Looking to buy a Kia Telluride? We go over the midsize SUV’s specifications in detail, from pricing and trim levels to safety features and interior amenities.

The Kia Telluride is an exceptionally well-built three-row midsize SUV. Launched in 2019 (as a 2020 model year), the utilitarian has received many accolades like the 2020 World Car of the Year and Motor Trend SUV of the Year alongside several notable mentions.

Named after Colorado’s ski town, Kia’s award-winning SUV is among the best-selling in its segment.

If sales reports of 2021 are factored in, Kia sold 45,438 Tellurides up until June, a 79% increase relative to 2020. Moreover, demand for the Kia Telluride is so high that supply can’t keep up, reports CNN.

Without further clouding you with numbers, let’s just say that Kia has devised the automotive equivalent of a grand slam.

As for specs, the 2022 Kia Telluride is available in four trim levels starting from $32,790. Things remain similar to prior model years as the midsize SUV still comes with a 3.8-liter V6 coupled to an eight-speed automatic. In addition to that, a tech-laden interior is standard with 21 cubic feet of usable cargo space behind the third row.

Also, the base Telluride LX comes with blind-spot assist, forward collision warning, and a host of other safety features along with Kia’s decent warranty coverage.

For the 2022 model year, Kia has updated a few things in the Telluride along with a slight bump in price. We’ll be delving into what the updates are whilst going over the Telluride’s specs in detail. But before that, here’s how the 2022 Kia Telluride differs from its previous model years.

2022 Kia Telluride: Current vs. Classic

In contrast to the 2021 model, the 2022 Kia Telluride has been subtly updated. The keen-eyed amongst you will notice the new Kia logo alongside a slightly revised front grille. Other noticeable changes for the 2022 Kia Telluride include the lower LX and S trims getting a 10.25-inch touchscreen, automatic climate control, and semi-autonomous highway-driving assist.

All trims of the 2022 Telluride now get Kia’s Navigation Based Adaptive Cruise Control as standard equipment. Also, the prices of the 2022 Kia Telluride have slightly increased. The LX and S trims are up by $600 and $700 respectively, while the EX and SX models see a markup of $200 over the 2021 model.

When comparing model years 2020 and 2021, the biggest update was the optional Nightfall Edition package.

Furthermore, Kia added a seven-pin trailer harness and two new color choices for the 2021 model year. Apart from that, the 2021 Telluride saw a nominal price increase, which in today’s age, is a familiar practice among most carmakers.

The 2020 Telluride was launched at a starting price of $31,890 whereas 2021 saw a hike of $300 for the base LX and S trims while the higher-end EX and SX saw prices go up by $600.

In all honesty, it’d be hard to tell apart the 2020, 2021, and 2022 Kia Telluride if put side by side.

Kia Telluride: Pricing & Trim Levels

As per Kia, trim levels of the 2022 Telluride remain unchanged from 2021. The range starts from $32,790 and goes all the way to $42,690 with an additional $1,225 as destination charges.

You are offered a choice of four trims: LX, S, EX, and SX. All come standard with front-wheel-drive, while all-wheel-drive remains an optional extra at $1,900.

All but the base LX and S trims come with optional packages that enhance the looks and utilitarian aspects of the Kia Telluride. Also, some of the available upholstery choices and exterior colors are reserved for the higher trim levels. Here’s a detailed look.

Kia Telluride LX

The base LX starts from MSRP $32,790 and is offered with a choice of five exterior colors: Everlasting Silver, Ebony Black, Glacial White Pearl, Gravity Gray, and Sangria.

Sadly, unlike the exteriors, the only available interior upholstery is Black SynTex. As for amenities, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay is standard.

In addition to that, other handy features like driver talk and quiet mode are available alongside a six-speaker audio system.

Meanwhile, exterior features include auto headlights with LED daytime running lights and heated outside rear-view mirrors (OSRVMs) along with 18-inch alloy wheels.

Kia Telluride S

The S trim starts from $35,290 and gets an additional Black Copper exterior color over the LX. Unlike the LX, interior upholstery is a choice between Black or Gray SynTex material.

As for amenities, they remain fairly similar to the LX. However, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, wireless charging, and sunroof are among the additional features on board.

In terms of the exterior, uprated 20-inch machined-finish alloys remain prominent alongside splashes of chrome.

Kia Telluride EX

The EX trim starts from $37,790 and gets Wolf Gray as an additional exterior color option over the S. Available interior seat trims include a choice between Black or Gray leather upholstery.

On top of the S trim, EX comes with power-folding door mirrors and a powered tailgate as additionals.

You also get heated and ventilated front power seats along with an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Additionally, Kia offers three optional packages for the EX trim:

  • Towing Package ($795): Includes self-leveling rear suspension, tow hitch w/harness.
  • Nightfall Edition Package ($1,395): Includes front and rear gloss black finish skid plates, 20-inch exclusive black alloy wheels, black headlight bezels, roof rails, and radiator grille.
  • EX Premium Package ($1,695): Includes LED headlamps, second-row captain’s chairs with reclining, 20-inch machined alloy wheels, and satin chrome roof rails.

