Jaguar F-Type’s Engine Options Include Supercharged V6 or 575-HP V8

The F-Type has featured multiple engines over its lifetime, including a 2.0L turbo four-cylinder, a supercharged V6, and a V8 capable of 575 HP. While some may consider the V6 the top choice, overall, we can’t get enough of the V8, which makes the F-Type a thrill to drive.

Key Points

  • The F-Type is available with three engine options that it shares with the rest of the Jaguar/Land Rover lineup.
  • The 2018 model introduced a base turbocharged four-cylinder with 296 horsepower. And 2021 saw the F-Type reworked and given simplified engine options: a 2.0-liter four-cylinder, a supercharged V6 with 380 horsepower, or a supercharged V8 with up to 575.
  • V6-equipped models can have either a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic. And V6 and V8 models can have rear-or all-wheel drive. We think the latest 5.0-liter V8 is the best engine of the bunch, specifically the detuned 495-horsepower version found in the F-Type S, it gives most of what you’ll need for a much lower price tag than an R model with the maxed-out 575.

F-Type’s Three Engine Options Provide a Wide Range of Performance

Debuting in 2014, the Jaguar F-Type combines stunning good looks with performance to match. Considered the spiritual successor to the famed Jaguar E-Type, the F-Type can be had in a hardtop or convertible body style, in both mild and wild trim levels. While the car is a slow seller (as is expected of any halo sports car), the Jaguar F-Type was recently refreshed in 2021 with some new styling elements and simplified powertrain options.

However, while the 2021 lineup features three engine options, Autoweek has said that for 2022, only the V8 will remain: “We aren’t saying the four or six-cylinder Jaguar F-Types were bad. They weren’t. Both engines made for a fun experience and let you enjoy one of the best-looking modern Jaguars without having to drop the big bucks on the V8-equipped models. This repositioning focuses on what makes the F-Type special, which is only amplified by the hilarious Jaguar V8’s snarl.”

F-Type Ingenium Four-cylinder Named One of Ward’s ’10 Best Engines’

Introduced in 2018, the Jaguar F-Type’s base engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder, mated to an eight-speed automatic. It’s a highly-rated powerplant, winning a spot on “Ward’s 10 Best Engines” list for 2018.

Known as the Ingenium engine, this modular engine design is shared with multiple Jaguar/Land Rover products, and the F-Type specifically uses the AJ200 version. Pumping out 296 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque, this base car doesn’t provide much excitement according to Car and Driver. “Frankly, this F-Type 2.0T didn’t deliver impressive performance numbers,” says Car and Driver. “Taking 6.4 seconds to get to 60 mph puts it two full seconds behind the last V6 F-type we tested, an all-wheel-drive 400 Sport coupe, and 0.7 second behind the manual-transmission, 181-hp 2019 Miata we recently tested.”

V6 Preferred Over V8 by Critics who Call it ‘Motoring Heaven’

Available from the launch of the F-Type is the 3.0 liter supercharged V6, code-named AJ126. It’s essentially an AJ133 V8 engine with two cylinders taken away. While V6s usually feature a 60-degree bank, this engine has a 90-degree design to allow space between the cylinder heads for the supercharger and intercooler.

One of the reasons that Jaguar will no longer be offering this engine in the F-Type from 2022 is that it’s being replaced with a new inline-six turbocharged motor based off the Ingenium design (though the F-Type won’t get this engine).

From 2014-2017, the base engine in the F-Type was this V6, which produced 335 horses and 332 lb.-ft. of torque. Opt for the S (or later R-Dynamic) trim level, and power is upped to 380 horsepower and 339 lb.-ft. of torque. You can choose a six-speed manual, or the same eight-speed automatic shared throughout the lineup, and you can have it with rear- or all-wheel drive.

Starting in 2018, Jaguar offered the 400 Sport trim with the same V6, now pushing 400 horses and 339 lb.-ft. of torque. This trim is offered with the automatic only.

Business Insider actually preferred the V6 over the V8, stating: “Take away two cylinders and it becomes a magnificent thing. It’s easily among the best-sounding V6s ever heard.” They conclude “grabbing gears and putting the hammer down in the V6 is a sexy little slice of motoring heaven.”

F-Type’s Latest Range-topping Engine is Potent 575-HP V8

Topping out the lineup is the AJ133 Gen III supercharged V8 engine. This 5.0-liter engine is available with multiple output options, starting with the 495-horsepower and 460 lb.-ft. of torque version found in the F-Type S, which can hit 60 miles per hour in 4.2 seconds.

Next up is the F-Type R, produced from 2014-2019. The V8 has 550 horsepower and 502 lb.-ft. of torque. Opt for the special SVR trim and output climbs to 575 horsepower and 516 lb.-ft. of torque. But this model was discontinued in 2020, when the F-Type was given a major overhaul.

