The Dodge RAM ProMaster is a popular choice, especially among business owners with large equipment-hauling needs. This spacious cargo van has a lot to offer, including an optional diesel engine on some model years. As with many vehicles, however, the Dodge ProMaster has had its fair share of recalls.
What are some of the major recalls that have been issued on the Dodge ProMaster?
Some of them include:
- Circuit corrosion caused by water leaks
- Sticking accelerator pedals
- Shifter cable disconnection
- Fan motor fire hazards
In this article, we’ll cover each of these major Dodge ProMaster recalls, what they entail, and how Chrysler is offering to repair them. We’ll also walk you through the steps you should take to check for open recalls on your Dodge ProMaster and schedule repairs as needed.
2014 Dodge ProMaster: Water Leak and Circuit Corrosion
NHTSA Recall ID: 14V294000
In this June 2014 recall issued by the NHTSA, up to 17,727 2014 ProMaster vehicles may be affected. With this recall, it was discovered that water intrusion may occur around the van’s in-floor battery cover and door footwell trim.
This water seepage, in turn, could cause corrosion of the vehicle’s electrical circuits.
If ignored, water intrusion and circuit corrosion could not only affect the performance of the vehicle but may also lead to the disabling of features such as airbags, exterior lights, door locks, and more. And of course, if the airbags become disabled, it can increase the risk of injury or death in the event of a crash.
Owners of recalled vehicles can have an inspection done at a licensed Chrysler dealership, where a technician will check for leakage and corrosion. If corrosion is discovered, the affected connectors, circuits, and fuses will be replaced as needed.
The in-floor battery ignition fuse will also be relocated on affected vehicles to prevent corrosion due to water seepage.
2014 Dodge ProMaster: Sticking Accelerator Pedal
NHTSA Recall ID: 14V032000
While this particular recall affects just over 7,000 2014 ProMaster models, it’s one to be aware of due to the severity of the problem. On affected vehicles, it has been found that if the accelerator pedal is depressed at a certain angle, it can inadvertently get stuck in the wide-open throttle position.
If this recall is ignored, drivers may be at a greater risk of getting into an accident, as the accelerator may become stuck while driving.
Chrysler is addressing this recall by replacing the accelerator stopper pedal on all affected vehicles with a larger one that is not susceptible to getting stuck. If your vehicle is affected by this recall, schedule repairs as soon as possible.
In the meantime, however, keep in mind that you can still break your vehicle (even if the accelerator becomes stuck) by using the brake pedal and turning off the vehicle once it has come to a safe stop.
2014 –2019 Dodge ProMaster: Shifter Cable Disconnection
NHTSA Recall ID: 20V036000
This January 2020 recall affects up to 222,207 ProMaster vehicles made from 2014 through 2019. With this recall, it was discovered that the transmission shifter cable may not have been properly secured during manufacturing.
As a result, the cable itself may separate from the transmission, which can prevent the vehicle from shifting as intended.
If this recall is ignored, affected vehicles may be at a greater risk of getting into an accident — especially if the failure occurs while the vehicle is in motion.
The driver may be unable to determine the actual gear position, which can result in unintended vehicle movement that may cause an accident and/or injury.
Recalled vehicles can be repaired at a Chrysler dealer free of charge; dealers will replace the transmission shift cable.
2015 –2018 ProMaster: Fan Motor Fire Hazard
NHTSA Recall ID: 19V818000
Another recall was issued on the Dodge ProMaster, this time on more than 99,000 2015–2018 models. This recall specifically affects models that were equipped with either the 3.0L diesel engine or the 3.6L gasoline engine and air conditioning when sold new.
With this recall, it was found that the cooling fan can abruptly stop working, which can cause the vehicle’s cooling fan motor to overheat.
If left unrepaired, vehicles with this issue could be at a greater risk of catching on fire, as an overheated fan motor can pose a fire hazard.
Chrysler is addressing this recall by replacing the engine cooling fan module on all affected vehicles at no charge.