Kia Telluride SX

The fully loaded SX trim starts from $42,690 and gets Dark Moss added to its available color palette. Interior upholstery gets a choice of four leather (Espresso, Gray, Black, Butterscotch) and three premium Nappa leather trims (Black, Gray, Dune Brown). In terms of features, the SX is filled to the brim.

You get a panoramic sunroof, LED headlights with high-beam assist, front fog lights, automatic wipers, and a whole lot more. Of the three available packages, two of them–Towing and Nightfall–remain similar to the EX trim.

  • SX Premium Package ($2,300): Harman Kardon 10-speaker premium audio, heated steering wheel, standard Nappa leather upholstery, heads-up display, a 110-volt power outlet, and heated and ventilated second-row seats.

Kia Telluride: Engine Options & Fuel Economy

Kia hasn’t updated the Telluride’s engine since 2019. As a result, the only available powertrain is a 3.8-liter naturally aspirated V6 that makes 291 horsepower and 262 lb.-ft. of torque.

Power is transmitted via an eight-speed automatic gearbox that drives the front wheels as standard. The Telluride is equipped with four driving modes: Comfort, Eco, Sport, and Smart.

Furthermore, AWD-equipped models get a differential lock and an additional Snow mode for improved traction.

According to Car and Driver, the top-spec Telluride SX managed to hit 0-60 mph in 7.1 seconds and a top speed of 132 mph. As for fuel efficiency, EPA rates the 2022 Kia Telluride at 20 mpg city, 26 mpg highway (FWD), and 19 mpg city, 24 mpg highway (AWD).

Frequently Asked Questions

Apr 1, 2022

How safe is the Kia Telluride?

The Kia Telluride is considered to be a very safe SUV and it has even earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick for how safe it is. In all of the measured crash tests the Telluride scores "Good" according to the IIHS, and the front crash prevention system scores as "superior" in both vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian categories.

Kia has been adding more safety technology to their vehicles in recent years and the Telluride comes with a full suite of safety features. These include things such as a backup camera, lane departure warnings, automatic braking, and blind-spot monitoring. All of these things combine to make it an SUV that focuses on safety.

If you are in the market for a midsize SUV and want something with the latest safety tech you should check out the Telluride. This is a great option that has all the safety features you'd expect in an expensive luxury SUV at a fraction of the price.

What's wrong with the Kia Telluride?

The Kia Telluride is a relatively new model to be introduced by Kia and there are not many problems that have been reported with them yet. One of the few problems involves the vehicle's electrical system. There have been reported cases of sensors failing around the vehicle and the camera system not displaying properly on the screen.

Some owners have complained about the windshields on the Telluride cracking as they heat cycle. This can be a result of either a small imperfection when the vehicle was assembled or a bad production run of glass. Kia has not commented on any of the glass issues and they seem to be relatively rare.

Overall the Telluride seems to be a decent vehicle and there are not any reports of serious problems. These are new though and there is always a chance that problems could develop in the future but owners will just have to wait and see.

What is the difference between the Telluride EX and SX?

Two of the most popular trims for the Kia Telluride are the EX and the SX. The SX is an upgrade over the EX and it costs about $5,000 more to make that change. When you do decide to step up to the SX though you do get some better features.

Some of the differences include captain's chairs in the second row of the SX, dual sunroofs for a more panoramic feel, a 10 speaker Harmon Kardon sound system, a 7 inch LCD display instead of the 3.5 inch on the EX, interior ambient lighting, and automatic high beams. All of these combine to make the SX a more luxurious SUV choice.

If you are in the market for a Telluride and you would prefer to have captain's chairs in the second row to fit adults easier then the SX is a worthy upgrade. You should take a look at both and see if the price difference is worth it to you when you are ready to buy.

Transmission and heat and cooling trouble in the 2020 Kia Telluride SX.
We purchased a new Telluride in May 2020. After 4,500 miles the transmission failed. It was replaced under Kia warranty. One month after new transmission installed, it began revving and refusing to accelerate. We also experienced problems with the heat and cooling system not working. After 2 attempts to fix transmission, it is still revving high and is very hesitant to accelerate jerking and occasionally we get an error and we are forced to pull off the side of the road and restart vehicle. It’s a nice vehicle overall, but I am very disappointed in having 2 transmissions fail within 6 months of ownership.

Why the 2020 Kia Telluride S is a great car.
The Kia telluride is one of the best cars that I have ever gotten. The Kia is really smooth when you drive and it is really comfortable. It is extremely spacious and it provides a lot of features that most cars do not. There are about 6 different plugins all throughout the car making is really convenient. The backseat passengers can change the ac settings to fit their needs. There are about 5 different options of driving modes including sport mode, economic, snow, regular, etc.

2020 Kia Telluride S - great safety.
Absolutely love the Kia telluride. The ride is incredibly smooth. The safety features are phenomenal. When you turn the car off, it tells you to check the backseat so you do not forget any kids! Also the steering wheel will vibrate and shake if someone or something is behind the car. The seats are amazingly comfortable! It has a huge screen in the front that looks so sleek and nice. I had never owned a Kia, but I will definitely go back for another telluride down the road.

