If you need to press the buttons on your Jeep key fob several times or it isn’t working at all, the problem could be your key fob battery. Jeep key fob batteries usually last between three and four years under normal use.
Replacement fobs can get expensive and need to be programmed. Replacing the Jeep key fob battery can be simple and a lot more affordable than replacing the entire key fob.
What kind of battery goes in a Jeep key fob?
Key fobs use small coin-type batteries. The number of your key fob battery will be printed on it. One common key fob battery is CR 2032. Depending on your Jeep model and year, your key fob could use a CR 2032, CR 2025, or a CR 2450 battery.
Where Can I Find One, and How Much Will it Cost?
You can find a Jeep key fob battery through various online retailers or auto supply and hardware stores. It will cost approximately $4.99, depending on your Jeep model and year. The largest model of key fob battery is CR 2450. It may cost more than smaller key fob batteries like CR 2025.
Steps for Replacing a Jeep Key Fob Battery
Before getting started with replacing your key fob battery, gather the supplies and equipment you’ll need. Essential items are:
- A replacement battery (CR 2032, CR 2025, or CR 2450)
- A small flat-head screwdriver
Once you’ve gotten together the items you need, insert the tip of your flat-head screwdriver into the key fob seam by your key ring mount. Press down gently to separate the top and bottom pieces of plastic. Be careful not to twist the screwdriver head because it could break the plastic. In certain Jeep models, you’ll also need to remove the emergency key before proceeding.
Open the top and bottom pieces. You’ll see the old battery, a circuit board, and a rubber keypad. Remove the old battery from the housing.
Take care to note which side of the battery is facing up. Replace the new battery in the same orientation as the old battery. Usually, the negative side of the battery will face down.
Put the circuit board back in the keypad, then replace the keypad. The last step is snapping the two key fob halves, top and bottom, back together.
You won’t need to reprogram your key fob if just replacing the key fob battery. However, you can find key fob reprogrammers at auto supply dealers.