However, the latest range-topping engine is the same 575-hp V8, now installed in the R trim (P450 models get a 444-hp version of the V8 to replace the V6 in 2022).

V8 Gets Quieter but Maintains Powerful ‘Snarl’

Regardless of power output, this V8 has been given high praise for the exhaust note, and it’s an added reason to spring for the most expensive models. Jalopnik states you’ll, “unleash a machine gun-wielding dragon with a mouth full of fireworks. Best believe you’re gonna feel plenty fast.”

Is it too loud? Jaguar’s solution was to install a quiet mode in the updated 2020 models, which reduces the sound on startup. Car & Driver tells us the updated exhaust sound drew a bit less attention. “On overrun, the outgoing V8 cars always sounded like someone tossed a string of firecrackers into a drainage culvert,” says Car and Driver. “There’s still a snarl when you back off the throttle, but you no longer expect the exhaust to leave a trail of lightly smoldering shrubs in your wake.”

Is the Jaguar F-Type Reliable?

As the F-Type sells in small numbers and usually isn’t a car relied upon for everyday use, reliability ratings are hard to come by. Car Indigo rates the car as reliable, given no major concerns over the latest three model years.

Jaguar’s new car powertrain warranty covers five years or 60,000 miles. Every Certified Pre‑owned Jaguar is subjected to a 165‑point inspection and given a two-year, 100,000-mile warranty.

Vehicle History‘s owner reports indicate a positive experience, with 56% of reviews for the 2020 Jaguar F-Type being five-star reviews and an additional 24% being four-star reviews.

Which F-Type Engine is the Best?

You won’t be disappointed any time you slip behind the wheel of any F-Type, but we recommend going with one of the V8 options. The F-Type is all about theater and the emotion of driving, so it seems fitting to put not just the most powerful engine in it, but the one that’s guaranteed to generate the most looks and best driving experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Jaguar F-Type use a Ford engine?

The engines that are found in the Jaguar F-Type are not Ford engines, they are produced in-house by Jaguar and they are built on the Jaguar AJ-8 platform. This platform has been in production since 1996 and has been used in a wide variety of V8 engines that Jaguar has made. The 3.9L V8 was used by Ford for the 2000-2006 Lincoln LS and the 2002-2005 Ford Thunderbird.

The AJ-8 engines are also made in what is called a "plant within a plant". This is where Jaguar had their engine factory inside of a Ford factory, but they were unique engines that were made by Jaguar. Since 2020 Jaguar has been able to take over production of the AJ-8 after the Ford Bridgend plant closed.

Although the engines found in the Jaguar F-Type have come out of a plant owned by Ford over the years they are very different than a Ford motor. These are Jaguar designed and with the F-Type, they are unique to Jaguar.

Is the Jaguar F-Type a reliable car?

The Jaguar F-Type does not score well on reliability. These have an anticipated reliability rating of 2 out of 5 from J.D. Power, which puts them in the poor category. The main reason for this is Jaguar's historic reliability ratings are not great, and they have a reputation for building cars that are known to have mechanical problems.

Jaguar has a long history of making cars that can be sporty, fun, and luxurious but they have been plagued with a lot of issues. If you are looking for a more reliable F-Type then going with the V6 model can be a better choice. These tend to have a better motor in them since they have the latest engine technology, but they are still prone to some of the same issues that you will find in the V8.

Overall Jaguar is not known for being a car brand that builds cars to last a long time. This results in them having lower than average reliability ratings across the board. The F-Type is a fun powerful coupe and convertible, but there are more reliable options on the market.

How fast is a Jaguar F-Type?

The Jaguar F-Type is a relatively quick vehicle being Jaguar's purpose-built sportscar. These have a top speed of 200 miles per hour with the SVR trim. They also are capable of doing the sprint to 60 miles per hour in 3.5 seconds with the SVR engine as well.

The latest generation of the F-Type coupe is offered in five main trim categories and they offer a coupe and convertible in each. The base F-Type Coupe can get to 60 miles per hour in 5.4 seconds and has a top speed of 155 miles per hour with the 4 cylinder engine. If you upgrade to the 6 cylinder engine that 0 to 60 time is improved to 5.1 seconds, and the top speed is raised to 171 miles per hour.

Overall the F-Type is a quick sportscar and Jaguar was focused on building something that could compete with the other sportscars in the price range from Porsche, Mercedes, and BMW. If you're in the market for something fast these are worth taking a look at.

Driving into the future with the 2019 F-Type Jag
The car drives very smooth, sport mode allows for quick shifts. The pop up prnds prevents easy theft from the car. Also the seats have massage settings and heating/cooling which allows for comfortable drives. The onboard navigation system uses live traffic feeds which makes driving a breeze. The touch sensor glove box is very cool and innovative, as well as the awesome designed air vents looking like they belong on a jet of some sort. The park assist feature allows for easy parking. Also, the onboard collision protector prevents accidents very well.