2020 Kia Telluride EX. A very functional and helpful family car.
It is very comfortable and is easy to use with a good screen. It fits my family very comfortably! I love the colors of it and all the features operate very smooth. This includes features such as seat recliners, air conditioning, sound/music, heating, and Bluetooth phone connection. This car is great for family vacation because it has a lot of room for luggage in the trunk while also having enough seating for an entire family. It is also a very good looking car. Love it!

Great 2020 Kia Telluride LX with amazing room!
Is a really nice car but lacks some of the little things that I used to get in my luxury Acura. It has a great style and has tons of room for multiple people. Has leather, 2nd row captains seats and fully fold down third row. The third row is very spacious and a large size adult has no problem fitting. The little things that it is missing are items like a garage door opener, seat memory, etc. The infotainment system is nice and the heated and cooled seats are awesome.

2020 Kia Telluride S. Third row option with captain seats!
I was looking for a third row option vehicle with captains seats that wouldn't completely break the bank. I test drove many vehicles before deciding on the telluride. The options for the price are unmatched. It is fantastic on gas mileage for being a larger SUV. I love the raised screen because it allows me to see the navigation better. I do wish it had a larger storage space in the back without having to put the third row down.

2020 Kia telluride sx - 1 year ownership.
We ordered the vehicle the first day it was available. It was well worth the 4 month wait to get it. We have owned several different SUVs of this size and this, by far, has been our favorite. It is extremely comfortable and offers great features. We have driven it locally and on long trips and we have been very pleased with the gas mileage and performance. I really cannot think of one negative thing to say.

2020 Kia Telluride SX. Great SUV. Tons of space. Captain seats are great!
Things I love: so much space! By far the biggest interior of any SUV I've owned. Love the look, how it drives. Great vehicle for the price. The negatives: no automatic tailgate. Has every other bell and whistle but not this one and would be more than helpful! No automatic start without uvo subscription. Another thing that I would have thought came standard on all. New vehicles over $30,000.

2020 Kia Telluride EX is a great purchase!
The car seems to handle itself pretty well in all types of weather. It looks sleek and feels like luxury without having the luxury price tag. The safety features are great; it reminds me to look in the backseat every time I turn off the car to ensure I do not forget any precious cargo. My three dogs fit in the back easily. The third row can go up and down quickly when needed.

A pretty nice roomy 2020 Kia Telluride SX SUV!
Easy controls and lot of features. Sports mode is by far the best. Ambience lighting is cool and you can change the color. No crazy about the lid the covers the charging console area. I always leave it open as it is difficult to open and I do not want to break it. I also wish the 3rd row had push button seats. I have had it 7 months now and no problems.
accountCircle Kylie H on July 29, 2021
Overall I really love the 2020 Kia Telluride S!
I really like that it includes so many safety features as standard. Other makes of vehicle require you to pay extra for these safety features. I also really like how many passengers the vehicle can hold while still looking cool. Probably my only dislike is that I cannot lock the car while I fill the gas tank. It just beeps at you if you try to do that.

Great 2020 Kia Telluride S! Comfortable and luxurious with a great price tag.
The telluride is overall a great vehicle. I have had only one issue with the windshield cracking but they fixed it no questions asked. We have a family of 6 and it fits all of us comfortably and there is enough leg room in the rear seats for me to sit comfortably also. An added bonus is that it can hold the stroller on the back cargo area!

2020 Kia Telluride SX: Moving seats can be freaky too!
I love the comfort and overall feel while sitting in the vehicle. The safety features are awesome and really make me feel safe driving such a large SUV. I will say I do not like that the seat immediately goes bag once the car is turned off. It always makes me think I am still moving and that I forgot to put the car in park.

This 2020 Kia Telluride LX is gorgeous! I love it so much.
I have never had any problems. I love this car and the features so much! It has a ton of USB outlets which are so convenient for the kiddos. I love the fact that it has apple car play, which I think is a big deal for iPhone users. It is gorgeous on the outside and the interior details are amazing.

Sleek, style family 2020 Kia Telluride LX that keeps dad looking cool!
There is really nothing that I like about the car. It drives smooth, it has all the safety features I would want. I wish I didn't need a cord for apple play and that I had captain seats for second row seating for the kids, but overall really love it. This is my first Kia and I would buy again.

The Kia 2020 telluride is the vehicle of the future.
Absolutely zero problems. The leather seats are very high quality, the range on it is amazing, the speakers sound great, and there's seat cooling and heating. Additionally, the different modes on the vehicle is cool. There's sport mode, eco mode. Smart, and two more that I cannot remember.

2020 Kia Telluride SX has a few kinks but a great vehicle.
I hate they did not add a remote start to this years vehicle. I also do not like that the moonroof is so small and does not open that wide. I do however love the heated steering wheel and the ambient lighting in the vehicle. It has a smooth ride and luxurious feel.

2020 Kia Telluride EX has a lot of space and room inside. Has a massive trunk.
The alarm goes off of the windows are rolled down and you lock the car and walk away. Other than that there really are no problems with the car. Actually, there are no seat warmers even though it is a brand new car. In addition, it has no sunroof. I wish there was!
