Coolant Leak within EGR May Cause Fire

NHTSA Recall ID: 18V755000

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system on some BMW models features an integrated cooler for cooling exhaust gases that are recirculated back into the engine to reduce emissions. If the cooler suffers an internal leak, however, the glycol coolant can mix with diesel engine soot.

When combined with high temperatures, the resulting diesel soot particles can melt the engine intake manifold on contact. In some cases, said particles can even smolder and catch fire. Ignoring this recall could easily increase the risk of an engine fire, as well as pose performance and drivability issues.

Your BMW dealer will perform an inspection of the EGR cooler and, if necessary, replace the faulty component. If there are any signs of an EGR cooler leak, your dealer will also replace the engine intake manifold, free of charge.
