Truck engines are put through a lot, especially when heavy towing and hauling are involved.

This is one of many reasons why regular oil changes are so important if you drive a rugged pickup truck like the 2017 Ram 1500.

What kind of oil should you use in the 2017 Ram 1500 and how much of it is needed with each oil change?

While oil capacity can vary from 5.9 to 10.6 quarts (depending on the exact engine), every 2017 Ram 1500 engine runs best with full-synthetic SAE 5W-20 viscosity oil.

Read on to learn more about why oil type matters so much and what else you need to know before changing the oil on a 2017 Ram 1500.

Why Oil Type and Capacity Matter on the 2017 Ram 1500

Engine oils have different viscosities (thicknesses) and other properties that are specifically formulated for use in certain engines. When the engine on your 2017 Ram 1500 was developed, it was tested with a specific oil for maximum efficiency.

Using the wrong type of oil in your engine (such as one with a viscosity that is too thick) can cause sludge and other build-up to accumulate in your engine. As you can probably imagine, this can lead to premature wear and tear.

When fuel economy ratings for your truck were recorded, these were also calculated based on using the correct engine oil. Using the incorrect oil type can cause your fuel economy to plummet, which may result in more stops at the pump.

What Is the Oil Type and Capacity for the 2017 Ram 1500?

Pouring Oil In The Engine

There are a few different engines available on the 2017 Ram 1500. The standard is a 3.6L (220 ci) V6, although a more powerful 5.7L (345 ci) V8 and a turbo-diesel 3.0L (182 ci) V6 were also available on select trims when this truck was sold new.

Regardless of which gasoline engine is under the hood of your 2017 Ram 1500, a full synthetic SAE oil at 5W-20 viscosity is recommended. The only exception is that a 0W-40 viscosity is recommended on turbo-diesel models.

Oil capacity, however, can vary based on engine size. The V6 engine holds up to 5.9 quarts of oil. Meanwhile, the V8 engine can hold up to seven quarts, and the turbo-diesel has an oil capacity of up to 10.6 quarts.

If you have any doubts about whether you’re choosing the right oil type for your truck, it’s probably best to just schedule your oil change at a trusted Ram dealership. This way, you can have an experienced technician handle it for you.