The 2017 jaguar f-type is a 2 seat luxury sports car.
The v8 models deliver a potent performance punch along with a symphony of engine and exhaust noise. Predictable handling and powerful brakes instill confidence. The interior is as gorgeous as the exterior. The base v6 models deliver far less impressive performance. Technology interface is not as intuitive as some competitors. Not very generous when it comes to passenger and cargo space. Some compromises to comfort have been made in the name of performance.

2018 F-Type - Sporty and styling with a flare of sophistication.
My car is a sports car. It is a two seater. It has a spoiler in the back which raises when you go over 60 miles per hour. It has leather interior with red stitching. It comes equipped with surround sound Meriden, a backup mirror and a GPS system. There is a screen in the back which stays up when the top is down and I do not like that. It is metallic silver with a black roof. It is comfortable for me because I am little, not made for a big person.

The 2020 f-type tech features have been amazing.
Overall, the car has tremendous performance. The comfort was something I was scared would fade but after owning the car for nearly a year now the seats are as comfortable as when I took the test drive. The reliability of the vehicle has been the most impressive aspect. I work a job where I cannot be absent and with timely oil changes this car will always get you where you need to be.

Checker custom trim is amazing on the 2020 f-type
At this point vehicle reliability is on point. Comforts are amazing and features and programs very much promotes safety and convenience. The interior is much more reserved, but its clean lines and high-quality materials are sure to age well. Handling is superb for an SUV and ride quality is good, though larger wheels do firm up the experience noticeably.

Gorgeous, impressive red 2017 jaguar f-pace.
This is my favorite car I have ever driven. It drives so smoothly and can accelerate from 0 to 100 in a matter of seconds. I have it in red, which I think is the prettiest color for the car. The display is hi-tech and user friendly. I am not usually a fan of SUVs, but this one is so sleek and beautiful that I do not mind.

The jaguar 2020 f-type is amazing.
I love the way the car tends to drive along the freeway. I also enjoy the interior of the car it is so sleek and modern. It is pretty spacy. The exterior is amazing it looks so nice. I feel it could use improvement with the steering wheel. It does get a little hard to turn though. But that is the only criticism I have.

Amazing. I love how it drives along with decent gas mileage. The color is amazing even after 3 years, it has great room and is super cozy. The reliability is outstanding, I have not had any problems since owning it. I wish more cars were like that. I love the comfort, room, quality of all the features.

Love my 2018 f-pace! This is one vehicle that you will enjoy driving!
I have absolutely loved this vehicle! It is a pleasure to drive, with all of the controls right at my fingertips! When I connect my phone to CarPlay, I can send texts, listen to texts, have my maps on my screen, play music through Pandora or a number of other apps. Would get another one in a heartbeat!

2016 F-Type has a button to open the spacers making it louder.
Battery problems sometimes otherwise no issues. It is very comfortable even though the cabin can feel quite small. It is low so be careful on some roads. The supercharged v8 is very fast and will go when you want it. Generally a really fun car to drive that is pretty loud by looks and sound.

2014 F-type. A silver bullet. It is very attractive to look at.
This is a two seater sports car. It has a retractable spoiler on the trunk. It has a silver body and a black convertible roof. The interior seats are black leather with red piping. It has a navigation system as well as a rear view camera. It has 35000 miles and is in excellent condition.

2017 F-Type Jaguar is the best car I ever had, like a best friend.
So far, I have had my jaguar for just over two years. I have no kind of problems with so ever. The only kind of maintenance I have had done to this car is routine oil changes, tires rotated, and I things like that. It pretty much still drives like the day I drove off the lot with it.

Nice, luxurious and fast 2015 f-type
It goes really fast quickly. Luxury seats, GPS, backup cam. Siri radio extra. Leather seats heatable. Nice all black paint job. 22 inch rims, has a sunroof top, it has cruise control. Peanut butter color interior seats, air bags, anti lock, dark tinted windows all around the jaguar.

The 2019 jaguar f-type- best car of the year!
The f-type vehicle has agile handling, brawny engine performance, and a luxe interior, very good spacing, and outstanding performance. It is great on gas, great on mileage. I have not had any issues with it since it has been purchased. This is definitely a vehicle I would recommend.

Really enjoy the performance of the 2019 F-Type
Issues with the repair process and replacement parts take a long time for repairs and adding other additional items. The second issues is the gas pump latch release locations. It is located in a rear that is not convenient. For a car this expensive there should be no issues at all.

Very reliable and smooth ride. I have never had any issues with it, and affordable to fix at the dealership. I will own another one of these cars in the future as they have very good performance and speed when I need it. The comfort inside is also very nice and made well.

2017 F-Type scores high
Performance is a nine out of ten. The comfort is a ten. Reliability is also a ten. Features are red and shiny. The breaks are a bit unsuitable but the overall price and range of the car makes it completely worth the buy. I would recommend to anyone who were to ask me.
