay. Set the air intake assembly aside.
  • #6: Locate the two metal latches on the air filter housing. You’ll find one on each side of the housing (driver’s side and passenger side). Press the metal latches forward to release the cover from the bottom of the housing.
  • #7: Pull open the front cover of the housing.
  • #8: Pull the old air filter out of the housing, paying attention to its orientation. The pleats face toward the rear of the vehicle.
  • #9: Remove any debris in the housing using a shop vac.
  • #10: Insert the new filter, ensuring the pleats face toward the rear of the vehicle.
  • #11: Reinsert the tabs on the bottom of the air filter housing with the slots on the back of the housing.
  • #12: Close the housing cover.
  • #13: Press the two metal latches toward the rear of the air filter housing and snap them into place.
  • #14: Reinsert the plastic tube in the air box opening and the other end into the ram air intake near the front of the engine bay.
  • #15: Clip the two plastic retaining clips onto the air dam assembly.
