Gold-Black BMW i3 From Front-Driver Side

The BMW i3 is the company’s first zero-emissions all-electric vehicle. And even though it’s a BMW, it’ll actually set you back less than most Teslas. Tesla proved that it could be done, and BMW is proving that it can be done with style.

What is the price of a 2020 BMW i3?

The 2020 BMW i3 MSRP ranges between $44,450 for a Base model and $51,500 for an i3s Range Extender.

At under $50,000 to start out, the i3 is surprisingly affordable for a luxury all-electric. But the question isn’t just what it costs, but whether it’s worth it. So, is the i3 worth it? That’s what we’re here to find out. Let’s see what this car is packing.

BMW i3 Trim and Packages

Base

The Base model starts at $44,450. At that price you’re getting an electric motor with 170 horsepower and 184 ft. lbs. of torque, and it’ll go up to 153 miles on a charge.

You can upgrade to a BMW i3 with Range Extender at $48,300, which will get you the same horsepower, but will get you 200 miles to the charge.

Like just about every electric car, the transmission is a one-speed automatic. It’s hard to shift gears when you don’t have gears, so this is pretty much standard for this class of car.

Standard features include speed sensitive rain detecting wipers, heated front seats, leather steering wheel, cruise control with steering wheel controls, and get this, the rear doors open in reverse. Cool, right?

For $2,350 you can add the Technology + Driving Assistance Package, and that comes with automatic high beams, advanced real-time traffic information, and ACC Stop & Go + Active Driving Assist.

The other packages are mostly cosmetic, but worth checking out if you want your i3 to be as stylish as possible:

  • Giga World with light eucalyptus wood trim ($1,800)
  • Tera World with dark oak wood trim and Tera leather interior ($2,600)
  • Mega World with electronic brown trim ($1,400)

You can also add a moon roof for $1,000, a Harman Kardon sound system for $800, and a heat pump for $150.

S

The S starts at $47,650 for the 153-mile variant, or $51,500 for the Range Extended 200-mile model. Most of the mechanical specs are otherwise the same, but you get a little more horsepower at 181 hp and 199 ft. lbs. of torque.

Inside, the features are basically the same between the i3 and the i3s, and so are all of the packages and options. What you’re paying extra for in the S model is really just that extra horsepower and a sportier feel.

The S will go 0-60 in 6.8 seconds, while the standard i3 will get there in 7.2. A minor difference in speed, but then, the difference in price is pretty minor, too.

Are We Ready for the Electric Car?

The electric car is here. It’s not just a weird novelty anymore, it’s not just a concept car. Just about every major automaker has one in the works. The question is whether they’ve got one that suits you.
