Don’t worry! We’ll take an in-depth look at some of the more recent recalls for the BMW 530i, plus you’ll learn what to do if your vehicle has a recall issue and needs service by a trusted and qualified repair specialist.

Coolant System Malfunction

NHTSA Recall ID: 98V178000

Coolant pressures and temperatures can increase if a coolant system component fails. This could cause hot coolant to escape through a crack or seam in the heater core end piece, resulting in serious burns for unwary occupants. Other cooling system components can also suffer damage.

Repairs include installing a radiator cap of a newer design. This design provides greater coolant flow and better pressure control if the vehicle overheats. This recall involves 1989–1995 BMW 530i models.

Engine Auxiliary/Cooling Fan Failure

NHTSA Recall ID: 01V206000

If the engine auxiliary/cooling fan motor fails, the fan control unit’s electronic circuitry could overload and also fail. Not only does this put the vehicle at risk of overheating, but the circuitry could also catch fire. This recall affects the 2001 model year BMW 530i.

The solution involves replacing the fan, free of charge.

Engine Auxiliary/Cooling Fan Failure

NHTSA Recall ID: 02V138000

This recall is a supplement to the previous recall #01V206000. A failing engine auxiliary/cooling fan motor can also cause the fan control unit’s electronic circuitry to overload and fail. Putting off this recall could put your vehicle at risk of overheating or starting an engine fire.

As with the previous recall, the solution involves a fan replacement, if one hasn’t been done already.

Airbag Control Module Malfunction

NHTSA Recall ID: 03V421000

On some BMW 530i models, the front and/or side airbags may accidentally deploy due to a fault in the airbag control module’s microprocessor. This flaw can also activate the battery safety terminal, disconnecting the starter cable from the battery and preventing the vehicle from starting.

Serious injuries can happen if the airbags go off unexpectedly. The fix for this issue involves replacing the airbag control module.

Potential Fuel Leak From Fuel Supply Line

NHTSA Recall ID: 04V303000

A potential fuel leak could occur due to an improperly-installed circular retention clip holding the quick-release fuel line in place. The retention clip could fail in a severe frontal crash, causing the coupling to come undone and fuel to spray into the engine compartment.

This issue poses a serious safety hazard, as spilled fuel can ignite if it comes in contact with any heat source in the engine bay. The potential end result is an engine fire that damages other components.

BMW’s fix involves installing a new circular retention clip onto the quick-release coupling.

The Engine May Stall and/or not Start

Some BMW 530i models may be equipped with digital engine management control (EMC) units that were manufactured according to improper specifications. Affected vehicles may experience engine stalling, which in turn causes a momentary loss of power steering and eventual loss of power brake assist.

You’ll find it harder to properly control your vehicle without power steering or power brake assist. This loss of control can also increase the likelihood of a crash. Your BMW dealer will replace the faulty ECM unit with a new one, free of charge.

Seat Back Side Bolster Heating Element May be Damaged

NHTSA Recall ID: 04V575000

On BMW 530i models equipped with heated front seats, portions of the seat heating mat could be damaged through excessive wear and tear on the seat backrest’s side bolsters. The resulting damage could cause the heating mat to overheat in this area.

The damaged heating element could burn a small hole through the seat cover and even cause small burns to the seat occupant. Your BMW dealer will modify the seat heater circuit to prevent this issue from happening in the future.

Inflators in Sports Steering Wheels May Explode

NHTSA Recall ID: 19V015000

In 2001–2003 BMW 530is equipped with the optional sports steering wheel, the driver’s frontal airbag could rupture when deployed, sending metal fragments throughout the cabin. These fragments could strike you and other occupants, causing serious injury in the event of a crash.

The culprit is an inflator propellant that degrades with exposure to high temperatures and humidity. This could cause the inflator to explode and put vehicle occupants at risk. Your BMW dealer will replace the airbag module, free of charge.

PCV Heater May Short Circuit

NHTSA Recall ID: 19V273000

The positive crankcase ventilation valve (PCV) heater prevents the valve from freezing in cold weather. However, the heater could short circuit, leading to several mechanical and safety issues.

For starters, an electrical short in the PCV heater could cause the valve to overheat and melt, putting the vehicle at greater risk of catching fire. This issue may also interfere with the performance and fuel economy of your 2006 BMW 530i.

To correct this issue, BMW will replace the PCV heater at no cost to you.

No Backup Camera Display Image/FMVSS 111

NHTSA Recall ID: 19V684000

On certain 2018–2020 530i and 530i xDrives, it’s possible to adjust the backup camera’s display image to the point where the rearview image no longer appears on-screen when the vehicle is in reverse. The issue persists even after restarting the vehicle.

A broken backup camera could make it harder to see obstacles behind your vehicle while reversing out of driveways and parking spaces. A free-of-charge software update will restore the original display setting.
