Red 2019 Chevrolet Traverse From Front-Driver Side

There are a lot of fantastic features on today’s vehicles. Some of them help to reduce fuel usage, saving you money when operating them. Sometimes, this can become a problem.

If you have a 2019 Chevy Traverse, you may want to check out the auto stop feature.

How can you turn off the auto stop feature on the 2019 Chevy Traverse

The 2019 Chevy Traverse features an auto stop-and-start feature that turns the car off when you’re stopped at a light. This aims to reduce fuel costs. There are many reasons why you may want to turn it off. The simplest way to turn it off is to hold down the Stop/Start button until the light on it turns on.

The Start/Stop button on your vehicle may be one of your favorite parts. Yet, understanding these features, including how to control the auto stop function, is important. We’ll talk you through the process of turning this feature off and why you may and may not want to do so.

What is the Auto Stop Feature?

Many of today’s modern vehicles do away with slipping the key into the ignition. Instead, they have a Start/Stop button that allows you to turn the car on when the key fob is close by.

These vehicles also have high-end features that allow it to control the amount of fuel used. Most people want to save money on gas while also reducing emissions. That’s where the automatic stop comes into play.

The 2019 Chevy Traverse features Start/Stop technology that aims to improve the fuel efficiency of the vehicle. When you stop at a light or for any other reason, the vehicle will “turn off” the engine to a point. This allows it to not use fuel while you are just sitting at a light.

When you take your foot off the brake, the engine automatically starts again. There’s no real loss of function during this time.

Chevy designed the vehicle to operate in this way without reducing performance or increasing wear and tear on the vehicle. It’s a common misconception that all of the stopping and starting can be bad for the engine, but that’s really not the case.

This technology is somewhat new. It was introduced by Chevrolet in the 2016 model year lineup for numerous vehicles. That includes the 2019 Traverse.

Before You Decide to Turn it Off

There are a few key reasons why you may want to leave this feature on and functioning for you. There are some benefits to the driver when the Start/Stop technology is being used.

Those include:

  • Improved fuel efficiency
  • Reduces carbon emissions
  • It automatically comes back on when there is a heating/cooling need or to maintain the vehicle’s performance

How Can You Turn off the Start/Stop Technology?

There are several opportunities for you to turn off this feature. Some vehicles, including the Traverse, have a Stop/Start deactivation switch. You just need to push it. That will turn this feature off. The switch has an “A” on it that is surrounded by an arrow. When you use that button, it will illuminate an LED indicator to let you know the feature is off.

Here’s the thing. The Chevy Traverse offered this on the 2018 vehicle. A small button located near the air conditioner was all it took to turn this feature off. In the 2019 vehicle, the manufacturer got rid of this feature. It doesn’t even tell you that you can turn it off. That’s because it wants you to use it.

Check out this video about how to bypass the Start/Stop Technology.

Here are the steps to doing so if you don’t want to watch the video. The same premise is followed on this vehicle as applies to the 2019 model if you do not have an off button.

  • First, you’ll want to know that there are some specific things that have to happen for the Start/Stop technology to actually engage and start to work. For example, the vehicle has to have a properly charged battery. If it is even a bit too low, the technology does not work because it does not want to drain the battery.
  • The vehicle also has to be up to temp before it will start working. If the air conditioning is running at a high level, the system may also not turn on.
  • To bypass and turn it off, follow these steps.
  • Start the car as you normally would.
  • Move the vehicle’s shifter into the “L” position. (Some vehicles this may be “M”).
  • Depress the button on the shifter until the display reads L9 (on the dash near) or to the highest setting. You’ll push the button based on how many gears the vehicle has.

This will bypass the Start/Stop feature. However, you have to do this every time with the vehicle when you start it.

You can then drive the vehicle as you normally would (moving into the proper gear, etc.).

Check the Fuel Economy for Your Vehicle

If you’re unsure if you should use the Start/Stop technology, consider a few things. First, some people do not like it. It can seem annoying and can interfere with the ease of driving. However, the fuel economy may make it worth that.

By EPA estimates, the 2020 Chevy Traverse gets 17 city and 25 highway, which is a combined 20 miles per gallon. This vehicle has a large engine and a lot of higher-end features. That takes away from the overall efficiency of it. Using the Start/Stop technology at least gets you to that 20 combined level.

Make the Decisions Right for Your Vehicle

Whether you are buying a new or pre-owned vehicle, you want to know how to get the most out of it. A part of that is using these key features. Check out the 2019 Chevy Traverse’s Vehicle History for more insight.
