There are 6 models of the 2017 Toyota 4Runner available including the SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited, and TRD Pro. Technology was last updated for the 2014 model, and the latest infotainment system and safety software was added in 2019.

What Drivetrain Is Offered?

The 4Runner is offered with either rear wheel drive or 4 wheel drive with a full low-range transfer case helping it excel at off-road performance.

What Are the Different Models of the 4Runner?

The base model is the SR5, which comes standard with 17-inch alloy wheels, skid plates underneath, a backup camera, cloth seating, leather steering wheel, and a 6.1-inch touchscreen navigation system with Entune apps.

A step up is the SR5 Premium, which adds heated power exterior mirrors, SofTex artificial leather seating, a HomeLink universal transceiver system, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

Next in the lineup is the TRD Off-Road adding unique 17-inch alloy wheels, cloth seating, color-keyed front and rear bumpers, multi-terrain select, hill start assist, crawl control, and a locking rear differential.

There are some more features on the TRD Off-Road Premium which adds the SofTex artificial leather, power driver’s and passenger seats, TRD red lettering on the badges, and heated power outside mirrors with turn signal indicators

The most luxurious model is the Limited, which has upgrades such as 20-inch alloy wheels, chrome inserts in the front and rear bumpers, smart key system, push button start, perforated leather seating with heating and cooling, dual-zone climate control, and an upgraded JBL stereo system.

For off-road enthusiasts, there’s the TRD Pro flagship model, which shares many features with the TRD Off-Road Premium, but adds 17-inch matte black wheels, high performance Bilstein rear shocks, TRD shocks, TRD Pro badges, and a unique front grille.

What Packages Are Available?

Some of the available packages include the preferred accessory package, four season floor mat package, convenience package, and all weather floor liner and cargo tray.

What Are the In-Car Entertainment Options?

The entertainment options are Satellite Radio, USB connectivity, 3.5mm AUX input, and an 8-speaker stereo system, and up to a 15-speaker JBL premium stereo system.

What Are the Interior Options?

Interior options that are available include the coin holder and ashtray cup, a cargo net, carpeted floor mats and cargo area, cargo cover, cargo divider, a tablet holder, and a sliding cargo deck.

Does 4Runner Have Good Gas Mileage?

Fuel efficiency is not a strong suit of the 4Runner, and it gets worse mileage than other midsize SUVs. The 4Runer gets up to 17 MPG city, 21 MPG on the highway, and 18 MPG combined.

What Are the 4Runner Engine Options?

There’s only one engine offered which is a powerful 4.0L V6 with 270 horsepower and 278 lb.-ft. of torque. Towing capacity is good for a midsize SUV, at up to 5,000 pounds. The performance is similar to its rivals, taking 7.6 seconds to go 0-60 MPH.

What Are the Safety Features?

Standard safety features include the Star Safety System, which offers vehicle stability control, traction control, anti-lock brakes, electronic brake force distribution, brake assistance, and smart stop technology. Other features include a full suite of airbags and an anti-theft security system.

How Big Is the 2017 4Runner?

The 2017 4Runner is similar in size to other midsize SUVs and has an optional third row available. Passenger room is good in the first two rows, but the third row is best suited to younger children.

Cargo space is a bit lower than rivals, with 9 cubic feet of room behind the third row, 45.8 behind the second row, and up to 88.3 with all seats folded flat.
